Chuck and Brad do it all so straight ChuckandBradPodcast.com: Chuck Staton and Brad Rohrer are comedians, writers, and filmmakers in Providence, Rhode Island. Providence (and Rhode Island in general) often plays a big part in their podcast. It's provided a home for their creative interests and outlets. Chuck is a food, arts and culture writer for Providence Monthly and Motif Magazine. Chuck is also the lead singer of punk band Senior Discount (Paper + Plastick Records). Chuck is an independent filmmaker who mainly works for Tell 'Em Steve Dave, a podcast made up members of AMC's Comic Book Men and TruTV's Impractical Jokers. Brad Rohrer has been doing improv comedy for a million years, currently at the Providence Improv Guild. Chuck and Brad do stand-up comedy and live comedy shows together at comedy clubs. Through the podcast, Chuck and Brad often moderate panels at pop culture conventions (and otherwise host live events) such as Big Apple Con, ComiConn, RI Comic Con and RI Food Fights' events.------------------------------------------- Chuck and Brad have interviewed countless artists, including the bands Bowling for Soup, Less Than Jake, and Reel Big Fish, as well as Jeff Tremaine (director of the Jackass movies), Casey Jost (Impractical Jokers) and many other other comedians, musicians and creatives.
We won an award from RI Monthly! We didn't win the award from Motif Magazine (but Providence Improv Guild, a good theater, did, and they don't have doll heads in their basement, no matter what Jarrod tells you). And Jay Leno--JAY LENO--visited our theater one night. But we mostly talk about what vegetables are disgusting. At about 24:00 Conor and Karl walk in and ruin everything. We discuss a character Karl probably shouldn't have done, but on the positive side he had a really good poop earlier today. Jarrod's dog Gracie is @graciehoudini on Instagram. The Bit Players perform every Friday and Saturday at 8pm at the Firehouse Theater in Newport, RI. Visit www.bitplayers.net for tickets. The opening and closing music is by Dorisduke, the band that is 3/4 Bit Players and Bit Player alumni.
It's our exposé ep! D'Ant and I are joined at long last by power couple #BowlBag, comprised of PIG heavy-hitters Melissa Bowler and Jim Bagley! In this episode I talk with Justin Wilder about the importance of being a lifetime learner of improv and why he thinks that even veteran improvisers can improve their game by revisiting the improv basics. You might know Justin from his starring role in the trailer of everybody’s favorite Andy Samberg movie Celeste and Jesse Forever, or from his titular role in the yet unannounced but totally (absolutely, definitely) happening Wes Anderson movie, The Omniscient Owl. Or maybe you know him as the un-sung, un-credited, and off-screen hero of literally every Judd Apatow movie – after all, as you will learn in this awesome interview, not only is Justin Judd’s personal improv teacher and guru, but dare I say, his muse. Justin teaches improv at the Providence Improv Guild, as well as at Rhode Island’s newest improv comedy theater Wage House. He is a longtime member of Up in the Attic, which has performed at the Del Close Marathon, and he is also a member of Jackpot!, the Providence Improv Guild’s new Saturday night house team. They’re fantastic and obviously you can check them out every Saturday night at the aforementioned Providence Improv Guild (see improvpig.com for more details). I had a ton of fun doing this interview, as I’m sure you’ll be able to tell. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and review us wherever you listen to podcasts.
In this episode I talk with Mike Amaral of the Providence Improv Guild. We talk a lot about position play, which is the idea that there are four basic scene types (straight/absurd, character, realistic, alternate reality) each with its own broad game construct, and that if you know what type of scene you're in, then it makes it easier to play. Here are my notes on position play! https://www.dropbox.com/s/kvdvw4b6cygzhmh/Position%20Play%20and%20the%20Deconstruction.pdf?dl=0

On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Melissa Bowler, who is the Executive Director of a non-profit organization called P.I.G., aka the Providence Improv Guild. P.I.G. is an organization dedicated to building a community of improvisers and providing affordable improv workshops to a wide audience. During this episode, we cover how entrepreneurs, business leaders, speakers, and podcasters can use improv training to better themselves and communication. Main Questions Asked: What is the definition of improv? How can people use improv into their business? How can business owners with a virtual team engage you in improv training? Key Lessons Learned: What is Improvisation? Improv (improvisation) is the art of making things up on the spot. Live improv shows are essentially sketch comedy that is written, directed, staged, and executed in the moment based on audience suggestions. When it comes to improv, there is a beauty in not knowing what is going to happen. When you do improv, you go on stage completely blank and let things happen. The human ability to improvise is innate and is something we knew how to do at one point in our lives. Improvisation is about uncovering the idea of play that is in all of us. Podcasters and Improv Some questions don't apply to all guests. You have to go where if feels right to go and not just on the run sheet. Podcasting allows you to do improv during the recording but edit things out. Improv & Business Communication Hire an expert to teach a class. The most effective is in-person. Take a class and pass on what you learn. Incorporate the spirit into your work. Having a sense of humor and the ability to connect with others gets you so much further in life than knowing all the intricate business rules. The business climate and world is changing, which allows for a connection on a more human level. ‘Yes, and…' The key rule of improv is to never say ‘no.' You always have to accept an offer and use the ‘Yes, and…' approach. This means accepting and building. ‘Yes, and…' allows you to discover a lot of bad ideas and explore them. Focus on what you want to do with ‘Yes, and….' In every bad idea there is a grain of a good idea within it. You have to say, ‘Yes, and…' to get to the good idea.
