Episode 030: December 7, 2024 Sara Breslin joins me and we talk about how to make your merchandise. What do you choose? How do you make it? Which vendors do you choose? Who is your audience? How do you reach them? Everything we can think of and PLEASE ask questions. :) About Sara Breslin: Sara Breslin has made a name for herself as a Symbolist Figure Artist with colorful, feminine work informed by the late 19th-century Art Nouveau style and the early 20th-century Surrealism movement. She obtained her BFA in 2014 from the University of Rhode Island, having majored in Fine Arts, and has continued her studio practice in Rhode Island ever since. Breslin's watercolor and mixed media paintings meld reality and fantasy to create empowering images of the Divine Feminine. These images employ strong narrative concepts, incorporating elements from nature, ancient symbols, and dynamic colors to breathe life into her mesmerizing figures. Through her work, Breslin explores the power of womxn and femininity while delving into the complexity of human emotions. Her own experiences deeply inform Breslin's work, and she uses her paintings to express and affirm her own gender identity and mental health. With representation in local galleries and retail locations, Breslin's art has become a unique addition to the community. She regularly shows work in exhibitions and art fairs and frequently collaborates with nonprofits Beyond the Diagnosis and Art for Eyes. Most notably, in 2023 Breslin presented an ambitious solo exhibition, Sonder at AS220 in Providence, RI. Jeffrey Yoo Warren, is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and crafter whose work explores themes of cultural heritage, identity, and community. Jeffrey shares his unique journey from studying architecture to finding his calling in artistic practices deeply rooted in historical research and traditional craftsmanship.Through his residency at the Library of Congress, Jeffrey talks about the reconstruction of early Asian American communities and neighbourhoods, creating immersive virtual and physical models that invite viewers to experience and connect with these often-overlooked histories. He also shares his passion for woodworking, papermaking, and learning traditional Korean crafts, allowing him to forge a tangible link with his ancestral roots and cultural inheritance.Highlights:Embracing the personal and specific aspects of one's identity and cultural background can lead to a deeper, more meaningful artistic practice, challenging the concept of universality as a design goal.Finding joy and fulfilment in the creative process is essential, and recognizing when work no longer aligns with one's passions is a valuable lesson.Collaboration and building community connections, especially within diasporic or underrepresented groups, can foster a profound sense of belonging and inspire new ideas.Trusting one's instincts and exploring seemingly tangential interests can uncover unexpected paths to self-discovery and artistic expression.Preserving and reviving traditional crafts and practices can serve as a powerful means of reconnecting with cultural heritage and transmitting ancestral knowledge.Guest Bio:Jeffrey Yoo Warren (he/him) is a Korean American artist educator, illustrator, community scientist and researcher in Providence, RI, whose recent work combines ancestral craft practices and creative work with diasporic memory through virtual collaborative worldbuilding. He has spent years creating collaborative community science projects which decenter dominant culture in environmental knowledge production. Jeff is an educator with Movement Education Outdoors and AS220, and part of the New Old art collective with Aisha Jandosova, hosting art-making and storytelling events with older adults; he is also the 2023 Innovator in Residence at the Library of Congress for my ongoing project Seeing Lost Enclaves: Relational reconstructions of erased historic neighborhoods of color. His current artistic practice investigates how people build identity and strength through their interactions with artifacts and histories, and the ways that objects can tell stories that people can be part of in the present. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
A very special episode! Today we are chatting with Xander Marro, co-founder of the Dirt Palace, "a feminist cupcake encrusted netherworld located along the dioxin filled banks of the Woonasquatucket river, which is to say in Providence, RI USA". The Dirt Palace is a feminist artist-run collective/residency program/space that has been a pivotal part of the artistic community in Providence for over 20 years, and this interview is the first in a three part series focused on the Dirt Palace and its two co-founders: Xander Marro and Pippi Zornoza. This series was made in collaboration with Voices in Contemporary Art (VoCA), and was recorded in December 2022 in Xander's studio. In a first for the pod, you can *watch* the interview, including clips of Xander's work here: https://vimeo.com/889901548In the interview, we discuss Xander's creative origins, explorations in puppetry, animation, printmaking, film, live performance, and community arts organizing. We don't normally share guest-written bios, but Xander's is a work of art in its own right, so we simply must: "Xander Marro has been living the good life in the feminist sub-underground for too many years to count on her long bony fingers. She draws pictures (usually narrative), makes movies (usually not narrative), produces plays with elaborate sets and costumes (usually narrative, but confusing), and then makes stuff like posters, quilts and dioramas (probably narrative?). Her work is often about spiritual relationships to the material stuff of this world. Co-founder of the Dirt Palace in 2000 (feminist cupcake encrusted netherworld located along the dioxin filled banks of the Woonasquatucket river, which is to say in Providence, RI USA). Her studio (and heart) is there still. Xander currently serves as co-director of Dirt Palace Public Projects. She cut her teeth in community arts management serving as the Managing Director of Providence's legendary AS220. She teaches a class on poster design at RISD and serves as The Board Chair of One Neighborhood Builders, a community development/affordable housing organization."Stay tuned for our conversation with Pippi, and the final episode in the series where we sit down with both artists to discuss their decades long collaboration. “Kiss Off, Kiss Off” The Virginia -born Erin McKeown is best categorized as un-categorizable.Whether she's playing guitar with the Mountain Goats, tearing through big band music in a tailored suit or writing an off-Broadway musical, McKeown pretty much does it all. A graduate of Brown, McKeown, over the course of her over 20 year career, has put out almost 15 solo albums, toured with Andrew Bird, Thea Gilmore, Josh Ritter and the Indigo Girls, played Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, had her music appear in commercials and TV shows, was a resident artist at Providence, RI's revolutionary community arts organization AS220 and she was the 2011-2012 fellow at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center For Internet & Society. Yes, she's busy. The recipient of a 2016 writing fellowship from The Studios of Key West and a 2018 residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. McKeown is currently a 2020-21 Professor of the Practice at Brown University. Her new album KISS OFF KISS OFF is a raw blast of nervy rock and roll that's got street smart grooves and real poetic grit. It's fast and catchy and it swerves with all the lippy snarl of early Joan Jett. In this chat, McKewon talks to Alex about sports, creativity, self-preservation and why she won't answer emails after 6pm. www.erinmckeown.com www.bombshellradion.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Louise Kennelly settled in Maryland after adventures around the country and abroad, and has been in her position at Frederick Arts Council for three and a half years. She notes that interest in contemporary art has really taken off in Frederick during this time. She talks about working through the bureaucracies of art in public spaces, compromising and having a plan B. The Sky Stage that was created with the artist Heather Theresa Clark is an example that persistence pays off. It hosts 150 events every season, where the community decides what they want and the arts council facilitates access to the space. Seed money from local family foundations came with the promise of more financial support if the community showed that they were committed to this project, and it turned out to be a huge success. We should trust artists to imagine and create something unprecedented. The question remains: Does the community want and need contemporary art? And how do you build an audience? Personal connections to artists and the theme or narrative of the work that is relevant to the local community organically draw people in to see the work and develop a sense of what contemporary art can be. “The local community is picking up the slack which the national culture is not satisfying,” says Louise, emphasizing intimacy, authenticity, kindness, empathy, and communication as valuable aspects of the work. It addresses the basic need for connection, collaboration, and experimentation, which seems to be lacking in the broader culture. It is important to give people the benefit of the doubt, allowing for complex interactions and relationships to exist. It's easier to put your differences aside in a smaller community and to have a real conversation. There is an openness to risk-taking. Louise thinks that there is a renaissance at the local level of arts initiatives, because people feel the need for getting together in the same room, sharing the same physical space, something there is less and less of in our daily lives where most interactions are mediated by a screen. She says: “If you put aside your preconceptions about what people can or cannot handle with contemporary art, you'd be surprised.” The next step is to think about what it would look like for young artists to be able to live and work locally? Making it sustainable for individual artists, who should have a commercial lens and get more creative with the business side of things. There is a need for a community arts center where artists can all get together, and more opportunities for paid work for artists. And more art parties! The Frederick Arts Council has a policy now that they don’t take anything for free, and are strict about paying everybody. For that, we salute you, and hope that others follow suit. There's an old saying in electronics that refers to releasing the magic smoke whenever you do something to fry a piece of hardware. Well, my laziness got the best of me, and I released the magic smoke on my trusty desktop computer's motherboard when I swapped out a power supply without pulling the old modular cables. So, this episode is later than usual, but hopefully a belated music-filled episode is better than no episode, and there's a bunch of great stuff in this episode, including new Kudai, new WirgHata, along with tracks from CHOSEN, Havok, and Oak Pantheon. There's also tracks from Cooked Pears, Дубль Пусто, and Forgenheim. But what's really a thrill for me is being able to play the band of someone I've chatted with online for many years who is a member of a band that might be familiar to you: Dropdead. I've been asking for years for them to make something Creative Commons, and finally they're part of the AS220's Spring Sampler 2013 (which is released under a Creative Commons License). With so much great music packed into this episode hopefully you'll agree that it's better late than never, and hopefully I'll remember that just because it fits doesn't mean it'll work.
