The usual chatter before getting into the movie. Steve went out to dinner at an 80s-themed restaurant that wasn't quite like going back in time. Brandon spends too much time wondering about the downfall of the nation and talking about it.Big Ass Spider: A likeable everyman, Alex, goes about his day as a mild-mannered exterminator, shooting his shot with nearly every woman he encounters...when he crosses paths with his arch-nemesis, a spider. But, this isn't just any spider. It's a BIG ASS SPIDER! Then, it abducts the girl of his dreams and climbs to the top of the tallest building in the area. He's gotta rescue her. Have we seen this movie before?Big Ass Spider final grade: Steve: A really good movie, enjoyable/entertaining for just about anyone. Probably have to deduct a few points because it was too good. Lots of nods to other movies, but they were put together well. 4.25/5.0Brandon: José is the star of the show. Buddy comedy aspects work well. My sister wouldn't like it, but that's her problem.4.196/5.0Cocktail of the Week:The Black Widow (Amalgamated)1 1/2 oz Tequila (we also tried Vodka)2 oz Unsweetened Pomegranate Juice1/2 oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice2 teaspoons SugarTopo Chico or other Sparkling/Mineral WaterA handful of blackberriesAdd sugar, berries, and lime juice to a shaking tin, muddle to combine and express blackberry juice. Add your liquor of choice, and pomegranate juice. Shake to combine and chill, then strain over rocks in a Collins glass. Top with Topo Chico. If you're drinking this in winter, thank a Mexican or Central American farmer.Cocktail Grade: A delicious super-fruit cocktail. Steve liked it a little better with vodka than with tequila, but it's a 4/4.5 drink either way. Found My Fitness - Rhonda Patrick Key Takeaways Microplastics don't just vanish in our bodies, they accumulate; by understanding the sources, we can take preventive measures to avoid or minimize the use of harmful productsOnce microplastics enter our bodies, they can circulate in our bloodstream and deposit in various tissues and the bloodstream As our environmental plastic pollution increases, so does the accumulation in human tissueWhile the body does have mechanisms to clear toxins, we're in an almost constant cycle of consuming and clearing microplastics and associated chemicals (BPA, BPS, phthalates)Top sources of microplastic and chemical exposure: Water (both tap and bottled), air, synthetic clothing, food packaging, cookwareMicroplastics play an active role in damaging our organs, disrupting our hormones, impacting fertility, causing cancer, and possibly increasing the risk of neurodegenerative diseaseStrategies to reduce exposure to microplastics and associated chemicals: (1) Try to avoid packaged food, and especially heating food in plastic; (2) Consider setting up reverse osmosis filtration at home; (3) Reduce consumption of canned foods; (4) Use a mug or bring your own to a coffee shop; (5) Opt for cookware made of titanium, ceramic, cast iron; (6) Drink from glass bottles instead of plastic or cans; (7) Use a HEPA filter at home; (8) Try to wear clothing made of natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, linen, silkBe a savvy consumer: Many products labeled as BPA free still contain BPS (which is equally harmful) or phthalates (arguably more harmful)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org Sweating helps enhance microplastic-associated chemical excretion. On to the movie, Mad Cow: A mad scientist vows to continue his quest to create the perfect super-soldier by Frankensteining a bunch of body parts from powerful physical specimens. Luckily a crack squad of very special police and the T.W.A.T are around the protect the citizenry. Night of the Wererooster final grade: Steve This one would be an easy top-shelfer, were it not for the last 10 minutes. Bad acting, but funny writing that draws from other classic comedies was great. Unfortunately, gotta dock them for the extended ending. 3.69/5.0 Brandon There were plenty of laughs in this one, but at some point, it seemed like they were trying to hard. The good jokes could have hit better with more setup. Trying to do a Monty Python/National Lampoon/Every other funny move ever got a little busy. 3.56/5 Cocktail of the Week: Gin Daisy 1 1/2 oz Dry Gin, but it was good with "Gin" too 1/2 oz Fancy Grenadine 1/4 oz Benedictine Dom 3/4 oz Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice Topo Chico or other sparkling water Add all ingredients to a shaking tin. Upon its much hyped debut in 2019, Recess was dubbed by the press as “the Lacroix of CBD.” Founder and CEO Ben Witte has always preferred a different tagline: “the Red Bull of relaxation.” CBD was the fuel for Recess' hot start, but when the beverage industry cooled on the cannabinoid — the result of a challenging regulatory environment — the company turned to another trendy ingredient: magnesium. In 2021, Recess introduced Recess Mood, a new line of sparkling waters infused with magnesium and adaptogens and marketed as modern relaxation beverages. Leading with the tagline of “calm, cool, collected,” the products have become the primary driver of sales of the brand and represent the vision that founder and CEO Ben Witte says he always had for Recess: a platform of beverages intended to help people relax. The company later added Mood powders to the mix, and in 2022 launched a line of zero-proof mocktails that Ben describes as a natural extension of the brand. Recess has emerged from the pivot as a prime-time player that is sold in over 18,000 stores nationally and is one of the best-selling beverage brands on Amazon. It is mentioned and merchandised alongside the likes of high-profile drinks like Olipop, Poppi and Liquid Death. In this episode, Ben talks about how he navigated a shift toward a product mix that realizes his vision of a relaxation beverage platform, how Recess built a thriving online business, how the company utilizes consumer feedback to support its sales and marketing efforts and why it is preparing for a major expansion in brick-and-mortar retail. Show notes: 0:35: Ben Witte, Founder & CEO, Recess – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif recalls his first interview with Ben and the hype around Recess' launch in 2019, before the entrepreneur talks about his reasoning for developing a brand focused on relaxation and how the timing of Recess' launch benefited the brand. He also discusses the strategy of building a digitally native omni channel brand, how a quote from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos helped him realize the importance of patience, and how he identified magnesium as an anchor ingredient for Recess. Ben also explains how the rise of non-alcoholic beer has helped the development of Recess' zero-proof cocktails, how consumers' interactions with consumers has evolved and the brand's communication has changed and how brick-and-mortar success is tied to online advertising. Brands in this episode: Recess, Olipop, Poppi, Liquid Death, White Claw, Athletic Brewing, High Noon, Cutwater, Topo Chico, Kin, Ghia
