Eating disorders are characterized by more than just the physiological processes in the body, but also importantly the mental health process involved. On this episode, Robyn Cruze discussed her book, Making Peace with Your Plate.
Kathryn interviews Psychologist Carder Stout PhD, author of “Lost in Ghost Town: A Memoir of Addiction, Redemption and Hope in Unlikely Places.” A tale of excruciating truth and visceral fear, Stout takes us into the stranglehold of addiction and his combat-zone battle to overcome it. He is now a Los Angeles-based psychologist and therapist to Hollywood's elite. Stout's clientele include Oscar, Golden Globe, Grammy, Tony and Emmy award winners. Kathryn also interviews Certified Coach Robyn Cruze MA, author of “Making Peace with Your Plate: Eating Disorder Recovery.” An estimated 70 million people suffer from eating disorders yet their loved ones, as well as adults who have overcome eating-disorder behaviors, still have eating-disorder thinking. She helps unshackle us from our fears, anxiety and the need to control by providing proven strategies for recovery and taking back our power. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Without proper treatment, binge-eating disorder and bulimia can also bring misery and death. Robyn Cruz struggled with food throughout much of her adolescent and adult life, most notably, an eating disorder that crippled her spirit. Now, Robyn is traveling the country with her husband and two daughters, determined to raise awareness about the deadly nature of eating disorders and the long journey she traveled to make peace with her body, her food, and herself. A well-known published author, public speaker and coach, Robyn Cruze, MA, is Eating Recovery Center’s National Recovery Advocate. Robyn participates in national media events and conferences exclusively for Eating Recovery Center and its Partner Programs. She also serves as a crucial source of support and knowledge to alumni, families and professionals on behalf of Eating Recovery Center and the Eating Recovery Center Foundation.
Guest: Robyn Cruze, eating disorder recovery advocate Today I’m joined by Robyn Cruze, who serves as national recovery advocate for Eating Recovery Center. Her early career as an actress brought her from her native Australia to Los Angeles, all while she became more and more sick with her eating disorder. But as she began her own recovery journey, she formulated the ideas behind “the body conversation,” which shifts the focus off of dieting and emphasizes listening to your body’s signals. She sat down with me at the Innovations in Recovery conference in San Diego to discuss the overlap between eating disorders and addiction and to share how to spot red flags of disordered eating even as our culture’s unhealthy messages about body image make it harder than ever. Robyn Cruze has lived an adventurous life to say the least — an actor from an early age, she’s chased big dreams, failed in even bigger ways, and not only survived but has discovered a fullness of life she never thought possible. Now in recovery, Robyn is a published author, invested Mom, and recovery advocate living in Denver, CO. Her journey teaches us about the comorbidity between substance use and eating disorders, how coping mechanisms and life passions provide alternatives to destructive behavior, and that there’s no “perfect time” for recovery — the sooner, the better.
Dr. Reedy opens the discussion with a summary of the book "Making Peace with your Plate" by Robyn Cruze and Espra Andrus. The conversation then expands into the "3 Tier Approach"™, the authors' organizational approach to educate, manage and then practice Recovery from Eating Disorder. Unlike other addictive issues, individuals with eating disorders can't get away from food. Body image refers to a person's perception of his or her body which can be dramatically different from reality. Body Image is not typically about the body but the underlying issues and insecurities. It is crucial to treat those primary issues and not just the symptoms. It becomes important to challenge these individuals and resist treating them like they are fragile.
