Box of sexy lingerie got murderer-dentist caught

So, what's the real story of Richard Brumfield? Even today, it's a remarkably unsatisfying account. There's plenty of evidence that Brumfield committed the murder — but there's also a bunch of evidence that makes no sense at all in that context. Why would a murderer mail a box of sexy panties to the exact place he planned to run away to, the day before an apparently premeditated crime? Was “Mrs. Norman Whitney” a real person, and if so, who was she? Did Brumfield have a second family in Calgary? Then, too, why would a man who's contemplating a murder like this use such a small amount of dynamite? Why would he stage the entire pageant on Pacific Highway, the most heavily traveled road in the area? Was there a second man involved in the plot, as the district attorney broadly hinted to reporters? Why was his wife so doggedly insistent that the burned corpse was that of her husband, when it was so obvious to everyone else that it was not? Was she in on it? And those suicide attempts: How many people, crazy or not, can cut two inches into their own throats with a dull instrument? How many can hang themselves from a bunk bed without help? If he had help, who could have provided it? It's possible that all these anomalies can be explained by Brumfield simply being an unhinged homicidal maniac, and yeah, maybe that's all there was to it. But looking back over the record at all the loose ends hanging off this messy little murder mystery, a person sure has to wonder. On a warm summer's evening in 1921, Dr. Richard Brumfield loaded about a dozen sticks of dynamite into his snazzy red convertible and left Roseburg, headed for handyman Dennis Russell's tiny shack in the hills near Dillard. Dr. Brumfield had hired Russell to blast out some stumps from around a rural farm property he owned. At least, that's what he'd told Russell when he hired him. But, as it turned out, he was lying about that. What Brumfield really wanted to hire Russell for was to impersonate a corpse. His corpse.... Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. We are in the Gospel of Mark. Visit the website and purchase the Scripture Journal for this study so that you can follow along with us. I am giving a shout-out today to Rock Woods from Roseburg, OR. Thank you for being a monthly partner in Project23 and helping us share the Gospel with millions as we work our way through the entire Bible. Today, we're looking at Mark 2:15-17: And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” — Mark 2:15-17 Jesus didn't come for the perfect. He came for the broken. While the religious elite judged from a distance, Jesus pulled up a chair—shared a meal with people everyone else wrote off. He didn't dodge messy lives. He walked straight into them. When the Pharisees complained, Jesus shut it down with one bold line: “Those who are well don't need a physician—only the sick do. I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners.” He wasn't excusing a sinner's sin. He was calling them out of it. But first, he met them where they were—over a table, in real conversation, starting with grace and leading to a challenge. Jesus' table was—and still is—a place of invitation and transformation. And it's wide open for you. Will you come to the table and eat? And if you know Jesus, act like him. Carefully consider with whom you are meeting with and eating with today. Who needs to see Jesus' love through the way you live and love? #graceatthetable, #dailydevotional, #callofsinners ASK THIS: Who in your life feels unwelcome at your table? When have you judged rather than joined someone in their struggle? How can you extend grace before pointing out faults today? What's one small way you can meet someone “where they are”? DO THIS: Invite someone you'd normally avoid to lunch or coffee this week and offer them compassion and direction, not only correction. PRAY THIS: Lord Jesus, thank you for meeting me in my mess and offering to heal before I ever had it together. Give me the courage to pull up a chair for others and love them with your grace. Amen PLAY THIS: Come As You Are.

On October 1st, 2015, tragedy struck the quiet town of Roseburg, Oregon, home to the Umpqua Community College campus. When 26-year-old Christopher Sean Harper Mercer opened fire, it became the scene of Oregon's deadliest shooting. He fired erratically on both students and staff, senselessly killing nine people, wounding several, and leaving countless others with unimaginable trauma. Investigators would slowly uncover the story of the man behind the violence and what led him down such a deadly and destructive path. Much of his time was spent, either isolated, or in the darkest corners of the internet. That's where his penchant for violent, hateful ideologies seemingly began. In this episode, we peel back the layers of a deeply disturbing story—exploring Harper Mercer's childhood, his struggles with mental health, his obsession with guns, and his dogmatic descent into incel and racist philosophies. As we remember the victims, this case serves as a grim reminder of America's ongoing mass shooting crisis. While this story undeniably centers around violence and loss, it's also a story of resilience and humanity even amidst horror and in the face of tragedy. We also honor the incredible bravery of survivors, including Chris Mintz, a U.S. Army veteran and student who risked his life to save others during the attack. This is the story of survival, heroism, and tragedy in Snyder Hall.Honoring the Lives Lost: Lawrence Levine, Lucero Alcaraz, Quinn Glen Cooper, Lucas Eibel, Jason Dale Johnson, Treven Taylor Anspach, Rebecka Ann Carnes, Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, Sarena Dawn MooreVisit our website! Our new book... STORY QUESTIONS: How To Unlock Your Story One Question At A Time https://payhip.com/b/ZTvq9 Adam is a Jewish-American born in Abington, Pennsylvania who grew up in Bucks County, PA. At age twelve his family relocated to Roseburg, Oregon; a new and unfamiliar small town. As the middle child of three, Adam realized he had to stand out to gain any measure of attention, if he wanted his rightful place at the dinner table. His antics started purely as a way to amuse his family, but quickly blossomed into a desire to entertain a bigger audience. This desire, however, was abated by a nearly crippling case of stage fright that lasted until he joined his high school's drama program as a teenager. Through his teacher and classmates' encouragement, Adam gradually let go and confronted his fear. It seemed to work. After receiving much local acclaim in his first year on stage, his high school named the A-Ward Award after him and it is still given annually to the most outstanding newcomer. It was because of this success Ward pursued his love of film as an undergrad at Hawaii Pacific University where he graduated with a Communications Degree. After graduating from college, Ward made his way to Hollywood! During his first day in town, he used his charm to land a position in post production at Dreamworks. From there, he segued to a gig working for Todd Phillips at Warner Brothers. But pursuing a career made him temporarily lose sight of his dream (dream of what?) It wasn't until Ward bumped into Jimmy Smits at LAX that he was convinced to go back and study acting again. At Smits' recommendation, he began studying at the Joanne Baron DW School of Acting during which he found time to star in eleven short films. The following year ward was a lead in three independent features. But it wasn't until the year 2011 Ward, took his destiny in his own hands and wrote, directed and starred in a tv comedy called, "Three Guys and a Couch" (On Amazon Prime). In 2013 wrote Directed and Starred in "Parole Officers" another tv pilot. (On Amazon Prime). Later in 2014 Ward co-wrote a feature film called, "Wally Got Wasted". Research has shown volunteering improves physical and mental health, provides a sense of purpose, and nurtures new and existing relationships. And it can also get someone involved in a faith community—especially at this time of year. That's what happened for Captain Edith Dye-Mabie, who first met The Salvation Army when her husband was a participant in the Adult Rehabilitation Center program. With her children, she got connected to the nearby Salvation Army corps or church and when they asked for volunteers at Christmastime, she showed up. The rest, as they say, is history—though quite a bit happened along the way. Today, Captain Dye-Mabie and her husband are corps officers or pastors of The Salvation Army in Roseburg, Oregon, now working to get others involved with those personal invitations that make all the difference. Hunting and fishing as a group activity might not be everyone's first thought as a place to start, but for many people, especially the growing numbers of women who are participating in hunting and fishing, Facebook groups, meetup apps and community education events have offered an opportunity to do something that can be challenging to learn on your own. For this podcast episode, we talked to Hailey Malone and Claire Grubb, two friends and outdoor enthusiasts from Roseburg, Oregon, who found each other through social media groups and who inspired others around them to get into hunting, fishing, hiking and conservation volunteer opportunities through group activities.    Show Notes:  While the Mardy Hunters group mentioned in this podcast episode isn't currently active, there are a number of ways to connect with other people to learn hunting and fishing skills.  ODFW Workshops and Events Hunters of Color LGBT+ Outdoors Hunting and Fishing Meetup.com

Permit violations during the August 2023 repairs of the Winchester Dam on the North Umpqua River near Roseburg, resulted in the biggest fish kill on an Oregon River this year. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fined the dam's owners and their contractors $27.6 million dollars for the needless death of hundreds of thousands on native fish. The Winchester Dam was condemned in 1976. The Oregon Water Resource District gave the dam their highest danger rating, “high hazard,” meaning: “the department expects loss of human life to occur if the dam fails.” Mike Ruehle and Adam Miller of Community Rights Douglas County chronicle the history of the Winchester Dam. They describe the ongoing pattern of violations of both permit and law that culminated in the massive fish kill and unprecedented monetary penalty, how it could have easily been prevented, and what can be done to remove the Winchester Dam so this never happens again. The Winchester Water Control District, owners of the derelict and condemned Winchester Dam, have perpetrated a litany of documented violations including: • Illegal water storage in excess of their water rights. • Pollution of the North Umpqua River. • Privatization of publics lands and waterways. • Killing of millions of threatened and sensitive aquatic species. • Repeated failure to comply with state and federal laws and regulations.  • The use of toxic and carcinogenic building materials that leach copper, arsenic, and chromium 50 feet upstream of the intake to the public drinking water source for 37,700 residents – one third of the residents of Douglas County, Oregon. The Begum's Fortune by Jules Verne audiobook. A novel with some utopian elements, but primarily dystopian. A French doctor and a German professor both inherit a vast fortune as descendants of a French soldier who married the rich widow of an Indian prince. They both decide to go to America and establish their own 'ideal' society. Dr. Sarrasin, the French doctor, is focused on maintaining public health. He builds Ville-France. Professor Schultze, the German scientist, is a bit of a militarist and racist. He builds Stahlstadt and devotes his city to the production of ever more powerful weapons so that he can destroy Sarrasin's city. They manage to get the US to cede sovereignty to two cities so that the two newly rich men can create their utopia. The setting for Ville-France would place it on the Oregon Coast, near Bandon, Oregon. The location for the second city, Stahlstadt, is less clear, but the description would place it somewhere near Roseburg, Oregon Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
