This episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast is Dr. Kyle Pfaffenbach. Kyle is an Associate Professor of nutrition and exercise science at Eastern Oregon University, and also works as a Performance Nutrition Consultant to Olympians and World Champions, including the Brooks' Beasts Track Club. Warning, this episode starts off a bit science heavy, diving into Kyle's previous research on protein structure and folding. This is only for a small part of this wonderful conversation, but feel free to skip from 4:45 to 14:15. We transition from science to practice, discussing the importance of science-backed recommendations tailored to individuals and their own experiences. We go deep on balancing macronutrients for athletes, starting with protein. Kyle and I discuss protein recommendations for how much and when, debunking the “more protein is better” belief. We highlight that over-focusing on protein may impair performance and health when you're lacking fats and carbohydrates. Kyle shares insights from his work helping Olympians and world-class athletes fuel, underscoring the importance of total energy intake, as well as fats and carbs, even when body composition changes are desired. We discuss the effects of underfueling on performance: hint, hint, if you're having bad workouts, try eating more! Food is more than fuel. Kyle talks about the role of nutrition in your body for signaling and other essential processes. Food is also for enjoyment and even elite athletes incorporate “fun” foods into their lives. While the media, social media and influencers in particular, demonize certain foods and nutrients, both Kyle and I believe an “all foods fit” approach best supports health and performance. This highlights the importance of working with trusted nutrition professionals and being careful of where you go for nutrition advice. TOPIC TIMESTAMPS: 4:45 Kyle's protein research (this is a science-heavy section, feel free to skip ahead to :X) 14:15 The importance of understanding science, then… 17:30 …tailoring research-backed approaches to individuals 23:00 Protein recommendations and timing for athletes 29:20 Is more protein better? 33:40 The importance of fats for female athletes 35:40 Balancing carbohydrates with proteins; macronutrient breakdown for athletes 40:10 Problem solving bad workouts 45:20 Food as signals for your body 49:00 Nutrition complexity: no dumb questions! 52:00 Preventing nutrition stress and making all foods fit, including fast food 57:40 Working with and trusting nutrition professionals for optimal performance 1:01:35 End of the podcast questions Find Kyle's research here: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Kyle-Pfaffenbach Follow Kyle on Instagram @kylepfaffenbach and me, your host Lindsey Cortes, @female.athlete.nutrition SIGN UP FOR EMAIL LIST: https://riseupnutrition.activehosted.com/f/6 Check out our NEW website with resources, blogs, and more: www.FemaleAthleteNutritionPodcast.com Join our amazing "FANS": Female Athlete Nutrition Supporters by considering a contribution of just $5 a month: https://www.patreon.com/femaleathletenutrition Health Practitioner or Dietitian? Having served in several roles as Steve's professional career has continued to evolve, Eli Lilly was a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the sports world. Steve worked for Eli Lilly in the Diabetes Unit facilitating presentations for Endocrinologist's, Primary Care Physicians, and clinic staff, bringing awareness to all of the benefits our diabetic medications provide. In 2015 while working at New York Life his first child was born, in which the decision was made to take a couple of years off after a two-year stint as a Life Insurance Executive. “My time there was an amazing ride, having been recognized as the Top Performer in the African American Unit, 2014 “Rookie of the Year”, and the culmination of it all was receiving the Ben Feldman “Life Excellence Award” which is considered the Heisman Trophy of the life insurance industry.” Before joining New York Life, Steve was a successful sports agent having worked with the likes of Gary Payton, Rodney Stuckey, Kevin Durant, Jamal Crawford, Dwight Howard, DeMar DeRozan, and Isaiah Thomas to name a few. His main reason for wanting to be in the Sports Management industry was he saw a need that was not being met by most agents, and that was a lack of education & empowerment of African American athletes. In representing athletes, it was important for Steve to make an IMPACT off the court. If you were to speak with any of the athletes that he's worked with, they would tell you that Steve always promoted LEGACY and using your platform to create an eco-system of business minded individuals!!! “Legacy is powerful, and more often than not, it is easily overlooked and as a sports agent, I have an obligation to look out for not only their best-interest, but also their families.” In life, sometimes there is a higher calling, and I was always taught that when called upon, you must be obedient. As a sports agent, it was hard to be in a world where you often need to keep your inner circle small, not knowing who was looking out for you, so I made the decision to walk away. The beauty of this story is that Steve Banks is back where he belongs and will make an IMPACT in the lives of the athletes that have a desire to be great. “Being able to incorporate my values, standards, morals into my work are what truly drives me to lead.” In his free time, Steve serves on the Board of Trustee's for The Bush School. He volunteers with members of his fraternity – Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Steve also serves on the board of Baseball Beyond Borders, a non-profit organization that uses baseball as a platform to engage inner-city youth, while developing a passion for education and developing life skills. As a Black man, it is critical that he dedicates time to mentoring and supporting the upcoming generation of young people. Steve received his Bachelor of Science from Eastern Oregon University, where he was a student athlete. He is also a graduate of Georgetown University where he received his Masters of Sports Industry Management. Steve, his wife Maryjane and their two sons live in the Central District area of Seattle. This is the one thing I will share with entrepreneurs. Don't be so fixated on the product, as you're thinking about if you want to be an entrepreneur, if you want to step out of your comfort zone. The one thing that I've learned is that people often times get fixated on the product. What I've learned traditionally is that people invest in people, right? The product okay, that I get it. But I want to know about you.
Head Coach of Eastern Orego University Kyle Treadway joins us to talk building his program, and we will dive into some great pitching talk!
When you think baseball in Central Alberta, one family name is synonymous with the game: Northcott. And while he may too humble to admit it, Harold Northcott is an Alberta baseball legend. The Clive, Alberta native had a storied playing career which took him to Eastern Oregon University, where he helped the Mountaineers set team records for wins in each of his three seasons. That's where he also earned the nickname “The Giant Killer” for becoming the first pitcher in school history to beat two games against big PAC-10 teams. Northcott went on to represent Canada on the international stage a number of times, including being named the most valuable Canadian at the 1985 Intercontinental Cup. He started his coaching career in 1988, helping guide numerous teams in St. Paul, Rocky Mountain House and elsewhere to provincial titles. He's also served as the Canadian National Youth Team pitching coach in the 1990s, which featured names like Jordan Zimmermann, Ryan Dempster and Eric Gagne, then coached with the National Senior Team at the Pan Am Games amongst others. His wife, Barb, is heavily involved in the game, and all three of his kids – Dustin, Chad and Heidi – all blazed their own trails in baseball. Recently, a little birdy by the name of Brad Mills told us that his long-time friend was being inducted into the EOU Athletics Hall of Fame this month. As it turns out, the recognition was a long time coming, as was this great conversation I had with Harold Northcott last week.
This show is definitely authentic, complete with real tractor noise in the background. Yes, we're coming to you live from the Ellis family's farm in Mollala, Oregon where they operate their farm-to-consumer business and live a very full life. We had Laura Ellis on our 58th show released back on September 11th, 2020 and our hosts are very interested in checking in with her to see what's been happening with the farm and the business. Just to give a quick background, the Ellis family – Mike, Laura and sons Samuel and Mason – began with Mike and Laura meeting at Eastern Oregon University, where Mike received his degree in Range Ecology and Management. Laura grew up on a rural Alaska family farm so it pretty much was a match made in heaven. They first lived on Mike's family farm in Mollala which is over half a century old and where they have constantly enriched the soil and quality of its output. But opportunity called and the couple started their own farm business and fruit spread line in 2014. All their fruits and berries are grown to the highest standards with a finely honed commitment to quality. They have created farm-to-jar products from the fruits they both grow and source, while also using local ingredients such as Oregon rum, sea salt from the beautiful coastline, and freshly ground spices from a Portland shop. They use certified Organic ingredients (such as sugar and lemon juice) whenever possible. They don't add any high fructose corn syrup, artificial preservatives, flavors, or coloring. Everything they make is natural and non-GMO. However, on the day of our first show with Laura, they had to wonder what was in store for the future. That day, the family had a combine catch fire and at the same time, that's when Western Oregon wildfires started happening and they didn't know if they would have to evacuate the farm. Luckily, they avoided disaster and kept moving forward in their journey. It has been a learning experience and Laura shares some lessons with our audience of food entrepreneurs. For one thing, their original goal was to build a big business. But after time, they realized what they really wanted was to own and work their own farm, grow and produce a quality product and support their family. Scaling and all its inherent risk wasn't really a strategy for them. That big change in strategy has paid off. Not only have they created a business that has involved other family members, their personal relationships with the community have allowed them to survive the wildfire setbacks and cash flow difficulties they have faced. Succession is also an ongoing question, as passing down the farm and business to their son or sons is a possibility and will resolve itself over time. But Laura and Mike absolutely do not pressure them one way or the other. The family also has learned to pivot on a moment's notice, as weather, fires, crop yields and consumer tastes change continuously. They have come up with their offering formula, however. There are six fruit spread flavors that are standard, every other flavor is based on the local availability and quality. This formula has allowed them to keep their customers supplied with a stable supply of favorites while sprinkling a surprise flavor on a regular basis to keep things interesting. Distribution has obviously increased since the last show, as Mt. Hope fruit spreads are available in select stores across the US and still available both online or by pickup at the farm. There are almost 200 school districts in Oregon, and each one is responsible for selecting its own curriculum. Oregon has a list of pre-approved curricula districts can choose from, but that means some schools are using discredited systems for teaching reading. Now, advocates, researchers and teachers are trying to incorporate new ways of teaching that focus on the science behind learning to read. Ronda Fritz is an associate professor in Eastern Oregon University's College of Education and is the director of the Reading Clinic there. Amanda Francois is a 4th grade teacher at Gilbert Heights Elementary in the David Douglas School District and has recently brought what she's learned from LETRS, a science of reading course, into her classroom. They join us to share what makes the science of reading work and the challenges some teachers are now seeing.

Peter Maille is a professor of economics at Eastern Oregon University and one of the authors of the report. Jim Hamsher is the Grant County Commissioner. They both join us to share the role the federal agency plays in Eastern Oregon communities.

Listen on: iTunes Anchor Spotify Google Guest: Rodell Razor Social Media: @RodellRazor If you've never felt like quitting, your dreams just arent big enough” ~ R. Razor Making dreams become a reality has been the mission Rodell Razor has been on since he came into the world back on a chilly 39-degree day in Anchorage, AK. That cold, arctic January morning back in 1987 would forever change the dynamic of Rodell's significant journey through life. The first-born child to Jovan & Natalie Razor, Rodell always shown that his talents would be what propelled him into greatness. Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, Natalie instantly became a single mother raising 5 beautiful children on her own. Even though Ms. Razor made sure she kept her children happy through the tough times, Rodell's youth was riddled with watching his mother work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to try to make ends meet for their bare necessities. This not only sparked his desire to be a provider, but it gave life to Rodell's passion for wanting to help his mother in any way he could. As a child, Rodell's dream was to play professional football. He knew that a salary from the NFL would skyrocket his family's status from being restricted to poverty to wealthy overnight. All he had to do was remain focused. His work ethic on the field at Federal Way High School, in Federal Way, WA proved that he not only had what it took, but he could lead a team to victory. With his football achievements in one hand and his average academic achievements in the other, Rodell was accepted to Eastern Oregon University. His college career not only yielded an MBA in Business, but it afforded him the opportunity to exercise his networking abilities and forge valuable friendships with people who are now considered to be a part of his family. Logan Deroin SPT, CSCS is currently a 3rd year PT student at Touro University Nevada just outside Las Vegas and set to graduate in June 2019 after 2 more clincals (one acute care one outpatient/sports) with plans to take boards in April.Logan has always loved playing sports. He was never the most talented so when he discovered lifting in high school he had found his way to separate himself from his peers. He was big into power lifting and anything to improve performance, not so much physique. He played football and basketball in high school and was lucky enough to get a partial scholarship to play football at Eastern Oregon University, a small NAIA school. He was a student-athlete at Eastern Oregon University for 4 years where he studied Exercise Science and played football. Going into undergrad he knew he wanted to do something medical, he just didn’t know what. While playing football in college he sustained a few injuries (ankles and shoulder). he worked closely with the ATC and saw a PT in town. This made him realize that PT may be best profession to combine his passion for exercise with the ability to help people. He came to PT only to find out this isn’t always the case and there is a serious Ther Ex component missing. To fill this gap, he pursed and sat for the CSCS in April 2018.After graduation its Logan's goal to work with athletes and active people and play a role in their return to doing what they love. He is currently in the process of applying to a sports residency for after graduation. To work towards this goal, he has been trying to take in and apply as much information (outside of school) as he can through reading research articles (aiming for at least 1 to 2 per week) and books (such as Conscious Coaching, Atomic Habits, and The Charism Myth) and reaching out to professionals that he can aspire to be on social media. You can follow Logan on Instagram @loganderoin.spt.cscsSign up for the Level Up Initiative and join the Facebook group Find more at missingvariable.comFollow me onInstagram - @missing.variableTwitter - @mv_mcclanahan Follow the show onInstagram - @missingvariablepodFacebook - @missingvariableTwitter - @mssingvariable Got a show idea or want to be a guest?Missingvariablepodcast@gmail.com

Welcome Daysi from Oregon to Immigration MIC! Daysi came to the US from Mexico at 11 years old, and through her experiences as a DACA recipient, she has become a fighter and advocate for mental health. Her family had roots in the US, with her father working seasonally in California and Oregon, and traveling back to be with his family, eventually sending for their family to join him. Their family moved around quite a bit in Oregon, which Daysi recounts has given her the experience of interacting with different communities. Daysi was the salutatorian for her high school, being involved in sports, being passionate about history — graduating in 2012, DACA being announced a few months later. “I ended up having 2-3 jobs at a time, help my parents will the bills, I could drive, and I could go to college” — DACA had a huge impact on Daysi’s life, and she began paying to forward immediately, establishing an organization “United Undocumented Students” for DACA students, and allies, to be able to raise awareness in the conservative area of the state. “I wanted to get stuff done, I wanted to make noise/ but the more I got into it, the more it drained me” Daysi opens up about the good, challenging experiences of being an activist. “I’ve also met great people along the way.” Daysi also becomes super candid about a dark period in her life where she contemplated suicide in high school, and the ways she fought back from those thoughts, and seeking professional health as recent as this past year. “I’ve learned you have to stand up and fight for yourself” Daysi give words of encouragement for other that are going through tough times being caught in the middle of the national immigration conversation, and the importance of connecting to others to both find strength and a support system.
