In 1974 he collaborated with Ram Dass on the box set Love Serve Remember. In 1990 he launched Triloka Records and Karuna Music in Los Angeles, California. Triloka established itself as a critical leader in the development of world music and for 17 years was home to such artists as Krishna Das, Hugh Masekela, Walela, Jai Uttal and transformational media projects that featured Ram Dass, Deepak Chopra, and Les Nubians. He is currently the Executive Director of the Love Serve Remember Foundation and has been an associate producer for online and television events for Ram Dass, Oprah Winfrey, and Eckhart Tolle. Oteil and Mike are back to kick off 2022 with a very special guest, the one and only Steve Parish! In this conversation you'll hear one of the wisest, longest-running members of the Grateful Dead family talk about illusions of being on the road, why being a musician is one of the most difficult professions, and Jerry Garcia's pre-show routine. You'll also hear the guys discuss the real-world application of “Keep Your Day Job,” Steve's uncle Mitchell Parish who wrote standards with legends such as Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael, and the resurgence of Steve's backstage band, the Ass Bites From Hell (named by Bob Weir). Steve has an incredibly unique perspective of the band due to his role between the stage and the audience, and in this conversation you'll hear all about his wild ride with the Grateful Dead. Steve Parish has been a primary member of the Grateful Dead family for over 50 years. He first joined the band as a roadie in 1969, but it wasn't long before he became Jerry Garcia's trusted gear handler and began to manage the Jerry Garcia Band. Over the years, Parish and Garcia forged an unbreakable bond. Steve was Jerry's best man at his wedding, and was at his bedside when Garcia fell into a coma in 1986. Parish was the last friend to see Jerry before his untimely death in 1995, but has continued to maintain his relationships with the rest of the Grateful Dead family. In 2017 Steve started Grizzly Peak, a California-based cannabis company that grows pesticide-free, premium cannabis flower. Since then he has embarked on a relentless journey to inspire hope, change, and perseverance for those who've been affected by gun violence, and for the country at large. Fred and his wife Jennifer now spend time challenging our elected officials to create impactful change. They began a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to Jaime's life called “Orange Ribbons for Jaime,” and Fred created a 501(c)(4) called “Orange Ribbons For Gun Safety.” He's also written a book called Find the Helpers, which is about how compassion from others has helped Fred navigate the adversity of losing his daughter and his brother within a four-month period- it's a story of recovery, purpose, and hope. This week, Comes a Time welcomes Denise Kaufman, musician, yogi, activist, founding member of the all-girl SF band Ace of Cups, Merry Prankster, and so much more.
