Oteil and Mike are back to kick off 2022 with a very special guest, the one and only Steve Parish! In this conversation you'll hear one of the wisest, longest-running members of the Grateful Dead family talk about illusions of being on the road, why being a musician is one of the most difficult professions, and Jerry Garcia's pre-show routine. You'll also hear the guys discuss the real-world application of “Keep Your Day Job,” Steve's uncle Mitchell Parish who wrote standards with legends such as Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael, and the resurgence of Steve's backstage band, the Ass Bites From Hell (named by Bob Weir). Steve has an incredibly unique perspective of the band due to his role between the stage and the audience, and in this conversation you'll hear all about his wild ride with the Grateful Dead. Steve Parish has been a primary member of the Grateful Dead family for over 50 years. He first joined the band as a roadie in 1969, but it wasn't long before he became Jerry Garcia's trusted gear handler and began to manage the Jerry Garcia Band. Over the years, Parish and Garcia forged an unbreakable bond. Steve was Jerry's best man at his wedding, and was at his bedside when Garcia fell into a coma in 1986. Parish was the last friend to see Jerry before his untimely death in 1995, but has continued to maintain his relationships with the rest of the Grateful Dead family. In 2017 Steve started Grizzly Peak, a California-based cannabis company that grows pesticide-free, premium cannabis flower. He has been a fundamental component to the engine of the Grateful Dead since the earliest days of the band, and you'll hear all about it in this episode.Check out Steve's website: https://www.bigsteveparish.com/-----------*DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. This week on Comes a Time, the one and only George Porter Jr. joins Oteil and Mike for an enriching conversation about his riveting life in music. You'll hear about why George is proud of the record that he made over quarantine and how the process of making it was different than what he's used to, George's indoctrination into the world of the Grateful Dead and why his version of “Eyes of the World” is Oteil's favorite, as well as what it was like to grow up as a musician in New Orleans. You'll also hear Oteil and George dive deep into the low end as they discuss pocket vs. chops for bassists, the story of how George got sober and never looked back, and why we have a donut shop and George's father to thank for his masterfully funky bass playing. George Porter Jr. founded The Meters in 1965 alongside Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters carved their own place in history with syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans' deep African musical roots. They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter's heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George's reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Porter will forever be New Orleans music royalty, and he calls the city home to this day.Check out George Porter Jr. and Runnin' Pardners new album, Crying For Hope, here.-----------*DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. This week on Comes a Time, the show celebrates its 50th episode with a can't-miss conversation, as Bill Kreutzmann and John Mayer join Oteil and Mike for an action-packed discussion! The four deep on their musical philosophies, Billy's recent shows in Hawaii with Carlos Santana and Billy Strings, and Mayer jokes amongst Deadheads. You'll also hear Oteil ask Billy about his “social sliver” microdosing strategy, Mayer talk about the new album that he made over quarantine and how it's going to “piss off some Deadheads,” and some fantastic insights on Jerry Garcia's guitar playing from the people who know it best.Bill Kreutzmann was the drummer of the Grateful Dead for their entire 30-year career, and has been keeping the spirit of the group's music alive with Dead & Company and side projects like Billy & the Kids ever since his days with the Dead. Hardly in need of an introduction, Kreutzmann was the rhythmic nucleus to the Grateful Dead's cohesive and unified style of jamming, driving the heartbeat of the band through their improvisational explorations. His style of drumming is heavily influenced by jazz and funk music, but his appreciation for all styles can be heard in his steering of the Grateful Dead's spontaneity.John Mayer, who also needs no introduction, is the lead guitarist for Dead & Company. Aside from his playing in Dead & Company Mayer has had a massively successful career as a pop artist, amassing 7 Grammy awards, 4 platinum albums, and over 17 million album sales worldwide. His talents have been praised by the legendary musicians he's collaborated with, an impressive list that includes names like Eric Clapton, Jay-Z, and B.B. King. Mayer defies the boundaries set by genres, which allowed him to adapt his playing style and musical outlook upon joining Dead & Company, as he discusses in the episode. -----------This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. “The integral experience is where people come up with mystical experiences, spiritual experiences. Not everybody gets that far, but those that do often feel a sense of oneness … or some of them feel that they’re in the presence of God or of the Spirit. And again, this can be very very powerful and in previous days, this would be looked upon as a psychotic hallucination.” -- Dr. Stanley KrippnerThis week on Comes A Time, Oteil and Mike are joined by accomplished psychologist Dr. Stanley Krippner, who has been a key figure in studying altered states of consciousness over the last 50 years. In this conversation you’ll hear Dr. Krippner detail his understanding of the psychedelic experience and how it relates to modern medical assessments of the human mind, as well as stories of mid-concert experiments with dream telepathy and hypnosis at the request of Mickey Hart and Jerry Garcia. This is a must-listen episode for those interested in the mystical and the spiritual, and how they relate to our human journey.Dr. Stanley Krippner has published extensive research that has led to significant advancements in our comprehension of dream telepathy, hypnosis, dissociation, and many other unconventional angles of understanding the human mind. In this conversation Dr. Krippner shares some of the wisdom that he’s learned in his years of study with Oteil and Mike, as they dive into the wonder and mystery of the anomalous. “We got the prognosis and they said, OK, maybe a year we'll see as we kept going. So we keep pushing the outer limits, but it's the perpetual opportunity to immerse yourself in the present. That's ultimately the outcome.” - Alex PeaveyThis week, Oteil and Mike talk with Alex Peavey, a mindfulness consultant and the Team Consultant and Mindfulness Coach for VCU Men’s Basketball. They discuss the process of conceptualizing and emotionally processing your own mortality, along with different approaches to doing so. Alex also shares what music has helped bring him peace recently, and the three reflect on how the pandemic has reshaped their views. Learn more about Alex & the Peavey Project: https://www.thepeaveyproject.org/Alex Peavey is in his 14th year at Collegiate School where he served as the head boys’ varsity basketball coach for 12 years, and he continues to work as a school counselor, assistant boys’ varsity lacrosse coach, and mindfulness teacher. He has been practicing mindfulness since the age of 15, and with the knowledge that it can cultivate peace of mind as well as peak performance, Alex has been teaching these techniques to others for over a decade. In addition to introducing mindfulness to the students, faculty, and parents at Collegiate School, Alex has brought it to “Mindful Mondays” at the Cameron K Gallagher Foundation, colleges and universities across the state, regional and international conferences, correctional facilities, corporations, and the federal government. After almost a lifetime of practicing mindfulness, Alex found these strategies to be of the utmost importance last March when he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. Even in spite of the physical and mental challenges he has faced in the last year, mindfulness has allowed him to choose the path of joy over and over, and this is a path he hopes others have the opportunity to experience in their own lives as well, beginning with the gateways of awareness and compassion.-----------This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week, Mike and Oteil talk with legendary visionary artists and couple Alex & Allyson Grey, who together founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City. Alex & Allyson talk about using psychedelics with intention to find the “mystic light” that runs through everything, and the experience of having your mind opened to love and to the light. They also discuss the experience where their love was solidified, when Alex took LSD for the first time at Allyson’s apartment, and his dark mental state that precipitated this huge life shift. All four share their mystical experiences encountering God, and finding ways to get back to the “flow state,” the awakened creative state where one cohabits with the divine. The wisdom and food for thought is plentiful throughout this conversation. The mystic paintings of Alex Grey articulate realms of psychedelic visionary consciousness, revealing interwoven energies of body and soul, love and spirit, illuminating the anatomical core of each being. Alex’s visual meditations on the nature of life and consciousness, the subject of his art, have reached millions through his five books including three monographs, the exhibition and extensive reproduction of his artwork, speaking appearances including a popular TED talk, stage sets for major rock bands, video animation, and Grammy award winning album art. Allyson Grey is a painter, social sculptor, Alex’s creative and life partner since meeting in art school in 1975. Chaos, Order and Secret Writing comprise the essentialized world view portrayed in Allyson’s paintings. Chaos represents the material world, Order, the interconnected realm of energy and light and Secret Writing articulates the mystic realm of creative expression. MFA, Tufts University. Allyson has long been an art educator, event organizer and a muse to artists worldwide. Together, the Grey’s co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a spiritual creative retreat center outside of New York City. On the forefront of a movement in which painters join musicians on stage, the Grey’s have painted together live before tens of thousands of dancing young people at New York Broadway theaters, at sold-out festivals and arenas in dozens of international cities across five continents. As long-time advocates of “cognitive liberty,” a growing international “sacramental culture” has embraced the Grey’s as important mapmakers and spokespersons for the visionary realm. The Grey’s, with the CoSM team, are currently building Entheon, a Visionary Art sanctuary at CoSM. cosm.orgLinks:Alex Grey on InstagramAlex Grey on FacebookAllyson Grey on InstagramAllyson Grey on FacebookThis podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. “I love Willie Nelson because nobody has a voice like that. Bob Dylan, I wonder if he can even sing? Can he really even sing? That’s a question. But there is no one like him, so we love him. And to me, that's the thing that really draws people in, whether we realize it or not. Is that when someone realizes who they are so strongly, it touches a part of who we are, and we relate to it.” - Victor WootenMike & Oteil are joined by Victor Wooten, a GRAMMY award winning bass player who first came into prominence as a founding member of the super-group Béla Fleck & the Flecktones. Victor also talks about meeting Oteil and Kofi Burbridge as a young man, the admiration he had for them and what he learned from them, and so much more. This episode couldn’t be more packed with wisdom - and opportunities to see the world in a new light. This week, Comes a Time welcomes Denise Kaufman, musician, yogi, activist, founding member of the all-girl SF band Ace of Cups, Merry Prankster, and so much more. Having joined her first Civil Rights picket line at 14 years old, Denise found herself as a young activist in the 1960’s San Francisco in the heart of the same world where the Grateful Dead came to be. Denise shares with Mike and Oteil the incredible tale of meeting Ken Kesey, “getting on the bus,” and getting her Prankster nickname “Mary Microgram.” She also explains what led to her going to music school at 33, her time teaching yoga to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and other celebrities, and opening a private school in Hawaii now in its 44th year of operation. Denise has lived many lives in one with one adventure following the next. Growing up in San Francisco during the 1960s placed Denise Kaufman at the center of a cultural revolution. Her commitment to social justice and exploratory approach to life led her to adventures in counterculture: from being arrested at UC Berkeley's Sproul Hall protests during the Free Speech Movement, to "getting on the bus” (as "Mary Microgram") with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and the Grateful Dead; to forming the legendary Ace of Cups—an all-girl band that opened for Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and Janis Joplin; to being one of the seven founding mothers of Island School on Kauai; to studying with Robert Nadeau Shihan, Yogi Bhajan, Bikram Choudhury, Pattabhi Jois, and Paul Grilley and to teaching yoga to Madonna, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Quincy Jones, and Jane Fonda. Denise lives between Venice Beach and Kauai - playing music, teaching yoga, surfing and continuing to learn, channel inspiration and connect all those around her. Today’s episode is chock-full of adventures from the life of touring musicians. Oteil and Mike are joined by guitarist, producer, and fellow podcaster Eric Krasno. Eric has been a fixture in popular music for decades, and his musical talent and breadth of knowledge is nearly unparalleled. The three discuss the power of discovering certain music at the exact right moment in your life, with Eric sharing his “late” discovery of Bob Dylan. Eric and Oteil trade stories from the road, from embracing being underprepared for gigs and learning on the fly, to reminiscing on the greats they’ve shared stages with and the superpowers they wield. They also discuss the challenge of learning the full Grateful Dead catalogue and its many iterations, and share some of their missteps along the way. For nearly two decades, Eric Krasno has been an omnipresent figure in popular music. We've heard his virtuosic, innovative guitar playing with Soulive and Lettuce (both of which he co-founded), seen him onstage supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones, Dave Mathews Band, John Mayer and The Roots, watched him take home multiple GRAMMY Awards, and benefited from his deft, behind-the-scenes work as a producer and songwriter for everyone from Norah Jones, Tedeschi Trucks, and 50 Cent to Talib Kweli, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. Krasno's recent solo album, 'Blood From A Stone,' reveals a previously unknown and utterly compelling side of his artistry, though, inviting us to bear witness as he both literally and metaphorically finds his voice. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. If you’re interested in the power of mushrooms and the potential for elevation of human consciousness, you won’t want to miss this episode. Mike & Oteil welcome Paul Stamets, mycologist, entrepreneur, researcher, and expert in all things fungi. Also joining the conversation is Bob Weir, legendary Grateful Dead singer and rhythm guitarist. Paul is a treasure trove of scientific information, delving deep into the latest research happening with Psilocybin and other medicinal mushrooms, from treating addiction to PTSD, to stimulation of neurogenesis (what he calls “Einstein mushrooms”) and even COVID-19. Bob chimes in with his own mycelial anecdotes and his predictions about how the world will react to the increasing research around psychoactive mushrooms. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll also hear how Paul became the inspiration for Lieutenant Paul Stamets on Star Trek, an astro-mycologist. Paul Stamets, speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur, is considered an intellectual and industry leader in fungi: habitat, medicinal use, and production. He lectures extensively to deepen the understanding and respect for the organisms that literally exist under every footstep taken on this path of life. His presentations cover a range of mushroom species and research showing how mushrooms can help the health of people and planet. His central premise is that habitats have immune systems, just like people, and mushrooms are cellular bridges between the two. Our close evolutionary relationship to fungi can be the basis for novel pairings in the microbiome that lead to greater sustainability and immune enhancement.Resources for more information:https://paulstamets.com/https://fungi.com/http://mushroomreferences.com/You can find Paul on social media: @PaulstametsThis podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
