In this episode of Beyond the Clock, Ash and Anna are joined by Brigid Reedy, musician, poet, storyteller, and artist from southwest Montana whose work is deeply rooted in the rural American West. In this conversation, they explore what it means to be of a place in a time of mobility, polarization, and cultural fragmentation, and how place lives not just in geography, but as something carried within us. Brigid reflects on everyday ranch life and cowboy culture, the vital role of gatherings like the National Cowboy Poetry Festival, and how art-making helps to sustain connections across time and place. The conversation moves through the tension of staying or leaving home, what it means to resist isolation and lean toward interconnectedness, and how honoring one's creative “spark” can keep cultural lineages alive without turning them into static relics. Rich with story, philosophy, and lived experience, this episode invites listeners to reconsider belonging, responsibility, and the evolving legacy of the rural West.Learn more about Brigid Reedy here: https://brigidreedy.com/home
Foundations play a big role in supporting nonprofit work in Minnesota. One of the most prominent is the Bush Foundation. Founded in 1953 by 3M executive Archibald Bush and his wife Edyth, the foundation gives grants in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and the 23 Native nations sharing that geography. Its funding is helping train Ojibwe language teachers, create a loan pool for Black homebuyers and launch Latina child care businesses. It's supported everything from duck habitat restoration in South Dakota to programs for entrepreneurs in rural Minnesota. And it invests in emerging leaders through its longstanding Bush Fellowship program.MPR News host Angela Davis talks with the president of the Bush Foundation, Jen Ford Reedy, about how philanthropy is changing, how it shapes a community and how the Bush Foundation has responded to community upheavals, including the recent immigration enforcement surge and the murder of George Floyd. Guest: Jen Ford Reedy has been president of the Bush Foundation since 2012. Reedy was previously chief of staff and vice president of strategy for the St. Paul and Minnesota Foundation, where she led the creation of GiveMN.org and Give to the Max Day. She has also worked as a consultant with McKinsey and Company and directed the Itasca Project, a CEO-led regional civic initiative in the Twin Cities. She sits on the board of the Council on Foundations. Editor's note: MPR has received funding from The Bush Foundation.

If we want people to get better, we have to agree in a shared direction to move regarding what better looks like. How can we make sure that standards are continually growing with the field and with evidence from what has actually happened in the world so that our practice doesn't get static or stagnant? Send us a textWelcome back to today's podcast, a place where we share stories of awakenings—those moments when life disrupts the script and invites us into deeper truth, healing, and courage.Today's conversation is especially timely and tender. My guest is Susan Reedy, a Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in trauma recovery and resiliency. Susan works with people navigating grief and loss, traumatic experiences, life transitions, and anxiety—and she also trains other therapists in the skills of trauma-informed care, including the Trauma Resiliency Model.Susan's own story includes powerful awakenings: growing up in the Worldwide Church of God under Herbert W. Armstrong, the long work of de-programming from religious control, and her early work with traumatized children. We'll talk openly about religious trauma, a theme that shows up often on this podcast, and connect it to broader cultural and political stress many of us are carrying right now. We'll also revisit the Altadena fires—how quickly they spread, the scope of destruction, and the deeply human stories of loss that followed. Along the way, Susan helps us understand what trauma is, why trauma therapy matters, and what healing and wellness can actually look like after everything falls apart.SHOW NOTESSupport the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. n writing her memoir, BROKEN PIECES (and the fun things you can do with them), Reedy is hopeful that her life's missteps might help others. When she began studying Method Writing with a brilliant teacher, “her life's stories came pouring out like a waterfall", she said. It took a few decades to complete her manuscript to her satisfaction. She found searching for a publisher tedious and finally chose to self-publish with Paper Raven Books. In her book, Reedy shares the many phases of her life, the ups and downs, successes and failures, in a raw honest account. Through her publication journey, she met three other first time published memoirists, all women in their 70s, and now they are collaborating on a book to inspire future memoirists. Academics was not Reedy's strong suit, but she excelled in the arts, ballet and acting. Unfortunately, she had a much older mentally troubled brother she had to contend with. Her desperate attempt to escape family dysfunction took a traumatic turn causing her to lose her footing and stumble down a dark path. But there was light at the end of the tunnel and a happy ending in sight. Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed Chris Reedy, Senior Director of Food, Beverage, and Natural Products Industry Training at the Natural Products Laboratory and Test Kitchen of NC BioNetwork. We dove deep into the rapidly evolving food safety landscape, particularly focusing on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) 204 and its sweeping impact on food and beverage traceability. Our conversation ranged from the intricate logistics of tracking every ingredient in a sandwich to the challenges faced by beverage producers, natural product makers, and those entering the world of CBD and THC-infused products. We didn't shy away from discussing the regulatory Wild West these days, the importance of good manufacturing practices, and what's coming down the pike for craft producers as federal scrutiny ramps up. Chris Reedy brings decades of expertise in the intersection of food, beverage, natural products, and industry training. As the mind behind NC BioNetwork's laboratory and test kitchen, he has helped countless producers, from breweries to natural supplement startups, navigate regulations, quality control, and product development. His insights stem from both a scientific and a practical industry perspective, ensuring that companies strike a balance between innovation and safety and compliance. Chris is a passionate advocate for proactive quality management and is intimately familiar with both the promise and pitfalls of rapidly expanding product categories, such as CBD, THC, and functional foods. “I hope these companies that are making these products are going to start acting like food and beverage companies.” ~Chris Reedy Today on Consuming the Craft: · FSMA 204 requirements will soon compel all food supply chain businesses to maintain thorough traceability records for every ingredient, ingredient source, and lot, greatly improving speed and accuracy in foodborne illness recalls.· Transportation and logistics—especially temperature and sanitation in refrigerated trucking, remain a huge compliance challenge and could become a pain point as regulations tighten.· Even small producers, like sandwich makers and brewers, must adopt lot coding and traceability, associating each output with precise ingredient origins.· THC and CBD-infused foods, beverages, and supplements are currently in regulatory limbo, with the FDA focusing initial enforcement mainly on products that pose a risk to children or appear as copycats of popular snacks.· Many CBD and THC product makers fail basic quality assurance: lack of testing, unclear dosing on packaging, and no third-party certification, all of which can cause dangerous dosing errors.· Field-to-shelf testing for compounds like THC in hemp products requires a DEA-registered lab, making comprehensive quality assurance both expensive and complex for startups.· State and federal agencies lack the manpower to inspect and enforce these new standards fully, so proactive internal quality systems and involving health officials early are recommended.· Training, workforce development, and support from entities like NC BioNetwork can help companies establish robust quality management systems and prepare for both current and coming inspections. Contact Chris Reedy: NC BioNetwork – https://ncbionetwork.org/ Resources Mentioned: NC BioNetwork Laboratory & Industry Training: Food, beverage, and natural products services, COA assistance, and product testing information.FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) 204 – details on new federal traceability requirements.Multi-parameter Beer Testing (Anton Paar) – available free for every NC brewery, up to six samples per month. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) – framework for supplement industry regulation. For more information about industry training, regulatory readiness, and laboratory services, reach out to Chris and the team at NC BioNetwork. Episode 154 is on the scene with third generation racer Bryan Reedy. His grandfather, Orvil, raced in the Busch Series (Xfinity) & won many races while father, Tink, raced to championships at Franklin County and Motor Mile Speedway so you think he would have pressure to follow in their footsteps. Bryan discusses that legacy, why it's been nine years since he last tried running at Martinsville like he will attempt to do so at the end of the month, how long a team like his gets ready for such a big event at Martinsville, what he's been doing lately and what his most treasured moment in racing has been so far. The CARS Tour race from South Boston created a lot of chatter. From Landen Lewis getting bumped out of the way to changing a tire without a one lap penalty to Connor Hall pulling a Dale Earnhardt from Daytona in 97' by getting back into a heavily damaged car to earn points to the Mini Tyrrell and Tristan McKee incident, a lot went down on Saturday and we haven't brought up Kaden Honeycutt ending a multi year winless drought in tour LMSC competition and Parker Eatmon nearly landing on pit lane. The debates are running wild both online and on the podcast. Julian also has a word with the top five finishers from Saturday's at times controversial stop on the CARS Tour. The SMART Modified Tour has set their five driver playoff field after Ryan Newman's Dominion Raceway win over the weekend. We discuss who may have the edge in the championship fight and who has the edge in this weekend's return trip to Franklin County Raceway. If there wasn't enough tire controversy in the CARS Tour race, the Cup race in Bristol had 500 times more controversy. Did the tires giving out produce a better race because of it or is it still masking a deeper problem? The boys debate if Christopher Bell who hadn't won since March is about to go on a big run headed to arguably his best track in New Hampshire. We also tackle the latest news involving Oak Level Raceway, South Boston's Bonus Program for 2026, dubs from the weekend and a preview of the racing weekend ahead. All on another episode of DLN!

Dr. Reedy discusses the relationship between guilt, resentment, and boundaries.
Dr. Reedy reviews the book by Richard Bach, the author of Jonathon Livingston Seagull. Illusions is the allegory of a “Master Messiah” as he passes his wisdom on to Richard, the apprentice. The overarching message of the book is that we are accountable and responsibility for our own meaning, our own happiness. His telling illustrates that such a message is often rejected because we don't want to take on the responsibility for our lives – we want to blame our unhappiness on our circumstances, on others.

Dr. Reedy welcomes Dr. Katia Moritz, an expert in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Dr. Moritz discusses common misperceptions is the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder. She explores the etiology and how family members are the cause of the issue, but may be inadvertently contributing to some of the dynamics. N.B.I.: https://www.nbiweston.com Dr. Moritz's bio: https://www.nbiweston.com/katia-moritz
Dr. Reedy discusses the issue related to individuals choosing to cut contact with their family members. He also talks about what to do when you are on the receiving end of this kind of boundary.
Dr. Reedy discusses how rebellion is a response to a situation where the project of individuation is threatened or stalled. He explains that individuation is the answer to the soul's longing for itself. He invites listeners to consider disregarding what they were taught about parenting, children and even this broadcast. He explained the attachment requires that we accept the premise that “our children are not our children.” (Gibran)
Dr. Reedy talks about what it means to hold space for another, what gets in the way of doing so and how this impacts the development of a child or the client in therapy. He explains that seeing someone is the key to mental health and resiliency and that the foundation of our ability to do that is in how we have managed to heal our own narcissistic wounding (the wounding of not being seen and accepted as we are).
Dr. Reedy takes live questions from the audience on parenting and boundaries. He explains how compassion is born by our boundaries.
