The ‘capacity crisis' in leadership today

ABA Banking Journal Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2025 21:06 Transcription Available

Princess Castleberry began her career in risk management in financial services, and the biggest risk she sees today is that “leaders are in a capacity crisis.” Work experience, education and professional networks are undermined by this lack of capacity driven by emotional triggers, she says, which are in turn compounded by a massive wave of societal, economic and technological change. Now an instructional design expert and leadership speaker, Castleberry discusses how leaders can understand and manage triggers to enhance their capacity to lead with empathy. Castleberry will also be discussing these and other topics — including how to reduce “conflict waste” — at the ABA Annual Convention next month in Charlotte.

Andrew Mitchell, 59, of Sunbury, pleaded guilty to two counts of depriving individuals of their civil rights while acting under color of law and one count of obstructing justice, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. Mitchell spent more than 30 years with the Columbus Division of Police and was assigned to the vice union for the final two years of his employment, which ended in 2019, prosecutors said. While working as a detective in July 2017, Mitchell wore plain clothes and drove an unmarked car when he handcuffed a sex worker to his vehicle, then drove to a parking lot and detained the woman against her will after identifying himself as an officer, prosecutors said. Two months later, while again working as a plainclothes detective, he questioned a sex worker about rates before he said he was an officer and then kidnapped her, prosecutors said. Mitchell was acquitted earlier this year of murder and manslaughter charges stemming from the death of a woman he shot while he was working undercover. He was indicted after shooting and killing Donna Castleberry, 23, as she sat in his unmarked police vehicle in August 2018. He said he acted in self-defense after she stabbed him in the hand during an undercover prostitution investigation. The jury in that trial reached its verdict after deliberating for about five hours. Mitchell faces up to 11 years on the three charges. Credit for time served could knock five years of the sentence. Under the terms of the plea deal, Mitchell will not have to register with the state as a sex offender.

Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor. This is episode 628 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Alan Gayton is a 51-year-old IT geek who has been playing with computers since he was a kid stealing software on a Commodore 64. He started his career as the first Technology Specialist for Gordon County Schools, where he had the dubious honor of fixing the computers and switches that always broke down. He then became an Instructional Technology Specialist, where he had to deal with endless questions such as “What does ‘click here' mean?” He is now the Director of Technology for the North Georgia RESA, where he has the daunting task of managing the technology needs and issues of the RESA and its 5-member school districts. When he is not glued to his screen or phone, Alan likes to pretend that he is a pitmaster and a martial arts expert. He competes in competition BBQ as one half of team Q-Inator!, which is a clever name that he came up with after watching too much Phineas and Ferb. He and his partner have won some trophies and ribbons in various categories, but they are still far from being the best of the best. Alan also practices karate, which he learned from watching Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He has a black belt, which he bought online (or maybe earned at UKS Karate), and he likes to show off his moves to anyone who will watch. Alan is always willing to help or teach someone something new, as long as they don't ask too many questions or challenge his authority. He is a proud father of two children who are smarter and more talented than him, and a loyal husband to his wife who puts up with his antics. He lives in Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoys the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Alan's Brunswick Stew Recipe MEAT: ½ lb smoked pork ½ lb smoked beef ½ lb smoked chicken OR 1 can Castleberry BBQ Pork 1 can Castleberry BBQ Beef ! lrg can Chunk Chicken 2 cans cream corn 2 cans petite diced tomatoes 1 bottle Chili sauce ¼ cup favorite bbq sauce (more or less to taste) Hot sauce to taste Salt and pepper to taste   Mix all in crock pot and cook on high for around 4 hours or on low for around 8.   A few notes: Meat To get it to turn out more like mine, you will need to use smoked meat and run it through a grinder with a large-holed plate. It will still be great if you don't, but it does give it that more authentic texture Home smoked meat is best, but you can also get it from a local bbq restaurant If you decide to use canned, it is getting hard to find the Castleberry's products in stores (particularly the beef) but you can probably use other brands or shop online. Feel free to add other veggies to make it how you like. Awesome conversation! Had so much fun! Enjoy it!   Before you go... Could you do me a favor? SONI CASTLEBERRY and her husband, Brad, moved to Louisville just after they married over 50 years ago. The Fellowship of Reconciliation was one of the first groups in which they were involved while raising their daughters, Kendra and Kara. Soni worked at The Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times as a copy clerk, re-writer, and reporter in the court system in the 1970s. She resigned so she could advocate for justice issues of concern to her. Using her educational background in journalism and public relations, Soni worked in non-profit organizations related to housing, homelessness, older adults, domestic violence, elder abuse and neglect, mental illness, children's services, and fair trade. Soni spent her last five years prior to her 2020 retirement starting and working in Writing for You, primarily a grant-writing business she initiated with two friends. Soni has been an active member of Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church since 1988 and served in a variety of capacities. Since its origins in a youth Sunday school class in 2018, she has been involved in the Gun Violence Prevention Team which has grown to include people from various faith and community groups. Guns to Gardens Louisville is a part of that effort and Soni serves as one of its spokespersons. CRAIG KAVIAR Sculptor and Blacksmith, Craig Kaviar has been producing forged iron and bronze sculpture, architectural elements and furniture in Louisville, KY since 1985. Kaviar is an alumnus of Tufts University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and has studied at the Boston Museum School. Kaviar has been passionately making metalwork for over 30 years in the inferno of Kaviar Forge. Craig not only works with glowing hot températures to shape unyielding materials, he also shares this mystical experience by teaching others. The primary forge where Craig heats metal to 3,000 degrees has been converted to run on waste vegetable oil. Neighborhood restaurants kindly provide him with fuel to help reduce the forge's carbon footprint while allowing him to produce high quality work. His public artworks include a bronze sculpture in front of the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts; five-foot-high bronze door handles at the entrance of the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft; gates and grills at First Unitarian Church and Christ Church Cathedral; the Holocaust memorial at Temple Congregation Adath Israel Brith Sholom and pool gates at the Jewish Community Center; all in Louisville. He is also represented in many private collections throughout the United States.
