Let's talk about teaching, which means let's also talk about racism—attitudes, stereotypes, prejudices, for sure, and much, much more. Let's talk about structures and institutions, as well, about laws and legacies, cultures and the dogma of common sense. Co-host Adam Bush and I are joined in conversation with Christopher Emdin and Sam Seidel. After Chris published the wildly successful and useful book, For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood . . . and the Rest of Y'all Too, he and Sam, long-time friends and comrades, decided to reach out to over twenty white anti-racist teachers—including my brother Rick—to tell their own stories, creating From White Folks Who Teach in the Hood: Reflections on Race, Culture, and Identity, a dazzling companion text and a powerful guide to teaching toward enlightenment and liberation.

In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Emdin, a transformative figure in education known for his innovative approaches that integrate hip-hop culture into learning. Here are the key points from our conversation:Personal Journey: Chris shared his experiences growing up in New York City and attending Brooklyn Tech, where he often felt pressured to adopt an identity that didn't reflect his true self. This sense of dehumanization fueled his passion for reshaping educational experiences for marginalized youth.Concept of "Ratchetness": We explored the idea of "ratchetness," which Chris defines as an authentic expression of identity that challenges societal norms. He argues that this concept allows individuals from marginalized backgrounds to reclaim their narratives and showcase their true selves unapologetically.Empowerment through Pedagogy: Chris emphasized that effective pedagogy is a powerful tool for transformation. He believes that teaching should not only impart knowledge but also empower students to embrace their full identities, fostering a sense of belonging and self-actualization in schools. The Role of Authenticity: The conversation highlighted the importance of authenticity in education. Chris argues that students should be encouraged to express their true selves, which can lead to greater engagement and passion for learning.Vision for the Future: Chris's work is driven by a commitment to creating educational spaces where all students feel valued and can thrive. He envisions schools as environments that nurture creativity and individuality, preparing students to inherit the earth with confidence. This episode is a deep dive into the intersection of culture and education, showcasing how embracing diverse identities can lead to a more equitable and inspiring learning environment.Learn how to join us in New Orleans for the Teaching Learning Coaching Conference this October by clicking here. Welcome back to Season 10 of the OEA Grow podcast, in which our host Sakura Hamada explores how we as educators can support newly arrived students. In this first episode of the season, Sakura speaks with Ethelyn Tumalad from Clackamas High School about her work with the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This program supports students throughout all four years of high school to prepare them for college as first-generation students. Ethelyn tells us that the goal is twofold - to help students discover their authentic selves and feel confident that they belong. Sakura and Ethelyn discuss from personal experience how terrifying the classroom can be for newly arrived students. They explain how educators in any classroom can support students by really listening to each student and celebrating accomplishments rather than focusing on deficits. This week's episode will suggest ways to incorporate student-centered learning to help students respect one another and see the strengths in each other's differences.    Resources -  OEA Member Spotlight on Ethelyn Tumalad Ethelyn Tumalad named Oregon Teacher of the Year, 2022 AVID program   Books recommended by Ethelyn -   Tony DelaRosa. Christopher Emdin wants schools to be a place that embraces a whole student's identity. For far too long, public education has been stuck in a time where it was not designed for all students, especially students of color, he says. Emdin, an associate professor at Teacher's College, has long focused on issues of race, class, and diversity in education. Now, he's proposing a new educational model to help teachers and students celebrate rachet identity in the classroom. He reimagines schools where educators use authenticity as a driving factor in their work. In this episode, Emdin shares his philosophy of being rachetdemic, how educators can become rachetdemic, and why it matters.

In this episode of Fulbright Forward, Fulbright Americas Diversity and Inclusion Liaison speaks with U.S. ETA alum to Guatemala, Jonathan Peraza Campos about the critical need to redefine and reimagine how folks from the United States conduct English teaching abroad, in particular within Latin America and the Caribbean. As Jonathan shares in the episode, this is about disrupting “perceptions that the United States is a white, wealthy, and perfect English-speaking country by exposing [students] to the multiracial, multicultural, and multilingual diversity and history of the U.S.”  Through this discussion we reflect on how Jonathan navigated his ETA-ship, how he implemented a critical English-teaching praxis with his students, and what any of us can do to move us towards a more politically conscious English teaching world where the full humanity of our students and ourselves is celebrated, and exclusionary narratives are questioned and dismantled. Jonathan Peraza Campos, a U.S. Salvadoran/Guatemalan educator, organizer, abolitionist thinker, and Central American scholar whose work focuses on organizing around racial, immigrant, and educational justice, on providing a critical and multifaceted education to Latinx youth throughout the Atlanta metro area, and to building bridges built on solidarity and connection between communities in Central America and U.S. Central Americans. Every field worker or facilitator carries internalized expectations about how we add value. Relinquishing the need to prove one's competence is difficult. Experts are 'answers' looking for problems to solve. Positive deviance practitioners, on the other hand, are community mobilizers who catalyze others' empowerment. What do you do when your schoolwide expectations aren't culturally responsive? How do you know when they are?In this episode of Expert Instruction, we're talked to Athena Vernon. With racial equity issues top of mind, we speak with educator Erin Jones. In 2016, she came within a point of winning the race for the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and was the first black woman candidate to run for statewide office. We talk about a series of online courses for adults and children on racial equity that Erin is teaching during the pandemic. And we get her thoughts on how we can be engaging in the difficult but necessary conversations we need to have in this country on race. I graduated from Temple University in December 2014. My content area of focus in college was history, but after graduation I also pursued a certification in English. After graduating I began teaching at a middle school in West Philadelphia, but the following year I returned to the neighborhood high school in North Philadelphia where I completed my student teaching fieldwork the year prior. Emdin, who is a professor of Math, Science and Technology at Teacher’s College (Columbia University), is a leading expert on ways to engage and inspire young students of color in school by connecting their daily lived experiences, styles of communication and natural genius to academic learning. On this episode, Tim and Chris discuss this “reality pedagogy,” and how teachers so often resist its use, settling instead for stale and failed approaches to educating such students. They also discuss the myth that money alone will solve the issues facing urban education, the problem of white savior syndrome manifested by many white teachers in black and brown communities, and the way that oftentimes even educators of color adopt habits and mentalities that further marginalize children of color. A must-listen-to episode on a critical topic for all educators, parents, and persons concerned about the future of schooling in America.
