At 10:50PM on D-Day, The Red Skelton Show took to the air with a final abbreviated episode before Skelton left for World War II. When his show debuted on October 7th, 1941 critics were skeptical. Skelton was a pantomimist. How could he succeed on radio? But he was soon getting laughs every eleven seconds and for three seasons more than twenty-five million people were tuning in as he pulled ratings in the 30s. His supporting cast of Lurene Tuttle, Ozzie, and Harriet Nelson were heavily featured. But then Skelton got divorced and lost his marriage deferment. The army drafted him in 1944. MGM and radio sponsor Raleigh Cigarettes tried to help with no avail. The Draft Board also turned down his request to join the Special Services branch for entertainers. This was questioned by some critics, who noted that he had worked tirelessly to entertain servicemen. Skelton's last radio program was on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. The next day the thirty-year-old Skelton was formally inducted as a private. Without its star, the program was discontinued until he could come back from the war. Skelton lost eighteen months of his career, eventually suffering a nervous breakdown in Italy, and having to be hospitalized for three months. He would be discharged in September of 1945.

Today on Part two of our interview with Sam Nelson on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk about what it was like being the son of Rick Nelson and grandson of Ozzie & Harriet Nelson about growing up, well, Nelson. On part one we discussed with Sam how he became the keeper of the flame for the family business as the archivist & producer for the TV show & new DVD box set The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. But on this episode, Sam opens up to us about all sorts of things. From the wonderful and exciting to the tragic and the spooky. Sam grew up very much the stuff of tabloid fodder while just in elementary school. Imagine going to the supermarket and seeing your picture on the cover of People magazine or the National Enquirer. We get into it. We also get into some really terrific stuff as well. What was Rick Nelson favorite hobby? What was his favorite ice cream shop? A-ha…you are going to have to listen to part two for details on this hard hitting topic. Plus, we learn about the history and the ghostly stories surrounding the Nelson household that are the stuff of legend. Once owned by another very famous Hollywood actor, Sam tells us some truly bizarre and hair (not heir) raising tales of this haunted house in the Hollywood Hills. Evidently, a famous pop star owns it now. Again, you are going to have to take a listen to this second episode of our interview with Sam Nelson on the Rarified Heir Podcast to learn more. We promise, it's another all-encompassing, honest, raw and intense episode. Take a listen.
After Bob Hope's program signed off at 10:30PM eastern war time, The Red Skelton Show signed on. It debuted on Tuesday October 7th, 1941. By February of 1944 it was pulling a rating of 29.9. Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were heavily featured. Skelton was so supercharged that he couldn't do a pre-show warm up. It left his audience exhausted and practically catatonic during the main show. So Skelton reversed the formula and gave his fans an after-show. Among his peers it was considered the hottest comedy act in town. Lurene Tuttle, who later appeared with Ozzie and Harriet on their own show, also starred on The Red Skelton Show. For three seasons Skelton's popularity soared, but then he got divorced and lost his marriage deferment. The army drafted Skelton in 1944. MGM and radio sponsor Raleigh Cigarettes tried to help with no avail. The Draft Board also turned down his request to join the Special Services branch for entertainers. Skelton's last radio program was on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. The next day he was formally inducted as a private. Without its star, the program was discontinued until he could come back from the war. Words at War was an anthology of war stories, “told by the men and women who have seen them happen.” It was produced in cooperation with the Council on Books in Wartime, promising “stories of the battlefronts, of behind-the scenes diplomacy, of underground warfare, of the home front, of action on the seas.” Each show was to be “a living record of this war and the things for which we fight.” First taking to the air on June 24th, 1943 from New York, it was praised by Variety as “one of the most outstanding programs in radio”; by the New York Times as the “boldest, hardest-hitting program of 1944”; and by Newsweek as “one of the best contributions to serious commercial radio in many a year.” Despite airing at 11:30PM on Tuesdays, Words at War stimulated conversation and controversy throughout its two-year run. On Tuesday, February 8th 1944 a story on George Washington Carver was broadcast. When Words At War signed off at midnight, NBC broadcast a ninety minute program for the fourth war bond drive. It was part of an extended effort to raise funds. The night prior at midnight, Ben Grauer hosted this show over NBC.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, it's part one of our interview with Sam Nelson, son of the great Rick Nelson, nephew to David Nelson and grandchild of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson If you grew up in America in the 1950s The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet defined post War America. It was a massive hit and ran for 14 years. We take a deep dive into the restoration and recent release of the complete, 435 episode DVD box set of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Beginning as a radio show in the 1940s (I betcha didn't know that!) & coming to television in the early 1950s. The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet was the longest running, live action sitcom on American television until 2021 when It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia celebrated it's 15th year. To say that this show was part of the fabric of American life in the 1950s and today is part of it's lexicon would be an understatement. Perhaps no other show from that era is as well-known or beloved that didn't feature Lucy or The Beaver as this show. On this first of two episodes, we spoke with Sam about the interest and hard work in being the sole heir of the Nelson clan that not only wanted to make something of this show after decades of semi-neglect but put in the time, the effort and the sweat equity to bring it back. It's no small effort as Sam tells us how, why and what obstacles he had in making sure that people not only knew the name Ozzie & Harriet but knew the show again in 2024. Of course we speak about his father, entertainer & rock star Rick Nelson & uncle David Nelson who starred on The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet and how Rick, then known as Ricky, single handedly brought rock and roll into America's homes. It was Rick, with his matinee idol good looks and spot on singing voice that perhaps kept this show on the air long after it likely should have petered out. And this is a topic that particularly interested host Josh Mills as legacies and archives are something he has been dealing with every day of his life for the past decade and a half. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and this is Part One of our interview with Sam Nelson. Take a listen.

Bruce Belland's new book is called Icons, Idols and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band and boy, did he have adventures! Bruce founded The Four Preps while still in Hollywood High School. They became Ricky Nelson's backup band, co-starred in Gidget and The Adventures of Ozzy & Harriet and went on to score massive hits with 26 Miles Across The Sea, Big Man, and Down By The Station. In his book and on this episode, Bruce's storytelling is engaging and enlightening. He shares teen idol road stories, his Disneyland dream date with Annette Funicello (that devolved into a nauseous nightmare) his day on the set of a TV special with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney and Louis Armstrong, exactly why a wholesome boy singer would include in his book a chapter titled, One Dead Junkie and a Masturbating Monkey, how the love and wisdom of his minister father and sharp witted mother fortified his remarkable journey, and the powerfully poignant night of President Kennedy's assassination when The Preps gave voice to heartbreak at Ohio State University. Through it all, Bruce remains a student. He confides what he learned from Gene Kelly, Ozzy Nelson and George Burns and just how he embraces the blessing of encountering someone who knows more than you and opening yourself up to new lessons.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Killers of the Flower Moon, in theaters and Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe, a doc series on Prime.Path Points of Interest:Bruce BellandIcons, Idols, and Idiots of Hollywood: My Adventures in America's First Boy Band by Bruce BellandThe Edsel ShowThe Four Preps on WikipediaKillers of the Flower Moon - In TheatersDesperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe

Join host, Carl Amari, for a radio re-broadcast of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Featuring vocal talent by Ozzie Nelson and Harriet Hilliard.Considered to be one of America's longest running sitcoms, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet documented the life of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson as they raised their two sons, Ricky and David. The series was ultimately a huge television success, airing on ABC for a whopping 14 seasons, from October 3rd, 1952 to April 23rd, 1966. Though the television series is perhaps the most known iteration of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, the couple had originated the series over the airwaves. First appearing regularly on The Baker's Broadcast radio series from 1933 to 1938, one of Hollywood's most beloved couples were then prompted to build their own series based around their own family situation comedy, solidifying one of the greatest sitcom series to ever grace nationwide listeners.Originally airing on 07/20/1950, prepare to laugh until you cry in "Five Dollars Too Much Change," with Ozzie and Harriet Nelson!Enjoying The Film Detective? You can watch this episode here.Or connect with us here:FacebookInstagramTwitterYouTubeWant even more? George Morris is a well-known city council person in the town and tells his wife Kathy that she needs to be careful because there's a lot of gossip going around town with the women at the hair salon place but Kathy pays no attention to her husband's warnings and ends up seeing her former husband Allen behind his back but she is not cheating on him she's wanting Alan to paint a portrait of herself that he can put in City Hall and she knows that her ex-husband is the only one that can paint in the whole town and make it portrait the way she wants it. but once the details of her ex-husbands day unravel before her ears she has a plan set in motion. one day she tells her husband that a man is in their backyard trying to break in then her husband George ends up telling her that he's going to put security out there but she is reluctant and he does not do it until one night. Kathy ends up escaping the house and goes to the apartment building where her ex-husband Alan knows and the details of her crime become well-known who has set an officer outside her house because of the prowler lurking around their home. and it is called like let george do it. and in this next episode we find this a young woman name Francis who works in cabin inn for her stepfather is having for many years her mother is gone and her stepfather is the only one that cares but she has grown to resent her stepfather and ends up wanting him to leave her alone and let her live her life but unfortunately for her stepfather can't do that until she is 21 years of age so the young girl ends up thinking the only way to end this madness is by ending her stepfather's life so she ends up killing her stepfather and end up trying to go across country to escape her guilt but unfortunately for the young woman her guilt ends up catching up with her when a criminal from another state and a well-known doctor in the city find the man who has been murdered the doctor ends up telling me the radio station in the radio station relays the message throughout the whole town.she goes to another town and finds a burger joint and ends up stopping there but then her past ends up catching up with her yet again so she's on the run again until her crime ends up catching up with her. and it is called the highway escape. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet radio showWhen Red Skelton was drafted in March 1944, Ozzie Nelson was prompted to create his own family situation comedy. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet launched October 8, 1944, on CBS, it moved to NBC in October 1948, then made a late season switch back to CBS in April 1949. The final years of the radio series were on ABC (the former NBC Blue Network) from October 14, 1949, to June 18, 1954. In total 402 radio episodes were produced. In an arrangement that exemplified the growing pains of American broadcasting, as radio "grew up" into television, the Nelsons' deal with ABC gave the network the option to move their program to television. The struggling network needed proven talent that was not about to defect to the more established and wealthier networks like CBS or NBC.The Nelsons' sons, David, and Ricky did not join the cast until the radio show's fifth year (initially appearing on the February 20, 1949, episode, at ages 12 and 8, respectively). The two boys were played by professional actors prior to their joining because both were too young to perform. The role of David was played by Joel Davis from 1944 until 1945 when he was replaced by Tommy Bernard. Henry Blair appeared as Ricky. Other cast members included John Brown as Syd "Thorny" Thornberry, Lurene Tuttle as Harriet's mother, Bea Benaderet as Gloria, Janet Waldo as Emmy Lou, and Francis "Dink" Trout as Roger. Vocalists included Harriet Nelson, The King Sisters, and Ozzie Nelson. The announcers were Jack Bailey and Verne Smith. The music was by Billy May and Ozzie Nelson. The producers were Dave Elton and Ozzie Nelson. The show's sponsors included International Silver Company (1944–49), H.J. Heinz Company (1949–52) and Lambert Pharmacal's Listerine (1952–54).

In November of 1947, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship of Suspense. Roma's last episode was on November 20th, 1947. As CBS began to sustain the show's cost, they indicated they were no longer interested in offering Suspense to an alcohol brand. For the next five weeks Suspense shifted to Friday evenings live, coast-to-coast at 9:30PM eastern time. December 26th, 1947 was the last of those Fridays. Director William Spier chose Ozzie and Harriet Nelson to star as a husband and wife driven to despair by a hateful invalid uncle. It was called “Too Little To Live On,” and written by Robert L. Richards, who also wrote “The House in Cypress Canyon.” “Too Little To Live On” is a masterpiece in long-scene radio drama. The next week, Suspense began a new hour-long format, hosted by Robert Montgomery. William Spier's last date with the production was January 24th, 1948. He married June Havoc the next day. The Nelsons vacated their Sunday at 6PM time slot to take over the Friday at 9:30 position Suspense occupied here. Although their CBS rating climbed to 13.4 that season, in the fall Ozzie and Harriet Nelson left for NBC.

This week, Gunnar Nelson joins The Cowsills to share a story of perseverance and a can-do mindset. Gunnar Nelson is a singer-songwriter and musician who, with his twin brother Matthew Nelson, is a member of the multi-platinum-selling band Nelson.Entertaining was a family affair for Gunnar -- his father was pop star Ricky Nelson and his mother was actress Kristin Harmon, the sister of TV superstar Mark Harmon, while his paternal grandparents were bandleader Ozzie Nelson and singer Harriet Nelson. Gunnar, Paul, Susan, and Bob all share stories about making music with your family and having fun doing it. Gunnar dives into how music saved him, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the autobiographical album after the rain, and the authenticity in his new project.
A neat show today, starting with Gunnar Nelson of the rock band Nelson. Gunnar & his twin Matthew broke on the scene in 1990 with their "After The Rain" album (which came out during my DJ days at "The All-New, All-Hit B-103" in State College, PA). Their first single "(Can't Live Without Your) Love & Affection" went to #1. Other singles included the title track, "More Than Ever" and "Only Time Will Tell." Nelson is at the Sellersville Theatre this Friday 7/16 (6pm & 9pm) for "Ricky Nelson Remembered Starring Matthew & Gunnar Nelson" (info at st94.com). Ricky was their dad who had two #1 songs (Poor Little Fool in 1958 and Travelin' Man in 1961) and another 16 Top 10 songs. Nelson's grandparents were none other than Ozzie & Harriet Nelson of "The Ozzie & Harriet Show" which started on the radio in 1944 and added TV to the mix in 1952. It remains the longest-running live action sitcom in U.S. history by number of episodes aired. Ozzie Nelson was a bandleader and had a #1 hit entitled "And Then Some" in 1935. That #1, along with Ricky's two #1 songs and Nelson's #1 make them the only family to have a #1 song in each of three consecutive generations. Former NFL player & longtime Philadelphia broadcaster Garry "G" Cobb also checks in to talk Eagles football just ahead of training camp and to share thoughts about & life lessons learned from his father Jesse aka "Pops" who passed away recently. Whenever Garry joins the show, he always shares not only good football & sports knowledge but also insight and encouragement pertaining to family, character, and faith in God--all usually with a humorous tone woven throughout. We're glad for Garry's friendship and willingness to hop on the air periodically. You can check him out at www.gcobb.com. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sears Radio Theater was a radio drama anthology series which ran weeknightly on CBS Radio in 1979, sponsored by the Sears chain. Often paired with The CBS Radio Mystery Theater during its first season, the program offered a different genre of drama for each day's broadcast. In 1980, the program moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System and became the Mutual Radio Theater. The Mutual series broadcast repeats from the CBS run until September 1980, when a short season of new dramas was presented. Sears continued as a sponsor during the Mutual run. Monday was "Western Night" and was hosted by Lorne Greene. Tuesday was "Comedy Night", hosted by Andy Griffith. Wednesday was "Mystery Night" with Vincent Price as host. Thursday was "Love And Hate Night" with Cicely Tyson doing honors as host. Finally, Friday brought "Adventure Night", first hosted by Richard Widmark and later by Howard Duff and then by Leonard Nimoy. Actors heard on the series included Parley Baer, Mary Jane Croft, Howard Culver, John Dehner, Virginia Gregg, Janet Waldo, Vic Perrin, Hans Conried, Marvin Miller, Elliot Lewis, Jeff Corey, Lesley Woods, Robert Rockwell, Lurene Tuttle, Eve Arden, Keith Andes, Harriet Nelson, Alan Young, Tom Bosley, Marion Ross, Lloyd Bochner, Rick Jason, Frank Campanella, Toni Tennille, Arthur Hill, Dan O'Herlihy, Jesse White and Frank Nelson. It was produced and directed by Fletcher Markle and Elliott Lewis. The theme was composed and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Though less long-lived than NPR's Earplay or the Mystery Theater, it was an ambitious attempt to reinvigorate a neglected field. Like Earplay, it was broadcast in stereo.

As much as you want everyone to treat you fairly, as much as you try to treat others the way you want to be treated, someone is going to do you wrong. Sounds like a country song. When that happens, you are most likely going to be angry, hurt or both. That's natural and healthy. The big question is, “what then?” Do you spend hours, days, or weeks planning your revenge, or do you take a different tack?Harriet Nelson of “Ozzie and Harriet” fame suggests this: “Forgive all who have offended you, not for them, but for yourself.” Why, because anger and resentment have no effect on the person you're angry with, but they do a nasty number on you.Resentment and a desire for revenge play an important role in the world. Hatred gets passed down from generation to generation and becomes part of the fabric of the culture of a country. The on-going problems in the Middle East reflect an inability to replace anger and hatred with forgiveness.Marianne Williamson writes, “The practice of forgiveness is our most important contribution to the healing of the world.” Don Henley captured the toughest part of forgiveness in his song, “Heart of the Matter.” He sang, “I've been tryin' to get downto the heart of the matterBut my will gets weakand my thoughts seem to scatterBut I think it's about...forgivenessForgivenessEven if, even if you don't love me anymore.”Even if things don't go your way, the way to go is forgiveness.
Rick Nelson was the son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. They had a hit radio show in the 1940s and a popular TV show “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” from 1952 to 1966. In 1957, while Rick was on the TV show he recorded his first single for Imperial Records, “Be Bop Baby,” which sold more than a million copies. I mentioned the song to him during his appearance at the Playboy Club in Lake Geneva and we discussed his show biz career.

(14:08) David shares stories about the actors ‘that got away,’ – from the ones who really wanted it to those who threw the script in the trash, including: David Letterman, Barry Manilow, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Bruce Jenner, Sigourney Weaver, Jack Webb, Harriet Nelson, and Peter Graves. The two reminisce about the joy of being on set (19:19) and what it was like making a film that had the crew laughing during every scene, including the antics Leslie Nielsen played on Robert Hays (19:45). David shares how the most shocking lines made it into the script (21:10). Robert describes his crazy days while filming the disco scenes and running across the lot on his lunch breaks (21:45) and the craziness of filming in LAX airport. They share the irony of casting the actual airport announcers to read the red and white zone announcements (25:24) and the surprise of casting Ethel Merman in what was her final role (26:25). The two laugh about the fact that–no planes will air the movie and share their experiences being on an airplane, how they get recognized and their parents reactions (28:25). They continue on to discuss other casting choices such as how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became involved in the film (30:55) and how it changed his public persona and how Jonathan Banks got involved in the movie (32:46). Robert shares what it was like filming on a cold Malibu beach (33:23). David talks about what it was like adding jokes in the credits for the first time (35:13), the importance and beauty of Elmer Bernstein’s score (36:01) and the origin of the film’s poster – the iconic twisted plane (36:24). Scott asks how the movie relaunched Leslie Neilsen’s career and how he went from serious tv and films to wanting to do very funny comedies (37:18). They all laugh about how Universal fought them on the name against the name Airplane (40:25) and how it had to be called something different internationally. The three discuss if the film could be made today and would the jokes work (42:00) David and Robert share their favorite memories since the movie released including the funniest thing that’s happened at a Q & A (43:30), if they knew it would last 40 years (44:46), their families reactions to the film (50:30) and finally how it’s affected their careers (54:01). In November of 1947, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship of Suspense. Roma’s last episode was on November 20th, 1947. As CBS began to sustain the show’s cost, they indicated they were no longer interested in offering Suspense to an alcohol brand. For the next five weeks Suspense shifted to Friday evenings live, coast-to-coast at 9:30PM eastern time. December 26th, 1947 was the last of those Fridays. Director William Spier chose the comedy and musical team of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson to star as a husband and wife driven to despair by a hateful invalid uncle. William Spier’s last date with the production was January 24th, 1948.
For many, Nelson is the answer to a trivia question: What twin blonde guitar-playing brothers had a hit in 1990 with “Love and Affection”? Matthew Nelson acknowledges that his profile isn’t what it once was this week on “The 12 Songs of Christmas,” where he talks about This Christmas and This Christmas Too, companion albums that were released in 2015 and 2016. Each features the songs with a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks; songs that feature vocals on one album are instrumentals on the other, and vice versa. Matthew Nelson and his brother Gunnar are third generation in their family in the public limelight after their father, singer Ricky Nelson, and their grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, who had their own sitcom Ozzie and Harriet from 1952 to 1966. Matthew remembers Christmases with his family and talks about how he and Gunnar came to make not one but two Christmas albums, and why he considers “Blue Christmas” the hardest Christmas song to cover. The albums became part of a plan to do Christmas shows each year, and this year their Christmas tour starts on November 23 and runs through December 21. Go to their website for tour dates and tickets. After that conversation, host Alex Rawls talks about The Molly Burch Christmas Album by indie singer/songwriter Molly Burch. The new album is Burch’s third, and Rawls reviews it, talking about how it fits into her body of work and some of the smart musical choices she makes on the album. We also hear her unusual take on “Last Christmas” by Wham! If you’re listening to this episode here, please subscribe to 12 Songs through Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. That way, you don’t miss an episode and I have numbers to help convince artists and their managers that appearing on the podcast is a good idea. Those numbers also help advertisers see “12 Songs” as a way to reach their markets. It’s a win/win!
On November 18th, 1969 Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were guests of Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. During the segment, Ozzie told a funny story about the couple visiting Rutgers (his alma-matter) for a centennial parade.
Tracy Nelson made a deep impression on a youthful audience in the 1980s TV series Square Pegs and is still acting today. She’s also part of show business royalty: her father was Ricky Nelson, her grandparents were Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and her maternal grandparents were football star-turned-sportscaster Tom Harmon and leading lady Elyse Knox. (Yes, that means her cousin is Mark Harmon.) Tracy is proud of her heritage and Leonard and Jessie were only too eager to soak up all that history

This week on StoryWeb: Rick Nelson’s song “Garden Party.” For Julia, in honor of her birthday In 1972, my two-year-old sister could sing all the words to this Rick Nelson hit. Why she latched on to this particular song when it came on the car radio none of us will ever know – not even Julia. She would sit in her car seat – not one of the safety-conscious car seats of today – and practically dance in her seat, legs and arms bopping to the beat. So “Garden Party” has a special place in my memories. But there’s an interesting story to the song itself as well. Rick Nelson was, of course, one of two sons of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, famous stars of their own 1950s and 1960s television show, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. To be an Ozzie or a Harriet, to be a Ricky or a David, to be a Nelson meant that you were part of a wholesome, all-American family. The Nelsons epitomized the white picket fence dream of Eisenhower’s America. As a teen in the late 1950s, Ricky Nelson emerged as a rock-and-roll performer, with an emphasis on rockabilly. In short order, he became a teen idol. Though he officially changed his performance name to Rick Nelson in 1961 when he was 21, he would forever be known as “Ricky” by the many teen girls who had fallen in love with him. With the onset of Beatlemania, Rick Nelson’s music fell out of popularity. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was still making music, recording in the country-rock genre emerging at the time. But his new music was not catching on in quite the way he hoped. Things came to a head in 1971 when he performed at an oldies concert at Madison Square Garden. Other oldies artists – including Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Little Richard – played the show, which was intended to showcase the music of a bygone era. Wearing bell bottoms and a purple velvet shirt and sporting long hair, Nelson at first played “Be-Bop Baby,” “Hello, Mary Lou,” and other old hits, but when he launched into a country version of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women,” the audience booed him off the stage. Disgusted by what had happened at the show, he wrote “Garden Party,” weaving together references to musicians and songs performed at the concert. In an essay for Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song, his son Gunnar Nelson recalls: “After a lifetime of pretending to be a character he wasn’t – wearing the sweater on Monday on the set of Ozzie and Harriet after being a real rock star on the weekends – he was writing and performing for his own pleasure and satisfaction.” Gunnar says one of his most prized possessions is his father’s handwritten lyrics to “Garden Party,” featured at SongFacts, which includes extensive background on the song and on Rick Nelson’s career. Nelson offers reminisces about the song in a 1983 interview. I love that “Garden Party” tells a real story – and I also love that it allowed Rick Nelson to get the last laugh. Ironically, he is really known now mostly for this song – a tune about not having his music appreciated. Though he never regained his earlier popularity by the time he died in a plane crash in 1985 at age 45, it seems Rick Nelson had learned the real lesson from that experience at Madison Square Garden – to be true to yourself and to your creative vision. For me, though, this song will always conjure up images of my beloved little sister, her big brown eyes and long, curly brown hair, her pumping arms and legs, and her two-year-old voice exclaiming, “You see you can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself.” Visit thestoryweb.com/nelson for links to all these resources and to watch Rick Nelson play “Garden Party” on Midnight Special, hosted by Wolfman Jack.

Welcome to another episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site! On this program, Mike, George, and Smitty recall the days of dress codes. The time when we had strict dress codes in school. If you didn't conform to the dress codes, you were subject to punishment, either at school or at home! Shirts, hats, pants, and belts had to be just right. People would dress up for things that we consider routine today, such as going out to dinner, grocery shopping, attending sporting events, and traveling. We also look back at our first computers. Remember the early computers that weighed forty pounds, and looked like suitcases? Such brands as Tandy, Timex, and Osborne, large floppy disks, and acoustical modems that were very slow compared to today's technology, but seemed magically fast at that time period. It was the beginning of a technological revolution that many of us were a part of. Finally, we remember Shirley Temple, who passed away early in 2014. Her film career, and her later career in public service are recalled. She was beloved by generations as they watched the cute little girl with curls singing and dancing on screen. Join us as we say farewell to the Good Ship Lollipop. Our Retro-Commercials are for Keds sneakers, voiced by Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, and for Tandy Computers voiced by Bill Bixby. We'll be waiting for you here, on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!
Suzanne opens discussing Ryan Seacrest’s new reality show “Montecito” and then analyzes some hits before reviewing “The Seven Worst Reality Shows” to ever make it on the air...while Bob shares his passion for vinyl Rock ‘n Roll record albums. The conversation moves on to how Bob took advantage of his “inside track” deal with NBC Productions and his relationship with programming exec Brandon Tartikoff to pitch and sell a pilot for Time Out for Dad, which starred NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus and Harriet Nelson. Bob tells what it was like meeting Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus for the first time, and then how Butkus held his own as a comedic actor surrounded by first timers on a movie set. Bob recalls his meeting withHarriet Nelson who appeared in the show...while Suzanne lets it be known that she’s had a lifelong “thing” for Harriet’s son, famed rocker Ricky Nelson. We also hear about the casting process that discovered future TV star Johnny Galecki, star of the CBS-TV series The Big Bang Theory . Bob and Suzanne touch upon the fact that Time Out for Dad may have been ahead of its time, dealing with the challenges faced by a stay-at-home father married to a wife whose career is on the rise. They reminisce about working with Scarface star Paul Shenar on the pilot, as well as with the veteran crew members whom Bob spent time with, pumping them for their stories of “Old Hollywood”. Bob admits to being a “born marketer”, describing the story-point prop shoes that he shamelessly wrote into the show in hopes of breaking into the world of Nike’s Air Jordans, and then turns to the cruel odds of the TV pilot process as a project goes through the various phases of story-pitch-script-shoot...and then the dreaded decision-making that follows. The episode closes with the realities of network programming changes, as Bob gives his own definition of “failure” in the world of television.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet launched on CBS October 8, 1944, making a mid-season switch to NBC in 1949. The final years of the radio series were on ABC (the former NBC Blue Network) from October 14, 1949, to June 18, 1954.The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, an American radio and television series, was once the longest-running, live-action situation comedy on American television, having aired on ABC from 1952 to 1966 after a ten-year run on radio. Starring Ozzie Nelson and his wife, singer Harriet Hilliard (she dropped her maiden name after the couple ended their music career), the show's sober, gentle humor captured a large, sustaining audience, although it never rated in the top ten programs, and later critics tended to dismiss it as fostering a slightly unrealistic picture of post-World War II American family life. When Skelton was drafted, Ozzie Nelson was prompted to create his own family situation comedy. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet launched on CBS October 8, 1944, making a mid-season switch to NBC in 1949. The final years of the radio series were on ABC (the former NBC Blue Network) from October 14, 1949, to June 18, 1954. In an arrangement that amplified the growing pains of American broadcasting, as radio "grew up" into television (as George Burns once phrased it), the Nelsons' deal with ABC gave the network itself the right to move the show to television whenever it wanted to do it---they wanted, according to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, to have talent in the bullpen and ready to pitch, so to say, on their own network, rather than risk it defecting to CBS (where the Nelsons began) or NBC. Their sons, David and Ricky, did not join the cast until five years after the radio series began. The two boys felt frustrated at hearing themselves played by actors and continually requested they be allowed to portray themselves. Prior to April 1949, the role of David was played by Joel Davis (1944-45) and Tommy Bernard, and Henry Blair appeared as Ricky. Since Ricky was only nine years old when he began on the show, his enthusiasm outstripped his ability at script reading, and at least once he jumped a cue, prompting Harriet to say, "Not now, Ricky." Other cast members included John Brown as Syd "Thorny" Thornberry, Lurene Tuttle as Harriet's mother, Bea Benaderet as Gloria, Janet Waldo as Emmy Lou, and Dick Trout as Roger. Vocalists included Harriet Nelson, the King Sisters, and Ozzie Nelson. The announcers were Jack Bailey and Verne Smith. The music was by Billy May and Ozzie Nelson. The producers were Dave Elton and Ozzie Nelson.
First show: Mar 3, 1980 Original shows: 103 Last show: Dec 10, 1980 Number of programs aired including new and repeats: 210 Hosts: Lorne Greene, Andy Griffith, Vincent Price, Cicely Tyson, Leonard Nimoy In December 1979 the Mutual Broadcasting System acquired the Sears Radio Theater renaming it, the MUTUAL Radio Theater. It retained the same format as before with the same theme for different nights of the week. Lorne Greene remained host for Monday's Western night, Andy Griffith handled Tuesday's Comedy, Vincent Price still was host for Mystery on Wednesdays, Cicely Tyson did Love on Thurs- day, while Leonard Nimoy was now the Friday night Adventure host. As before the series aired week nights, Monday through Friday. The Mutual Radio Theater debuted Mar 3, 1980 and was to run for 13 weeks on almost 300 stations. The shows were then to be repeated over the summer and fall. It proved to be fairly successful and another 8 weeks of original programs were added; this was followed by another 8 weeks of repeats. The series was broadcast in stereo, making it the only commercial radio network drama program in the nation to use this technology at the time. Great writers were employed for this series including Arch Oboler and Norman Corwin. Good choices were made when it came to cast members. Old familiar voices and names included Janet Waldo, John Dehner, Vic Perrin, Mary Jane Croft, Hans Conried, Marvin Miller, Parley Baer, Elliot Lewis, Jeff Corey, Virginia Gregg, Lesley Woods, Robert Rockwell and Lurene Tuttle. Then from movies and TV - Eve Arden, Keith Andes, Harriet Nelson, Aan Young, Tom Bosley and Marian Ross, Lloyd Bochner, Rick Jason, Frank Campanella, Toni Tennille, Arthur Hill, Dan O'Herlihy, Jesse White and Frank Nelson. A curious note: Many collectors and vendors list a total of 104 broadcasts. Apparently what was done by them was to count a repeat of "The Ship", first broadcast on March 7, 1980 as another show when it was aired again during the first 13 week cycle (May 23, 1980). Please note - - The previous edition of this log indicated some difficulty in establishing show titles for the weeks begining July 7, 1980 and July 14, 1980. The mystery has been solved with the able assistance of Mr. Bryan Wright. Thank you, Bryan! Mr. Rick Woodward and Mr. Shawn A. Wells offered additional audio copies which were gratefully accepted. Thank you, gentlemen!
