Send us a textTwo weeks in a row? We did it gang. We are so back! In Ep 2 of this season we jump back into some of our favorite running themes of the show. Johnny's highs and lows, supplements and a few points to consider as we keep our momentum rolling. We even throw out a few gripes and groans from our gym based pet peeves. Enjoy!
Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why! Most trainers don't fail for lack of passion; they fail because no one showed them how to turn knowledge into coached reps and coached reps into confident sales. We walk straight through the credential maze—C-tier certs like NASM/ACE/ISSA, nonprofit mainstays NSCA/ACSM, the CSCS and kinesiology degrees, and why applied internships and mentorships sit at the top when it comes to getting hired and keeping clients safe.We share the hard numbers managers see on the floor, the real reasons accreditation doesn't equal readiness, and the practical skills that move the needle: assessments that drive programming, modifications for common injuries, communication that calms nerves, and simple, ethical closing frameworks that make pricing feel natural. You'll hear how case-based learning (think: “Pickleball Pete” with lateral elbow pain) builds pattern recognition fast, why unsupervised “experience” can cement bad habits, and how structured supervision turns you into the coach clients trust with complex goals and limitations. If you're sitting on a C-tier cert right now, we outline an honest path: pass quickly, get floor time, stack hands-on seminars, and document real outcomes. If you're targeting elite clubs like Equinox or Lifetime, we show exactly what hiring managers look for—competence, composure, and a clear system for assessment and progression. Along the way, we unpack who actually owns the big cert brands, how marketing shapes perception, and why the best question isn't “Is it accredited?” but “Will this help me coach a real human on Monday?”Ready to build a career, not just collect acronyms? Hit play, take notes, and then take action. Are you secretly a master at avoiding conflict and saying “yes” when you really want to scream “no?” In this eye-opening episode of “Strong Mind, Strong Body”, host Angie Miller gets real about the hidden health crisis behind conflict avoidance and people pleasing—and how these self-sacrificing habits may be costing you more than you realize. Drawing from her own childhood as the youngest in a busy single-parent household, Angie shares touching personal stories and the surprising ways her people-pleasing tendencies shaped her life. On this insightful episode of the “NASM-CPT Podcast,” host, and NASM Master Instructor, Rick Richey, tackles a nuanced listener question from Ellie about the financial realities of going independent as a personal trainer. Rick dives into the classic advice that many entrepreneurs should expect to reinvest their profits for the first three to five years and puts this into perspective for trainers considering going out on their own versus opening a brick-and-mortar facility. He breaks down what it actually costs to work independently, and why it usually doesn't take years to “pay yourself back”—unlike running a physical gym, which often requires a significant upfront investment and years of profit reinvestment. Rick also sheds light on important yet often confusing tax responsibilities for self-employed trainers, gives practical advice on setting aside money for business expenses and retirement, and shares stories from his own experience growing multiple gyms in New York City. With relatable anecdotes—like his wife asking, “When do we get to keep the money?”—and actionable tips (hint: get a business credit card just for work expenses), Rick makes the numbers approachable. He also details the pros and cons, both financial and lifestyle-wise, of working for yourself versus for someone else. If you're considering taking the leap into independent training or even opening your own facility, this episode is packed with real-world financial advice, hard truths, and encouragement for trainers at every stage of entrepreneurship. Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Ever wondered why so many personal trainers struggle despite having "gold standard" certifications? This eye-opening exploration pulls back the curtain on the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) - the fitness industry's equivalent of McDonald's.Founded in 1987 by Dr. Robert Goldman and developed by respected professionals like Dr. Michael Clark, NASM once represented cutting-edge fitness education. Today, after multiple corporate acquisitions (Ascend Learning in 2009, then Blackstone in 2017), it's become a marketing powerhouse with 1.5 million certified trainers worldwide. But quantity doesn't always equal quality. We dive deep into NASM's transformation from respected education provider to corporate giant, examining both its strengths (global recognition, gym employment opportunities) and critical limitations. The certification offers minimal business training, relies on outdated biomechanical concepts like upper cross syndrome (largely debunked by physical therapists), and features questionable programming recommendations. Most troublingly, newly certified trainers face a harsh reality: $9-12 per half-hour pay at big box gyms while clients are charged $50+, demanding split shifts, and pressure to sell supplements they may not believe in. It's no wonder 90% of trainers quit within their first year.True success in fitness requires more than passing a multiple-choice test. Elite trainers need mentorship, hands-on experience, business acumen, and professional networks – elements textbook certifications rarely provide. Whether you're considering becoming a trainer or looking to level up your career, understanding the limitations of standard certifications is crucial to avoiding the common pitfalls of the fitness industry.Ready to move beyond basic certifications? In this heartfelt episode of "Strong Mind, Strong Body," host Angie Miller sits down with featured guest, Cynthia Flores—creative director at NASM and design leader at Future London Academy—to explore the powerful concept of “growing without a map.” If you've ever felt the pressure to meticulously plan your life or relied on vision boards to shape your future, this conversation will encourage you to rethink what it means to be present, let go, and embrace uncertainty. Angie and Cynthia dive into why letting go of rigid plans can open new doors and foster genuine creativity, joy, and connection. Cynthia shares vulnerable moments from her personal life, including profound challenges as a mother navigating her son's mental health journey. Together, they examine how true joy is often found not in grand achievements, but in the simplest daily acts—like having a glass of water or taking a walk—the very moments we tend to overlook when fixated on future outcomes. They also tackle the impact of stress and fight-or-flight mode on creativity, with practical advice for leaders, fitness professionals, and anyone feeling stuck or overwhelmed. By blending professional insights and real-life stories, Cynthia and Angie reveal how curiosity, granting yourself permission to slow down, and finding small moments of joy can transform the way we experience both work and life. Whether you're navigating uncertainty or just seeking inspiration to release the “shoulds” in your life, this discussion is a must-listen. On this “NASM-CPT Podcast,” host, and NASM Master Instructor, Rick Richey, takes on a challenge every personal trainer faces - clients who stop showing up—and never come back. Inspired by a listener question, Rick dives deep into the dynamics of client relationships and what trainers can do when someone vanishes after a family vacation, minor surgery, or a life event. Dr. Richey shares ten critical questions and comments trainers should be asking themselves, ranging from “Am I providing enough value?” to “Am I taking my clients for granted?” He explores the importance of focusing on clients' personal goals, tracking their progress, and not allowing sessions to devolve into aimless chit-chat. Rick also covers the power of anonymous client surveys, encouraging trainers to seek candid feedback to continually improve their services—even if it's about something as simple as morning breath! Highlighting that not all client departures are about the trainer, Rick sensitively notes that personal, environmental, or social factors—such as discomfort in gym culture or life stresses—can play a major part. He emphasizes the value of a heartfelt follow-up, staying connected with clients through cards, messages, and occasional check-ins, ensuring the door remains open for their return. Whether you're a seasoned coach or new to the industry, this episode is packed with actionable advice for nurturing client relationships and staying present for clients, no matter what path they're on. From breaking free of numbing coping mechanisms to calming an overactive nervous system, Andrea shares how intentional breathing can release buried emotions, rewire your stress response, and open the door to creativity and clarity. You'll learn how to recognize when you're stuck in “stress mode,” reconnect to your authentic self, and use breath as a daily anchor for resilience. This isn't just another wellness trend. It's a practical, soul-deep approach you can use anywhere—whether you need to ground before a big meeting, shift out of overwhelm, or finally exhale years of holding it all together.

This episode isn't just a cautionary tale but a roadmap for aspiring gym owners. Dr. Richey offers invaluable advice on building a robust business plan, budgeting for capital and operational expenses, and mentally preparing for the inevitabilities that can—and will—go wrong. In this eye-opening episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Allyson Nicole—NASM-certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and probation officer—to uncover the powerful connection between mindset and sustainable health. Allyson shares her personal journey through disordered eating, overtraining, and self-sabotage, and how a single mindset shift helped her break the cycle and rebuild her relationship with food. Learn how to challenge limiting beliefs, escape the trap of all-or-nothing thinking, and start making empowered health choices from a place of self-love, not shame. Whether you're stuck in the binge-restrict loop or tired of starting over every Monday, this episode gives you the mental tools to finally make lasting change. Tune in to gain practical strategies rooted in behavior change theory, psychology, and real-world coaching. About the Guest:Allyson Nicole is a NASM-certified personal trainer, certified nutrition coach, and full-time probation officer. As founder of Allyson Nicole Nutrition, she integrates real-world coaching with behavior change psychology to help individuals break out of restrictive cycles and live a more empowered, balanced life. Key Takeaways : Mindset is the foundation of health—not just a starting point. Allyson explains how most people sabotage their progress due to the all-or-nothing thinking trap. Shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset opens the door to sustainable, non-restrictive health practices that actually work. Allyson shares her journey of overcoming disordered eating by dropping food rules, refusing to weigh herself, and embracing food neutrality—highlighting that dopamine-driven cravings reduce when food loses its “forbidden” label. Her work as a probation officer gives her a unique lens on behavior change. She uses CBT-based tools like the “Thinking Report” to help clients examine their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs objectively. Replacing negative self-talk with empowering scripts—like “I don't do that anymore” or “I'll start now, not tomorrow”—can radically change behavior patterns. Overtraining and under-eating don't lead to long-term success. Instead, coaching should be about helping people find routines that truly fit their lives.
