For more information on the series in 1944, please tune into Breaking Walls episode 154. The Thanksgiving 1944 episode was called “The Fountain Plays” starring Charles Laughton. It's a story filled with murder, blackmail, and cover-up. The original tale was penned by Dorothy L. Sayers adapted by Robert L. Richards. Richards is famous for having written “The House in Cypress Canyon,” a noted Suspense classic. This is the first of twenty-nine weeks of Roma commercials featuring society figure and entertaining expert Elsa Maxwell. She offers her hard-earned wisdom about wine and other beverage selections. Maxwell was a gossip columnist and writer with occasional movie appearances, but known for her elaborate parties. She is credited with adding games to parties, such as scavenger hunts, to make them more interesting beyond the idle chatter of who was seen with whom or who was invited and who wasn't. Maxwell rose from a lower middle class life in San Francisco to being the host of parties that included big stars and royalty. Elsa Maxwell does not play herself, instead she's played by noted radio actress Lucille Meredith.

Roma wines was satisfied as Suspense was providing stiff competition to The Frank Morgan Show running opposite on NBC Thursday nights at 8PM eastern time. On November 9th Lena Horne guest-starred in a Robert L. Richards script called “You Were Wonderful” about the murder of a nightclub singer in South America. Horne is the visiting American singer intent on solving the crime. Lena Horne was born on June 30th, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. Both sides of her family were multi-racial with both African and Native American heritage. Her father Teddy was a one-time owner of a restaurant and hotel while her mother Edna was an actress with a traveling theater troupe. As a young girl Lena's father left the family to move to Pittsburgh, while Lena traveled with her mother around the country before returning to New York City when she was twelve. Lena dropped out of high school at sixteen and joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club. In 1935 she made her first screen appearance as a dancer in Cab Calloway's musical short Jitterbug Party. She got married in 1937, but soon separated from her husband, first touring with bandleader Charlie Barnet in 1940 before returning to New York to work at Cafe Society in Greenwich Village. She soon replaced Dinah Shore as vocalist on NBC's The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street and recorded with Henry Levine and Paul Laval, in June 1941 for RCA Victor. Horne then left New York City for Hollywood, being hired to perform in a Cotton Club-style revue for Cafe Trocadero on the Sunset Strip. In 1942, when she became the first African-American with a major studio contract, it was with the understanding that she wouldn't be obligated to portray servants—a condition that handicapped her entrée into mainstream Hollywood movies. She soon appeared in the films Panama Hattie, Cabin in the Sky, Stormy Weather, Thousands Cheer, Swing Feever, Broadway Rhythm, and Two Girls and a Sailor. With the exceptions of Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, Lena's early screen appearances were often designed as standalone musical numbers that could easily be cut out in prejudice Southern markets unaccepting of African American performers. Horne's Suspense appearance was big news. Both Spier and his wife Kay Thompson, a friend who worked with her at MGM, pressed the movie studio to allow her to headline the show. Network executives at CBS were concerned that Roma might pull its contract if Southern stations didn't want to air the program. Thompson agreed to appear as Horne's uncredited backup singer in three musical numbers, which Thompson arranged. MGM's publicity department got to work and given the unfortunate day's climate, Horne's appearance was heralded as one of the more daring and successful half hours of network drama at the time. She is the first and only African American to headline Suspense. “It was an event of terrific importance to Lena,” noted Movieland magazine, “for the first time a performance of hers was judged on merit alone; she was announced only as the star of the play, without reference to her race.” Spier noted that in the studio, Lena “seemed so poised, so sure of herself and her every speech, so business-like in her approach to the role.” However when she grabbed his hand for encouragement, she was ice cold. Part of it was performance nerves, but a lot of it came from the anxiety of getting the chance to publicly justify her talent. Horne later said, “Bill was marvelous and intelligent. Anyone married to Kay would have to be strong.” It was an especially memorable and proud evening for members of the African-American community who were glued to their radios in record numbers.

On September 30, 1962 a major milestone in radio drama came to an end with the final episode of the long running series, SUSPENSE. Ironically, the episode was titled "Devil Stone" and was the last dramatic radio play from a series that had its roots in the golden age of radio. What began as a "new series frankly dedicated to your horrification and entertainment" took on a life of its own mostly due to the talents of some outstanding producers and adaptations and original stories from the cream of mystery writers of the time. The golden age of radio was truly the golden age of SUSPENSE as show after show broadcast outstanding plays which were "calculated to intrigue...stir [the] nerves."It was the series' first producer, William Spier, who set the framework of rules that was to stay with the show for most of its run. Mr. Spier determined that the series should deal with life-and-death situations established near the beginning of each play and then through the use of Bernard_Herrmann's musical coloring and the writer's characterizations slowly tighten the knot of SUSPENSE. Many of the early stories were written by the mystery writer John Dickson Carr. Others were by such fine writers as Lucille Fletcher, whose SUSPENSE play, "Sorry, Wrong Number" (listen/download) was turned into a major motion picture; Robert Arthur, Robert L. Richards, Morton Fine, and David Friedkin. The series also drew from the mystery writers of the day as well as the horror writers of literature; writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Cornell Woolrich, Dorothy L. Sayers, and H. G. Wells.

Despite being such a well-regarded episode, "The House in Cypress Canyon" was only performed once on Suspense."The House in Cypress Canyon" is an episode of the American radio series Suspense. Written by Robert L. Richards, produced and directed by William Spier, this episode is consistently cited as one of the most terrifying programs broadcast during radio's Golden Age. It was originally broadcast December 5, 1946.The story begins a few days before Christmas. James (Robert Taylor) and Ellen (Cathy Lewis), married seven years and having recently relocated to California for the husband's engineering job, move into a hastily finished rental house in a development that was started before the war. Dusty furniture and creaky hinges seem to be the only problems with the place at first glance. But the very night they move in, the two hear inhuman cries in the night, and find blood oozing out from under a closet door they can't open. Fleeing the house in a panic, they return with a pair of policemen, only to discover the closet door is unlocked and the blood has vanished. The following night, Ellen, sleep-walking, attacks James like a crazed animal and bites him savagely, waking with no memory of the attack; then the milkman is discovered with his throat torn out. The narrative concludes with James' indication that he has accepted his fate and is no longer afraid; he knows now what he must do. Just then there's a knock on the door and the inhuman scream is heard again. A newspaper article clipped to the manuscript notes that James killed Ellen with a shotgun before turning the weapon on himself. The episode then returns to the framing story, with Sam Spade discussing the case with his friend. The friend explains the paradox that the manuscript was found in the same house in which the story appears to have taken place, but that at the time the manuscript was found, the house was derelict and unfinished. Impossibly, the story set down in the manuscript appears to have taken place in the house *after* the manuscript was discovered. Spade suggests that this is just a coincidence and leaves. After Spade leaves, his friend returns to his regular occupation—a rental agent for the housing development. As the story concludes, a young couple comes into his office and asks about renting the house in Cypress Canyon. The couple is James and Ellen.Robert Taylor (born Spangler Arlington Brugh; August 5, 1911 – June 8, 1969) was an American film and television actor and singer who was one of the most popular leading men of cinema. Taylor began his career in films in 1934 when he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He won his first leading role the following year in Magnificent Obsession. His popularity increased during the late 1930s and 1940s with appearances in Camille (1936), A Yank at Oxford (1938), Waterloo Bridge (1940), and Bataan (1943). During World War II, he served in the United States Naval Air Forces, where he worked as a flight instructor and appeared in instructional films. From 1959 to 1962, he starred in the television series The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor. In 1966, he assumed hosting duties from his friend Ronald Reagan on the series Death Valley Days. Taylor was married to actress Barbara Stanwyck from 1939 to 1952. He married actress Ursula Thiess in 1954, and they had two children. A chain smoker, Taylor died of lung cancer at the age of 57.

In November of 1947, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship of Suspense. Roma's last episode was on November 20th, 1947. As CBS began to sustain the show's cost, they indicated they were no longer interested in offering Suspense to an alcohol brand. For the next five weeks Suspense shifted to Friday evenings live, coast-to-coast at 9:30PM eastern time. December 26th, 1947 was the last of those Fridays. Director William Spier chose Ozzie and Harriet Nelson to star as a husband and wife driven to despair by a hateful invalid uncle. It was called “Too Little To Live On,” and written by Robert L. Richards, who also wrote “The House in Cypress Canyon.” “Too Little To Live On” is a masterpiece in long-scene radio drama. The next week, Suspense began a new hour-long format, hosted by Robert Montgomery. William Spier's last date with the production was January 24th, 1948. He married June Havoc the next day. The Nelsons vacated their Sunday at 6PM time slot to take over the Friday at 9:30 position Suspense occupied here. Although their CBS rating climbed to 13.4 that season, in the fall Ozzie and Harriet Nelson left for NBC.

Suspense - Serial 32, Episode 311 - 320 Title: Suspense Overview: Suspense is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. One of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" and focused on suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. The protagonist was usually a normal person who suddenly was dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation; solutions were "withheld until the last possible second"; and evildoers were usually punished in the end. The highest production values enhanced Suspense, and many of the shows retain their power to grip and entertain. The final broadcasts of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and Suspense ending at 7:00 pm Eastern Time on September 30, 1962, are often cited as the end of the Golden Age of Radio. Suspense - Serial 31, Episode 301 - 310 Title: Suspense Overview: Suspense is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. Suspense - Serial 28, Episode 271 - 280 Title: Suspense Overview: Suspense is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. Suspense - Serial 20, Episode 191 - 200 Title: Suspense Overview: Suspense is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. Suspense - Serial 1, Episode 1 - 10 Title: Suspense Overview: Suspense is a radio drama series broadcast on CBS Radio from 1940 through 1962. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 still exist. On this special bonus podcast for the Month Of Spooky 2020. We play one of my favorite stories from old time radio. The House in Cypress Canyon is an episode from the series Suspense. The plot is presented as a story-within-a-story framed by a meeting between detective Sam Spade (played by Howard Duff) and a friend who has discovered a manuscript regarding a mysterious house.  It was written by Robert L. Richards, and directed by William Spier. This episode is consistently cited as one of the most terrifying programs broadcast during radio's golden age. It was originally broadcast December 5, 1946 and despite its popularity it only aired once during the show's run. In November of 1947, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship of Suspense. Roma’s last episode was on November 20th, 1947. As CBS began to sustain the show’s cost, they indicated they were no longer interested in offering Suspense to an alcohol brand. William Spier’s last date with the production was January 24th, 1948.

Suspense was one of the premier programs of the Golden Age of Radio (aka old-time radio), and advertised itself as "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." It was heard in one form or another from 1942 through 1962. There were approximately 945 episodes broadcast during its long run, over 900 of which are extant in mostly high-quality recordings. Suspense went through several major phases, characterized by different hosts, sponsors and director/producers. There were a few rules which were followed for all but a handful of episodes: Protagonists were usually a normal person suddenly dropped into a threatening or bizarre situation. Evildoers must be punished in the end. The program made only occasional forays into science fiction and fantasy. Among its science fiction entries were "The Man who Went Back to Save Lincoln" (a time travel fantasy), and an adaptation of "Donovan's Brain".THIS EPISODE:February 7, 1948. CBS network. "Donovan's Brain". Sustaining. The classic tale of the mad scientist and his "brain in the bottle." The story was previously produced on "Suspense," as two half hour programs, on May 18 and May 25, 1944 (see cat. #245 and #61158). John McIntire (doubles), Robert Montgomery (host, performer), William Johnstone, Wally Maher, Jeanette Nolan, Joseph Kearns (announcer, performer), Curt Siodmak (author), Robert L. Richards (adaptor), William Spier (producer, director, editor), Lucien Moraweck (composer), Lud Gluskin (conductor), Burne Surrey (sound effects), Bob Anderson (sound engineer). 61:28.
