Send us a textIn this episode, Renee shares her experience of choosing a home birth for her first baby, explaining what led her to that decision and how she prepared for it. She speaks openly about her intense journey with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), describing the constant nausea, relentless vomiting, and exhaustion that lasted throughout her entire pregnancy — right up until the moment she gave birth. Renee talks about everything she tried to manage it, including medications, IV fluids, and natural approaches, and the emotional and physical toll of living with little relief. She also reflects on the financial strain caused by months of sickness and lost work. At 17 weeks, she experienced a bleed, adding extra worry during an already difficult time. She also discusses what it was like breastfeeding her large toddler while pregnant and how demanding that was on her body. Finally, Renee shares how she's working to heal — physically, emotionally, and mentally — after such a challenging pregnancy.Links:Embrace Midwifery ServicesHER foundation HER foundation - HELP ScoreHyperemesis Australia Hyperemesis Australia - PUQE-24 ScoreNausea & vomiting + HG factsheetGDF15 linked to maternal risk of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy Midwives Cauldron - HG infoThe Great Birth Rebellion - Nausea & Vomiting (not HG)The chance of recurrence of HGRecurrence, postponing pregnancy, and termination rates after HGSupport the show@homebirthstoriesaustralia Support the show by buying us a coffee! She earned her PharmD from Creighton University in 2016 and has since had a broad pharmacy career spanning retail, hospital, consulting, and medical affairs.   Combining clinical expertise with lived experience, Danielle specializes in supporting pregnant patients, particularly those suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). After studying treatments for other diseases of malnutrition in pharmacy school, she became certified in pharmacogenetics and as an antepartum doula. This, along with a community of pharmacy entrepreneurs, inspired her to launch HG Pharmacist©, a blog to share information about HG, which later grew into Obstet-Rx©, a consulting company offering personalized medication management and patient advocacy to women worldwide.   Her subject matter expertise has led to board member appointments, speaking engagements, and media contributions for international magazines. In her work as an MSL, she has supported diagnostics for preeclampsia (sFlt-1/PlGF) and procalcitonin, as well as therapies for iron deficiency anemia and small cell lung cancer.   Through her podcast, Danielle shows how pharmacists play a key role in improving maternal outcomes. Send us a Text Message.Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is not morning sickness, but rather a potentially life-threatening complication of pregnancy that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, disability due to severe nausea and/or vomiting and can cause long-term health issues for mother and baby, including death. Today, we are joined by Kimber W. MacGibbon, executive director of the HER foundation, and Ashton Paige Clark, a wife and mother who experienced HG in five pregnancies. Together, they share Ashton's story of struggling through HG and the desperate decision she was forced to make to ensure her survival.  Ashton and Kimber help us understand the true severity of HG, the lack of provider understanding, and the potentially life-saving treatments that are available but often withheld from mothers experiencing HG in their pregnancies. If you are anyone you know is struggling with HG, this episode could be life-saving. How do we move through the discomforts of pregnancy and birth? This comes up in today's interview with Melanie Meador. Melanie shares her journey with both of her home birth experiences.  Melanie had hyperemesis gravidarum with both pregnancies (extreme and persistent nausea during pregnancy, often with frequent vomiting).  With her first birth experience, she was feeling a little rushed going into the process, because her midwifery practice was going to close 3 days after her due date. Plus she was working full-time. The birth lasted 34 hours with her waters broken. This is a stark contrast from her second birth, 6 hours and baby was born en caul (waters still intact).  Melanie is the only person in her group of friends to have had a home birth. And with her mother and almost all of her aunts having cesarean births, this was something unique. Melanie says, “My mom was so excited to be at the birth of my son that she told anyone that would listen for the first 2 years!” This birth story includes: hyperemesis gravidarum, doula, acupuncture, TENs machine, membrane stripping, en caul, cervical lip, and red raspberry leaf tea. This is an international podcast as Joyce speaks with both Tori Moline, a 26 year old Canadian mom with  Hyperemesis Gravidarum, and Lissa Skitolsky and Yael Marcus who discuss Jewish cannabis advocacy and why the cannabis community needs to care about what's going on in Israel for both its national medical program model and the science originating in Israel. Tori Moline discovered she has a genetic pregnancy condition, called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), in 2021. The severe nausea and vomiting were not relieved by the multiple pharmaceuticals prescribed to her, but she found relief with cannabis. Tori discovered that cannabis improved her quality of life by increasing her appetite and decreasing her vomiting – but she kept this knowledge from her doctor and family out of fear and stigma. As a former history teacher, she took it upon herself to learn the history of cannabis and came to understand that the plant was not the devil but rather a miracle for medicinal use.Tori was inspired to help others, so she built her @GoldenTeacherTori platforms around educating moms about HG & Plant Medicine. Tori has founded a community of mom's working towards changing HG care and normalizing cannabis use during an HG pregnancy. She believes all HG moms should have access to cannabis and believes plant medicine is the future of HG care. Dr. Lissa Skitolsky speaks with Joyce from her home in Canada and is an internationally renowned author and the Editor-in-Chief of Cannabis Jew Magazine. Yael Marcus is an experienced brand and business development professional who four years ago relocated to Israel to fulfill her dream to be part of the global medical cannabis/wellness industry. She lived in Kibbutz Nir Oz with her partner until her community was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists on October 7. The discussion of her experience and why the cannabis community needs to support Israel is powerful and inspiring.Topics Discussed(1:11) Welcome(2:35) Jews in Weed(3:05) Grow My Own Update(3:22) The Harvest Cup(3:38) Favorables by Steph great canna cards!(4:20) Lamkin Guitars(5:25) Intro Tori Moline(7:10) Hyperemesis Gravidarum(12:45) Finding Relief with Cannabis(14:38) Canadian Cannabis Status(17:42) Audio Intro – The Letter(18:13) HG Community(19:28) Kelley Usborne – The Cannamommy(21:17) Guest Transition – Yael Marcus(22:00) Israel and Cannabis(23:00) Kibbutz Defined(29:35) The People Taken on October 7(30:50) October 7 as Experienced by Yael Marcus(31:10) Bring Back Green House Nursery Manager(32:44) A Mission to Save the Genetics(37:40) Lissa Skitolsky(38:20) CannabisJew.Com(39:27) Israel's National Cannabis Program(41:00) Help Kibbutz Nir Oz – Through Israel Gives(42:40) Dr. Mechoulam(45:12) Yael's Plea to Bring the Hostages Home(45:50) Back with Tori Moline – Social Media!(46:45) HG Podcast(47:30) Canna Mommy Life(52:45) Check out CBG(54:22) Connect with Tori @GoldenTeacherTori platformsThe Canna Mom Show wants to thank:Josh Lamkin and Bella Jaffe for writing and performing TCMS theme music and Fortuna Design for creating TCMS website.
