while preparing this week's sbow,  like many of you, I could not help but reflect on Shedeur Sanders' precipitous free-fall thru the NFL Draft, with the projected early-round pick sliding thru rounds 1-5, then doing a complete nose dive thru the UFL Draft before finally being selected in 3rd round of the 2025 Arena Football League draft. Despite Sanders' humiliation, this is an impressive achievement just the same given the AFL has been defunct since 2019. But Sanders' difficult weekend brought to mind so many of the challenges I face with this show every week. Impossibly high expectations. A cruel, callous media (to say nothing of the public) that cannot wait to micro-analyze even the tiniest of errors. And then of course, there's the irrational jealousy on the part of my alleged friends & colleagues in the online radio game. Much like Mr. Sanders, I'm a manufactured-motivation FACTORY over here. He'll persevere and if the same is true of myself, I'll be certain to TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT.

There are moments following a loss where purpose dwindles and the future seems hazy. Some speak of it after a death, others after an election or a divorce or a heartbreak. Jan shares the story of a woman who experienced the worst of humanity's evil and personal loss. Impossibly, she was the brightest spirit he ever encountered. She taught him: "Don't die before you're dead."

In 1984, John Fashanu, a black Englishman of Nigerian descent, signed with the British club: Millwall FC; an openly racist club at that time. The semi-official chant the supporters sing from the crowd is: ‘We are Millwall, No One Likes Us, No One Likes Us, We Don't Care, We are Millwall, From the Den'. (The Den is the name of their home ground) The supporters hated him, they abused him, they threw bananas at him, they threatened his life if he dare stay. Somehow, as time progressed - they came to adore him. Impossibly, he became the most beloved player at the club. ACESS VIDEO VERSION BELOW, PURE AUDIO ABOVE “Science can explain everything except us”: a joke or a koan? This is the humor of our guest today. Welcome to Season 11, Episode 2 of Thoth-Hermes podcast.  Today, Rudolf and Karin interview author Jeffery Kripal.  In July, Kripal's latest book “How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else” was released through University of Chicago Press.  In this conversation, Professor Kripal and our two hosts wrestle with the foundations of lexicon and concepts underlying contemporary dialogue around Flip-worthy alternative spiritual experiences, and the interaction with religion as an academic subject.  This is an excellent conversation to reflect on how we each personally describe our Magic, and why- regardless of alignment for or against the definitions ventured. Jeffrey Kripal entered formal study of religion in the 1980s, after a Catholic upbringing; he centered on exploring comparative mystical literature.  Kripal ultimately gained a home as a historian of comparative religions, spending time at Esalen Institute in California while teaching at Rice University in Texas. Noticing the “flatland” quality of religious scholarship, Kripal moved towards authorship around transcendent and alternative expressions of human spirituality.   Soaked in the humanities, Kripal articulates a longstanding interest in cultivating engagement between the study of anomalous or transcendent experience and pure sciences, in this STEM-centered culture.  Kripal celebrates that “the human being overflows itself” as “embodied consciousness” and is completely clear: “I am pro-science”.  He asserts this while fearlessly naming the Shadow of science: global warming, nuclear armament, and other successful, perilous products of science.  And put him down as an “AI skeptic”. Supernatural… superhuman… transhuman… posthuman… paranormal… occult… magic.  These are all English-language terms used in the attempt to describe the transcendent, mysterious, edgy aspects of our capacity as spiritual beings.  Along the way, Kripal challenges Science-centered academics to being to name their own anomalous experiences before the safety of retirement, and further for thinkers in general to move away from the habit of explaining away those events by returning to previously-disowned religious narratives. Do we speak of “angels” or “entities” when we encounter one?  And why?  Kripal is clear that he is at heart a “comparativist” and thereby intends to open people up to alternatives from default religious worldviews, while not necessarily advocating any given one as a “better” alternative.  This he includes as a larger part of his concepts of “thinking impossibly” and “thinking-with” other authentic seekers. He worked with Rice's special collections director to create and host the Archives of the Impossible, which is a collection of accounts detailing the supernatural, including thousands of firsthand abduction accounts, letters written to Whitley and Anne Strieber, once highly classified government remote reviewing files and has become one of the largest and most significant collections of research materials related to these marginalized and tabboed topics in the world. Jeff also organized the Archives of the Impossible conferences. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred, Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion, Kali's Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna and The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge. His present areas of writing and research include the articulation of a New Comparativism within the study of religion that will put “the impossible” back on the table again, a robust and even conversation between the sciences and the humanities, and the mapping of an emergent mythology or “Super Story” within paranormal communities and individual visionaries. Through my own personal lens, there have been a few really pivotal interactions with Jeff's work which have informed my own journey and work. But the cost, I've learned, is dear.  Trading potential for false modesty,  Dampening power with every apology,  Neglecting my impeccable edges  With every hedge. But then I remember  What the rabbis knew. They stretched wide a red silk thread.  At one end: Arrogance.  At the other: Not humility – but  Playing Too Small. They knew playing small was just arrogance by a different name.  Placing comfort above contribution.  Our gifts withdrawn from the world,  For the price of fitting in. ‘What if holding back is stealing?' So in the middle, they placed a pair of right-sized shoes.  Yours.  Mine.  The right-sizing that awaits us all. What, I wonder, will it take for you to grow into your right size  The one that seems Impossibly large, and  Obnoxiously loud? Clownish as these shoes seem now, prone to stumbling,  At first you'll feel the fool.  Some People will have Things To Say.  Some may even walk away.  (In this modesty-mad world, they're yet to clock  that claiming your shoes  does nothing to keep them from theirs.) But every now and then you wake up to the truth.  That it's the world that's wrong - not you.  These too-small shoes will no longer do. So take your credit where it's due.  And when no-one offers it – give yourself a spoon daily. Take your space  Trading in the apologies for gratitude. Minimise your emotions no more –  They too deserve to expand to the full. Fill your circle with champions  And learn to see yourself with the wonder of their eyes. And when you hit your stride, and weather whatever,  Give up the surprise. When those shoes once vast grow snug,  Be sure to celebrate well.  Acknowledge yourself, and your people, and the view. Gateway to the Temple: Homage to Lahaina ~ Flint Sparks At the entry gate of every temple, a great bell waits. When struck, a deep resonant call is sent out, A powerful sound, but something closer to gravity, Invisibly pulling us across the threshold into a sacred space, Toward the promise of the perfected love we secretly long for; A divine love which is equally terrifying As it beautifully consumes and nourishes us. On that Summer day in August there was no bell. No call was sent out; No signal, no warning announcing the impending destruction. Only the savage wind, Tearing down the dry, ragged slopes Carrying one small spark Which would destroy a town. And now we gather in safety at the blackened boundary, Not able to enter, although we long to help, Not able to turn away, even though the bearing witness is awful. Instead we find ourselves at this thin place between life and death, Called by the resonant silence of those who are gone And the compassionate cry arising from our own hearts. But isn't it always like this for us? Hesitating to enter the frightening places which could save us. Pausing, unable to move, Knowing we have to go there, to do what we have to do. Nidean settlers pray to their Divines and then take up their shovels to do the work of civil expansion. The “Bilats” are a conservative and reactionary force, aiming to return the Principality to its roots both literally and figuratively. They are tied to the Past. History, knowledge, stubbornness. Stel Nideo: Created the largest faith in the empire, and used that influence to shape (and surveil) mass culture. They take their names from favorite artistic works and have blended their bodies with a special concrete (and some respiratory cybernetics) that aids in their breathing. The Plough's primary purpose is to be Nideo's frontline unit, but it is as valuable after a fight as it is in one. It is used in the destruction and replacement of “old” or “neglected” locations with new Nideo bases and settlements, and as such serves a propagandistic function by demonstrating that “soldier” and “settler” are two sides of the same coin.
