In schools today, it can feel like there's always something new being introduced. A new initiative, a new priority, a new expectation. And for many teachers, especially in math classrooms, it raises a familiar question: why this, and why now? After years of seeing initiatives come and go, it's easy to feel skeptical about whether the next one will actually make a lasting impact. But what if the issue isn't the initiative itself—but the number of initiatives being introduced at once? When time, energy, and resources stay the same (or even decrease), every new priority competes for attention. And over time, that leads to what's known as initiative fatigue. Without clear communication, shared decision-making, and visible evidence of impact, it becomes harder for teachers to invest in new work. The challenge isn't just choosing the right initiative—it's knowing what to prioritize, what to let go of, and how to create the conditions for meaningful change. In this episode, you'll explore:What initiative fatigue is and why it happens in schoolsHow competing priorities impact teachers' time and energyWhy transparency and teacher involvement matter in decision-making in mathematicsHow to determine when it's the right time to move on from a math initiativeThe importance of identifying clear success indicators in mathematicsWhat teachers and math leaders can do to better manage competing demandsIf you're feeling overwhelmed by constant change—or trying to lead improvement without overloading your team—this episode will help you think more strategically about priorities, capacity, and sustainable progress. Not sure what matters most when designing math improvement plans? Most schools say they “collaborate.” They hold team meetings. They talk about students. They review data. But without clear infrastructure, those meetings become updates instead of decision-making engines, and multi-tiered systems of support become an extra burden for educators. In this episode, I interview Kurtis Hewson from Jigsaw Learning to break down their Collaborative Response Team meeting format and explain why effective collaboration requires structure and not just good intentions. From who is in the room to how documents are used before, during, and after the meeting, they share the operational backbone that makes collaboration actually move student outcomes.Kurtis Hewson is an award-winning former administrator and teacher, as well as post-secondary teaching faculty. He is the co-founder of Jigsaw Learning and co-author of Collaborative Response: Three Foundational Components That Transform How We Respond to the Needs of Learners (Corwin, 2022). Kurtis works with districts and schools nationally and internationally to establish Collaborative Response frameworks and interacts with thousands of educators each year.If you care about MTSS, intervention systems, or building-level leadership, this episode will shift how you think about team meetings and collaboration. In this interview, we discuss: ✅ Why the Collaborative Team Meeting framework helps educators move from between “talking about students” to making strategic, forward progress that changes school-wide practice✅ How structured documents before, during, and after meetings create clarity and accountability and psychological safety✅ How to capture action items in real time and encourage innovative thinking✅ Why the Collaborative Team Meeting requires specific roles, and how these roles  determine whether a meeting moves forward or feels like busyworkIf you're leading multi-tiered supports in K–12 education or trying to strengthen how your teams collaborate, this episode offers practical insight into building the infrastructure that makes collaboration sustainable, focused, and impactful. You can learn more about the Collaborative Response Framework free resources here: https://www.jigsawlearning.ca/freeRead about the Overview of Collaborative Response here: https://bit.ly/CR-overview Read the Introductory Chapter of the text Collaborative Response – https://bit.ly/CR-introGet the Collaborative Team Meeting Starter Kit here: https://www.jigsawlearningonline.com/ctm-starter-kit-podcastLearn about the Layers of Collaborative Teams Here: https://www.jigsawlearning.ca/publications/blog-posts/scaffolding-our-collaborative-response-purposeful-layering-tLearn the Five Considerations to Transform Your Team Meetings here:  https://www.jigsawlearningonline.com/five-planning-considerations-to-transform-your-team-meetingsIn this episode, I mentioned Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that gives speech pathologists a scalable framework for building language skills needed to thrive in school, social situations, and daily life. Today our guest is Brenda Ortiz McGrath, district administrator, school committee member, author, and founder of the family engagement platform CoreKind360. We discuss why student support and character development must move from being an occasional initiative to becoming part of a school's foundation. Brenda shares how schools can embed life skills, relationship-building, and proactive student supports into daily instruction, leadership practices, and school culture. She also explains why strong district leadership, clear messaging, and community partnerships are essential for building systems that strengthen connection, improve school culture, and support student success. In this conversation, Brenda offers important reminders for educators and leaders working to build stronger school communities: Connection before correction builds trust and helps educators better understand the reason behind student behavior. Life skills and character development should be embedded into daily instruction and school culture, not isolated in a single period or program. District leadership and clear strategic planning are essential for making student support systems a true priority across schools. Schools must design systems that prevent disconnection, not just respond to problems after they occur. Learn More About CharacterStrong:  Access FREE MTSS Curriculum Samples Request a Quote Today! Today on Around the School Table (xuno.com.au/podcasts), host Steve Davis is joined by James Thomas, Managing Director of Digital Education Partnerships Indonesia (DEPI) (depi.co.id). DEPI helps international edtech companies build trust and traction across Indonesia’s vast school landscape. It’s a market shaped by scale, complexity, and relationships. Early in the conversation, James breaks down what makes Indonesia unique. There are tens of millions of students and hundreds of thousands of schools. However, size is only one factor. Just as important is how schools communicate, buy, and implement systems. Next, the episode digs into a common assumption about “international schools”. Many people expect mature operations. Yet the reality can be mixed. James shares research across SPK schools (SPK stands for Satuan Pendidikan Kerja Sama, which translates to “Cooperative Education Unit.” These are Indonesian private schools officially licensed to deliver an international curriculum). While many use an LMS for learning, fewer rely on a dedicated school management system. As a result, critical workflows can remain manual. Importantly, James clarifies the difference between an LMS, an SMS, and an SIS layer. An LMS supports teaching and learning workflows. Meanwhile, an SMS runs operations like attendance, wellbeing, parent communication, events, and payments. Then, an SIS layer can connect systems without forcing a full replacement. Consequently, schools can reduce fragmentation and improve workflow reliability. Finance and payments emerge as a major pressure point. Schools often manage complex fee logic in spreadsheets. Unfortunately, one small change can trigger errors. In addition, many schools still depend on WhatsApp for parent communication. Because messages arrive constantly, teacher wellbeing can be impacted. The episode also explores safeguarding and reporting. James explains Indonesia’s TPPK mandate (TPPK stands for Tim Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan, which translates to Team for the Prevention and Handling of Violence) and why structured incident recording matters. Moreover, he shares why many rollouts fail. They’re treated as IT installs, not organisational change. Instead, James recommends phased implementation, clear ownership, and realistic priorities. If you’re a school leader reviewing systems, this episode offers a practical playbook. You’ll hear how to identify operational headaches, reduce risk, and build resilient school operations. My guest today, Sarah Oresnik, is a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at McMaster University. Their research interests centre around food insecurity and its impact on our health and wellbeing. Within their PhD, their focus is on how youth navigate food insecurity, looking at youth experiences in Southampton, UK. Sarah grew up in the kitchen learning recipes from their parents and grandparents, which has translated to their continued investigations and reflections on their own food environment.   In our conversation, Sarah shares about their current research working with teens in the UK to explore the merits and challenges of their school nutrition programs. They highlight the limitations of daily food allowances and electronic payment options, the impacts that food insecurity and cultural experiences have on shaping food preferences and values, and does a brilliant deep dive challenge the very idea of what "cultural foods" can be for teens in diasporic communities. This week we're joined by Julia Fallon, Executive Director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) and she shines a light on the appeal of school systems to cyber attackers. (HINT: it is access to PII to open credit cards, mortgages and more in the name of children that often is only detected many years later.) We also discuss the connection between schools and insurance companies, trends in how school systems are fortifying their security measures, the evolution of infosec to become a front office issue, and what schools can do to integrate cybersecurity into curriculums to both bolster security and lay a pathway for future cyber professionals.   Julia Fallon is the Executive Director of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), where she works with U.S. state and territorial digital learning leaders to empower the education community to leverage technology for learning, teaching, and school operations. Involved with learning technologies since 1989, her professional interest lies in making the case for public school systems wherein educators are able to optimize technology-rich learning environments to equitably engage the learners who fill their classrooms. We'll have a full season of 3Ps in a Pod starting soon. In the meantime, here's a special episode of 3Ps in a Pod with Ken Shelton, an expert on artificial intelligence (AI) in education and author of The Promises and Perils of AI in Education: Ethics and Equity Have Entered the Chat. Marlys Weaver of the Arizona K12 Center and Dr. LeeAnn Lindsey of the Arizona Institute for Education and the Economy, co-host this episode. Dr. Lindsey also co-hosted the four-part AI in Education podcast series last spring and was part of the team that created the guide Generative Artificial Intelligence in K-12 Education: Guidance for Arizona Schools and School Systems. Ken has worked in education for more than 20 years and holds a Master of Arts in education with a specialization in educational technology as well as new media design and production. Generative AI, he explains, does have both benefits and significant challenges. He explores several of the issues with AI. Many of these grow out of AI being built by humans, who bring their own perspectives and biases. This not only can include AI programs being built by teams with a lack of diversity in general but also education AI programs being build by teams that include few or no classroom practitioners. For educators to use generative AI programs responsibly to support students, those programs must be designed for our learners' reality. When people use AI without understanding the biases that can come with a particular program, that AI tool can cause more harm than good, Ken explains. He shares newsworthy examples of chatbots that have shared incorrect and troublesome information with students. This leads into a conversation about how educators select AI tools. Often, educators may select AI tools because students may seem more engaged with technology, but Ken offers several questions educators can use when deciding when and how to use AI. These include asking why you're using a tool or program in a particular way, “What is the learning, experiential or educational goal or purpose of using an AI tool?” and “What problem does this solve that you can't address with other available resources?” Ken and Dr. Lindsey also discuss how “performatively engaging” technology can be for students. Ken recommends that educators do not confuse activity with engagement. AI tools can appear “fun,” as Dr. Lindsey notes, but to be used responsibly and effectively, Ken states that educators must frame AI use around educational goals and the experiences educators want students to have to reach those goals.  Ken closes the episode talking about the things that AI can do better than humans and what humans will always be able to do better than AI. He then shares the positives that can come from AI use in schools.  At an upcoming series on AI in Education, Ken Shelton will work with teachers in going beyond the tips and tricks of AI use and building an ethical approach that serves all students. He served during the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 with us, because his students were going and he wanted to be apart of what they were doing. That is waaaaay over the required work of a teacher! We slept on the floor of a church and served in harsh conditions during an impossible situation. In this episode, Jim shares he and his wife's experience during our missions trip to South Florida to assist the people of that area that were affected by this natural disaster. He is one of those teachers I loved to be around. I had the privilege of sitting in his classroom on many occasions and was captivated each and every time. Jim is also an avid world traveler... the long time Geography educator and visionary living and experiencing what he teaches on! We also dive into his many world travels and experiences that fueled his passion for the educational teaching path he chose. This afternoon, Joe and David started a conversation about our education system and how it has been undermined by a leftist agenda. The pair first examined how Chicago public schools are being directed to pass migrant students, even if they have failed. They also pointed out a case in which parents are suing their school district because students were roomed with the opposite sex, with the transgender agenda taking precedence over children's safety and comfort. After a short break, Joe and David welcomed guest Shaun Porter to the show. Shaun Porter is a 45-year-old Western Maryland native with two sons—one is a professional firefighter, and the other is a 5-year-old deaf child. Porter has been active in civil rights matters since 1995 and currently shares his First Amendment activism on YouTube and TikTok, where he has garnered over 1 billion views since 2020. Porter is currently laser-focused on political and school board corruption in Washington County, Maryland. Together, the three discussed how Shaun confronted his school board after they allowed his deaf son to be bullied and abused by classmates. Following Shaun's departure, Joe and David turned their attention to the second would-be assassin and how the DOJ recklessly released his letter, which called for a $150,000 bounty to be placed on Trump, before closing in prayer.

The Importance of Passion, Creativity and Freedom with Jason Gardiner In this lively episode of The Wellness Way podcast, Philly chats with Jason Gardiner about all manner of topics, including: - Jason's early years, growing up and having a traumatic time being "different" and being raised in a non-loving and unstable environment. - How Jason discovered dance through gymnastics and then ballet, which became his way of expressing creativity through something he was passionate about and extremely good at. - The realisation that School Systems crush creativity and that every child has different needs and ways of learning. - How Jason moved to London 30 years ago and faced challenges with a very different environment, especially the weather! Jason explains how he dealt with these challenges by embracing his abilities as a dancer and developing inner confidence. - The importance of finding your passion in life and how goals and ambition can help you deal with anything. - How the years of trauma led to issues with OCD which is a form of self-harm, and how therapy and awareness helped to deal with it. - The theatrics of the "pandemic", and how the Government's words, language and policies surrounding a "public health emergency" caused so much harm. - How Jason lost everything when the censorship was ramped up and he lost his company and all of its assets to the Government. - The importance of fighting for our freedoms and speaking the truth. Don't miss this enthralling conversation between Jason and Philly, full of passion and humour as they discuss everything from early years trauma to the future of healthy living. Evelyn Hemphill is also known as Evelyn the Advocate. She is an activist and her voice is expressed through various platforms and partnerships to RAISE AWARENESS about domestic violence and support its victims.     Evelyn's voice is being heard through articles in online news and podcasts that fall under the category of awareness and education. By writing articles and producing podcasts, she aims to educate the public about the dynamics of domestic violence and provide resources for survivors.    Discussing how it is impossible to get justice in the family court system, Evelyn touched on her case. She also explained the transfer of wealth as she had to pay her abuser via extortion through the system: child support, attorneys and other individuals that were not working in her best interest regarding her child.     School systems also play a part and that was explained in detail. Recently Evelyn's application for resolution of dispute of fees has been barred because three years has passed. Evelyn is a Pro Se litigant and did not know about the Rule. Now there is no way to recover monies she was robbed of in family court.    Everyone needs to speak out  as we can no longer accept the behaviors from the family court system. To Reach Evelyn Hemphill: Facebook: Evelyn Hemphill  and  Evelyn the Advocate, LLC mailto:etadvocatellc@gmail.com    *DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk.
