EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers John Herbert “Jackie” Gleason was born on February 26th, 1916, on Chauncey Street in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The younger of two children, his brother Clement died from meningitis at fourteen in 1919. Six years later his father left the family. Gleason's mother Mae got a job as a subway attendant for the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation. Jackie spent his youth hustling pool and performing in class plays. He quit high school and took a job to perform at local theaters, putting on acts with friends, and then emceed at the Folly Theater. When Jackie was nineteen in 1935 his mother died from complications of sepsis. He worked his way up to a job at Manhattan's Club 18. Jack Warner saw him, signing Gleason to a contract for two-hundred-fifty dollars per-week. Jackie married dancer Genevieve Halford on September 20th, 1936. The couple had two children: Geraldine, born in 1940, and Linda, born in 1942. Classified as 4-F and rejected for military service, by the summer of 1944 a twenty-eight year-old Gleason had appeared in films opposite Ann Sheridan, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, and Betty Grable. He also became known for hosting all-night parties in his hotel suite. His hotel soundproofed his apartment out of consideration for its other guests. NBC, seeing something in the brash, outspoken Brooklynite, added him to Double Feature, co-starring Les Tremayne and Alfred Drake, Sunday nights at 10:30PM. Rebranded The Les Tremayne-Jackie Gleason Show, he debuted this episode on August 13th, 1944. Edgar Bergen was the special guest. This is that debut. The show would air until October 22nd.

No one played characters with suppressed anguish, a tortured soul, or darkness lingering beneath the surface better than he did. While he only made 16 films in a period of five years, he is unforgettable. His desire to be thin was his achilles heel that turned tragic. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. Welcome to another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast – our Halloween edition – with part two of our interview w/ Janna Taninbaum and Michael Ritz, the children of comedian Harry Ritz of The Ritz Brothers. On this second half of our interview, we talk about some of the hijinks Harry got up to as a performer and as a father as well. Like what you ask? Janna tells us about life in Las Vegas growing up with her dad and his vanity plate in the 70s, we hear some terrific stories about gambling and the mob that Harry was part of and privy to, as well as Betty Grable's race horses & her aversion to the WC, stories about comic Jan Murray, how their father was ‘the guy in the middle' as well as more on Harry and his brothers fame on Broadway, movies, television and the stage in their later years. We loved hearing these tales about the man who influenced everyon from Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis and Mel Brooks. In fact, it was Mel Brooks who said, “As far as I'm concerned, Harry Ritz is the funniest man ever.” Take a listen. And a laugh, won't you to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast? Our Fox 1942 episode explores two different modes of Betty Grable Fox musical (both choreographed by Astaire collaborator Hermes Pan) that draw on the Hollywood musical modes established in the 1930s:in black and white, the Warneresque backstager Footlight Serenade, shot by Lee Garmes; and the Technicolor farce Springtime in the Rockies, with comic support by Edward Everett Horton and Carmen Miranda, whose eccentric comedic styles confront one another and produce what might be chemistry. Elise comes around a little on Betty Grable, whose persona we discuss, along with the covert feminism of Footlight Serenade's plot. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we Siskel and Ebert Claudia von Alemann's feminist filmic essay Blind Spot (1981), but agree that the sandwich-eating and pickle-refusing scenes are great.    Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s:      FOOTLIGHT SERENADE [dir. April and I talk Betty Grable Stage mother Lillian. Lillian had Betty enrolled in dance school at three. She was in talent shows, and God forbid she came in second. Lillian was one pushy broad that wanted stardom for herself (as most stage moms do) but pushed Betty to be a star.  Thanks so much to April for doing this series with me. www.classicblondes.com Thanks to Deborah for making the suggestion. I have to get the link to Deborahs book. It's not classic Hollywood, but it is a good read. Mostly thanks to the listeners. First of all Happy Late Mom's day! I was at family reunion so no computer. Was supposed to post this Sunday..   April and I do part 2 of Stage Moms. Today we talk about Ginger Rogers mom Lela. She would do anything to make her daughter a star, and she did. Ginger as we all know was amazingly talented, she trusted her Lela and Lela was not only her mom, she was her BFF. That wasn't too great for any of Gingers 5 hubby's. Studio execs loathed her, and it's alleged the movie The Hard Way was based on Lela and Ginger.  Ida Lupino starred as Joan Leslies big sister that will do anything to make sis a star...and she did. The picture of Ginger and Lew Ayers in front of their wedding cake..I'll post.. RUN LEW, RUN. Their marriage lasted under two years. Lew thought three's a crowd and literally told her to back to Lela's home.. Again thanks to Deborah for the idea. Our final four are pretty rotten moms. Next up Betty Grable, then Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood, and Gypsy Rose Lee's mom, Rose Hovick.. Thanks to my partner in crime April. You are the best.. her website www.classicblondes.com Mostly thanks so much to the listeners..YOU ARE THE BEST!!
