Roberta Hawkins + Leslie Kern share about their book, Higher Expectations: How to Survive Academia, Make it Better for Others, and Transform the University on episode 595 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Quotes from the episode We advise lots of different ways of rethinking our relationship with work in the book. -Roberta Hawkins You can't solve institutional problems with individual sacrifices. -Leslie Kern We are not cogs in an institutional machine. -Roberta Hawkins One of the challenges, is the idea that our work is kind of a calling. It's a passion project. The institution knows that we love our work and that we are passionate about our students and that we care about bringing great ideas to fruition in the world, so it will extract every little drop of that from you in terms of your time and energy. -Leslie Kern Invisibilized labor is an equity issue as well as a workload issue. -Roberta Hawkins Resources Higher Expectations: How to Survive Academia, Make It Better for Others, and Transform the University, by Roberta Hawkins and Leslie Kern What you didn't learn in class: Revealing the hidden curriculum, by Lindsay Vreeland, Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Northern Illinois University Beyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life's Purpose, by Martha Beck
What if healing isn't about becoming more, it's about remembering who you already are? In today's episode of The Healing + Human Potential Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Martha Beck for one of the most profound and heart-opening conversations I've had about healing, awakening, and living in truth. Dr. Beck opens up about the out-of-body psychic experience during surgery that became her doorway from trauma and anxiety into joy, peace, and wholeness. She reveals the messages she received from the light of consciousness and so much more. With three degrees from Harvard, she reminds us that true wisdom lives where science meets spirit – in the lived experience of awakening. Together, we explore what it really means to awaken while staying grounded in the body – how to find safety in spirituality after trauma, and why awakening isn't about striving but about releasing what isn't true. We also dive into gentle, trauma-informed entry points to meditation, her framework for dissolving anxiety, the importance of shadow integration, and joy as a spiritual strength. I can't wait to hear how this episode resonates & what opens up for you. === Episode Time Stamps 00:00 – Intro 00:48 – Paranormal experiences, awakening, living beyond anxiety 03:05 – The OR Experience: "I wasn't dead, but I left my body" 06:15 – Communion, joy, and the core messages 09:58 – Waking Up 12:00 – Aftermath: Trauma flashbacks, life upheaval, and the light remains 16:40 – What Science Can / Can't Explain about NDEs 19:30 – Psychic: Remote Viewing Stories during Pregnancy 22:05 – "What if a Critical Mass Awakened?" An episode from East River Baptist Church, a conservative, independent body of King James Bible believers located on the Northeast side of Houston, Texas. East River Baptist Church's (ERBC) mission as an assembly is threefold:- To Exalt the Saviour! Eph. 3:21- To Edify the Saints! Eph. 4:16- To Evangelize the Sinners! Lk 24:47 What ERBC believes about the Scriptures: “We believe that the scriptures of both Old and New Testament are verbally inspired of God, that they are the supreme and final authority for faith and practice, and are preserved in the Authorized Version (KJV 1611) of the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16. Psalm 12:6-7." What ERBC believes about God: “We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That God is supreme in His person, absolute in His attributes, glorious in His perfection, and eternal in His being. 1 John 5:7." What ERBC believes about Jesus: “We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ. His conception by the Holy Spirit, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, His bodily resurrection, His exaltation at God's right hand, and His personal imminent, pre-millennial, and pre-tribulation return. Ephesians 1:7. ” What ERBC believes about man: “We believe that God created man in His image and likeness (a triune being: spirit, soul, and body) in a state of innocence's, but through temptation, he willingly transgressed, became dead in trespasses and sins. As a result, his posterity (all men) inherited a corrupt nature, are born in sin, and are under condemnation. Romans 5:12.” A message from ERBC to you:“If you are looking for a church in the Houston Texas area that preaches the Truth from God's Word, reach out to us at any time. Join host Dana Skaggs and organizational researcher Craig Mattson as they dive into the pressures of the modern workplace. Using powerful metaphors like "the wave" of digital overwhelm and the "life raft" of coping strategies, they explore why remote work often feels confusing and detached. The conversation tackles the big question: "Should I quit if my job feels meaningless?" Craig reveals the four distinct ways people find purpose—from changing the world to simply surviving the day. Ultimately, they argue that in an era of constant change, your greatest skill isn't what you do, but your ability to adapt your perspective and find meaning, even if it feels like you're just a cup of water in an ocean. Martha Beck is a best-selling author, life coach, and speaker and expert in coping with anxiety. Despite decades of sociology research and coaching, Beck says she'd struggled with anxiety her entire life. She says we live in a global anxiety spiral, and turned to neuroscience to understand why, and how to move past it. Through her research, Beck found that anxiety shuts down the brain's curiosity and creativity, and tapping into them can be life-changing. She opened up to Hoda about her book, "Beyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life's Purpose", and shares strategies to change the way they think and live.

Finding your life's purpose."I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness." Ac 26:16 NKJVIn baseball, the catcher tries to distract the batter. On one occasion when Yogi Berra was behind the plate, Hank Aaron came up to bat. Yogi started in, "Hank, you've got the writing on the bat in the wrong place. The words should be facing you." Yogi kept going, "You better check it." Hank didn't say a word. On the next pitch, Hank hit the ball over the center field fence. He rounded the bases, stepped on home plate, looked at Yogi Berra, and said, "I didn't come here to read, I came to win." It's vital to know why you are here and not to let anyone talk you out of your calling or purpose. In the world today, people say they are trying to find themselves. Such a search is pointless. As one pastor states: "If you don't know who you are, how do you know what to look for? And how would you know when you have found it, since you don't know what you are looking for? Toasters don't find themselves...A toaster...just [has] to do what the manufacturer had in mind." Paul had a supernatural encounter on the Damascus road when Christ said to him, "I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you" (v. 16 NKJV). To discover your life's purpose, you must start with God as your reference point. No successful organization. Family was the first organization ever created in scripture before there was business, before there was church, before there was government." - Stephen ChandlerStephen Chandler brings profound insight to the often controversial topic of roles within marriage and family life. Drawing from his experience as a pastor, he presents a refreshingly practical perspective that transcends traditional gender debates. Rather than viewing work through the lens of income, Chandler reframes it as discovering the unique problem you were placed on earth to solve—a concept that resonates deeply whether you're running a business, leading a ministry, or building a family. For listeners navigating their own purpose journey, Chandler offers wisdom that challenges conventional thinking about fulfillment. He explores how both men and women need a sense of purpose beyond parenting, asserting that identifying your unique contribution creates the inner contentment many seek. Through basketball analogies and scriptural insights, Chandler unpacks how clarity in roles—whether in marriage, family, or career—creates the foundation for success in all areas of life.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter

Sometimes life is messy. It can be tempting to bypass these uncomfortable moments when you're trying to follow a spiritual path. But living a spiritual life doesn't mean ignoring your true feelings during times of struggle, if anything, spirituality encourages us to be even more honest about how we're showing up from moment to moment. As the world continues to become more uncertain, we must find trust and support in our communities. Solitary practices are powerful, but it's time to embrace the coven! Gathering in community for mundane and magical moments helps us to stay connected to our humanity and our spirituality. As we listen to the birds sing on this cloudy day, let's get curious about growing the communities in our lives. At long last, my book Beyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life’s Purpose has been released into the world! In this episode of The Gathering Room—Episode #188: What Lies Beyond Anxiety?—I’m talking about the book and sharing some insights on overcoming anxiety through kindness, curiosity, and creativity. What can I tell you about this book that I haven’t told you already? I’m glad you asked! The book is divided into three parts: The Creature, The Creative, and The Creation. First you have to acknowledge that the anxious part of you is like a tiny scared animal, and you can’t use analysis or even medication to bash that little creature into a state of calm. You can only calm your creature by using kindness.Once you’ve calmed your creature, you can tap into your creative brain by exploring what makes you curious. Once you start using the creative parts of your brain, you shift energy away from the anxious parts and form a different pattern in the brain.Curiosity then leads us to creativity. Being in a panic is not a creative state and therefore can’t solve your problems—especially not problems you’ve never encountered before. For that, you’ve got to have creativity. Just remember to be gentle with yourself. And remember that creativity isn’t limited to traditional artistic pursuits like painting, music, or dance. Cooking, conversation, birdwatching, rearranging furniture—these are all creative acts! In fact, just about everything we humans do is creative. When we become creatively engaged with the world, we open our minds to the mysteries of existence. At this point, creation itself starts to play with us, like a mother dog with her puppies. We begin to notice synchronicities and feel a deep connection to the world around us.In our online Wilder Community, we’re offering a year-long Deep Dive into Beyond Anxiety with monthly videos, live Q&As, and group discussions to really explore each chapter of the book. To hear more about moving beyond anxiety through kindness, creativity, and openness to life’s mysteries, tune in for the full episode. We have manifested a truly authentic TBM guest today. Martha Beck is an author, speaker, coach, and sociologist whose focus has been on integrity, compassion, and living by your inner truth. This conversation delves into the profound intersections of authenticity, integrity, and self-discovery–and why community is so important in helping us identify patterns and really tap into our deeper and most authentic selves. It's a conversation about how to manifest safety and compassion within, how to get curious about our fears, and how we can start unearthing our true nature that has been within us all along. Martha has so many tangible tips and exercises to help us to quiet the noise of anxiety and fear and realize that being in truth and in our nature is safe, abundant, and kind. Martha and Jessica explore the power of small, incremental changes, the science of anxiety, and how living authentically creates ripple effects that can shift the world. This episode is a guide to aligning with your true self, finding peace, and embracing the creative potential that exists in each of us. We cannot wait to hear what this conversation unblocks for you and what manifestations start to come through.Find the Complete Show Notes Here -> https://tobemagnetic.com/expanded-podcast In This Episode We Talk About:Exploring the relationship between authenticity and integrity in everyday lifeMartha Beck's spiritual awakening and near-death experienceHow small, incremental changes can lead to profound transformationThe impact of lying (even small, polite lies) on physical and emotional well-beingDifferentiating between cultural conditioning and personal truthHow to shift from victim mindset to empowered creatorUsing self-compassion to quiet the inner critic and foster inner peaceUnderstanding fractals as a metaphor for integrity and collective healingThe importance of finding safety within to metabolize changeSimple sensory techniques to calm anxiety and cultivate creativityBuilding resilient relationships through honesty and gentlenessThe power of community in reflecting and breaking personal patternsReframing conflict as a challenger to help us awakenHow authentic living inspires transformation in othersMartha's practices for aligning with integrity, even in times of global unrest THEMES / TIME STAMPS:The link between true nature, culture, and the split many experience between the two (00:11:01)Why seeing our own patterns can be difficult, and why community is so important (00:21:30)The ripple effect of authenticity (01:01:05) Resources: The Authenticity Challenge is LIVE!!Manifest the life you *actually* want--Join anytime!
