It is actually based in restriction.” - Dr. Erin Knopf “You have to be intentional and really look for ways to create balance.” - Dr. Erin Knopf “It's[SSRIs] not necessarily causing any damage or harm, but it's certainly not going to give them the benefit that they are waiting for.” - Dr. Erin Knopf “There is no medication I can give to make the “nutritional restoration process”, weight gain happen with just a pill. There's no such thing.” - Dr. Erin Knopf “Health biometrics are so much better looked at from a vitals perspective, lab perspective, functionality perspective, quality of life too.” - Dr. Erin Knopf “ There's so many questions when it comes to medications and eating disorders, especially because there isn't a clear cut answer. It's just not that simple.” - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Connect with Dr. Erin Knopf here! Connect with Dr. Erin Knopf on Instagram! Bergen Mental Health Group Inc. is hiring! This episode is a continuation of my conversation with Stephanie. Stephanie's daughter struggles with ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder), anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder. In this episode, Stephanie shares about her daughter's six-month residential stay at the Eating Recovery Center in Dallas (https://www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/recovery-centers/dallas) followed by two months of partial hospitalization treatment there. Stephanie discusses how their family managed this time, and how her daughter missed her entire junior year of high school. Upon returning home, Stephanie talks about how her daughter was able to complete two years of high school in one year and graduate on time. While the journey hasn't been perfect and her daughter still struggles, her daughter is currently in her sophomore year of college and living on campus. Stephanie encourages parents to find community when they have a child with mental illness, and how important letting go was for her to find peace.
This is the first of two episodes with Stephanie James. Stephanie's daughter battles an eating disorder, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Stephanie shares candidly how her daughter's illness started her freshman year when she started skipping lunch and was losing weight. Stephanie took her to their family physician, who said she needed to be hospitalized immediately because of her weight and low blood pressure. Stephanie talks about how overwhelming it was to have her daughter diagnosed with ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder), and that the hospital was not sure how to treat her daughter as they had not had a patient with this diagnosis. She went to the eating disorders clinic and was prescribed medications for her anxiety and OCD. In this episode, Stephanie chronicles the long journey of her daughter's refusal to eat, which resulted in a feeding tube. Stephanie talks about their journey with outpatient, inpatient, and residential treatments, the difficulties of navigating the mental health system and insurance, and the importance of couples counseling for Stephanie and her husband during this trying time. Stephanie talks about how crucial it was for them to share what was going on with their safe community, and the support they felt as a result. This episode concludes with Stephanie's daughter going to the Eating Recovery Center ( https://www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/recovery-centers/dallas) in Dallas.

GLP-1 weight loss drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, have exploded in popularity due to their weight-loss potential. But what do they actually do? How do they function? And why are they the subject of so much controversy? With insight from Dr. Elizabeth Wassenaar, Regional Medical Director for the Eating Recovery Center and Pathlight Mood & Anxiety Center, this episode will empower you to make an educated decision when it comes to your body and these medications. Crucially, we will also focus on how GLP-1s may affect individuals with eating disorders - even if they are being taken as diabetes medication rather than to lose weight. If you'd like to learn more about GLp-1s from Dr. Wassenaar — and earn CE credits along the way — join Eating Recovery Center and Pathlight's virtual annual conference August 21-23 . The mass media has pushed skinny on us for decades. And while doctors encourage healthy eating and lower body mass indexes, the body positivity movement supports the inclusion of all shapes and sizes, emphasizing loving the skin you're in. But there are even more fractures in this conversation when it comes to the newest weight loss fad and object of desire: the drug Ozempic and its competitors like Wegovy and Mounjaro. There is also a dark side to this pursuit of perfection; namely, eating disorders and other health issues, both physical and emotional. Meredith Nisbet, the National Clinical Response Manager for the Eating Recovery Center, an eating disorder treatment center based in Denver, Colorado, joined The Excerpt to discuss the body image debate and how to navigate healthy ways to see ourselves.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Close relationships set the tone for how we experience love and security. Yet, keeping those relationships healthy is rarely easy. Fortunately, Attachment Theory researchers have spent decades scrutinizing why we connect the way we do and what actions help make friendships, partnerships, and family bonds flourish. For therapist, mama, and author Eli Harwood - aka Attachment Nerd - her journey into understanding attachment patterns was deeply personal. Her early life programmed her to believe that she could not consistently rely on her needs being met. As an adult, this belief severely impacted her ability to connect with others, prompting Eli to find the best tools for healing and growing new attachment patterns. She benefited from that growth so much that she spent the past 17 years inviting others to discover how fun and stress-free this transformation can be. Today's show is all about understanding basic Attachment Patterns, how they affect our relationships, and how we can enjoy becoming more secure parents, friends, and humans. One chilly Maine morning, enveloped in a snowed-in cabin, musician DW sat at a piano recording a melody that had just popped into his brain. As he played, the phrase “I deserve to be well” tumbled out of his mouth in song. He immediately broke down in tears asking, “Wow, do I really believe this?” That question, and the ensuing album he created with his band The Collection, fueled an artistic journey to make sense of depression, the stigma of psychiatric medication, and asserting self-worth. We sit down with David to hear his mental health story, why he chose to share it publicly, and enjoy a special performance of two new singles from The Collection's upcoming album. _________________________________________________________________________________ Resources: David's Links The Collection's Website: www.thecollectionband.com TikTok: @thecollectionband Instagram: @collectionband Link Tree: linktr.ee Mental Note Podcast & Mental Health Mental Note Podcast: www.mentalnotepodcast.com Pathlight Mood & Anxiety Center: www.pathlightbh.com Eating Recovery Center: www.eatingrecoverycenter.com Free Group Support: eatingrecoverycenter.com/support-groups Free Evaluation with a Trained Therapist: (877) 850-7199

The end of the calendar year packs a lot into a short amount of time and it can be easy to deprioritize your mental health in all that noise. One of the best ways to refocus on your values is to remember the ways you've grown this past year. So to honor the journey of 2023, we created an audio mural using six short stories from listeners and past guests. Storytellers focus not only on specific challenges but also on how they have built resilience, fostered mental health, leaned on therapy, and tapped into community. Ultimately, these collective vignettes whisper a comforting reminder that we are not alone and that hope is stronger than defeat. It grew out of personal tragedy - the unexpected death of a partner and a tumultuous path back to peace. She now works tirelessly to showcase the rich world of grief and why we should embrace it rather than hide from the pain. Today's episode is a conversation in which Ellie Pike, host of the Mental Note podcast (this episode first aired on 2/27/23), and I discuss my adult ADHD diagnosis and the workarounds I've learned to get things done and function in my life. Join us! Show Highlights: KC's background as a messy person whose life changed dramatically when her two children were born How KC had to learn how to keep a functional home in a totally new phase of life How an ADHD diagnosis as a young mother made sense of her whole life Why KC's ADHD diagnosis was “missed” during childhood and youth because she didn't “fit the mold” Why ADHD is NOT simply the inability to pay attention How success in school changed for KC during college when most of the work was to be done outside of class How ADHD affects what is going on in the brain, regardless of external behavior that may appear normal What KC has put in place to help her finish necessary tasks, even when they don't interest her The difference between motivation and task initiation–and why we treat them differently How ADHD medication changed everything for KC Why late-diagnosed adults with ADHD usually hit some kind of barrier, event, or transition that brings everything to a crisis point The connection between KC's depressive episodes and isolation, under-stimulation, and boredom KC's advice for listeners about creating systems that work WITH your brain: “Do a little, and do it as a person that deserves to function.” Why KC's message is that “care tasks are morally neutral” and have nothing to do with someone being a worthwhile human being Resources: Connect with Ellie Pike and find out more about the Eating Recovery Center and Mood and Anxiety Center: www.mentalnotepodcast.com Connect with KC: TikTok, Instagram, and Website Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning
