How do you break free from emotional eating, binge eating, or food addiction when willpower isn't enough? Could hormone imbalances, nervous system dysregulation, childhood experiences, and hidden emotional triggers be the real reasons you're struggling with food?In this episode, I sit down with Amber Romaniuk to explore the real differences between emotional eating, binge eating, bulimia, and food addiction, and why understanding those distinctions is the first step toward lasting healing. Amber shares her deeply personal story of struggling with all of these challenges throughout her life, from the childhood experiences that shaped her relationship with food to the rock-bottom moment that inspired her to completely turn things around for the better. We talk about why dieting, restriction, and relying on willpower often only make the cycle worse, and how so many people blame themselves when the real issues go far beyond food. She also explains the root causes behind self-sabotage with food, and we discuss how hormone imbalances, neurotransmitter dysfunction, blood sugar instability, gut health, chronic stress, and nervous system dysregulation can all contribute to overwhelming cravings and loss of control around eating. We explore why simply changing what you eat isn't always enough, how to identify your personal triggers, and why building self-awareness, self-care, and emotional resilience creates a much stronger foundation for healing than chasing another diet ever could. If you've ever felt frustrated that you're doing everything "right" but still feel stuck with food challenges or your weight, this episode offers a compassionate, root-cause approach that can help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface.Disclaimer: This information is being provided to you for educational and informational purposes only. In this episode of the State of Mind Mental Health Podcast, I sit down with Sherry Shaban, osteopath, certified athletic therapist, and founder of Make Peace With Food, to get to the bottom of something a lot of us struggle with quietly: why we keep ending up back at the same late-night snacking, stress eating, or binge eating patterns no matter how many diets we try. Sherry's own story starts with a car accident at sixteen that ended her athletic career and led her through years of chronic pain and pain medication. That crucible pushed her into exercise science and osteopathy, and years of cycling through calorie counting, Atkins, Paleo, and keto, before she discovered the real driver behind her weekend binges wasn't food. It was her nervous system. We talk through why the diet industry has a ninety three percent failure rate, and why restriction almost always leads to a rebound binge. Then I do something I don't usually do on this show: I hand Sherry my own sleep tracker data, my coffee and sugar habits, and my late-night snacking, and let her walk through my hormone profile live, on air. What she finds in my cortisol, insulin, leptin, and ghrelin patterns will probably sound familiar if you've ever white-knuckled your way through a stressful day and then lost the plot by nine at night. Sherry's approach isn't about more rules. It's what she calls addition before subtraction: instead of cutting things out, you add one small, curious experiment at a time and pay attention to how your body responds. No shame, no six week transformation, just patience and awareness. If you've ever felt like your relationship with food is a personal failing, this conversation offers a more compassionate way to understand what's actually happening in your body — and something real to try this week. While annual inflation fell slightly to 10.1% in the year to March 2023, figures for food and drink alone reached 19.1%. If you break it down further, for some food categories, the rate is even higher; for example the price of sugar has risen by a whopping 42.1% in a year. Which items are people giving up as a result ? Your eyes do not live in isolation. They are wired into your brain, your nervous system, your sleep, and your daily habits and that means “better vision” often starts with choices that look nothing like an eye chart. We walk through the food and lifestyle routines Dr. Mark Grossman follows personally as an integrative medical optometrist and acupuncturist with decades of experience in natural eye care. We get specific about diet for eye health and brain health, including why absorption matters more than good intentions, how mindful eating (no distractions, slower chewing) supports digestion, and why an alkaline-leaning pattern with more fruits and vegetables and fewer refined carbs can change how you feel. We also talk about the Mediterranean diet and the MIND diet as practical frameworks, then share a flexible juicing recipe loaded with greens, berries, healthy fats, and supportive add-ins like ginger and chia. From there, we connect nighttime routines to repair, including finishing meals at least three hours before bed, and we explore stress tools that calm the body fast. Meditation, deep breathing, and even simple vagus nerve practices like gargling and yawning help shift you into a parasympathetic state that supports recovery. We also cover movement, social connection, and how to handle computer eye strain with eye exercise breaks and the 20-20-20 rule.If you care about macular degeneration prevention, dry eye relief, and protecting long-term vision as you age, this is a simple plan you can act on today.
