Does baby sleep make you anxious? Does your anxiety keep you from sleeping? Either or both of these things can be true. The relationship between anxiety and sleep as a new parent is complex. IN this episode I'm joined by Clare Donofrio, a perinatal psychotherapist, to talk withme about the ways our anxiety shows up in relationship to sleep in early parenting. Clare shares some ways you can recognize anxiety and OCD in the perinatal period and early parenting. Our conversation focuses on lots of examples of how anxiety and OCD affect parent sleep, sleep decisions, and the ability to listen to your instincts and parent from your own values (rather than outside expectations). We both share our experiences and support for more normalizing of what's normal so you can better cope with it – something that benefits all parents, and especially anxious parents. Wetalk about the importance of both social support and accessing clinical support for anxiety. Clare also shares some suggestions for how to start reflecting on your own parenting values if you aren't sure about them yet. I see a lot of anxious parents in my work and it was so wonderful to have thisconversation. I hope you have some great takeaways.About ClareClare Donofrio, MPH, LCSW-C, PMH-C (she/her) is a perinatal psychotherapist in Maryland. Quotes - "The worst thing that would happen to me was I would be exactly where I was in that moment, which was a great job at a great tech company." - Nathalie Walton - "You actually don't need a formal mentor. You can just follow people and get everything you need to know." - Nathalie Walton - "Investing in yourself always leads to outsized returns." - Nathalie Walton - "Your time is more valuable than money. On this episode of She Dynasty, we're talking all things mothers and mental health! Nathalie Walton, VP of Brand and Social Impact at Babylist and Co-Founder & former CEO of Expectful, joins Valerie and opens up about the risks she took in the name of entrepreneurialism, the sacrifices necessary to do so as a new mother, and her path to becoming the CEO of the mental health app she used during her own pregnancy.
Nathalie Walton found that there were not enough resources devoted to the mental health of expecting mothers. After a serious health scare during her pregnancy, Nathalie turned to the Expecftul app to find peace of mind. The app moved her so much that she became an advisor and eventually a late-stage co-founder and CEO. She helped transform Expectful from a mediation app to a powerful tool for parents and soon-to-be parents. In this episode, you will hear Nathalie's stories of approaching parenthood, being a business leader, and the strategies she and her husband used to navigate the process. Her candid story is the perfect listen for current and soon-to-be parents. Nathalie always had an Entreprenista spirit, but it wasn't until she found a meditation app during her high-risk pregnancy that she realized how she wanted to implement that spirit. After she made it to term with her pregnancy––she credits Expectful's meditations––she decided to join forces with Expectful and helped grow the brand. Today, we sit down with Nathalie Walton, co-founder and CEO of Expectful, a holistic wellness app for hopeful, expecting, and new moms. Nathalie shares with us what she's learned about fundraising, how to sell a business, tips for building partnerships, and so much more. “I came across this app called Expectful. “When a woman decides she has had enough of living by anyone else's rules but her own, she usually decides to change her life.” - Jessie Harrold In this episode of Moonwise, we speak with coach, women's mentor and doula Jessie Harrold about supporting women through radical life transformations. We discuss her approach to rites of passage as identity shift and why she feels we're collectively being called toward transformation. We talk about reconnection with our authenticity and reclaiming parts of ourselves that were framed as “too much.” Jessie shares her 4-element model of radical transformation and why a framework for navigating these shifts is so helpful. We also talk about: The lack of research in Western culture about rites of passage Why the shift to motherhood is so profound for many women How capitalism conditions us to believe mother is a demotion The importance of rewilding and connecting to the earth Core competencies we gain through a rite of passage Mothering as a counter-cultural act Jessie Harrold is a coach, women's mentor and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over a decade. Jessie works one-on-one with women and mothers, facilitates mentorship programs, women's circles and rituals, and hosts retreats and wilderness quests. If you are pregnant and are expecting gifts, there are several reasons you should consider a baby registry. A registry helps friends and family know what you need and want. Without a registry, you will end up with items you do not need that you cannot return or exchange. A registry eliminates duplicates because once someone buys an item, the list updates to show someone purchased it. There are also perks for parents who create a baby registry. Many will give you a welcome gift that includes baby items, samples, and coupons. The majority of registries will also offer a completion discount. This means you can get a discount on any remaining items you purchase off your registry. This episode walks you through considerations when choosing where to register, the pros and cons of the top options, and tips for building your baby registry. The tradition of baby showers as we know them today began in the 1930s. The term "shower" comes from showering the expecting mother with gifts. Baby showers are so much more than presents. A baby shower is a celebration of becoming a mother and the new baby joining your family. You can choose to celebrate with all the prim and proper of a traditional baby shower, or you can opt for a get-together that throws all the rules out the window. However, you choose to celebrate your baby and becoming a mother, I hope you feel special and celebrated by friends and family. This episode covers everything you need to know about a baby shower, including etiquette, planning tips, and ideas to make your baby shower the perfect celebration. What if when you were twenty weeks pregnant, your doctor told you that there was a good chance you wouldn't be able to carry your baby to term? Nathalie Walton, Chief Executive, CEO, and co-founder of the Expectful app, understood that the stress and anxiety of knowing that she could give birth prematurely might actually increase her chances of going into early labor. So what would you do if you discovered an app that provided meditations designed to help reduce stress during pregnancy? Would you decide to look for other, more traditional methods of preventing premature birth? Or would you dive into Expectful's meditations and let them help you carry your baby to term? In this episode, Wendy and Jessie discuss some of the transformative life experiences women go through (like motherhood, leadership, empty nesting, menopause and sobriety). They also talk about the importance of slowing down, listening to your body and heart and using what you learn to develop rituals of meaningful self-care. Jessie shares her definition of “ritual” and explains how we can use ritual to “put a pin in our life map” and mark important experiences. Jessie's work has been featured in Spirituality & Health, Green Parent, Expectful and Explore Magazine. She is also the host of The Becoming Podcast. Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada where she mothers her two children, writes, and tends to her land. Learn more about Jessie at https://www.jessieharrold.com/
This week I speak to one of the UK's top holistic female health experts, Sara Cosendai. Sara is a naturopathic nutritionist, clinical aromatherapist, doula, prenatal yoga teacher and Kundalini yoga teacher. What she does is truly magical, because, in blending all her qualifications and passions, she has found a way to support women during the most transformational time in their lives, to ensure a smooth trip from pre-conception right through to motherhood and beyond. Sara was fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by the innovators of the natural birth movement in 1980s London and in this episode we speak about how her formative years shaped her view of childbirth and subsequently led to the passions she still holds today. Sara talks us through why mothers often struggle in both the lead up to birth, and afterwards, and offers advice on how to struggle less at this time and enjoy those early months / years. She gives tips on how to stay healthy during this integral time and talks us through her incredible model of motherhood coaching, and why it is so needed now more than ever. She has kindly included a link for Expectful, a guided meditation app for fertility, pregnancy and motherhood which you can access here: www.expectful.com/mymama Products mentioned in the show: The Gentle Birth Method by Gowri Motha Ina May's Guide to Childbirth – Ina May Gaskin Mara seaweed powder You can find Sara and book a session over on her website www.mymama.org and on Instagram @sara.cosendai.
