April is Earth Month, and what a perfect time to celebrate as the onset of spring brings the first glimpse of nature's fresh vibrancy! While every day could technically be considered Earth Day, April 22 bears the official moniker and is a call to action. With a theme of “Our Power, Our Planet,” each of us is encouraged to determine what this means to us and how we will put our ideas into action. The possibilities are endless and each action toward environmental stewardship makes a difference. HSD embraces and demonstrates conservation practices throughout the year. In the month of April, the days get longer, the grass is greener, and temperatures are more moderate. Earth Month is a perfect time for buildings to take advantage of these conditions to conserve natural resources through efforts like water management, daylight harvesting, and bringing outside air into buildings. This year, HSD is also running a Resource Conservation Challenge that is open to all teachers and administrators, which encourages conservation while at school, work, home, or traveling. Students - ask your teachers about this challenge! For those who are motivated by gamification, try the Earth Month BINGO card! This activity is designed to bring awareness and prompts for more sustainable practices. Print it out and post it on a refrigerator or classroom bulletin board for full family and/or classroom participation, or take the conservation one step further and keep it handy on a phone or computer. The topics listed on the card are simply a guide. The most effective actions - and the ones you're likely to stick with - come from topics that interest you. Have fun!For more ideas and inspiration, visit our Resource Conservation webpage and earthday.org. Our featured event is Liberty's HVAC and boiler replacement project. Even though Liberty High School was just 21 years old in 2024, its proprietary and unique-to-that-building HVAC direct digital control - or DDC - system was at the end of its life. Additionally, three of the school's five boilers had either already failed or were failing. These factors were contributing to poor system performance, high energy usage, and occupant discomfort. The time had come to replace the failing equipment, but with an overall price tag of $2.2 million the District was left wondering how the project could be completed. Energy Services Company. Willdan was hired to assist. Willdan's team worked with the Energy Trust of Oregon and the Oregon Department of Energy to find funding opportunities. With tremendous success, the total Energy Trust incentive awarded was $636,000, which is the largest ever awarded for a single HVAC project. The balance of the project cost was covered by the Department of Energy's SB 1149 Public Purchase Charge program. We now have upgraded DDCs for Liberty's HVAC system, and four new high-efficiency boilers instead of five, which are anticipated to result in an annual energy savings of $140,000. A representative from Willdan presented the School Board with a ceremonial check for the Energy Trust incentive at the February 25 Board meeting. Many thanks to our Facilities team and Resource Conservation Manager Mia Hocking for all of their hard work and dedication to seeing this important project through to its completion. February is National Career and Technical Education Month, an annual public awareness campaign sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education, which encourages us to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements of CTE programs and educators across the nation. Here in Hillsboro, we have much to celebrate as we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for students through our robust CTE and Career and College Pathway programs. In HSD, our 37 CTE programs are an integral part of our larger Career and College Pathway system, which offers 65 programs across the district at the high school level. These programs provide students with hands-on learning experiences that connect them to high-demand careers in more than 13 industry sectors. Additionally, our Career and College Pathway system supports students K-12 through targeted career exploration and postsecondary planning initiatives, ensuring every student is equipped with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their future. This month, we proudly recognize the contributions of our 46 dedicated CTE educators, whose pivotal role in shaping our students' futures cannot be overstated. Through engaging, career-connected learning, our educators help bridge the skills gap, foster innovation, and empower students to explore their passions while building a strong foundation for their postsecondary success. Join us in celebrating the incredible work of our CTE educators and the opportunities they provide to students throughout Hillsboro School District! To learn more about CTE and Career & College Pathways in HSD, please visit hsd.k12.or.us/ccp.   Our featured student is Liberty High School senior Ryan Howard. A field trip to the Portland Black College Expo transformed into a life-changing opportunity for Ryan when he joined fellow members of the Black Student Union at the Tony Hopson Sr. Center for Self Enhancement on Thursday, January 16. There, he received an unexpected full-ride scholarship to Langston University - Oklahoma's only Historically Black College and University, and the westernmost public four-year HBCU in the United States. The Expo provided students with a unique opportunity to explore academic options and connect directly with representatives from HBCUs and other colleges. The event featured workshops, financial aid information sessions, and one-on-one interactions with college representatives. Ryan's success story exemplifies the opportunities available through such networking events. Congratulations and way to go, Ryan! You make us Proud to be HSD! January is School Board Appreciation Month! We'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our seven elected School Board members for their voluntary service to the District and to the greater Hillsboro community: Chair Ivette Pantoja, Vice Chair Mark Watson, and Directors See Eun Kim, Erika Lopez, Patrick Maguire, Nancy Thomas, and Monique Ward. We would also like to recognize and thank our three student representatives to the Board: Gwen Kondor from Century High School, Kal Sibbel from Liberty High School, and Abraham Staffa from Hillsboro Online Academy. Board members put in countless hours overseeing and providing community voice to District operations, as well as advocating for the resources and opportunities students need to be successful. For all you do, School Board members, we thank you! Our Featured Staff Member is Poynter Library/Media Assistant Kim Parrett. Walk into her library and you instantly feel a sense of welcome and calm. With soft music playing, spotless organization, inviting displays, and a multitude of soft seating options, you definitely feel like you've entered an oasis. That atmosphere is something Kim has worked hard to achieve. Not only that, but through a variety of purposeful actions - from grant writing to surveying students about the books they want to read - she has grown her library's collection with $15,500 worth of high interest, age-appropriate, and culturally and linguistically diverse books! Kim is quick to give credit to the Hillsboro Schools Foundation and local businesses for a majority of the infrastructure changes she's been able to make. Many of the books she's added are because of HSF grants and gifts, and much of the furniture was thanks to pass-through donations HSF received from organizations in the area. In addition, Kim received a $1000 HSF grant this year to enhance a makerspace that she converted from an old storage area off of the main library. Hillsboro School District Weekly Hot News Podcast

In mid-May of this year, school districts across the state received the final State School Fund reconciliation for the 2022-23 school year and revised assumptions for the 2023-24 school year.  For context, and to simplify a system that is quite complex, public schools in Oregon build their budgets on two primary things:  Revenue - money they project to receive from the Oregon Department of Education for the Average Daily Membership, or ADM, of enrolled students, as well as a variety of other calculations that take into account teacher experience, students requiring additional services, transportation reimbursement, timber funds, local property tax collections, and so on.  Expenditures - money they expect to spend on staffing, benefits, supplies, utilities, administration, service provision, etc.  ODE adjusts the ADM allocation multiple times each year as actual information is received from each of Oregon's 197 school districts, with a final reconciliation completed the May following the completion of any given school year.  What HSD learned with the most recent reconciliation was that, due to a decline in enrollment and revisions to the ADM allocation, we received a negative State School Fund adjustment for the 2022-23 school year of more than $4 million, as well as revised assumptions for the 2023-24 school year of nearly $3 million. After running the June payroll, which is when approximately 25 percent of the District's expenditures are made each year, it also became clear that expenditures in 2023-24 were higher than anticipated in some areas, due in large part to factors outside of our control and the unknown impact of new legislation and associated costs. Because school districts are required to have balanced budgets each year, this burden was shifted to the 2024-25 school year.  The full impact of these prior-year revenue and expenditure changes on the 2024-25 budget was not clear until after September payroll was completed and October 1 enrollment numbers were in. We now know that HSD is facing a shortfall of $9.5 million this school year. Administration has come up with a list of strategies for closing the budget gap in ways that do not directly affect students; however, there are some unknowns as we are still in the midst of bargaining with our licensed and classified employee unions.  Aside from our diligence in managing the budget shortfall we are experiencing this year, a very important task for us is to advocate the Legislature for stable and adequate K-12 school funding in the 2025-27 biennium, a reduction in carve-outs from the State School Fund, and a correction to/avoidance of new unfunded mandates. Visit our website to learn more.  Our Featured Students are our 2024-25 Student Representatives to the School Board: Gwen Kondor, junior at Century High School; Kal Sibbel, senior at Liberty High School; and Abraham Staffa, junior at Hillsboro Online Academy. They were sworn in at the Board's regular session meeting on Tuesday, September 24. Student Representatives are non-voting members of the Board and serve in an advisory capacity, providing an invaluable experience to both the students and Board members. The opportunity to serve as a Student Representative rotates between our high schools each year. Next year, students from Glencoe, Hilhi, and Oak Street Campus can apply. With C.J. Spiller in the news recently upon the announcement of his induction into Clemson's Ring of Honor, we go back four years to an extended interview with the former superstar and current running backs coach. Back then, Spiller was preparing for his wedding. He had not yet joined Dabo Swinney's staff. He was a volunteer track coach at Liberty High School, trying to impart some of the lessons that helped made him a great football player and track athlete. In the course of this interview Spiller covered a number of topics, including the back of a business card that Swinney turned into a pseudo contract with Spiller to assure that he followed through on his commitment to Clemson in 2006 (Swinney was then Clemson's receivers coach). Spiller did follow through on the unconventional path to Clemson, and his decision could reasonably classified as the most important by a player in Clemson's football history. Because without him, it's hard to imagine Swinney later leading Clemson to prominence and dominance. This interview took place in late-April of 2020 after COVID had shut down just about everything. That summer, Spiller would join Swinney's staff as an intern. A year later he became running backs coach after Tony Elliott's departure for the head job at Virginia, and he is now preparing for his fourth season in charge of the position.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to prioritizing and promoting open conversations about our social and emotional wellbeing. Mental health encompasses how we manage stress, connect with others, and make healthy choices. Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. We can support our mental health by focusing on self-care, establishing a routine, maintaining healthy social connections, developing positive coping strategies, and having open conversations about mental health needs. In HSD, we encourage students, staff, and families to: Learn more about mental health and protective factors, Speak respectfully and inclusively about mental health,  Seek help if they are struggling with their mental health and encourage others to do the same, and   Create safe and supportive environments for open conversations about mental health. If you need help connecting to resources in our community, you can talk with a school counselor or explore the resources on our website.  Together, let's prioritize mental health awareness and create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to prioritize their wellbeing. Our featured student is Liberty High School senior Jared Lim. Jared represented HSD and Team Oregon at the International Science and Engineering Fair - or ISEF - in Los Angeles the week of May 12th through 17th. His project, Connexelerator, took first place in the Computer Science and Robotics category at Intel's Beaverton-Hillsboro Science Expo in March, which both qualified him for the Northwest Science Expo on April 5th, and earned him a trip to ISEF. Connexelerator is an Artificial Intelligence-powered language learning application that Jared felt compelled to develop after his own experiences with learning multiple languages, including Malay, English, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese. It made its debut during the 2023 Congressional App Challenge; and while it didn't win, it allowed Jared to meet Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, spurred him to make improvements to his user interface, and has led him to his recent science fair successes. It also gained him a referral to another international program, “RISE for the World,” where he will compete among 500 finalists at this year's event in June. Learn more about Jared and his Connexelerator app on our website. There will be no school for all students on Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day. School resumes for all students on Tuesday, May 28th. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Some of today's top storiesA man is in the hospital this morning following an officer-involved shooting in northwest Bakersfield.    It happened in a neighborhood down the street from Liberty High School. Last night it all started as a welfare check for a man reported to be suffering with a mental health crisis and possibly having a gun.    Over the course of several hours last night, deputies say they arrived at the scene and tried several ways to de-escalate the situation.     K-C-S-O says the subject allegedly fired on deputies, hence the officer-involved-shooting.     No Sheriff's Office personnel were injured, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. This is an ongoing investigation and K-C-S-O is asking to to contact the Sheriff's Office if you have any information.     That phone number is going to be (661) 861-3110.Now to education news this morning...    The Kern County Board of Education voted last night to adopt a policy that helps determine the appropriateness of books in schools.     For months... the policy had sparked frustrations and even verbal attacks on board members out of concerns this would mean a ban on books.     17's Jenny Huh files this report. And a local family is still searching for justice after a woman was shot to death in east Bakersfield.      The family of Margarita "Maggie" Lopez was at yesterday's Panama-Buena Vista Union School District board meeting to demand Paul Magallanes, a teacher, not be paid during his leave.    Magallanes was booked on suspicion of Lopez's murder, but two days later, he was released. 17 news attempted to contact Magallanes, but we were unable to reach him.    Once again, he has not been arrested or charged in this case.    In a statement, the School District said Magallanes has been on administrative leave since his arrest and will not be returning.    This case is still under investigationNow to an update on a story we brought you yesterday morning.    We are learning three families are left homeless after flames roared through an apartment building in Oildale.     17's Mikhala Armstrong spoke to one of the victims who lost everything.

Officers at the school say they looked into the threat but say it wasn't credible.     We asked KHSD officials what exactly was written inside the bathroom, but have not heard back as of newstime. And another threat at a Bakersfield school - this one targeting Harris Elementary School.    According to Bakersfield Police, two people in a car made a simulated firearm with their hands and made threats to shoot.    The school was placed on lockdown.    BPD later determined there was no credible threat.

As you know, HSD is now offering free meals to all students, regardless of income, thanks to a change in certification requirements for the Community Eligibility Provision of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. This certification will remain in effect through at least the 2026-27 school year.  During this time, starting in the 2024-25 school year, we will be instituting a new process to qualify families for a partial or full reduction of various district fees. These include OSAA-sponsored athletics and activities, Marching Band and Colorguard, as well as AP and IB exams at the high school level; access to the Athletic/Activities Scholarship at elementary and middle schools; and low-cost internet access and/or hotspots at all levels.  As part of the annual online verification of student information process in the late summer/early fall, all families will now have the option of completing a simple family income survey.  Those who do not wish to participate, or whose household income would not qualify them for a reduction, would be responsible for paying the full amount of fees due. Those whose household income meets the federally-defined reduced-price level would qualify for a 50 percent reduction in fees, and those whose household income meets the federally-defined free level would qualify for a full reduction in fees.  We are pleased to be able to offer an equitable way for families to access partial and full fee reductions, as needed. This is a new process for us, and we will likely make adjustments and enhancements along the way. Learn more on our website.  Our featured student is Liberty High School sophomore Matthew Hui! He took first place in the State Chess for Success tournament on Sunday, April 14th. Mathew has been playing chess since 1st grade, and is fascinated by the uniqueness of the game. “For the week leading up to State, I practiced as much chess as possible to prepare for the tournament,” he explains.  “I studied new openings, new tactics, new traps, sharpened my calculation speed and accuracy, and increased my mental stamina. Even at the tournament, I would continue to learn more in between games in order to prepare myself for upcoming rounds.” Aside from chess, Matthew loves swimming, playing the piano, solving the Rubik's Cube, and playing video games and strategy board games. In the Hillsboro School District, we are committed to all students graduating career and college ready. Not only is it the district's mission, it's our passion and commitment to students and the broader community. Our school counselors and career and technical education teachers play an integral role in the achievement of this mission each and every day.   National School Counseling Week will be celebrated from February 5th through 9th, 2024 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems, as well as how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. This year's theme is "School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused." National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  Please celebrate the imperative work of the 64 school counselors, 10 Student Support & Wellness Counselors and 4 Mental Health Care Coordinators in HSD! February is also National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education. Specifically, this month, we recognize the contributions of our CTE teachers and their pivotal role in the development of CTE programming in HSD. These dedicated educators are instrumental in shaping the future of our students. They provide hands-on training, real-world skills, and valuable insights into a variety of career paths, ensuring our students are well-prepared for success in today's job market. CTE teachers not only bridge the skills gap but also inspire innovation and creativity in our classrooms. Their commitment to excellence empowers students to discover their passions and chart a course toward a prosperous future.  Please celebrate the career-connected work of the 45 CTE educators in our 35 Career and Technical Education programs in HSD! Our Featured Event was a visit to Liberty High School's Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Design programs on Thursday, January 25th by Oregon's U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Students and staff talked to the Congresswoman about their unique classroom spaces and Falcon Farm, and the opportunities they have to grow and sell produce and related products, as well as design and construct items with the environment in mind. A very cool thing they did with her was show her how they turn some of the corn they grow into yummy tortillas! As one student worked on hand-grinding the kernels that had been treated with calcium hydroxide, two others were mixing that fresh masa with a bit of store-bought masa flour, water, and salt to make tortillas. Still other students cooked the tortillas and added some cheese on top then set them out for fellow students and the guests to top with a variety of salsas that students had previously made! February is Black History Month, and while we do study and celebrate the diversity and contributions of Black/African/African Americans during this time, these conversations and lessons are not limited to the month of February - they take place throughout the entire year. When our students' diversity is appreciated and visible, they all thrive from learning about one another. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that help shape our country's history, present and future. Black History Month is an annual celebration of life stories, achievements, and triumphs by Black/African/African Americans, and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Moreover, it is a time to reflect over how the contributions of Black/African/African American people impact our everyday lives in the present. It's never too early to begin celebrating and teaching your child about Black leaders. Even more importantly, to allow the stories of these leaders to inspire the leadership capacities within your child. Participate in the Black History events, celebrations, and learning opportunities that are scheduled in your community. Ask your child and the staff about the activities and commemorations taking place in their school. Watch videos, read books, and engage with people that represent Black/African/African American heritage and culture.  Also, please plan to attend our district-wide Black History Celebration on Thursday, February 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. at Liberty High School. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Charlene Williams, the first Black woman in Oregon's history to be appointed to the role of Director of the Oregon Department of Education.  Encourage your child to be curious about the contributions and accomplishments of Black people. Together you can explore, discuss, and make connections. Celebrate Black history and cultural diversity all year long! Our featured event is Spartans helping Spartans! On Friday, Jan. 12 Hillsboro High School students Hana Do and Diego Botello Garcia prepared supplemental meals for some of their classmates before the snowy weekend. This student-driven initiative is just one of the many passion projects taken on by the Work Experience class at Hilhi. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We are staying in the Softball world this week - today's guest comes to us expressly recommended by TPP alum Jamie Henk (ep.85) and when Coach Henk talks we listen! We've also got a Team Player Podcast 1st today, as our guest is our first one who is currently serving as both the Head Softball Coach AND Head Principal of Liberty High School! Welcome Karen Slack to the show! - Growing up in Cajun Country, the small town of Jeanerette outside of Lafayette, LA with sugar cane fields and crawfish ponds all around you. It was in 5th grade however that Karen moved to Liberty, and she's been in love with that community ever since. - Coach explains what is was like playing on the 1st ever Liberty High School Softball Team when the sport was offered for the 1st time in 1995, and describes how when she started at UH that there was no softball team. It seems crazy now given the extreme popularity of softball at the college and high school levels but Softball didn't even start at a major university like Texas until 1998. - Karen is an outlier in that she is a coach who has ascended to the highest levels of leadership academically as well. During the course of her storied career she has advanced to serve as both a Department Chair and is currently serving as Head Softball Coach and Head Principal! We discuss how oftentimes coaches get a bad wrap in the classroom, but how in order to be a great coach you really need to be a great teacher, and how she has found that coaches are often amongst the best classroom teachers on her staff, and how there are some excellent classroom-only teachers that she would add to her coaching staff any day! - Karen isn't our 1st TPP alum to win a state championship, heck she isn't our 1st to win multiple championships as Jessica Tully-Mitchell Bragg won 2 state volleyball championships at Denton Calvary Academy. But she is our first to win THREE state titles bringing home the gold in 2018 as well as back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023! Coach tells us what has gone into the tremendous success of late at Liberty High School. - Finally as someone who has dedicated their entire adult life to her beloved Liberty High School, we are treated to Coach Karen Slack's all-time Liberty Panther Softball Mt. Rushmore!! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. Today, I'm in Roanoke Virginia and before we continue our study in Psalm 106, I want to share a special prayer request and take the time to honor and celebrate the life of a dear friend who went to be with the Lord. This afternoon I will be officiating the homegoing service of David Adam McKelvey. I had the privilege to be his pastor and friend over the last 15 plus years. Adam suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in his sleep this past Sunday morning at the age of 41.  Please be in prayer for his wife, Jackie and his two sons, Sam and Ben, also his parents, his brothers and countless other loved ones and friends. I will have much to say about my friend's life and legacy at his service today, but for now I believe his obituary summarizes his impactful life in a beautiful way from which I copied the following: “For all that didn't know Adam well, he was a loving husband and devoted father who always protected and provided for his family.  He was a committed Christian. He was raised Lutheran, faithfully attended Rainbow Forest Baptist Church and was a member of the Gideons. He read scripture every morning and read through the Bible several times in recent years. Adam was intelligent, driven and ambitious.  He was a member of the inaugural class of the Liberty University School of Law and a respected member of the Roanoke Bar.  He first worked as a prosecutor in Halifax County, Virginia and soon became an attorney at Crandall and Katt, where he remained employed until his passing.  He also found great joy in serving as legal counsel for the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS). Adam had a servant's heart sacrificially helping others without prompting and always looked for the good in people. He enjoyed using his spiritual gift of edification to encourage others and seemed to know what to say and do in times of doubt.  He was one of the most loyal, forgiving, trustworthy and sincere people that I have ever known.  He kept a mental short list of friends that he was “working on” and continually prayed for their salvation.  Greatly impacted by his Liberty High School football coach, Scott Abell, Adam loved coaching football and basketball.  He viewed sports as a ministry, developing kids not only as players, but also as people. During practices and games, he often tried to teach them life lessons and character traits that would serve them well once they became adults.  He never hid his faith and hoped to be a Christian influence in his players' lives. Adam often recalled that one of his biggest compliments came from a Roanoke City youth that told him on a car ride home from football practice that he had watched Adam interact with preachers, business leaders, strangers and folks in ankle bracelets and he treated every person with the same respect and consideration regardless of their status.  Adam said that's how it should be, because it's not our status in this world or what we accomplish on the field or on the court that makes each person valuable.  A person's value is rooted in the fact that they are made in God's image and we are precious in His sight.  Adam worked tirelessly for the good of others and often said his biggest problem is that there just aren't enough hours in a day to accomplish all that he wanted.  Adam was indeed a dear friend to me and was always more than willing to help me or help someone else in whatever way he could. I have countless stories of how he used his legal skills to assist others without asking for anything in return. When I needed to form Pastor Mike Impact Ministries as a 501-C3 with the IRS, Adam immediately volunteered to do all the legal and paperwork that goes with it and would not charge me a dime.

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Regular, on-time attendance is essential to students' education. Too many absences - excused or unexcused - can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. Did you know that missing just two days of school per month means a student loses 10% of their instruction for the school year? Learn more about the importance of attendance, download an attendance tracker, and see support strategies on our website. Of course, attendance does not take priority over your health! If you are too sick for school, please stay home and access your school work remotely until you are feeling better. Our featured event was our all staff kick-off on Tuesday, August 29th - our first in seven years! More than 2,000 HSD staff members converged on the Liberty High School gym for the kick-off where Superintendent Reiman used the metaphor of Leonardo DaVinci's cantilever bridge to demonstrate how staff are “planks in students' bridge” to success, and highlighted five former W.L. Henry Elementary School students who have gone on to do great things. The event was punctuated by student performances and inspiring messages of the power of our collective efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of each and every one of our students. Visit our website to see the video that closed out the presentation, highlighting words of appreciation from our 2023 graduates, and see pictures from the event.  The first day of school for students in grades 1-6, 7 and 9 is Tuesday, September 5th. Students in grades K, 8, and 10-12 will join them on Wednesday, September 6th. On every Wednesday, including September 6th, schools follow an “academic seminar” schedule. For students in elementary school, this means their school day ends 30 minutes earlier than normal; for students in middle and high school, this means their school day begins 30 minutes later than normal.  Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. On Thursday, May 25th we had the privilege of gathering and celebrating HSD's ninety-two Class of 2023 Valedictorians and Salutatorians at a luncheon event at Hidden Creek Community Center. Superintendent Mike Scott, Mayor Steve Callaway, Chamber President Deanna Palm, Hillsboro Schools Foundation Executive Director Aron Carleson, and School Board Chair Mark Watson were all on hand to congratulate our highest achievers and wish them well on their journey beyond high school.  Students' plans include attending colleges and universities in Oregon, across the U.S., and even abroad. Regardless of their next steps, they have all learned some valuable lessons along the way and took a moment to share their words of wisdom for incoming 9th graders. Check them out on our website. Way to go, Vals & Sals! You make us Proud to be HSD!  Our bond update is a recap of the CTE Sustainability Facilities open house at Liberty High School on Thursday, May 25th. The community had an opportunity to tour the school's sustainable agriculture/design building and solar array canopy, constructed via the 2017 Hillsboro School District Bond, and view the seniors' project presentations.  On Wednesday, May 24th we were pleased to honor fifty retiring staff members at the District Retirement Celebration, held at South Meadows Middle School. Collectively, our retirees have dedicated hundreds and hundreds of years to HSD students and we couldn't be more grateful for their service. Visit our website to learn more and see pictures from the event. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health refers to our emotional and social wellbeing and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. It plays a key role in connecting with others, making decisions, handling stress, and many other aspects of daily life.  Like physical health, mental health is a spectrum along which each of us is traveling. At times, things may arise that require additional attention and intervention to assist us in returning to the good-to-great end of the spectrum; and some may experience chronic issues that necessitate ongoing and regular care. In short, our mental health deserves just as much attention as our physical health.  Over the last several years, many have experienced the impact of isolation, stress, and uncertainty and the toll they can take on our wellbeing. HSD wants to be your partner in reducing the stigma of mental health challenges, and encourages everyone to seek the help and support they need to thrive. Visit our website for information about local resources, or connect with your school counselor to learn more about services and support available in our community.  On Saturday, June 3rd HSD will partner with the National Alliance of Mental Illness of Washington County to host a Parenting and Mental Health event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Orenco Elementary School. The event will feature stories of healing and coping, a panel discussion with local community professionals, presentations, and more.  Our featured staff member is Liberty High School social studies and economics teacher Amy Fifth-Lince for winning Oregon's 2023 Financial Empowerment Educator of the Year Award! State Treasurer Tobias Read visited Amy's classroom on Wednesday, May 10th to congratulate her in person and talk to her class about his role in state government. For winning the award, Amy will receive $1,500 and Liberty will receive $500. In addition, Liberty students selected at random will receive a share of $500 in scholarships from the Oregon College Savings Plan.  Our bond update is on the progress at Tamarack Elementary School. June 30th is coming soon, and that's the expected date of substantial completion for Tamarack. There will be some external site work for the playground areas and landscaping, but the campus will be ready for the August 23rd grand opening – we hope to see you there! Stay updated at hillsboro-bond.org. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Safety remains our top priority in Peoria Unified. In seeing an increase in rumors of social media threats this school year, Peoria Unified launched a safety campaign this spring called See Something, Hear Something, Say Something, Do Something. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage students to come forward and tell a trusted adult if they see or hear something that does not seem right, and to not forward potential threats but to report it so that they may be properly investigated.   Today, we are joined by School Resource Office (SRO) Lisa Hale who serves Liberty High School. She shares more information about the role of an SRO, as well as, how we all play a role in school safety.    If you, or someone you know, needs to report a school safety issue, you can do so by calling our Safe School Line anonymously at 623-486-6199.  If a student needs additional support, they can call our Student Support Line at 623-412-5262 or the Teen Lifeline at 602-248-8336. You can learn more about the safety measures we have in place at peoriaunified.org/safety.
