The tenth year Stars on Suspense kicks off with my favorite installments of "radio's outstanding theatre of thrills" from 1948! First, it's a sixty-minute Sam Spade/Suspense crossover with Howard Duff in "The Kandy Tooth," a radio sequel to The Maltese Falcon (originally aired on CBS on January 10, 1948). Then, Burt Lancaster is a tough guy with murder on his mind in "The Big Shot" (originally aired on CBS on September 9, 1948) and Edward G. Robinson plays both himself and "The Man Who Wanted to Be Edward G. Robinson" (originally aired on CBS on September 30, 1948). Lucille Ball is a hold-up artist who rolls the wrong victim in "A Little Piece of Rope" (originally aired on CBS on October 14, 1948), and Vincent Price and Claude Rains co-star in a story of a murderer preying on the city of London in "The Hands of Mr. Ottermole" (originally aired on CBS on December 2, 1948).

We were celebrating her debut, The One and Only Vivian Stone- hailed as "sparkling" by Abby Jimenez. A little romance, a little historical fiction and mystery make up this addictive read.Melissa and I chatted our love for old Hollywood, Lucille Ball, celebrities, some Bravo ;) and a lot more. TVC 700.1: Emmy Award-winning writer, director, and producer Joseph Dougherty and author and artist Alexis Hunter join Ed for the first of a special two-part look at the life and career of Joi Lansing, the legendary Blonde Bombshell best known for her pin-up photos, her frequent work in movies and television throughout the '50s and '60s, and her successful nightclub singing act. Joe's latest book, Comfort and Joi, is a part-biography, part-filmography, and part-appreciation of Joi Lansing that makes the case that Lansing was not only a much better actress than people gave her credit for, but could make even a seven-second silent bit in which she appears on the far edge of the frame interesting to watch just because she was in it. Alexis is the author of Joi Lansing: A Body to Die For, an intimate memoir of Alexis's four-year relationship with Lansing, a period that coincided with the last four years of Joi's life before she died from breast cancer in August 1972. Joi and Alexis had to keep their relationship secret, partly because of the pressure Joi felt to maintain her public image as the ultimate object of desire for men, and partly because the public at large in 1969 was not as accepting of intimate relationships between two members of the same sex as they are today. Topics this segment include the many karmic coincidences that brought Joe and Alexis together (as well as the many ways in which their books complement each other); how Joi honed her comedic skills while working with Lucille Ball and Bob Cummings; and Joi's experience working with Orson Welles not only in Touch of Evil, but in the award-winning comedy-drama Fountain of Youth.

In this episode, we bring in Paula Pant from Afford Anything to show how negotiating—done well—can level up your finances, your relationships, and yes, even who does the dishes. Paula breaks down why many of us fear negotiation, how to overcome those internal roadblocks, and how setting clear “aspiration” and “reservation” points can lead to more confident conversations (and better outcomes). Whether you're asking for a raise or trying to avoid unloading the dishwasher for the fifth night in a row, her tactics are practical and empowering. If you want to stand head and shoulders above the herd and outperform your competitors in any market, you only need one thing: A competitive edge. Your competitive edge is the distinct quality that makes you superior to the rest. And you know what?  There is a certain competitive edge that produces exceptional results if you develop it. Some of the richest people in the world even believe this common practice to be their “X factor.”  Everyone can do it, but not everyone will.  In this episode, I'll reveal this uncommon competitive advantage billionaires like Mark Cuban and Warren Buffett claim is the key to their success.  Listen now.  Show Highlights Include: How you can create your own competitive advantage by borrowing these strategies from Chick-Fil-A, Apple and Amazon. (02:07) Why a ‘talentless' Lucille Ball excelled in the film industry and cemented her name in television history (and how you can do the same in your life). (05:15) The X-factor these two billionaires say results in an uncommon competitive edge (you don't even have to be a billionaire to do this). (07:27) Why Warren Buffett spends less than $4 on breakfast (and how his unique diet philosophy can increase your chances of living longer) (09:11) Do you want to stop existing and start living your best life right now? John welcomes legendary former New York Timesman Todd Purdum to the show to discuss his new book, “Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television.” Purdum tells the story of Arnaz's rise to become the most powerful and influential Latino executive in Hollywood history: from his arrival in America as a Cuban refugee in the 1930s to his first taste of fame as a nightclub bandleader (and instigator of the Conga dance craze) in the 1940s; and from his culture-shifting roles as co-star (with his wife, Lucille Ball) of the country's most-watched TV show and cofounder of its most prolific TV production company in the 1950s to the raft of innovations he unleashed that gave birth to the rerun, the syndication market, and thus the business model on which the industry thrived for more than half a century. In today's Workday Playdate Snack, we're talking about the kind of conflict resolution that doesn't involve a six-part text thread or passive-aggressive dishwasher loading. We're diving into how playfulness—yes, even mid-fight—can be your secret weapon for stronger, happier relationships. Whether it's your partner, roommate, or that one family member who treats the group chat like a TED Talk… this snack is for you. The Problem: You're crushing deadlines at work—but stuck in a weird silence at home. Maybe it was about socks. Or the dishes. Or nothing at all. And now you're trying to lead a team while low-key simmering with resentment. Spoiler: unresolved tension doesn't stay home. It follows you to Zoom. Why It Matters: Research shows emotional residue from personal relationships impacts performance, presence, and psychological safety at work. You can't be fully present in the boardroom if you're still replaying last night's kitchen argument. The Improv Hack to Try: The Silent Scene Yes, it's as ridiculous—and effective—as it sounds.  Next time things get tense with your partner, skip the serious convo and act out a mundane task (like folding laundry) with exaggerated mime and facial expressions. No words. Just play. Why it works: Interrupts the fight-or-flight cycle Sparks laughter and connection Rebuilds rhythm and sync—without a 45-minute processing session It's improv for intimacy. Lucille Ball meets couple's therapy. Coming up Wednesday: Ready to take this playful practice even deeper? Orson Welles stars in a rare two-part Suspense science fiction drama “Donovan's Brain” (originally aired on CBS on May 18 and May 25, 1944), and Vincent Price and Ida Lupino co-star in “Fugue in C Minor,” a Gothic horror drama from the pen of Lucille Fletcher (originally aired on CBS on June 1, 1944). Charles Laughton encounters a strange man who claims to have invented an undetectable method for murder in “The Man Who Knew How” (originally aired on CBS on August 10, 1944), and Gene Kelly enjoys a seemingly supernatural streak of luck…until he doesn't in “The Man Who Couldn't Lose” (originally aired on CBS on September 28, 1944).

"MARK STEVENS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" The name MARK STEVENS probably doesn't ring a bell with moviegoers today. However, he's one of those actors who once you see him on screen, you say, “Oh, yeah, THAT guy!” Still, at one time, he was a very in-demand leading man who was always compelling and had a tough-guy likability that brightened up many a hum-drum movie. He may not have reached the upper echelon of fame like contemporaries ALAN LADD or DANA ANDREWS, but he certainly left his mark — particularly in “The Dark Corner” with a pre-TV LUCILLE BALL. Like CHARLES LAUGHTON, DICK POWELL, and IDA LUPINO, he also became a pioneer of the actor-turned-director. Today, we take a look at his long and varied career and celebrate him as our Star of the Month. It's part 2 with Comedian, actress, and Netflix star, Fortune Feimster and she's back overflowing with wild stories, deep moments, and Hollywood surprises. She kicks off with a musical confession that she once performed Goodbye Earl live with The Chicks and raves about vocal queens like Kelly Clarkson (the slimmed-down version) and Alanis Morissette, earning massive diva points. We had no idea Fortune could sing until she shocked everyone at Chumpaoke. But, she swears she's not releasing an album, but now we know there's a voice under that comedy crown. From coast to coast, Fortune has done over 200 cities and 150 shows annually. She opens up about the grind of tour life and how acting—like filming Netflix's FUBAR with Arnold Schwarzenegger—gives her room to breathe. Season 2 is wrapped and packed with more action (and more Fortune!). But what happens when Fortune invites reality design king Jeff Lewis into her home? CHAOS. What began as a quick two-week makeover turned into four months of filming Hollywood Houselift and poor Jax (Fortune's soon to be ex-wife) was not thrilled. "Jeff pokes the bear." Fortune laughs, revealing the duo's dynamic clash—funny, never nasty. And yes, Jeff once called Pol' “the worst f***ing client imaginable. Badge of honor? Then boom—Madonna. Jax, a die-hard fan and fellow Michigan native, finally got to meet her idol at a private, no-phones-allowed event. And get this: Madonna knew who Fortune was and had seen her comedy. “She was kind, gracious… everything,” Fortune says, holding back tears. Jax got to thank Madonna personally for her lifelong LGBTQ+ advocacy. Total bucket-list magic. It's not all emotion—there's fashion shade ahead in “Runway Rundown.” Fortune reacts to Harvey Guillén's ruffled Critics Choice look (also worn by Chris Perfetti) and Hannah Einbinder's vintage couture moment from Hacks, drawing comparisons to Lucille Ball meets Paris runway. “It's exaggerated, it's bold, and she's serving,” Fortune says. Then: trivia chaos. Fortune plays “It's a Fortune After All” and tries to guess: - Who bought a banana for $6.2 million? (New York) - Who made $100M for one movie? - Who owns the most expensive yacht? (It's not Trump) She aces it. Then we dish on viral hecklers like Natalie Cuomo, Fortune's own nightmare heckler during her Sweet & Salty Netflix taping, and the absurdity of Mandy Moore dragging Amazon for delivering to her burned-down house. Then things turn emotional. Pol' gives Fortune a powerful coffee reading, guiding her through something long buried—a personal hurt she's carried silently. He encourages her to release it and reclaim her full self. Put the chandelier back up, he tells her, metaphorically and literally. It's a deeply moving, soul-illuminating moment. In the final moments, Pol' offers a stunning insight: Fortune may be holding onto something from her past—a moment she stayed silent, something she needs to release to truly level up in her life and career. “It's about coming home to yourself,” he says, bringing the conversation full circle.

Carol tells Julia how she learned to accept rejection, what Lucille Ball taught her about being a boss, and how a spontaneous ride on a beer truck led to her landing a CBS special with her dear friend Julie Andrews. And Carol gives Julia a compliment that makes Julia cry, which leads to a touching conversation between Julia and her mom Judith.
