All four share their mystical experiences encountering God, and finding ways to get back to the “flow state,” the awakened creative state where one cohabits with the divine. The wisdom and food for thought is plentiful throughout this conversation. The mystic paintings of Alex Grey articulate realms of psychedelic visionary consciousness, revealing interwoven energies of body and soul, love and spirit, illuminating the anatomical core of each being. Alex’s visual meditations on the nature of life and consciousness, the subject of his art, have reached millions through his five books including three monographs, the exhibition and extensive reproduction of his artwork, speaking appearances including a popular TED talk, stage sets for major rock bands, video animation, and Grammy award winning album art. Allyson Grey is a painter, social sculptor, Alex’s creative and life partner since meeting in art school in 1975. Chaos, Order and Secret Writing comprise the essentialized world view portrayed in Allyson’s paintings. Chaos represents the material world, Order, the interconnected realm of energy and light and Secret Writing articulates the mystic realm of creative expression. MFA, Tufts University. Allyson has long been an art educator, event organizer and a muse to artists worldwide. Together, the Grey’s co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City. On the forefront of a movement in which painters join musicians on stage, the Grey’s have painted together live before tens of thousands of dancing young people at New York Broadway theaters, at sold-out festivals and arenas in dozens of international cities across five continents. As long-time advocates of “cognitive liberty,” a growing international “sacramental culture” has embraced the Grey’s as important mapmakers and spokespersons for the visionary realm. The Grey’s, with the CoSM team, are currently building Entheon, a Visionary Art sanctuary at CoSM. cosm.orgLinks:Alex Grey on InstagramAlex Grey on FacebookAllyson Grey on InstagramAllyson Grey on FacebookThis podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Having joined her first Civil Rights picket line at 14 years old, Denise found herself as a young activist in the 1960’s San Francisco in the heart of the same world where the Grateful Dead came to be. Denise shares with Mike and Oteil the incredible tale of meeting Ken Kesey, “getting on the bus,” and getting her Prankster nickname “Mary Microgram.” She also explains what led to her going to music school at 33, her time teaching yoga to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and other celebrities, and opening a private school in Hawaii now in its 44th year of operation. Her commitment to social justice and exploratory approach to life led her to adventures in counterculture: from being arrested at UC Berkeley's Sproul Hall protests during the Free Speech Movement, to "getting on the bus” (as "Mary Microgram") with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and the Grateful Dead; to forming the legendary Ace of Cups—an all-girl band that opened for Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and Janis Joplin; to being one of the seven founding mothers of Island School on Kauai; to studying with Robert Nadeau Shihan, Yogi Bhajan, Bikram Choudhury, Pattabhi Jois, and Paul Grilley and to teaching yoga to Madonna, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Quincy Jones, and Jane Fonda. Bob chimes in with his own mycelial anecdotes and his predictions about how the world will react to the increasing research around psychoactive mushrooms. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll also hear how Paul became the inspiration for Lieutenant Paul Stamets on Star Trek, an astro-mycologist. Paul Stamets, speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur, is considered an intellectual and industry leader in fungi: habitat, medicinal use, and production. He lectures extensively to deepen the understanding and respect for the organisms that literally exist under every footstep taken on this path of life. His presentations cover a range of mushroom species and research showing how mushrooms can help the health of people and planet. His central premise is that habitats have immune systems, just like people, and mushrooms are cellular bridges between the two. Our close evolutionary relationship to fungi can be the basis for novel pairings in the microbiome that lead to greater sustainability and immune enhancement.Resources for more information:https://paulstamets.com/https://fungi.com/http://mushroomreferences.com/You can find Paul on social media: @PaulstametsThis podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. “If you understand the process of making records, the style of music doesn't matter. What matters is that whoever the artist is, that they're being for real, that they're opening up and letting out this part of their inner life that defies explanation, where words fail to convey the true depth of our inner emotional lives. We use art as a metaphor to communicate it. - Don WasOn today's episode of Comes a Time, Mike & Oteil welcome bass player and record producer Don Was, co-founder of the funk-rock band Was (not Was) and later a producer on countless albums with major artists including the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Don shares his philosophy when it comes to producing a record and the occasional star-struck moments that still appear when he thinks on his career. The three also discuss Phil Lesh’s incredibly unique bass style and Oteil’s approach to filling that role in Dead & Company, along with the connection to the music that comes through playing Grateful Dead songs. Don Ferguson first became known to music audiences as a founding member of Was (Not Was), which he formed with childhood friend David Weiss in his hometown of suburban Detroit under the stage names Don Was and David Was. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Was (Not Was) released four studio albums that showcased their unique blend of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and dance music combined with satirical and unusual lyrics. Their 1988 album, What Up, Dog?, spawned the US and UK hit singles "Spy in the House of Love" and "Walk the Dinosaur." As an in-demand, highly acclaimed, and commercially successful producer since the late 1980s, Was has been honored with multiple Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award for his production work, which includes collaborations with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Brian Wilson, Ziggy Marley, and countless others. In 2012, he became the president of preeminent jazz label Blue Note Records. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Success, failure, happy, sad, love, hate, hot, cold, pleasure, pain. [...] Everyone, like an ocean, has turbulence on the surface. But at the depths of the ocean, it's pretty darn steady and silent. Neal shares the details of his studio setup, the plethora of projects he’s been working on this year, including his own YouTube channel. He also recalls an emotional moment backstage in 2000 with Oteil, a mentor to him, which propels the group to discuss the driving desire to share their knowledge as musicians. Alan & Neal also tell the strange story of having the power shut off in the middle of their Berkfest performance, a blasphemy Oteil dubs “Soulive Interruptus,” and the four discuss festivals and performances aplenty throughout the years. Brothers Alan and Neal Evans, on drums and Hammond B-3 organ, respectively, form two-thirds of the band Soulive. Rounding out the group is Eric Krasno on guitar. A funky instrumental trio, Soulive are all about danceable, organ-driven groove jazz. Their sound is a result of fusing the soul-jazz of the past with a modern hip-hop feel. The band was formed in Buffalo, New York, in the late '90s when all three members were under age 25. However, each already had a substantial background in the jam band scene. Alan and Neal are former members of Moon Boot Lover, and Alan also played with the Greyboy Allstars. Soulive toured with and opened for a number of notables (including John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks, and Robben Ford) before headlining their own shows and releasing their introductory EP, Get Down, in 1999.More recently, Alan Evans runs his own studio Iron Wax in Western Massachusetts, while touring with Matador! Soul Sounds, a band that he formed with guitarist Eddie Roberts from The New Mastersounds. Neal Evans has worked on film and television scores, as well as being an in-demand keyboardist both in the studio and on the road for a number of high profile artists. “I just love reading about adventure and about history, biography, about why people succeed in life. And one of the overriding themes on the path to success is that as we're all chasing this dream, that when we come to the hurdles, when it seems like it's not going to happen, when the adversity is just overwhelming and just crushing us, somebody, some complete stranger will just come into your life, then all of a sudden give you that little boost, give you the edge, hand you ten dollars, open his hand, come with me. And that and that is what the Grateful Dead is all about.” - Bill WaltonIn this episode of Comes a Time, Mike & Oteil are joined by the legendary former basketball player, sportscaster and beloved Deadhead, Bill Walton. Like the force of energy that he is, Bill takes the lead in the conversation, sharing stories about his mentors through his athletic career, the creative and exploratory environment of his childhood home, and finding purpose and possibilities through the Grateful Dead music and culture. Bill talks about his first Dead show in 1967 at 15 years old, when he says “I don’t remember how we got in, because we didn’t have any money, but somehow we got up to the front row, and I never left.” Bill unexpectedly (or perhaps, exactly as expected) turns the tables and interviews Oteil, at which point we go deep on Oteil’s singing career, transitioning between bands, camaraderie in Dead & Co, and the possibility of bringing his afro back. The three also discuss Oteil’s, Steve Martin’s and Jerry Garcia’s banjo playing. On a more serious note, but equally inspiring, we hear about Bill’s long and arduous journey of learning how to speak, starting at age twenty-eight, after suffering a lifelong speech impediment, for which he now coaches young people with the same issues. Bill Walton was born in downtown San Diego. The family quickly moved to La Mesa, The Jewel of The Hills, where his Mom, Gloria, still lives, in the same house now, for 67 years. He exploded on the international basketball scene while attending Helix High School. Bill went to UCLA as a scholarship player for John Wooden, winning three successive NCAA Player of the Year awards and helping UCLA to consecutive undefeated NCAA championships (1972, 1973), and a record 88-game winning streak. Bill is a member of the NCAA All Time Basketball Team. Bill was selected as the #1 overall pick in the 1974 NBA Draft. Walton and the Portland Trail Blazers won the NBA Championship in 1977, earning the NBA Finals MVP award that season. He was the NBA MVP the next season. Bill won another NBA title, playing with the Boston Celtics in 1986. He was named the NBA 6th Man of the Year that season. Bill is a member of the NBA All Time Team. Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Bill is also in numerous other Halls of Fame, including the HOF of USA High Schools, The NCAA, the NCAA Academic All America, for UCLA, Pac-12, Oregon, San Diego, California, New England, the Boys & Girls Club, Guinness, and the Grateful Dead. When Bill could no longer play basketball, he started a most unlikely career as a multimedia broadcaster, a career that has now spanned 30 years. Tony shares the unlikely story of how he was inspired to pick up the banjo as a politically active 12 year old in Syracuse. Tony also talks about hopping in a VW van to attend the first 3-day Bluegrass festival in 1965, racial tensions in the South mixing with hippie culture, and going backstage at a Bob Dylan show at 13.Tony Trischka was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1949, and raised in a home filled with music. Trischka fell in love with the banjo by way of the Kingston Trio’s 1963 recording of “M.T.A.,” and was able to experience the New York-centered folk revival by trekking to the Newport Folk Festival in the early to mid-’60s. His work with his pal Steve Martin has helped the banjo gain a wider audience and deeper understanding. Trischka’s Grammy-nominated album Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular, released in 2007, and Great Big World, from 2014, feature Martin within a mix of veterans and up-and-coming luminaries. He produced Martin’s Grammy-nominated Rounder album from 2011, Rare Bird Alert, which touts performances by the Steep Canyon Rangers, Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks. Liz discusses the challenges that kids face across the country, and why we need to think deeply about what they’re going through before we make any judgments. From education to activism, Liz Dozier has spent her career working tirelessly to disrupt the culture of inequity that is often pervasive in urban neighborhoods. In 2016, Dozier launched Chicago Beyond, an impact investor that backs the fight for youth equity by fueling organizations, individuals, and learning. Since its inception, Chicago Beyond has invested more than $30 million in local nonprofit organizations and community leaders that fight for all youth to achieve their fullest human potential. Beyond funding, the team works hand-in-hand with their investment partners to provide the strategic support and thought partnership they need to achieve their goals and impact more young people. Because there is no single barrier to equity, Chicago Beyond invests in everything from education, to youth safety, to health and wellness, and beyond. Dozier’s ambition is born from her experiences as an educator in Chicago Public Schools. During her tenure as principal at Fenger High School, which at the time was known as one of the most violent and underperforming schools in Chicago, Fenger experienced a decrease in its dropout rate from 19% to 2%, a 40% increase in Freshman On-Track to graduate, and double-digit increases in attendance and the school’s state graduation rate. Keenly aware of how traumatic events outside of the classroom were affecting her students, Dozier’s method to turn Fenger around also included the adoption of restorative justice and mental health and wellness strategies. Dozier's work has been featured in various outlets such as the New York Times Best Seller How Children Succeed by Paul Tough, CNN’s docu-series Chicagoland, and forums such as Aspen Ideas Festival, the Kennedy Center Forum on Mental Health, The Obama Foundation Summit, and SXSW.
