Everyone has a story. How they got here. Who they met along the way. The choices they made. The dreams they are chasing. These are just some of the topics we’ll cover in Anthologies Of Hope, a new podcast on journeys taken, battles won, and pain endured. But ultimately, why we are still he…
Jen John was the third ever guest on Anthologies of Hope way back in 2018! This time around, we catch up on what life has been like for her during the pandemic, completing grad school, working as a mental health counselor, dating, and just everyday life - all while staying sober! We talk about some of the growth that Jen has had since our last conversation, but also how expected and planned events can resurface unexpected trauma, feelings, and emotions at any time - and how to handle those.Jen recounts the reasoning behind why she started a new Instagram account over at @jendatessober to share some of the unfortunately ridiculous experiences she has encountered while navigating the online & app-based dating scene while being sober.I'm super excited to have Jen back on the show and loved this conversation as much as our first go round! If you haven't heard our first chat, make sure to go back and listen as soon as you finish here!Anthologies of Hope / Rick Osowskihttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/
Our guest this week is Kenedey Ward. By day, she currently serves as the Director of Project RED Team at Hope for the Day and by night, she's an amazing Enneagram 2 that is a must-follow on Instagram for all the spontaneous dance parties she posts to her stories! We dive into what started her mental health journey - including childhood trauma, the complications with getting married and becoming pregnant at a young age with a spouse in the military and being deployed overseas, pursuing higher education as a single parent - while also covering the successes she has manifested for herself and knocked down every obstacle that's come her way.We also dive deep into the critical work that she is doing with Project RED Team and the importance of mental health care and proactive education for veterans and first responders, since that aspect of holistic health has been overlooked for far, far too long.Anthologies of Hope / Rick Osowskihttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/
We kick off Season 5 with the amazing Molly Grisham and you'll easily see why I use the word ‘amazing' very honestly. This is a conversation I've wanted to capture since the first day we met via #heartcamp18, but due to scheduling complexities on both sides, it took us until now.We dive into what empowered Molly to bet on herself to start her own business, how that was built pre-COVID, how it evolved during COVID, and how she's taken care of herself in that time as well. I hope everyone can take something from this conversation, as it has helped me more than I ever could have imagined just in the three months since we recorded it!Be sure to head over to Molly's website at mollygrisham.com to get your hands on her free “Lead Your Life” download from the homepage. It's an amazing resource that you won't want to miss!Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope

In the history of treatment of people with mental health challenges, the American healthcare system has done a poor job at protecting people. Policy should ask people what they need to live the lives they want and support them in getting there, and while there have been improvements, we have more work to do. Join Hope For The Day and a panel of guests as we talk about the continued fight to ensure access to treatment, to improve quality of treatment, to reduce homelessness, incarceration, and discrimination, and ultimately move our system towards what better can look like: one where people are treated with dignity and proactive prevention of mental health challenges is prioritized. Our amazing guests this week include:-Joel Frieders: Hope for the Day's Director of Public Policy and Strategic Partnerships-Katie Rosenberg: Mayor of Wausau, WI-Kenedey Ward: Assistant Director for Hope for the Day's Project R.E.D. Join us for an exploration on trans experiences and its intersection with mental health. Biological sex implies binary or “two.” The reality is we are on a spectrum of identity and orientation, yet for years, “gender identity disorder” was listed as a sexual dysfunction. Our guest this week is one of ridiculous happenstance and one I am forever grateful to the universe for putting our paths on a collision course. Keeping the international theme going with our guest from Australia last week, our guest this week joins us from London by way of Germany! Anna Ossowski is an amazing friend, mental health advocate, community builder, and woman in tech.We dive into how we randomly met on Twitter and how that connection blossomed into a great friendship from across the ocean! Working in the Technology Industry, Anna fervently advocates for bringing mental health discussions to the workplace, building safe spaces into our communities allowing us to share and grow, and bringing frank and honest mental health conversations to conferences and keynotes. One of the benefits of the similar experiences in our day to day professional lives, but living in separate parts of the world, allows Anna and I to dig into what makes the mental health discussion different in the US, UK, and throughout Europe. You’ll also hear how Anna uses the tools she has on a regular basis to maintain gratitude, focus, and perspective. You can check out some of those tools at happinesspackets.io and Virtual Volunteers on Instagram. You can find Anna's PyLondinium Keynote, titled "The M Word", that we dive into in this episode on YouTube.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope

It is with great pride that I get to bring you a pre-COVID conversation with my favorite Australian, while she was sitting in her hometown of Geelong, right outside of my favorite place in Australia, Melbourne! Jessica Morris joins us this week to talk about all things mental health, podcasts, journalism, music, Nashville, our mutual love of Australia, and everything in between.Jessica currently hosts her own podcast, called Between You & Me (available on Spotify and everywhere else you get your podcasts), which we dive into deep during our conversation. If you are a fan of listening in to what happens when musicians talk about the things that hurt, heal, and change them, then her awesome podcast is one for you. As she mentions in our conversation, there is an Evangelical lens to much of the conversations Jessica has with her guests, but that does not limit the scope of either the guest or the respective conversation and many guests would easily cross over here to Anthologies on their own.You can now get the expanded edition of Jessica’s book, When Hope Speaks, on Amazon or wherever you get your books!Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope
2020 has been a roller-coaster of a year that no one could have anticipated! With stress, surprises, detours, and cancellations around every turn, it's been a difficult year for everyone. Even more so for parents, as they have navigated the initial cancellations and closures due to the COVID-19 outbreak, racial justice, police brutality, the stress & anxiety that comes with any back-to-school season, as well as also welcoming new members to their households. The panel of parents, composed of Hope for the Day staff, volunteers, and Agents of Impact will discuss all these topics and much more while discussing what 2020 has been like so far as a parent, while also looking forward to 2021 and beyond. Our guest host this week is:-Amanda Osowski: Founder/Owner of Heartfelt Beginnings, Postpartum & Infertility DoulaOur amazing guest Moms this week include:-Kenedey Ward: Hope for the Day Surrogate, Project R.E.D. We have our first return guest to our long-form interviews, who also just happens to be the guest host of last week’s live Conversations Cafe event! That guest host, and our returning guest this week, is my amazing wife, Amanda Osowski. Recorded prior to COVID lockdowns, quarantines, and precautions going into place, we sat down in early March to talk about the first 10 months of parenthood, what we expected, what we didn’t expect, the highs, the lows, and what we would change if we could.Which takes us to exactly what Amanda is doing about it! After learning so much from being a first-time mom, Amanda was dismayed at how much is really left to moms to fend for themselves, with plenty of known unknowns that no one ever really shares. You will hear how this turned into Amanda starting her own business to become a postpartum and infertility doula. You will hear the background in our discussion, but you can also head on over to Heartfelt Beginnings right now for a great listening guide as well!Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope

I sit down with Emily Fagan this week, as we were introduced through previous Anthologies of Hope guest and current Hope for the Day BFF Joel Frieders, when both he and Emily attended a community event that was organized by Congresswoman Lauren Underwood and Congressman Joe Kennedy III - one in which Emily was brought in to share the story she shares with us today!Emily is an accomplished classical musician, specializing in the Oboe, based out of Aurora, Illinois. She dives into what makes the Oboe an amazing orchestral instrument, how and why she chose to play it, and the beauty of being able to handcraft the meticulous reeds necessary to play the signature woodwind instrument. But throughout that conversation, we also discuss what the ups and downs of her journey looked like that brought her here today. From diagnoses of bipolar II disorder to ADHD to generalized anxiety disorder, we get into how it can be easy for someone to hide all of that while still appearing to be successful in many ways. However, Emily came to understand that she needed to make a change while hiding all that before it became too late and nothing could be done.I’m grateful to bring this powerful conversation to Anthologies of Hope and am confident you will enjoy listening to Emily and identify with more parts of her story than you’d expect.Links & References:"Underwood, Kennedy talk young adult mental health issues during forum", via the Kane County Chronicle.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope
Physical alteration, such as a tattoo or piercing, is referred to as body modification, but this term is actually much broader than you’d think. Throughout all of that you will hear in our discussion how important each of those aspects of Amanda’s life are as she currently battles Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer like a warrior, as well as being a survivor of suicide loss.We talk about how Amanda has navigated all the different journeys her and her two sons have taken, from the hard days and why counseling is so important and why embracing your feelings is so productive to the funny days and the difficulties in sharing a single Spotify account with two teenage boys. This is one conversation I am very glad to capture in a recording and share over and over again.Links & References: -The Eyes Up Campaign we reference during our conversation.-If you are a survivor of suicide loss and are looking for resources, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has a great set of resources available at https://afsp.org/ive-lost-someone.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope
This past July, Coffee, Hip-Hop, & Mental Health successfully fed 1,000 families. With the support of their local and national community - including Sip & Savor Coffee House, Hope for the Day, Sip of Hope Coffee Bar, and many others - the Poverty is Violent food drive was able to reach about 5,000 individuals! We are now committed to gifting 10,000 families with a week's worth of groceries and a year's worth of resources as a community. It'll be Christmas in August and while poverty is violent, food is love.Conversations Cafe is (usually) a monthly live podcast recording at Sip of Hope Coffee Bar featuring education and open forum dialogue on the intersections of Mental Health within our communities. I am very grateful and appreciative of the fact that I get to bring our listeners an amazing conversation today with Christoper LeMark, the founder of Coffee, Hip-Hop, & Mental Health - an amazing organization that has pivoted during the time of COVID to fighting hunger on the Southside of Chicago through multiple “Poverty is Violent” food drives throughout the summer. The timing of this episode is very important as the largest event of the summer, Christmas in August, is happening this weekend, August 28th, 29th, and 30th at the CSO Multiplex on 47th Street in Chicago. If you are a family in need on the Southside of Chicago, head over to chhamh.com/pick-up to sign up for delivery or pick-up availability ASAP! If you are looking to help out with some physical labor, as you’ll hear Christopher mention, head over to chhamh.com/piv10k to sign up today. But most importantly, and also the easiest thing you can do, is text DONATE.FEEDCHI to 77948 and sponsor a family with an entire week’s worth of groceries and an entire year’s worth of resources for ONLY $40. That’s right, you can help feed an entire family for only $40 while providing them with resources to fight poverty and achieve some sense of normalcy.Throughout the conversation, we dive into what brought Christopher to the creation of CHHAMH, the foundational element of the organization to normalize therapy, where Christopher looks to take CHHAMH beyond the Christmas in August event, and how his skill as a performer has brought him to his mission today!Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope

My friend, Dr. Ryan Stoll, PhD, joins us this week to bring us the first Mental Health Minute episode - one which we hope to be a series of episodes that will bring you plenty of bite-sized tips and tricks for how you can improve your mental health by bringing you some practical knowledge that would otherwise be sequestered in research and academia. As you’ll hear on the episode, Ryan’s background is in Clinical Psychology with a focus on anxiety and depression, as well as Entrepreneurship. You’ll hear throughout the episode how these seemingly two disparate ideas come together so beautifully and all the wonderful things that Ryan is doing with that combination of skills and accreditation. We jump into breaking down some tools that you can use for managing, attacking, and working through your anxiety - including concepts like awareness, correction, and cognitive self-control.Next up, we re-adjust and see how some of these same tools can be applied to depression, but also what new elements you can add to your toolbox to attack this mental illness that is more inwardly-focused, as compared to the externally-focused symptoms of anxiety. If you don’t have the time to re-listen, or undoubtedly take copious notes like I know my lovely and studious wife will end up doing, you can check out the companion blog posts that Ryan has written to accompany the episode. These blog posts are available at anthologiesofhope.com/mhm and are meant to be this very conversation distilled down into what you can take away, be actionable, and potentially even print out to re-read when you are on the verge of increased anxiety or in the depths of a depressive episode.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope
This week's guest is Jonny Boucher, founder and CEO of Hope for the Day. If you’ve been listening all season long, and caught Joel Frieders’s episode to launch the season back in October, you already know the charisma & energy that Jonny brings to any conversation. So I was super excited to capture some of that for all our listeners. You will hear just how much music is a part of Jonny’s life, how that has inspired him since his youth, became his passion in young adulthood, and still is a beating part of his heart today. We cover some of the trials and tribulations of both of us growing up through the Columbia House and BMG CD era and the status game of how big your CASELOGIC compact disc cases were.We dive into much more than just the elevator pitch of how HFTD started, where Jonny was when he received the news that would pivot his outlook on life and purpose, as well as what he has planned for 2020 both personally and within the HFTD mission. This is one conversation that I had a planned set of questions for, but at the same time, feels like we didn’t talk about them at all, but yet still ended up answering them perfectly. If you know Jonny, you will come to know, that is often how most conversations with him go.I hope you enjoy the conversation with Jonny as much as I did and as much as it meant to me to sit across the table from him. If there’s anything else you want to know about Jonny, you can check out Jonny's guest page for more details.Anthologies / Rick Osowski / Hope for the Dayhttps://www.auxchicago.com/anthologies-of-hopehttps://www.anthologiesofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.facebook.com/anthologiesofhope/https://www.instagram.com/rosowski/https://www.hftd.org/https://www.instagram.com/hopefortheday/https://www.facebook.com/hopefortheday/https://sipofhope.com/https://www.instagram.com/sipofhope/https://www.facebook.com/sipofhope
