A beszélgetés során a hollywoodi kánonba befurakodó másság nyomait kutatjuk: hogyan lesz a szekrényből kilépő figurákból társadalmi kísérlet.

"I'd hate to take a bite of you... you're a cookie full of arsenic."Alexander McKendrick's compelling noir is full of lines like this, courtesy of screenwriter Clifford Odets - quite fitting for intrigue set in the back-stabby world of showbiz journalism. Burt Lancaster may appear more dinky here than normal but don't be fooled by his glasses: JJ Hunsecker is a powerful and fiendish columnist who employs an ambitious press agent, Sidney Faclo, played by Tony Curtis to break up his sister's romance. Conflict and betrayals emerge from the darkness here, masterfully rendered through sharp angles and lighting contrasts by Oscar-winning DP, James Wong Howe. Decorated with subtle touches and engaging performances, "Sweet Smell of Success" was a critic's favourite when released in 1957 and Josh lays the whole story out in this episode of LTP Noir.Pre-Production @ 01:55; Summary @ 23:00; Production @36:00; Review @47:00 Get your Magic Mind here!

But today we have Jared's pick from 1959 and from director Billy Wilder, “Some Like it Hot.” This film stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe! Billy Wilder channeled his inner Adam Sandler for 1959's SOME LIKE IT HOT. All he had to do to wow critics and audiences was put Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in drag, and sexualize Marilyn Monroe every few scenes. Stanley Kramer's 1958 feature THE DEFIANT ONES, a film very much of its time, makes multiple on-screen appearances in RaMell Ross' new NICKEL BOYS, a film about the way the past haunts the present. Both movies take place in the Jim Crow-era South and engage with that setting's lopsided ideas about justice, but THE DEFIANT ONES does so from a much more straightforward approach, operating as both a stylish thriller about two escaped prisoners, one black (Sidney Poitier) and one white (Tony Curtis), and an earnest allegory about interracial acceptance. That latter quality makes it easy to lump in with Kramer's other “message movies,” which are often dismissed from a modern vantage point as stodgy and sanctimonious, so we're revisiting THE DEFIANT ONES, with an assist from critic and pal Noel Murray, to see whether it earns or defies that reputation. And in Feedback we revisit our WIZARD OF OZ discussion with a reader suggestion of another child female protagonist who rivals Dorothy when it comes to teary helplessness. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE DEFIANT ONES, NICKEL BOYS, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. EPISODE 66 - “WHEN CLASSIC FILM'S SUPPORTING ACTORS STEAL THE SHOW” - 12/16/2024 There is nothing quite like watching a film when suddenly a supporting character comes in and walks away with the film. (Think THELMA RITTER, S.Z. SAKALL, or GALE SONDERGAARD in almost every one of their films!) This week we are focusing on some of our favorite supporting charters who come in and snatch that scene right about from under the big stars. From JOANNA BARNES' Gloria Upson declaring, “It was just ghastly!” in “Auntie Mame” to the impassioned monologue about love that BEAH RICHARDS delivers to SPENCER TRACY in “Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,” we take a fun look at these powerful performances that we're still talking about today. Together, they discuss the historical context of the original novel and Russia's attempt to reclaim this important piece of Ukranian culture, how the movie embraces Cossack culture, and why Chase and Kristen could not get behind the Tony Curtis of it all. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.Support the show
