Associates on Fire: A Financial Podcast for the Associate Dentist
In this episode of The Dental Boardroom Podcast, Wes Reid, founder of a dental CPA and financial planning firm, dives deep into the Employee Retention Credit (ERC)—what it was, how it worked, and the lingering tax implications that dentists still need to address in 2025. From qualification rules and tax amendments to why the IRS is still behind on guidance, Wes breaks it all down with clarity and real-world insight. If you're a dentist who claimed the ERC or are still navigating its aftermath, this is a must-listen.Key Points Covered:What the ERC is: A government stimulus program that provided financial relief to businesses during COVID closures, especially valuable to dental practices. How eligibility was determined: Based on revenue drops and specific calendar quarters in 2020–2021.Claiming the ERC: Typically filed retroactively through amended 941 payroll tax returns. Why ERC resurfaced in 2025: The amendment window has closed, and many dentists are left wondering how to finalize tax treatment of ERC funds.Tax implications explained: Receiving ERC impacts labor expenses, corporate profits, and personal tax returns—requiring multiple amendments. When to file amendments vs. report ERC on current returns: Wes explains how to navigate reporting ERC on 2024 or 2025 returns if amendments weren't done in time.IRS delays and confusion: Lack of consistent IRS guidance caused delays and headaches for dental CPAs and clients.Important advice: Include the ERC in your current or next year's tax return if you're too late to amend previous years.#DentalBoardroomPodcast #DentalCPA #EmployeeRetentionCredit #ERCTax #DentalPracticeFinance #COVIDRelief #IRSUpdates #DentalTaxPlanning #PracticeOrbit #DentalBusinessTips #TaxAmendments

In Rescue and Remembrance: Imagining the German Collective After Nazism (U Wisconsin Press, 2025), Kobi Kabalek examines how the rescue of Jews during the Holocaust has been understood and represented in Germany from the Nazi period to the present. In many regions outside Germany, a small number of known Holocaust rescuers are often held up as exemplars of broad pro-Jewish sentiment among that country's population during World War II, thereby projecting an image of national moral virtue. Within Germany, by contrast, rescuers are often presented in both scholarship and public commemoration as a small minority; their examples condemn the majority by showing what Germans could have done but did not do. Kabalek argues that such simplistic depictions of the majority versus minority obscure the complex motivations and situations that led people in Nazi Germany to help persecuted Jews. Against the view that the rescuers were "forgotten" after the war, he shows that portrayals and interpretations of helping Jews appeared in various media and social discourses in East, West, and unified Germany and were used to actively debate questions of collective morality. Rescue and Remembrance analyzes the varied and changing depictions of rescue in the distinct German politics from the Nazi period, examining how the very notions of "majority" and "collective" were articulated and reformulated. Kobi Kabalek is Assistant Professor of German and Jewish Studies, Penn State University, since 2019. He earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia, with a dissertation on “The Rescue of Jews and the Memory of Nazism in Germany” (2013). In 2014-2017 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem as part of the ERC project “Experience, Judgment, and Representation of WWII in an Age of Globalization,” and examined conflicting perspectives concerning the war in Mandatory Palestine and their impact on the postwar historiography of Israel and Zionism. Former editor of The Journal for Holocaust Research and assistant editor of History & Memory. His research focuses on historical perceptions, moral sentiments, and memory in film, literature, auto/biography, oral narratives, art, etc., in German, Israeli, and global Holocaust history. He currently explores marginalized and extreme phenomena in Holocaust testimonies, historical writing, and popular culture – with special attention to the role of fantasy, imagination, and horror – and their impact on our understanding and representation of the Holocaust.

In this episode, I sit down with Hart Lambur, the co-founder of Risk Labs, the team behind UMA and Across Protocol, two projects solving some of the biggest challenges in crypto—cross-chain interoperability and on-chain data verification.Ethereum has scaled, but in the process, it's fragmented into over 50 Layer 2s, creating a messy user experience. Hart and his team are pushing for a cross-chain intent standard (ERC-7683) to make blockchain transactions feel instant and seamless—because let's be real, waiting minutes (or days) to move assets across chains is a joke.We also dive deep into:The “two-second rule” for crypto UX and why speed is kingHow ERC-7683 enables cross-chain swaps without waiting for block confirmationsWhy Ethereum's fragmentation problem could kill adoption if we don't fix itThe future of prediction markets and decentralized oraclesHow Chainlink maintained dominance in the Oracle space—and whether that's changingWhy AI-powered agents will need blockchain-based dispute resolutionIf you're into DeFi, cross-chain tech, and the future of Ethereum, this episode is packed with insights you won't want to miss.Key Takeaways:✅ Ethereum has scaled, but it now feels like 50 separate chains—interoperability must be solved.✅ The two-second UX rule: If a transaction takes longer, users will lose focus and abandon it.✅ ERC-7683 introduces cross-chain intents, allowing instant swaps by having solvers front transactions.✅ Optimistic oracles (used by UMA) enable decentralized dispute resolution, powering prediction markets like PolyMarket.✅ AI agents will need on-chain contract enforcement—blockchain oracles will play a crucial role.Listen & Subscribe:

On this episode, rural sociologist Dr. Irna Hofman explores how Tajikistan's cotton fields illuminate shifting power dynamics in Central Asia, historically and in the present. She discusses how the Soviet Union once showcased cotton production to visiting delegations—particularly from Muslim-majority countries—as evidence of its development model. Now, as global powers, including Russia, China, and the EU, vie for influence in the region, cotton has again become a strategic commodity—used to forge political ties, secure resources, and drive infrastructure projects. Hofman highlights local communities' active role in shaping these developments, emphasizing that rural landscapes are not simply backdrops for a “New Great Game,” but sites where broader geopolitical forces and grassroots agency intersect. Through her long-term fieldwork, she illustrates how Tajik farmers navigate and negotiate these overlapping external interests, and in doing so, reframe Central Asia's future amidst geopolitical tensions. Dr. Hofman specializes in agrarian and social change in Central Asia, where she has worked since 2012. She completed post-doctoral research at Oxford's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies as part of an ERC-funded project "China, law and development." In 2019, she obtained her Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands with a dissertation focused on the political economy of agrarian transformation in Tajikistan: "Cotton, control, and continuity in disguise: The political economy of agrarian transformation in lowland Tajikistan." Her research interests span political economy, political ecology, and political sociology. In recent years, she has focused on rural labour, gender, and commodity politics. Dr. Hofman is completing a monograph based on her dissertation and post-doctoral research projects. Her research agenda for the coming years centers on the rural everyday of geopolitics, focusing on China's growing assertiveness in the global agrifood regime, shifting geographies of production, and rural labour. On this episode of Anchored, Jeremy is joined by Christopher Loesser and Andrew King from Hundredfold Consulting. They discuss how schools could potentially claim hundreds of thousands of dollars in Employee Retention Credit (ERC) funds as compensation for the COVID-19 restrictions they had to accommodate. They outline qualifications and the consulting and filing processes schools must complete before the April 15 deadline. They also talk about how the money can be used, and the ERC success stories they've already seen.
