Mike Fantigrassi is the Senior Director of Product Development at the National Academy of Sports Medicine. (NASM) Mike is a results-driven leader with diverse expertise and an extensive network of contacts within the fitness industry. He has a proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. He has an extensive background in education and training program development/presentation. Mike is passionate about fitness, education, and helping others develop new skills that result in growth and success. He is fascinated by emerging health and wellness technology and fitness startups that are driving positive change. What is Mike’s history? (0:47) Mike went to college at Florida State University. Like many people at that age, Mike was unsure what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He was particularly drawn to fitness and, more specifically, nutrition.  Mike fumbled a bit with his choice of career. He wanted to go to medical school and then physical therapy school before settling for chiropractic school. Still, to fulfill the prerequisites for that, he had to get his undergraduate degree in food and nutrition.  That was the earliest version of the personal training undergraduate degree that someone would get to prepare to do personal training with a strong emphasis on nutrition. Mike had not wanted to go in the direction of dietetics and Clinical nutrition, but he did get to do was be a fitness trainer on Florida State University’s campus for a year and a half.  At the time, they had just opened up a large-scale recreational weight training facility that was state of the art. One of the best things that Mike went through was two weeks of training with the gym manager and everyone else who was involved.  It was Mike’s first exposure to learning how to be a good trainer. You can read about that stuff in textbooks but having the experience of being mentored and knowing you are receiving quality information is irreplaceable.  Once Mike graduated, he did a bit of coursework that he had needed to complete. After that, he moved to South Florida, where he had grown up and started working as a personal trainer for Gold’s Gym. He did that for a bit before transitioning into making sales for a gym that was going to open but never ended up opening, and from there, his journey just continued.  What steps have fitness professionals taken to educate themselves amidst everything that has happened this year? (7:11) The beauty of COVID and Mike believes that anybody in the fitness industry selling education content saw a bump in their sales because of the third recession mike has had the experience.  He started working for NASM in 2010 on the heels of the 2008 recession, which laster until 2010. During these times, you see people jumping careers; people went from personal training to real estate and vice versa.  However, during times of uncertainty, people tend to invest in themselves. Mike read an article that MBA programs are filling up; it is becoming difficult to get into different education types. Mike went through an MBA to help him with the business side of things they do at NASM.  2020 has been a record year for NASM. It has been the best year they have ever had, and Mike believes a lot of it came from COVID and then executed many things they had wanted to do for a long time. In particular, they wanted to utilize instructor teams that they have built up and maintained for a long time and push out a lot of content for their audience.  This year alone, they have done 125 different types of webinars and broadcast. They have multiple things they do on their Facebook page that gets plenty of engagement, which Mike believes audience members are hungry for.  What are the most significant differences Mike thinks fitness professionals need to understand doing virtual vs. in person? The difference is something that Mike and NASM are trying to address through their product. One of the things they were going to do before COVID was to get their instructor team together once a year.  This year in April, they were going to do media training with them. Everything from audio to on camera and how to read off of a teleprompter, unscripted stuff; because they had noticed the trend approaching. COVID accelerated that trend.   They looked at two platforms on which you can do virtual training. Mike did a lot of the research himself, and there was someone else coaching him too. They found that when virtual training is done right, it is surprisingly effective.  Mike was surprised at how much he enjoyed remote coaching. He has also seen people struggle to adopt online coaching because they treat it like a regular session, leaving the coach and trainees disjointed and detached from the session.  Mike says online coaching is a skill set that you need to develop. You cannot do the same things you can do in person, and you have to understand that. You have to know how to make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.  NASM NASM is the world leader in fitness certification, education, and performance. Originating from western Massachusetts, Mike found his way over to Holliston because of family and work after an incredible upbringing in Chicopee! When he graduated high school, he initially started out commuting to Western New England on a path towards a career in pharmacy because he saw the $$$. He eventually discovered that pharmacy was definitely not his calling. He took a turn and decided to pursue a career in computer science. After his freshman year, he transferred to UMass Amherst where he was able to enjoy the full college experience. Once Mike finished college, he continued with his college summer job at circuit city working as a car audio installation specialist. Eventually, MathWorks reached out to him about a job, and then he proudly illustrates how he has moved up within the company over the past 13 years.Later on we talk about how he met his wife, Kyla, through his cousin who was close friends with Kyla in high school and through college. Kyla expressed interest in Mike during their high school years, but unfortunately Mike was taken at the time and had to respectfully decline. Ultimately, the timing worked out where they were able to finally get together over a spring break during college. Everything happens for a reason!Currently Mike lives with his wife (and Firewall member) Kyla, his two daughters Lily and Lexi, 1 dog - Daisy the beagle, and 4 chickens, which he explains WHY he originally got the chickens. As you'll find out at the end of the interview, in the maybe not so distant future, Mike's number of pets could exponentially increase - and trust me, you'll never guess as to why... (Hint: buzz buzz)As a kid, Mike always played soccer. However as an adult, he fell in love with the sport of hockey! Mike parallels his hockey league with CrossFit meaning people of all different skill levels are playing with each other side by side with endless amounts of support.Be sure to listen the whole way through as Mike absolutely crushes our questions for him at the end!Thank you so much for coming on the show Mike! We greatly appreciated your transparency, honesty, and enthusiasm. Although there was a ton of his life story we didn't even graze over, we hope many were able to get a good idea of Mike's past, present and future.

CEO Warrior Podcast with Mike Agugliaro

In this episode of the CEO Warrior podcast the roles are reversed and Jay Abraham is interviewing Mike Agugliaro. Jay and Mike discuss the origins of Gold Medal Service and CEO Warrior and talk about the biggest mindset change that Mike made over the course of his business that allowed him to go from two guys and a truck to generating $30+ million a year in revenue before selling his company.   Key Lessons Learned: CEO Warrior CEO Warrior was given birth by Mike Agugliaro and Mike Disney in an effort to completely transform the way the service industry operates. They turn service contractors into strategic and thoughtful entrepreneurs. Mike takes in high growth oriented contractors and uses his teaching and training to level up their business and doubling their results and success. CEO Warrior is an organization that gets people taking positive, powerful, and decisive action. When Mike started out the only training he really had was what he learned at a vocational school. He had been on his own since the age of 15 and there’s one thing everyone who has had a similar experience knows, you learn how to survive. Mike convinced his partner to venture out and start their own service business despite the fact that they had good jobs at the time. Little did they realize they that the first ten years would be extremely difficult. They were young, knew they could work hard, and were willing to trade dollars for hours but that started to change when they got a bit older and started having kids. Everything changed when Mike’s partner declared that he was finished, that he wanted to quit and couldn’t take it anymore. This put Mike on the path to looking for people who had already figured it out. Imagine what you can do if you knew what to do. That was the lesson that Mike and his partner learned and that thought transformed everything. You can try to wing it or you can find out what you need to know in order to succeed and really increase your chances. Mike realized that marketing was one of the keys. Most small business owners didn’t understand what marketing means and what it can do. Change is uncomfortable but if you don’t try to do something different you’re just going to stay the same. The most important asset to people is their time. Times have changed and people now want convenience and simplicity. Becoming a source of one and adding additional trades allows you to serve your customers faster and more efficiently. It also lead to scalable and sustainable growth for the company. Mindset Change The biggest shift in thinking that Mike had was going from working in the business to working on the business. Going from the work itself to figuring out how to find new customers, creating assets in the brand, and creating a sustaining and multiplying business. It’s hard to grow a million dollar business with a hundred thousand dollar mind. Mindset change begins with your personal identity and then radiates out to your brand and your people. After changing the brand, Mike realized that they needed to get around people that not only knew the business but would be around to make sure they don’t make critical mistakes. When you find the best in the world you realize that one conversation with them can move you forward faster than a year with someone who hasn’t gone that far. You have to want hurtful truths instead of comforting lies. You always have a choice, but if you trust someone who has the expertise and you get out of your own way, things will change very quickly. Connecting the right people with the right leverage can lead to a decade’s worth of progress in six months. When you remove the weak links in your business the whole chain becomes much stronger. In order to appreciate expertise you have to appreciate as an asset that can pay greater dividends than any piece of machinery or technique you can use. Why would you want your business to be just a paycheck if it could be a wealth creation engine? Struggling people are usually surrounded by other struggling people. There are a lot of people that settle and begin to resent their life. Being around and mentored by people that think different is very important. Once Mike started to believe in himself, he started to reevaluate his language and thought patterns. Once Mike articulated and believed the vision he had for the business, it became a question of not whether they will succeed, it was how big do they want to get? There are no problems, only opportunities. One of the greatest enlightenments that anyone can have is the moment they know that the reason they are on the planet. That’s a mindset change that transforms the way you think about the world and your place in it. If you can get mind growth and then turn that new growth into your mindset change, the effects on your life can be profound. There are very few reasons why someone can’t win this game unless they choose not to. Nobody retires from what they love. You grow or die, and that’s true in business and life. It’s impossible to stay neutral and not making a decision isn’t possible. Inaction is a decision in itself. You have control of 98% of what happens to you, are you going to be a victim or a victor? If you knew you were going to live to 100, what would you do differently? Be brave enough to step and move into your greater self. Tactics One of the smaller changes with disproportionate impact on Mike’s business was changing the way they answered the phone. Instead of just a quick transaction they began to focus on building a rapport with them and understanding what they really want. If you don’t have a framework of delivery everything about your business will appear to be episodic and inconsistent. Mike found out that the more they trained and coached, the more empowered and confident the team began to feel. If you verbalize your commitment to train your team and follow up, your team will reciprocate and commit back. Every process and element of your business should reinforce the same message. Mike Bennett has been in the industry since 1985. He is an ASE Master Tech who has worked for GM as Technician, Shop Foreman, Service manager and Service Director for 2 locations. Mike bought his current shop, Mike’s Kars, in Gettysburg, PA in 1999. It is a a four bay shop with 3 technicians. In 2011, he became a full time coach with Automotive Training Institute helping shop owner’s to re-engineer and grow their businesses. We sat down in Santa Barbara, CA at the AutoVitals Digital Conference for our interview. Talking points: Mike co-owns the shop with his wife Shelle who is also the General Manager. He had his light bulb moment when he realized he needed more training on business and leadership. He re-engineered himself so he could he teach his people. He became an ATI client and fully immersed in it. It started with learning leadership so he can teach the why and influence the people around him. He started to gain control in his business and he found some additional freedom (time). Best employees are empowered and understand their role. Great leaders show their people how to succeed. Once Mike worked himself out of the business, his team prefers he doesn’t come around. Two areas of struggle for owners today. The business side of the business. Be a leader of people It is a state of mind, an awareness, to relate with people, understand yourself, to influence people. There is some level of desperation that brings a shop owner to a coaching program. An important part of building a great business is to have a quality culture. It can be a result of great leadership. You are being shopped by potential employees rather than you are shopping for them. They are researching you, your website, your reviews, etc. The most powerful statement of the health of your business is when they come to you to find out if you have openings. Books to read. E-Myth and the E-Myth revisited by Michael Gerber. Predictable Success by Les McKeown. The Five Temptations of a CEO by Patrick Lencioni. Accountability factor has to do with the owner’s beliefs in systems/processes. Accountability is higher when there is the biggest desperation. Your clay is the ripest for molding. Work life balance and a successful business. If you don’t have a good balance at home, you won’t have one at work. As shop owners we do not bring the same level of curiosity we had as techs to the business side of the business. We will survive the tech advancements as we have every decade. Heavy penetration of hybrids will not peak until 2040. A smart business and entrepreneur will prepare themselves. There is a common theme among our community that follows the mind-set that “there are no excuses”. I’m happy to report that we, once again, have another data point that proves this mindset is not unrealistic or impossible to put into action in real life. Our guest, Mike, was on a very… very… nice path, but then some “life evens” happened that set him back a bit. Speaking for myself, I was inspired by Mike’s story and how he never threw a pity party for himself, but adapted the attitude of “get-er-done” and started chipping away. There is little question in my mind on whether or not you’ll find any motivation in this interview… I’m confident you will! Notes: Mike’s introduction to the market was in highschool when he would follow the quotes in the newspaper. During college, Mike always had a huge interest in historical figures especially in the realm of finance. While he maintained an interest in the market, he actually passed up a job to work for a very large broker. Knowing one of the higher ups there, he saw how awful he was to his employees and decided that wasn’t an environment he wanted to be subjected to. Once Mike had some capital to put into the market, he went the way of value investing. These were all very long, multi month-year holds. He did quite well investing this way and admits he may have stumbled into some fool’s gold but an unfortunate divorce wiped away his worth and actually left him in quite a bit of debt. After working hard for many years, Mike has cleared all the debt and problems in his life and has now been working toward rebuilding his trading account. He has been focusing on options so he can trade larger names with much less capital outlay (utilizing technical analysis). He will continue to focus on names and industries that he knows well blending in his older investment style criteria. Quotes: “If Vanderbilt had enemies he wanted to do away with, he would manipulate his stocks to drive his competition bankrupt.” “I got interested in value investing. I’m the kind of person that does a ton of research on anything I’m interested in.” “I only invested in businesses that I understand. I really didn’t understand technology so I didn’t own any of them.” “Investing is like watching paint dry. I thought trading would be a good way to accumulate funds for investing.” “I’ll give you two words to sum up successful trading. Impulse control.”
