Every now and then, a conservation opportunity comes along that you can't pass up. The Western NY Land Conservancy (WNYLC) is currently in a race to permanently protect the Bear Lake Preserve, 311 acres of undeveloped shoreline, mature forest, and an array of critical wetland habitats linked to the Lake.To break down what makes this property so special, the guys hit the trail with WNYLC Stewardship Director Josh Balisteri. He gives them a tour of the property, discussing the history and ecology of Bear Lake, the historical and global crisis of wetland loss, and why we need to start viewing the Great Lakes ecosystem through the lens of crucial "inland coasts."Head over to wnylc.org/bearlake to check out maps of the new preserve and support their work! This episode was recorded at Bear Lake in Stockton, NY (and Pomfret, NY) on May 18, 2026.Episode Notes and LinksLucy and Bear Lake:During the episode, Bill boldly threw out a bit of local lore suggesting that WNY's favorite daughter, Lucille Ball, once stayed at a cottage on Bear Lake. He diligently searched online for any evidence that this was true, but came up empty. Lucy did grow up on the shores of nearby Chautauqua Lake in Celoron and spent many summers during the peak of her popularity escaping to Chenango Lake in eastern NY, but there is no official record of her hiding out at Bear Lake. Sorting Out Our Flight Paths: Later in the conversation, Bill referenced Darryl McGrath's excellent book Flight Paths: A Field Journal of Hope, Heartbreak, and Miracles with New York's Bird People and misidentified Hemlock Lake as one of the state's first eagle hacking (establishment) sites. While Bill was correct in remembering that Hemlock Lake was mentioned in the book, he was confused about the context. In reality, Hemlock Lake played a far more poignant role: it was the home of the very last known native nesting pair of bald eagles in New York State. By the late 1970s, chemical contamination from DDT had devastated the population, and that lonely Hemlock Lake pair was all that remained of our national bird in the entire state. (The pioneering hacking program Bill was thinking of launched nearby at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge). Why the South Shore of Bear Lake Stayed Wild: A major piece of that puzzle comes down to local history: from the 1920s through the 1970s, the land was home to a vibrant YMCA camp, and local authors Bob and Anne Deming (who Josh mentioned as key people in aiding the effort to save Bear Lake) published a book mapping out the camp's history. Originally inspired by a single chapter in their debut book, A History of Bear Lake (recently updated and re-released), they dove deeper into the archives to publish Camp in the Woods, a collection of photos and first-hand accounts from nearly 500 former campers and staff members. What if reality isn't something happening around you? What if it's actually responding to you? In this fascinating Dead Talk, Christy brings in renowned channel and author Jane Roberts and visionary physicist David Bohm. Together, they share with us a radically different way of understanding consciousness, manifestation, choice, and the nature of experience. They reveal why life is not a fixed world unfolding independently of you, but a living field of possibilities shaped by perception, expectation, attention, and participation. Along the way, they explore probable realities, the illusion of separation, the interconnected nature of the universe, and why even your thoughts, fears, hopes, and assumptions are participating in the experiences you call your life. If you've ever wondered whether reality is more fluid than it appears, whether consciousness plays a larger role than science has traditionally acknowledged, or whether there is a deeper intelligence woven into everyday experience, this conversation will challenge the way you see yourself and the world around you. The most important question raised in this episode is not: "What do I want to create?" It's: "What am I already participating in?" Once you understand the difference, you'll never look at reality the same way again. Earlier this week, Christy and I appeared on the Recover Your Soul podcast and Christy brought in Lucille Ball and Vincent Van Gogh. Brad Crowell 0:01 Fuck yeah. Lesley Logan 0:02 Get ready for some wins. Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 0:47 Hello. Be It babe. How are you? Oh my gosh. Welcome to the last FYF. We had a fifth FYF. This may how I mean, so it's kind of fun when there's five, because we get to celebrate you for an extra you get an extra chance to find another reason to celebrate a win in a month, right? Like you had five Fridays five times to find someone to celebrate. I hope you're doing this every single day. But honestly, if you just do it on Fridays, that's going to be great. Did you listen to last week? It was talking about how to build confidence. It was so good. Okay, so something inspirational, your win, my win, and a mantra that's it. We're just gonna keep it tight. Keep it quick. Here it is. Lucille Ball. Love yourself first, and everything falls into line. You really have to love yourself first to get anything done in this world. You really do. You really do. Especially with everything that's going on, you have to love yourself first. It matters. It changes the way people love themselves around you. It's a bubble of influence. Lesley Logan 1:42 Okay, your win. This one. We have two from @amandalgpilates. So I got a Friday the 13th flash tattoo because adults need stickers and they make me happy. Well, I too, have some adult stickers, and I agree. I love them. I got a few flash tattoos as well from the last Friday the 13th. And I love them very much. They're called little freckles, like I'm in brown ink. So they actually like because if I was born with a star freckle and a heart and then you also sent in, one of my clients told me that coming to my classes has been saving her mental health. Whoa. Huge, huge, huge. That's a huge win, right? Huge win. Look at the effort like look at how you're changing her life. Whatever you're doing is making them want to keep coming, keep coming when they've got so much going on. I love that so much. Lesley Logan 2:30 Okay, my win is, okay. So here's the deal. My bestie and I are on a road trip from Las Vegas to Hollywood, Florida, by ourselves. So I don't have Brad driving. I had to drive. She has to drive. We're doing it together. It's really exciting because, like, we've always wanted to go on a vacation together, and we're like, let's go. Where should we go? What should we do? And honestly, like, this is quite cool, even though I'm doing tons of road trips. I've done this route-ish before, and I'm doing something similar in August. Like to do it with her means, like, one, I'm not teaching. Two, we get to just like, enjoy ourselves and have a great time and and have time away from the rest of the world. And like, you know, usually when we hang out together, our husbands are there too. And, like, they often go off and do their own thing. But like, just nice seven days, just the two of us. I'm super stoked. I'm super excited. I and you're hearing this while I'm on it. And so anyways, we're probably in New Orleans right now, and then I actually get to spend a couple days in New Orleans, and instead of just like a meal, I could do like five meals. So I'm super excited about that. So just why is this a win? Because two really busy people planned time and money away from their lives and their family and their routines to be together, and that's a win. You can do it too. You don't have to do a road trip with your bestie, but do the thing that you and your bestie said you're gonna do, and then send it in to the beitpod.com/questions so we can celebrate your wins, because you are amazing. You're doing great work, taking care of yourself, prioritizing yourself, loving yourself first, is like the thing, the secret to life. So thank you. Be it, babe. Lesley Logan 3:59 Here is your mantra, although we could just have Lucille Ball's be a mantra. I fully embrace all parts of me. I fully embrace all parts of me. You fully embrace all parts of you, Be It babe. Yes, you do. All right, go Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 4:16 That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. Hollywood And Horsepower Show with Mark Otto Guest, Michael Blowen From the Silver Screen to the Stables: Michael Blowen on Hollywood's Golden Secrets Hollywood & Horsepower The Story Behind the Story: From Cinema Legends to Thoroughbred Stables Mode B: Editorial Abstract Guest Spotlight: Michael Blowen Former Boston Globe entertainment writer who transitioned from interviewing A-list stars to founding Old Friends Farm, the world's largest thoroughbred retirement sanctuary. Golden Era Chronicles ✦The Stewart Lesson: Jimmy Stewart sent handwritten "Red Envelope" thank-you notes to fans, treating them as friends, not customers. ✦Nicholson's Code: Jack Nicholson valued Blowen because he never acted as a "go-between" in a town built on transactions. ✦The Casablanca Legacy: Insights from writer Julius Epstein on the organic creation of iconic lines like "Round up the usual suspects." #OldHollywood #ThoroughbredRetirement #Journalism #Casablanca Key Quote "The horses are like my movie stars now... we make sure they have a gentle landing and the respect they've earned." Old Friends Farm Location: Georgetown, KY Mission: Dignified retirement for racing legends. Star Resident: "Academy Award" (Donated by Angie Dickinson). Featured Legends • Frank Sinatra • Lucille Ball • Bette Davis • Walter Matthau • Jimmy Stewart • Jack Nicholson Source: Hollywood and Horsepower Podcast • May 14, 2026 Read Time: 52 min audio Introduction In this episode of Hollywood and Horsepower, host Mark interviews Michael Blowen, the legendary Boston Globe critic who transitioned from interviewing movie stars to founding the world's largest thoroughbred retirement farm. The conversation explores the "human" side of Hollywood icons and the shared DNA between the film industry and horse racing. Detailed Summary The Evolution of Hollywood Access and Journalism Michael Blowen reflects on his tenure as an entertainment writer for the Boston Globe during a period he describes as the transition from "old Hollywood" to the new. Unlike the modern era of publicist-controlled phone interviews, Blowen was often sent on-location to observe movie sets firsthand. He notes that being physically present allowed him to witness the authentic friction and "fights" that occur during production, providing a level of reporting that is impossible in today's highly managed media environment. He views his current work with horses as a natural extension of his career, remarking that his retired thoroughbreds are his current "movie stars". The Jimmy Stewart Protocol During an interview, Jimmy Stewart revealed a stack of red envelopes on his desk—handwritten thank-you notes for fans who sent him birthday cards. "These people are not customers... they are your friends, and you should treat them that way." Iconic Friendships and Behind-the-Scenes Lore The discussion highlights several intimate anecdotes involving Hollywood royalty. Blowen shares a transformative lesson in humility from Jimmy Stewart regarding the importance of treating fans as "friends," a philosophy Blowen later adopted at his farm. He also recounts humorous and poignant moments with Jack Nicholson, who valued Blowen's friendship because he never acted as a "go-between" in a town built on transactional relationships. Other stories include the brilliance of the Epstein brothers—the writers of Casablanca—and the business foresight of Lucille Ball, who greenlit Star Trek and Mission Impossible against her board's wishes. The "Fever Pitch" Incident and Forging Bonds Blowen details a unique encounter with director Richard Brooks following a scathing review Blowen wrote for the film Fever Pitch. After a heated phone call filled with "every curse word in the world," Blowen challenged Brooks to a face-to-face interview. This confrontation led to a deep, lasting friendship, illustrating Blowen's belief that the "curtain dropping" allows one to truly know the people behind the fame. He notes that both the movie and horse businesses are remarkably small, interconnected worlds where reputation is everything. Old Friends Farm: A Gentle Landing Champion CareRetirement for Derby Winners Public AccessFace-to-face with Legends Founded by Michael Blowen in Georgetown, KY, to ensure thoroughbreds receive the respect they've earned after their racing careers end. Old Friends Farm and the Legacy of Thoroughbreds The final segment focuses on Blowen's current mission: Old Friends Farm. He describes the farm as a place for horses to have a "gentle landing" after their careers. He shares how actress Angie Dickinson helped fund the retirement of a horse appropriately named "Academy Award." The farm has become a major Kentucky tourist destination where fans can meet legends like Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup winners, treating them with the same reverence once reserved for the stars of the silver screen. Key Data Old Friends Farm: Recognized as the largest thoroughbred retirement farm in the world. Rescue Funding: Angie Dickinson donated $5,000 to secure the retirement of the stallion "Academy Award". Location: The farm is located in Georgetown, Kentucky, approximately 14 minutes from Tony's Steak & Seafood. To-Do / Next Steps Visit oldfriendsequine.org to learn more about thoroughbred retirement or to schedule a tour. Look up the archived Boston Globe columns of Diane White for examples of acclaimed, timeless writing. Dine at Tony's Steak & Seafood in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lexington, or Bowling Green to support the show's sponsor. Check the Old Friends website for information on meeting Little Brown, the farm's resident miniature horse. Conclusion Michael Blowen's life story serves as a bridge between the high-stakes world of Hollywood glamour and the quiet dignity of a Kentucky horse farm. By applying the lessons of character and humility learned from cinema legends to the care of equine athletes, he has created a unique legacy that honors the "stars" of both industries.

Lucie Arnaz talks with Steve Dale about her kind-of-famous mom (Lucille Ball) and her own children on Mother's Day. She has a new book, Lucy and Desi: The Love Letters. But would Mom have wanted her to reveal these very personal notes? A candid conversation with Lucie can go anywhere, as she certainly speaks her mind.
It's all led this: Chapter 10, prepping the first ‘I Love Lucy' episode. And we begin with another perfect storm, this time of logistics. Where will they shoot in L.A., and HOW with multi-cam on 35mm film, in front of a live audience? Not to mention in front of the camera had its own issues. Remember the Pilot didn't have the Mertzes; and now they needed to find them. Rehearsals got under way in the same space construction crews were still building sets. And Lucille herself? Coddling her pregnancy (understandably; after all, it was ten years in the making). Then we'll close-out the season, our story, on Saturday, September 8th, 1951; the first official ‘I Love Lucy' shoot day. Would it be a hit? Maybe. The conservative estimates in their favor? Rooting FOR them? They had a fifty-fifty shot. Please chime in here with your questions & comments, or just sharing your love of Lucille Ball and her road to ‘I Love Lucy!' Thanks for listening ...
PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI lloks at THE LUCY SHOW and HERE'S LUCY.First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 3rd 2026.As a lot of you may already know from one or two of his previous appearances on VISION ON SOUND, our friend PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, is a big fan of the kind of archive television that features women in prominent roles, holding their own against the prevailing masculine dominance that featured in most of the television of the time. PAUL has come on to the show to talk about the more female-oriented dramas and comedies that were being made at the time, featuring women who were far more than just the sidekicks, housewives and mothers that society often demanded that they portray, and somehow managed to break the moulds, constraints and expectations that America and the world insisted women should meekly conform to.One of the many names that he has enjoyed talking about is LUCILLE BALL, who was something of a powerhouse in American television not least because of her six-year stint on the sitcom I LOVE LUCY in the 1950s. Such was her star power that she became a legendary television producer with DESILU PRODUCTIONS which went on to produce three of the most iconic drama series of the 1960s, THE UNTOUCHABLES, STAR TREK and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, two of which are still proving to be just as popular today as they were back in the 1960s.PAUL has recently been watching two of LUCILLE BALL's later sitcom successes and wanted to discuss what he had seen of them with me today. These were the ground-breaking THE LUCY SHOW from the mid-1960s, and HERE'S LUCY which followed it. Both of these shows ran for six seasons, and were just as popular when she chose to end them as they always had been, with the latter holding its own alongside other iconic series such as THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and BEWITCHED in the cauldron of female emancipation that brewed in the early 1970s.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Chapter 9 sees Lucille and Desi get married. Yep, again! Lucille will re-sign with Columbia, reuniting her with dear friends Ed Sedgwick and Buster Keaton. And she and Desi will both make more movies (this on top of Desi's nightclub touring and serving as Bob Hope's musical director). Well, why not make a movie together? If Hollywood wouldn't bank on them, they'll bank on themselves, and form their own company. But what to name it? Seems like using the same as their Chatsworth ranch oughta work! But how to prove Lucille and Desi work as a showbiz team? Why not go straight to audiences? Live! Which is just what they do. And that's when a lot happens at the same time. CBS is interested in turning her hit radio show ‘My Favorite Husband' into a TV show. Which leads to making a pilot. Which leads to Lucille and Desi having to decide if they're willing to give up everything they have -- her film and radio careers, his radio and nightclub careers -- for the thing ALL the studios are adamantly against: television. And the icing on the gamble cake? Lucille Ball was pregnant. On this episode of Scene Missing, we head into shadowy postwar London for a stylish and strange detour in the career of Douglas Sirk. Before the lush Technicolor melodramas of the 1950s, Sirk took a crack at noir with the 1947 thriller Lured. A serial killer mystery wrapped in elegance, obsession, and just a touch of dark humor. Starring Lucille Ball in a rare dramatic role, the film follows a woman drawn into a dangerous undercover game as bait for a killer targeting lonely hearts. Along the way, she crosses paths with a gallery of suspects played by the likes of George Sanders and Boris Karloff, each bringing their own eerie flavor to the mystery.Joining me for the conversation is Washington D.C. comedian Lady Vee, and we dig into what makes Lured such an odd and fascinating hybrid. Is this a straight noir, or something more playful and subversive? How does Sirk's later thematic obsession with performance and identity show up here? And where does this sit in the evolution of Lucille Ball before I Love Lucy changed everything?

Chapter 8 is live and sees Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz get divorced (kinda). While Desi's still in the Army, Lucille makes ‘Easy to Wed,' a hit, and ‘Two Smart People' which, unknown at the time, will be her last at MGM. Then Desi's out of the Army to find slipping back into life at MGM isn't as easy as he'd hoped. Lucille finds success freelancing -- including beginning her run with Bob Hope and one back in live theatre -- while Desi finds success back on the road. And then, in 1948, with Hollywood in a panic over the Supreme Court vertical integration decree and the onslaught of television, Lucille focuses on a medium for which she'd previously only guested but will now make her a bonafide star: Radio. Jeffrey BiegelTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Grammy winning classical concert pianist, and national treasure Jeffrey Biegel. In this episode, Jeffrey and I chat about his learning how to play piano from some of the greatest teachers in the history of the instrument, what he chose to go the classical route instead of a more pop focus, and some of his inspirations. Jeffrey shares stories involving Billy Joel, Morton Estrin, Lalo Schifrin, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, the late Neil Sedaka, Liberace, Peter Tork, the late Richard Lewis, Lucy Arnaz Luckinbill, Lucille Ball, Dan Lauria, Barry Manilow, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Peter Boyer. This episode is a walk down Memory Lane, as well as Fascination Street! We discuss some of the orchestras and symphonies Jeffrey has played with and continues to play with. Then we talk about some of his own projects, and why they are so important to him. Jeffrey shares some insight on projects like: Waltz of Hope I & II, Reflection of Freedom (JFK), Reflection of Equality (MLK), Rhapsody in Red, White and Blue, The Millenium Project, and so much more. I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to Jeffrey for sitting down with me on his way to teach a Master Class in Wichita. Thank you, Jeffrey, you are a MENSCH!
Chapter 7 sees Lucille Ball arrive at MGM, 31 years old, acutely aware this is her last shot at stardom. She'll become the redhead we all think of including shining in Technicolor. There's ‘Du Barry Was a Lady' which reintroduces her to Red Skelton and introduces her to Gene Kelly. Then there's ‘Best Foot Forward,' a more-than-anything-else fun picture which begins her run of cameos (with the likes of Arthur Freed and Abbott & Costello). There's also ‘Meet the People' with Dick Powell (right before his turn to Noir) and ‘Without Love' with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. All of this peppered with war bond tours and, a true tragedy outside the scope of World War II, Lucille losing a family member. And Desi? He's in the Army now, stationed at Birmingham Hospital which is close enough to Desilu the ranch he should be coming home nights. But, well, Desi's Desi. To wit, we can't help but notice his and Lucille's seemingly unending cycle of passionate fights and makeups. Until that cycle looks like the end. IN this episode I spoke with author Kathleen Brady to discuss one of her favorite Lucille Ball films Stage Door. A boardinghouse for female theater actresses gets a new arrival in the form of Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn), an upper-class woman pursuing her dreams against her wealthy father's wishes. At first, her status makes her unpopular with the other boarders, particularly her roommate, Jean (Ginger Rogers). As Terry becomes better acquainted with the other girls and their shared ambitions, rivalry -- both professional and romantic -- explodes among them

Before celebrity culture was manufactured and media-trained, Ann Moses was right in the middle of it, capturing a generation of hot, young stars just as they were becoming icons. In 1966, an 18-year-old Ann Moses landed a position as the editor of Tiger Beat Magazine where she worked until '72!Ann remembers serving Walt Disney a refreshing orange juice, at the Sunkist booth where she worked at Disneyland and telling him she had written two articles for the employee newsletter. His sage words? “You never know where that will take you.”Armed with a pad, a pen, a tape recorder, a camera and relentless curiosity, she began chasing stories and opportunities. Ann shares how she talked her way into an interview with the Dave Clark Five when they performed at Melodyland Theater in Anaheim. She asked their road manager for just five minutes with the band. They gave her 35 minutes and her career was in gear.Joining Tiger Beat as an intern when it was just five issues deep with a staff of just four, Ann made herself indispensable. Her bosses sent her to clubs, sets, recording studios, and concert halls. She returned with loads of great photos and interviews and got to work writing, editing and creating contests, experiences and content that took readers right along with her. While covering Dino, Desi and Billy, Ann was offered a drink by Dean Martin. She requested a coke. She then sat down with Lucille Ball, for several hours, to talk about her son, Desi Jr. The interview spilled into a lunch where Lucy said, “Enough about me and Desi. Tell me about you.”Tiger Beat's exclusive access to The Monkees and The Partridge Family found Ann regularly visiting their sets for hours of personal time that led to fascinating stories. Spoiler: Monkee Talk was not actually written by The Monkees and Mike Nesmith spent an entire year avoiding Ann who was more than happy to talk, instead, with his wife, Phyllis. Bobby Sherman could not have been more friendly and amenable. While David Cassidy was also difficult to pin down until a note went home to his dad, Jack Cassidy.Ann opens up about her whirlwind romance with The Bee Gees' Maurice Gibb, including a European adventure and a shocking revelation at the end of their time together. What's the last thing you want to hear a man tell you in bed? She heard it!She also reflects on the Tiger Beat vs. 16 Magazine rivalry and she recalls the first time she saw the Osmonds open for Nancy Sinatra and the full-circle moment when she reconnected with Donny last year in Vegas! It's a joyful, fascinating conversation about a time when fame was more personal, access was real, and one young reporter armed with a camera and a tape recorder, could find herself at the center of it all.In current media, Weezy is 'recommending the documentary Paul McCartney: Man on the Run on Prime.Path Points of Interest:Ann MosesAnn Moses on InstagramAnn Moses on FacebookAnn Moses/Donny Osmond ReunionMeow! Chapter 5 has us going back in time to share Desi Arnaz' road to Hollywood; which, if you don't know, is more than a little surprising. And scary. And sad. And then more than a little hopeful as “picking oneself up by the bootstraps” is an understatement. From growing up in Cuba, surviving the 1933 Revolution, playing in rumba bands including with Xavier Cugat, drinking Bacardi rum with Bing Crosby, introducing the conga to Miami and New York, rubbing elbows with debutantes and Al Capone, to playing THE Latin footballer in Rodgers' and Hart's ‘Too Many Girls,' that Broadway hit becoming an RKO movie, Desi Arnaz proves his precursors to ‘I Love Lucy' are also well worth chatting about. Chapter 4 spotlights Lucille's thriving in the wake of her split with RKO Chief Pandro Berman … including dipping her toes in a medium that would prove more than a little seminal: radio. In her words? “It turned out to be one of the smartest things I did.” Outside of work? There was her next serious relationship: director Alexander Hall. Their relationship is more a mutual understanding including time spent with their group of friends: George Burns & Gracie Allen, the Fred Allens, and the Charles Ruggles. Even with her family living with her in Los Angeles, Lucille always embraced found-family and this was an incredibly strong group for her. Now, one of the movies she'll make during this period? ‘Dance, Girl, Dance.' During which she met her future husband: Desi Arnaz. Wearing a wallop of a black eye. SHE had the black eye. Kind of. We'll get there. Please chime in here and/or on Instagram @fromoutofthepastpodcast with your questions & comments, or just sharing your love of Lucille Ball and her road to ‘I Love Lucy!' Frances Fisher joins Steve Kmetko for a candid, funny, and deeply thoughtful conversation about acting, ambition, heartbreak, Titanic, Clint Eastwood, Lucille Ball, and what it really means to build a life in Hollywood. Frances talks about growing up around the world, finding acting through community theater in Texas, bartending in New York while chasing work, and the unusual creative choice that transformed her performance in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She also shares a remarkable story about the phone call that may have led to Titanic, what made James Cameron such an effective director, and why Rose's mother was one of the easiest characters she ever played. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to singer and musician Inara George about growing up the daughter of beloved musician Lowell George. Perhaps best known for his time in the band Little Feet, Lowell George passed away in 1979 at the age of 34, just shy of Inara's fifth birthday. We spoke to Inara about the need and the restlessness of overseeing a legacy run by her mother and the toll it takes keeping it alive in 2026. Of course, we also spoke to her about her own career as a singer as well. So just how difficult is it for someone with both a new album out in March entitled, Songs of Douglass and Littell as well as a Record Store Day tribute album to her father in April, Rock and Roll Doctor: Lowell George Tribute, well, it's complicated. We spoke to Inara about her family roots in Los Angeles, where her grandfather made quite a name for himself as a studio supplier for expensive and exclusive garments for the movie studios brought him in contact with names like Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth and Greta Garbo. And with an upbringing like that, just how did his son got from the marching band at Hollywood High School whose best known Little Feat song "Willin'" has more 54 million streams on Spotify? We discuss it all. Along the way we talk about connections including Cambodian rock band Dengue Fever, Inara's bandmate in The Bird and The Bee Greg Kurstin who has produced records by Adele and Paul McCartney among others and discovering that Inara and host josh Mills went to the same college in Boston although not at the same time. If names like Jackson Browne, Frank Zappa comingling with folks like W.C. Fields and appearances on F-Troop are your bag, then this is your episode to dig into. Take a listen.
'Lucille' Chapter 3 -- “A Clown with Glamour” -- spotlights Ms. Ball's arrival at RKO, and her family's arrival in California. Lucille will befriend Ginger Rogers and, as significantly, Ginger's mother, Lela, who will prove a great mentor. And Lucille will need it as she navigates both the studio and studio relationship with chief Pandro Berman. Sure, he'll help her with her career, so long as it's the best decision for Lucille AND RKO. Because, remember, “Sex whispers but money talks.” Between 1935 and 1937, Lucille appeared in eleven features plus a handful of shorts, including getting her first fan letter and first press specifically for her comedy. She also took an RKO leave of absence to appear in a Broadway play. That's at work. At home? Grandpa Hunt's health falters and he gets heavily involved with Socialism. Back in Hollywood from Broadway, Lucille co-starred in her biggest production to date … that looked like it might be her biggest production at all. What's the last time you were in a police station? In LA, about 42 years ago. At two in the morning, I was driving in the Valley and stopped a police car to ask the way. They said, “Have you been drinking, sir?” I said, “Of course I've had a drink; it's two in the morning.” [They took me in], but they were very nice. I paid a £400 fine the next day and that was it.The funny thing was, the cop came out [of the car] and talked to me, and at the same time, he looked behind and said, “Does it show anything on his record?” And I look round, and it was a police woman who looked exactly like Lucille Ball, but with a police outfit on. Earrings, hair up, the holster in the gun – I'll come willingly.
We continue our celebration of Women's History Month with an episode all about Lucille Ball! She was a pioneer of television and a comedy icon, who made us all love Lucy.
From 2020 - We speak with Darin Strauss, author of "The Queen of Tuesday: A Lucille Ball Story."
In this episode I spoke with author Kathleen Brady about the 75th Anniversary of I Love Lucy. The 75th anniversary of I Love Lucy is October 15, 2026. The iconic sitcom, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, originally premiered on CBS on October 15, 1951. Doug Hess is the host and producer!
Episode 2 — Four Studios in Two Years — spotlights Lucille Ball's arrival in Hollywood where she'll make ‘Roman Scandals' as well as about 20 more projects for Sam Goldwyn, Darryl Zanuck, and Harry Cohn ... before arriving at RKO. And, in that time, she focused on three things: sponging info, meeting people, and establishing a good reputation. Lucille Ball may have not finished High School but she was getting the education of a lifetime. All the while she's putting some of her paycheck away each week so she can get her family out west with her: mother DeDe, grandpa Hunt (who she called Daddy), brother Fred, and cousin-cum-sister Cleo. An embellished story or not, it's been told often: at the same time Lucille called her mother to say she was finally ready for them to come out? She lost her job. Well, the family should come anyway but “take the bus instead of the train!” Please chime in here and/or on Instagram @fromoutofthepastpodcast with your questions & comments, or just sharing your love of Lucille Ball and her road to ‘I Love Lucy!' Millions of movie buffs knew Robert Osborne as the elegant, erudite film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies, but few knew that he spent time as a struggling actor, was mentored by comedy legend Lucille Ball, and even appeared in the pilot of “The Beverly Hillbillies” — a show he was certain would “never catch on.” Some years ago, Gilbert sat in as TCM's “Guest Programmer” and Robert generously returned the favor by traveling to Manhattan's Society of Illustrators on a hot July evening to dish a little dirt and share anecdotes about Hollywood luminaries Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Natalie Wood and Walt Disney (among others). Gilbert and Frank visit the Manhattan apartment of 91-year-old comedy legend Larry Storch to talk about his days in nightclubs and burlesque, his gift for accents and dialects, his decades-long friendships with Tony Curtis and Don (“Get Smart”) Adams and his memories of everyone from Lucille Ball to Orson Welles. Also, Larry shares some of his all-time favorite jokes and joins the boys for an impromptu (and practically on-key) rendition of the “F-Troop” theme. Learn more about your ad choices.
