September is Urology Awareness Month, which is quite necessary considering there are less than four hundred practicing Reproductive Urologists in the United States. This episode serves as an opportunity to understand the intense training it takes to become a Reproductive Urologist (RU), what role they play in men's health and reproductive health, as well as how they work in conjunction with Reproductive Endocrinologists.    In today's episode, Progyny's Chief Medical Officer and Reproductive Endocrinologist, Dr. Janet Choi gives insight into the role of RUs and how they differ from Reproductive Endocrinologists (REIs).  Dr. Choi expands on her own position as an REI; what kind of training she received, who she treats, and how male patients can benefit from seeing an RU if they are already seeing an REI.    Video mentioned in this episode: Reproductive Urologists Can Help Men with Infertility         Guest: Dr. Janet Choi, Chief Medical Officer at Progyny     Host: Dan Bulger, Progyny     For more information, visit Progyny's Podcast page and Progyny's Education page for more resources. It's National Infertility Awareness Week, and this year, we've crafted two episodes that address the age-old truth: it takes a village. Not only does it take a village to raise a child as the saying goes, but it also often takes a village to start or grow a family, especially when challenged with infertility. Reproductive Endocrinologists, Nurses, Patient Care Advocates, managers and HR leaders, partners, family members and friends may all step up, but at the end of the day, the journey starts with you. That was certainly true for Cristina Loughrey on her journey to motherhood. Cristina spent much of her 20's and 30's focused on building her career, and not having found the perfect partner, she began to accept that motherhood may not be in the cards for her. Then Cristina found Ian, and together, they found Progyny. Cristina's village included her partner, her employer, her doctor, and care team who helped her through multiple rounds of IVF in a single year, and eventually a pregnancy. In this episode, Cristina details her journey through infertility, stress, and the possibility of the treatment being unsuccessful. Guests: Cristina Loughrey, Senior Manager of Content Strategy and Narrative Architect at LinkedIn  Host: Lissa Kline, Progyny For more information, visit Progyny's Podcast page and Progyny's Education page for more resources.  Be sure to follow us on Instagram, @ThisisInfertilityPodcast and use the #ThisisInfertility.     Have a question, comment, or want to share your story? The journey to becoming a mother is not necessarily a straight path, even for those who have regular cycles. And often conventional fertility doctors don't have the answers and recommend jumping straight to IVF at the first sign of a problem. But my oldest, dearest friend was not taking no for an answer. This week I'm sharing a really special episode — an intimate chat with my bestie about her journey to becoming a mom. Heather Snyder Ippolito, 45, is the owner of The Graceful Body, a mother of 2 young kids, and lives in NY. She went through a LOT to become a mother and is happy to share her experience with listeners of the podcast. She is an Alexander Technique teacher, posture coach and Pilates teacher and loves helping others in any way she can. That journey included high ANA antibodies, silent endometriosis, high natural killer cells, MTHFR, a fibroid, and more. She worked with 2 Reproductive Endocrinologists, a GYN, and finally found a doctor who specialized in reproductive immunology. She had IUIs, two rounds of IVF, endo removal surgery, and multiple medications including immunosuppressants and injectables. And she went through several chemical pregnancies and a medical termination before finally having a successful pregnancy with her son after more than 5 years of trying. And even then, although everything was looking great during her pregnancy, she never really believed that she would end up with an actual baby at the end of the journey. (Spoiler alert: she did, he's now almost 6, and is a super cool kid.) After having her son, she felt that her family was not yet complete, but she couldn't go through the 5 years of hell again, physically and emotionally. So she almost immediately started looking into adoption for her second and all of the options there. (Hint: it's not "easier" and it too requires persistence.) I hope that you enjoy listening in on this conversation between me and my BFF.  *There are a few swears (we're NYers), so listen with headphones if you have little ones or are listening at work. This Week We Talk About:  The early days of her relationship with her husband being long-distance and some other challenges Being proactive when trying to conceive in your mid-30s and trusting your gut How not getting answers from conventional medicine drove Heather to find the doctor who COULD help her through reproductive immunology The monthly hope and devastation of not getting pregnant, chemical pregnancies and miscarriages The brutal decision to terminate a much-wanted pregnancy Having difficulty believing her healthy pregnancy would result in a healthy baby Going through the adoption process for her second child How to support a friend who's going through fertility hell   Mentioned in this episode Tempdrop Exclusive Offer - I'm excited to partner with Tempdrop because not only do I recommend it to my clients, but I also use it myself! #4: In this episode I sit down with my good friend and RD, Abby Cannon, to chat all about infertility and our journeys to get pregnant. We both share our stories from going off the pill (birth control) in our mid-twenties and struggling to regain our menstrual cycles post pill (which never came back!). Then we were both eventually diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”. We dive into our experiences with merging both eastern and western medicine practices to start a family by incorporating acupuncture into our routine while also relying on hormones from our Reproductive Endocrinologists. Abby and her husband also experienced the heartache of a miscarriage during this journey prior to getting pregnant, which she openly speaks about in the episode. Our conversation is longer than most episodes, but it is incredibly open and vulnerable and something we hope comforts anyone who may be struggling to start a family of their own. Counseling in reproductive health issues includes the emotional, psychological, and relational difficulties that occur when individuals and couples have unexpected roadblocks to growing their family.  She regularly provides consultations, education, and support for individuals and couples pursuing egg, sperm,  or embryo donation,  those seeking  a gestational carrier and those wishing to freeze their eggs for later use.  Each month she facilitates  a general infertility group and a couple’s infertility group.  In addition to working in her private practice, she is a social worker on staff in the Complementary Care department of a prestigious New Jersey  practice of Reproductive Endocrinologists. When working with clients who have experienced trauma, be it infertility related,  or sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, Bette is informed by many  modalities of treatment including but not limited to  Internal Family Systems, Pia Mellody’s Post Induction Therapy for Relational Immaturity,  and EMDR. As we age and grow, we all face any number of transitions – death or estrangement from loved ones, parenting or childfree living, divorce, or employment changes in these challenging  economic times. Learning cognitive strategies to neutralize negative thought patterns, building mind/body techniques to help with relaxation in order to get ‘unstuck’,  and learning to set boundaries, manage emotions and expectations, and operating  from your ‘best adult self’  can help while transitioning. After  many years of working in the fashion business, Bette went back to school for her master’s degree in social work.  She had her own difficulty with infertility and is passionate about helping those going through that difficult journey. Kelly Castleberry desired to be more natural with her fertility soon after getting married, and picked up the book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility.” Kelly stopped taking the birth control pill and they avoided pregnancy for several months before attempting to conceive. When it didn’t happen within a few cycles, Kelly became alarmed and started seeking help. They experienced 1 failed IUI, 3 IVFs, and 1 miscarriage by the time they were 27. They had no living children and were without answers as to why they were experiencing infertility. The lack of compassion from their Reproductive Endocrinologists led them to walk away from mainstream infertility treatments in 2003. In 2004 they adopted a son, and in 2006 Kelly gave birth to a daughter. In the years that have followed, they have desired to continue the growth of our family, and that desire lead them to the Creighton Model FertilityCare System (a natural method of tracking women’s cycles) and NaProTECHNOLOGY. Because their FertilityCare Practitioner and NaProTECHNOLOGY medical consultant gave them answers, renewed hope, and compassion, Kelly wanted to help other women and couples heal from their infertility. In April 2016 she began working towards becoming a FertilityCare Practitioner, graduated from the Education Program in August 2017 and will become certified in early 2019. In June 2018, Kelly started learning how to teach FEMM (another natural method of charting women’s cycles) and TeenFEMM. She will take the 3 hour final exam in early 2019 and then be certified. Kelly also offers Organic Conceptions, an audio program that helps the couple improve emotional wellness - their sense of self, their ability to cope, and begin engaging in life again with newfound control on the journey to parenthood and beyond. Kelly works in a GYN office as an Office Manager/Health Educator teaching local patients and runs her own business – Dunwoody FertilityCare where she teaches the Creighton Model FertilityCareSystem and FEMM via Skype to clients all over the world. www.gafertilitycare.com Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @gafertilitycare For more information about Michelle, visit www.thewholesomelotus.com For information on the Wholesome Fertility Method online program visit www.thewholesomefertilitymethod.com The Wholesome Fertility facebook group is where you can find free resources and support: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2149554308396504/

Preventing HG Podcast: Hyperemesis Gravidarum | Pregnancy | Morning Sickness | Nutrition | Root Causes | Alternative Treatmen

Dr. Michael Fox is not the first person to suggest that the cause of morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum starts with blood sugar dysregulation but he is one of the few OB-GYN and Reproductive Endocrinologists who suggests that eating a ketogenic diet during pregnancy is not only safe for mom and baby but also the answer to this blood sugar dysregulation. Dr. Fox thinks that the problem starts with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), then gets worse when women eat carbohydrates (which turn into sugar in the blood) to combat the nausea (crackers anyone?), which can spike insulin 2-3 times what it would be in a non-pregnant woman, then add in dehydration, which makes everything worse, loss of nutrients (from vomiting and not eating) (especially magnesium, zinc and b vitamins) and so begins the cascade of symptoms that spirals out of control leaving the newly pregnant women feeling like she's dying with no hope of coming out of it. Add in doctors and nurses telling a women that it's "normal" and there is nothing that can be done and you have a very bad scene. In this episode we discuss: Ideal diet for Fertility, pregnancy, and beyond Fat provides the most sustained energy for the longest length of time Carbs= Sugar "Fat protects you against hypoglycemia better than any other macronutrient." Minimum time to be on diet to prepare for pregnancy, 6 weeks. 12 weeks would be ideal. Older cultures had special foods and preparations for fertile couples to have healthy babies. It's hard to convince women that they need to eat a lot of fat If ketosis was bad, we wouldn't be here. Not enough studies about nutritional ketosis and pregnancy It would take thousands of patients to study to be statistically relevant Pre-eclampsia related to insulin resistance It's hard to accept that nutrition could be an effective treatment Many diseases are nutritional in nature Links mentioned in this episode: Dr. Fox Website Facebook Twitter Podcast with Diana Podcast with Lily about Gestational Diabetes and a low carb/high fat diet Diana's article about her experience with low carb/high fat diet to prevent HG

Host: Alan S. Brown, MD, FNLA An old clinical dogma in OB/GYN was that dyslipidemia during pregnancy wouldn't have any long term implications on the developing fetus because of short exposures at 9 months. This has since been shown to be untrue. What health issues surface in children whose mothers experienced abnormally elevated lipid levels in pregnancy, and how can these problems be prevented at the peripartum stage? Host Dr. Alan Brown joins Dr. Robert Wild, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, to discuss prevention and treatment strategies for dyslipidemia during pregnancy. Dr. Wild is past president of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists, the Oklahoma City Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and the Menopause Group for the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
