In episode #78, we discussed Tim Maia's album Racional Volume 1, released in 1975. By 1974, Tim Maia had become deeply involved with Cultura Racional, a spiritual philosophy he believed could "save humanity" through the teachings found in Universo em Desencanto. This belief consumed him to the point where he temporarily gave up drinking, smoking, and drugs, and began dressing in all-white, cult-like attire. Despite the controversy, the music is now recognized as some of the most spiritually funky and innovative ever recorded in Brazil. With the album nearly finished, he revoked his contract with RCA Victor, secured the master tapes, and rewrote all the original lyrics to reflect the teachings of Cultura Racional. He founded his own independent label to release the album, Seroma Discos, which features six full songs, three spoken-word vignettes focused on the book's message, and one track in English aimed at reaching an international audience. (S4 Ep 17) Nina Simone- Sings the Blues (RCA)Released 1967, Recorded December 19-January 5, 1967Nina Simone Sings the Blues is a powerful, emotionally raw album that marked a significant shift in Nina Simone's career. Her first release with RCA Victor showcases her deep connection to the blues tradition, drawing influence from legends like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. With tracks like "Do I Move You?" and "Backlash Blues," inspired by Langston Hughes, Simone's music captures the racial tensions and personal struggles of the 1960s. Although it didn't chart highly, the album's authenticity and emotional depth solidified her place as one of America's greatest musical voices. The album blends jazz, blues, gospel, and soul, with Simone's poignant piano work and powerful vocals leading the way. Tracks like "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and "Real Real” showcase her mastery of the genre and her unapologetic, bold musical style, influencing future artists like Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill.Signature Tracks: "My Man's Gone Now,"  "Backlash Blue,"  "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Full Albums YouTube  Spotify Playlists      YouTube Spotify

Episode 151 Chapter 12, The History of Audio Recording Technology. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast.   Playlist: THE HISTORY OF AUDIO RECORDING TECHNOLOGY   Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:30 00:00 1.     Leon Scott “Au Clair de la Lune” (1860). Phonautograph. One of about 50 recordings made around 1860 by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's on his invention, the Phonautograph that were digitally restored in 2008 by the First Sounds collaborative. These were created using the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's virtual stylus technology, which sought to track the wavy lines scratched on soot-covered paper as though they were standard record grooves. 00:20 01:38 2.     Alice J. Shaw, an improvised whistling performance (1888) from an Edison Records cylinder recording. 02:13 01:58 3.     George J. Gaskin, “Drill Ye Terriers Drill” (1896) from an E. Berliner's Gramophone shellac disc. 01:24 04:10 4.     Sousa's Band, “Happy Days In Dixie” (1897) from an E. Berliner's Gramophone shellac disc. 01:43 05:36 5.     Emperor Franz Joseph, short message recorded on Valdemar Poulsen's Telegraphone (1900). Early magnetic wire recording. Recording made without microphone. 00:09 07:18 6.     Sousa's Band, “The Mosquito Parade” (1904) from Columbia Records shellac disc. Note the higher fidelity of the instruments compared to earlier recordings on disc, recorded without electrical microphones but optimizing the use of acoustic horns for sound intake. 02:54 07:28 7.     Noble Sissle (vocals) and Eubie Blake (piano), medley of popular songs (1923). Recording using onto an early sound film using the Phonofilm process invented by Lee de Forest. 06:51 10:22 8.     Paul Whiteman And His Concert Orchestra, “Rhapsody In Blue” (1924) from an RCA Victor shellac disc. This is an acoustically recorded version of this piece, without the benefit of vacuum tube amplification or electrical microphones. Compare to the 1927 version (next), also by Whiteman, produced using electrical recording. 09:06 17:12 9.     Paul Whiteman And His Concert Orchestra, “Rhapsody In Blue” (1927) from RCA Victor, His Master's Voice shellac disc. An electrical recording using vacuum tube amplification and electrical microphones. 08:59 26:30 10.   Paul Hindemith, “Trickaufnahme” (excerpt) (1930), an experiment in turntablism using turntable discs to both record, mix, and playback the result. 00:58 35:28 11.   BBC, “Pieces of Tape” excerpt of a program (1933) produced by editing together segments recorded previously using the Blattnerphonesteel tape recorded that used a magnetic process. This was the first audio recording assembled using tape editing. A dozen years prior to the available of magnetic tape, edits made to steel tape had to be made by spot welding. 05:29 36:28 12.   Sidney Bechet, “Blues of Bechet” (1941) from an RCA Victor shellac disc. An early example of overdubbing/multitracking. Bechet played every instrument on this track, including the piano, clarinet and soprano saxophone. Each instrument was recorded onto a new master disc and mixed on another disc to create the final recording. 01:57 41:56   Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. A combination of samba, brass, keyboards, and guitar "rockin'" beats, "Mais Kriola" is the ultimate reference to what is referred to as samba-rock. The album was released by RCA Victor, with a stellar featuring musicians, which did not prevent it from becoming a commercial failure. The song traversed time, though, and is an instant in Brazilian-theme parties all over the country even today.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2805: Elvis Presley Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 8 January 2025 is Elvis Presley.Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), known mononymously as Elvis, was an American singer and actor. Known as the "King of Rock and Roll", he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Presley's energized performances and interpretations of songs, and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, brought both great success and initial controversy.Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi; his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 13. His music career began there in 1954, at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on guitar and accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who managed him for the rest of his career. Presley's first RCA Victor single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the US. Within a year, RCA Victor would sell ten million Presley singles. With a series of successful television appearances and chart-topping records, Presley became the leading figure of the newly popular rock and roll; though his performative style and promotion of the then-marginalized sound of African Americans led to him being widely considered a threat to the moral well-being of white American youth. In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, he relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. Presley held few concerts, however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood films and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. Some of Presley's most famous films included Jailhouse Rock (1957), Blue Hawaii (1961), and Viva Las Vegas (1964). In 1968, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed NBC television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world, Aloha from Hawaii. However, years of prescription drug abuse and unhealthy eating severely compromised his health, and Presley died unexpectedly in August 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42.Presley is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sale estimates ranging from 500 million records to over a billion worldwide. He was commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, rock and roll, rockabilly, rhythm and blues, adult contemporary, and gospel. He won three Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame. He holds several records, including the most RIAA-certified gold and platinum albums, the most albums charted on the Billboard 200, the most number-one albums by a solo artist on the UK Albums Chart, and the most number-one singles by any act on the UK Singles Chart. In 2018, Presley was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:58 UTC on Wednesday, 8 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Elvis Presley on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

M8 Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child  (Fats Waller) Rec. 9/23/1943, FATS WALLER PLAYS, SINGS AND TALKS, Jazz Treasury JT-1001, 1956 ABOUT THE ARTIST Today's show features the LATE GREAT Thomas Wright Waller, a jazz pianist and organist, composer and singer, born in New York City in 1904  The 7th of 11 children, his mother was a musician, and his father was a trucker and pastor in NYC.  Fats started playing piano when he was 6. He played the organ at his father's church at age 10. PAUSE He was home-schooled early-on by his mother and worked in a grocery store. He quit high school after just one semester at age 15 to work as an organist at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem. PAUSE At the Lincoln Theater, he earned $32 a week.  That was 1929.  He became known as “Fats Waller” because he was big -- both in body and in mind.  PAUSE Fats Waller laid some of the building blocks for what is NOW ‘modern jazz piano'. He popularized the use of The stride piano style,  which is widely used by jazz pianists today. He toured internationally and two of his biggest hits were Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose. PAUSE You are listening to Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by  Fats Waller) Recorded back in 1943.PAUSE Waller copyrighted over 400 songs. He probably composed many more, but, when he was in financial difficulty, he would sell songs to other writers and performers, who would not acknowledge the real composer, claiming the songs as their own.   Today's podcast features Fats Waller and a few of his SOLO piano and organ compositions that were recorded between the years 1926 and 1943, or from the age of 22 to 39.  Some of these songs are not available today, except where they are rediscovered - - - on my old and treasured Fats Waller record collection! SHOW PLUG - SHOW PLUG - DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL ! ! BIT BUCKET Waller is also credited with his composition and performance work in Broadway Musicals. Waller is perhaps the FIRST BLACK composer to write the score and perform for a mostly all-white show on Broadway. That was the 1943 Broadway musical EARLY TO BED, produced by Richard Kollmar – the Broadway Flyer for EARLY TO BED reads “Music by Thomas (“Fats”) Waller”. . M1 M1 Squeeze Me  (Thomas Waller) Rec. 2/14/1926, FATS WALLER EARLY UNDISCOVERED SOLOS, Riverside Records RLP 12-103, 1955 (2:55) Our first recording is titled “SQUEEZE ME” It's a piano solo, and the composer and performer is Thomas Waller. He is not billed as “Fats” Waller yet, as he is not that unusually large at the young age of 22. This song SQUEEZE ME was recorded for production of piano rolls in 1926, making this among Waller's EARLIEST recordings. Waller recorded his piano solos for the production of Piano Rolls between 1926 and 1927.These rolls operate on player pianos. Insert the roll, and the piano plays the song. PAUSE The player piano is a specialty item, affordable by the wealthy, and not a great way to release new music to the masses. Decades later, in 1955,

Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers By November of 1944 Suspense was pulling a rating of 10.4. There were now more than eight million people tuning in. Roma wines was satisfied as Suspense was providing stiff competition to The Frank Morgan Show running opposite on NBC Thursday nights at 8PM eastern time. On November 9th Lena Horne guest-starred in a Robert L. Richards script called “You Were Wonderful” about the murder of a nightclub singer in South America. Horne is the visiting American singer intent on solving the crime. Lena Horne was born on June 30th, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. Both sides of her family were multi-racial with both African and Native American heritage. Her father Teddy was a one-time owner of a restaurant and hotel while her mother Edna was an actress with a traveling theater troupe. As a young girl Lena's father left the family to move to Pittsburgh, while Lena traveled with her mother around the country before returning to New York City when she was twelve. Lena dropped out of high school at sixteen and joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club. In 1935 she made her first screen appearance as a dancer in Cab Calloway's musical short Jitterbug Party. She got married in 1937, but soon separated from her husband, first touring with bandleader Charlie Barnet in 1940 before returning to New York to work at Cafe Society in Greenwich Village. She soon replaced Dinah Shore as vocalist on NBC's The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street and recorded with Henry Levine and Paul Laval, in June 1941 for RCA Victor. Horne then left New York City for Hollywood, being hired to perform in a Cotton Club-style revue for Cafe Trocadero on the Sunset Strip. In 1942, when she became the first African-American with a major studio contract, it was with the understanding that she wouldn't be obligated to portray servants—a condition that handicapped her entrée into mainstream Hollywood movies. She soon appeared in the films Panama Hattie, Cabin in the Sky, Stormy Weather, Thousands Cheer, Swing Feever, Broadway Rhythm, and Two Girls and a Sailor. With the exceptions of Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, Lena's early screen appearances were often designed as standalone musical numbers that could easily be cut out in prejudice Southern markets unaccepting of African American performers. Horne's Suspense appearance was big news. Both Spier and his wife Kay Thompson, a friend who worked with her at MGM, pressed the movie studio to allow her to headline the show. Network executives at CBS were concerned that Roma might pull its contract if Southern stations didn't want to air the program. Thompson agreed to appear as Horne's uncredited backup singer in three musical numbers, which Thompson arranged. MGM's publicity department got to work and given the unfortunate day's climate, Horne's appearance was heralded as one of the more daring and successful half hours of network drama at the time. She is the first and only African American to headline Suspense. “It was an event of terrific importance to Lena,” noted Movieland magazine, “for the first time a performance of hers was judged on merit alone; she was announced only as the star of the play, without reference to her race.” Spier noted that in the studio, Lena “seemed so poised, so sure of herself and her every speech, so business-like in her approach to the role.” However when she grabbed his hand for encouragement, she was ice cold. Part of it was performance nerves, but a lot of it came from the anxiety of getting the chance to publicly justify her talent. Horne later said, “Bill was marvelous and intelligent. Anyone married to Kay would have to be strong.” It was an especially memorable and proud evening for members of the African-American community who were glued to their radios in record numbers.

This podcast is about Huddie William Ledbetter. Better known by his stage name Lead Belly, was one of the most celebrated folk and blues singers of his time. His most popular songs "Goodnight, Irene", "Midnight Special", "Cotton Fields", became American classics. Lead Belly was celebrated for his songwriting skills, strong vocals, and virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar. He's a Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Lead Belly was born in 1888, and faced many hardships as a young African-American growing up in the Jim Crow South, serving several prison sentences for murder, attempted homicide, and assault. But Lead Belly spent his time behind bars, performing concerts for his fellow inmates and perfecting his craft. Once he got out for good, Lead Belly was given a radio show, and signed a contract with RCA Victor, one of the biggest record companies at the time. You will hear 3 episodes of the Leadbelly Show on New York Radio Station WNYC in 1940, one with special guest, legendary folk singer Woodie Guthrie. You'll also hear Lead Belly perform on the show, This Is Jazz in 1947, just 2 years before his death. More at http://krobcollection.com

He passed away on June 1st 2000. Here's a glimpse into his remarkable journey and some of the things each day this week we'll dive into.Early Years: Tito Puente was born in New York City's Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents. His father worked at a razorblade factory, and Tito initially took piano lessons. However, an ankle injury led him to switch to percussion, drawing inspiration from jazz drummer Gene Krupa. Puente's talent blossomed with his drumming lessons, and in the '40s he joined the Machito Orchestra when their drummer was drafted for World War II. This was his big break, and Puente played with them until he was also drafted into the Navy. After the war, Puente went to the Julliard School of Music on the G.I. Bill to study music and orchestration, and in 1948 he formed his own band and began developing his distinctive performance style.Career:  Tito Puente was known for his blending of Latin and jazz sounds, for placing percussion in the spotlight, and for celebrating the music with dancing and joy during his performances. His band became a regular sound at the Palladium Ballroom, where the Tito Puente Orchestra packed in the crowds and helped popularize mambo. Over the years he became known as "El Rey," the king of mambo music, and he collaborated with many other major performers, including Celia Cruz. Puente began recording with RCA Victor in the 1950s. He continued to record, collaborate, and perform for the next several decades. In the 1990s, he played himself in the movie, Mambo Kings, which helped drive a renewed awareness of his music. When he died at age 77, he was still regularly performing.Legacy: Tito Puente's influence transcends borders. His compositions continue to resonate, and his virtuosity lives on. Whether you're dancing to his beats or appreciating his melodies, Tito Puente's legacy has been recognized in many ways. He received five Grammy Awards during his lifetime, as well as a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; among other honors, he also received honorary degrees, presidential recognition, and the Key to New York City.Tune in tomorrow for part 2 of celebrating the life and music of Tito Puente.Support the show

569. We welcome Jeroen Dewulf back to the podcast to discuss his new book, Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America's First Black Christians. "This volume examines the influence of African Catholics on the historical development of Black Christianity in America during the seventeenth century. Dewulf's analysis focuses on the historical documentation of Afro-Atlantic Catholic rituals, devotions, and social structures. Of particular importance are brotherhood practices, which were critical in the dissemination of Afro-Atlantic Catholic culture among Black communities, a culture that was pre-Tridentine in nature and wary of external influences. These fraternal Black mutual-aid and burial society structures were critically important to the development and resilience of Black Christianity in America through periods of changing social conditions." "Jeroen Dewulf (born 1972 in Nieuwpoort, Belgium) is a Belgian scholar specializing in Dutch culture, the Dutch language, German Studies, slavery and African-American culture, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies. Benny Goodman's orchestra was the first big band that I ever listened to. But I kept reading about his rival, Artie Shaw. So I bought a vinyl two record set called This is Artie Shaw. Well, I was just knocked out with those 1938 recordings. Today we will continue with part three of the Complete RCA Bluebird Recordings of Artie Shaw. We are now in Volume 5 which includes the period shortly before the start of World War II. Artie was in California during this time and was including a string section with his orchestra which gave the recordings a different sound. Billboard introduced the first-ever pop music chart on 4th January, 1936. Catering to jukebox operators, rather than everyday music fans, the chart was an occasional magazine feature, listing top tracks from each of the major record labels based on sheet music sales, record sales, requests from band leaders, and mail-in requests to radio stations.  Big Band numbers dominated the chart, which evolved (as the record industry recovered from the Depression) to eventually recognise black music with the ‘Harlem Hit Parade', and Country music with the ‘Most Played Juke Box Folk Records' feature in the 1940s. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider the role of music pluggers in manipulating the charts; explain how Natalie Imbruglia's ‘Torn' caused compilers a major re-think in the 1990s; and reveal the all-time most popular title for a chart hit…  Further Reading: • ‘Billboard Charts History: How the Charts Evolved' (Billboard, 2019): https://www.billboard.com/pro/billboard-chart-history-evolution-milestones/ • 'The Development of National Record Charts – Pay for Play: How the Music Industry Works, Where the Money Goes, and Why' (University of Oregon): https://opentext.uoregon.edu/payforplay/chapter/chapter-10-the-development-of-national-record-charts/ • ‘Tommy Dorsey: I'll Never Smile Again' (RCA Victor, 1936): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd71pORWNVo Love the show?
