The Field Guides
Ep. 76 - The Insect Apocalypse! (Part 2)

The Field Guides

It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. Joy won't cure you, but it will carry you. After surviving a stage-four cancer diagnosis, Kate Bowler knew she was supposed to be grateful. Alive. Blessed. But she still ached—for more connection, more surprise, less resentment on an ordinary day. So she went looking for joy. Not the toxic positivity kind. Not a 5-step plan. But the type that sneaks in unexpectedly, seemingly out of nowhere. A lemur sunbathing. A belly laugh at a funeral. A dive into the Atlantic with a shark wrangler. In Joyful, Anyway, Bowler takes us on a hilarious and tender journey through big questions and small delights. With wry wit and deep honesty, she explores how joy can surprise us even in the middle of pain, boredom, and longing. This is not a book about fixing your life. It is about how we can all find more—feel more—by making room for small extraordinary moments. For anyone who has ever felt stuck, who is achy for meaning, who feels undone by loss, who feels that joy is just out of reach, who wants, simply, to have more fun, Joyful Anyway is a delicious, insightful tour through the questions that sit in the deepest part of our souls. It proves that for every time we ask: Is this it? Joy will answer: there is more. Joyful, Anyway releases on April 7, 2026, but you can pre-order now from all of your favorite retailers. Forty-one years ago, Bob Bowler walked into a Special Olympics event during his lunch break. He had no plan, no role, and no agenda—only a desire to serve. That small step turned into a lifetime of impact: raising funds, starting sports programs, and founding a camp for children with special needs that now serves over 335 campers and draws more than 500 volunteers each year. In this episode, I share Bob's story and the three leadership lessons I learned from him: Find joy in other people's dreams coming true Serve expecting nothing in return Choose positivity over negativity Bob's example shows that leadership starts with initiative, service, and discipline. His story might inspire you to take the next step in your own journey.

On today's podcast, I speak with Todd Bowler from, Western Australian Police Tactical Response Group Veteran. Todd has 23 years of combined Police experience, consisting of general duties, close personal protection, and undercover work, with 15 years of experience as a Team Leader and Senior Instructor with the WA Police Tactical Response Group, Todd has led high-risk operations ranging from shootouts with armed criminals to arresting the Claremont Serial Killer and billion dollar drug busts. He's worked deep undercover and provided close personal protection for U.S. Presidents and members of the British Royal family. After 23 years in the Police, Todd decided to transition back to the civilian world. Like most veterans and first responders, Todd found it hard to transition after living a very kinetic life, as all first responders live when they are serving. Todd has found purpose after service. He is now a keynote speaker and is working overseas. This is a story of true grit, determination, and never giving in. Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Todd Bowler Editor: Kyle Watkins

In this engaging and insightful dialogue, Hailey Bowler Cook and Nona Djavid discuss their journeys in wellness, personal growth, and achieving remarkable success through unconventional means. The conversation covers themes such as taking bold, 'unreasonable' actions, quantum leaping, and the importance of energetics over mechanics in achieving goals. Both women share their experiences transitioning from more traditional healthcare roles to dynamic, holistic careers. Hailey recounts her near-death experience and how it reshaped her approach to life and business. They emphasize the importance of reclaiming inner power, embracing discomfort as a catalyst for growth, and living purposefully. They also touch upon the nature of time, the interplay between physical actions and energetic states, and the concept of being 'unfuckwithable.' This episode is an inspiring exploration of pushing boundaries, personal evolution, and aligning with one's highest potential.01:35 Journey from Chiropractic to Holistic09:03 Energetics vs. Mechanics24:47 Embracing Evolution and Personal Growth28:36 Channeling and Writing 'Unfuckwithable'30:20 A Near-Death Experience and Its Lessons

During our summer break, we are re-airing some of our favorite episodes! In a world that constantly demands more—more work, more achievement, more hustle—how do we learn to pause? Kate sits down with her sister Maria Bowler, a writer, creativity coach, and spiritual director, to talk about the pressures of the “producer self,” that voice inside us all that equates our worth with what we do, fix, or achieve. This conversation is an invitation to live differently—to embrace rest, love, and the sacredness of simply being. For the overachievers, the caregivers, and the deeply tired (you know who you are): you are already enough. In this conversation, Kate and Maria discuss: How to see one another (and ourselves) through a lens of love How to give yourself permission to rest and procrastinate The difference between meaningful work and the hustle that leaves us hollow If you liked this episode, you’ll also love: Oliver Burkeman: New Year, Same Me Liz Gilbert: Why Your Creativity Matters Emma Gannon: The Butterfly Era Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. I edited the original audio so that most of the sound between the speaking was removed. I then put that file through the software that I developed for an earlier work that chops the original audio up into smaller sections and plays those sections back at random times, volumes and positions in the stereo field.  "I have then processed the final recording to make it sound more like a surveillance recording through a small speaker and added a drone that runs through the piece."  Bowler hat exhibit at Blenheim Palace reimagined by Simon Belshaw.

As Global Head of Equity Derivatives Research at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Ben Bowler is helping the firm's institutional client base understand the complex risk dynamics that impose themselves on today's markets. His process often leads him across asset classes, looking for linkages and developing stress indices that may provide early warning signs for US equity markets. Our discussion first considers the recent SPX vol event, which, from a short-term severity standpoint, Ben puts in a category with the GFC and Covid. He further makes the point that since the Tariff uncertainty was self-imposed, it was as if we were in the midst of the Covid crisis but already had the vaccine in hand.We then explore the work that Ben and his team have done on the concept of fragility. Here, he argues that the speed and magnitude of vol spikes, flash crashes and tantrum in markets has increased. In fact, in US single stocks, he suggests that fragility is at an all-time high with the reaction to earnings faster and more violent. Two factors may be playing a role. First, there is substantial crowding in certain risk exposures, like large cap tech. And second, liquidity provision, increasingly electronic in nature and sometimes rapidly withdrawn during times of stress.Lastly, we discuss the history of innovation and how investors have generally pulled forward the benefits of path-breaking new technologies, leading to asset price bubbles. Here, Ben is thinking about right tail risk and how important optionality may be in hedging the risk that the AI bubble could inflate substantially.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Ben Bowler.

Today, Merideth's guest is the delightful Maria Bowler, a writer, coach, and retreat leader who views creativity as a spiritual, political, and existential issue. She struggled with creative blocks early in life and found that the typical advice of focusing on craft or routine didn't solve the deeper issue. Her new book, "Making Time: a New Vision for Crafting a Life beyond Productivity," offers a different perspective on overcoming resistance and embracing imperfection. In this powerful book, Maria encourages all with this truth: creativity is not about what we produce but about who we are as makers.  Get Making Time Read more about Maria Maria's Substack Maria's IG Support the show on Patreon Join the next Artist's Way Creative Cluster
