In this powerful episode of Apostle Talk, host Dave Bigler sits down with Ben Deeb, a quad-certified peer professional (CRPA, CJSR, PSP, CARC) and Center Staff Supervisor at Healing Springs Recovery Community and Outreach Center in Saratoga County, New York. Ben shares his raw, redemptive journey from severe cocaine addiction, repeated arrests (around 15 times), homelessness, and incarceration to becoming a transformative leader in recovery support. He candidly discusses how substance use disorders and mental health challenges affect a vast majority of the incarcerated population, the lack of meaningful rehabilitation or wraparound services in the justice system, and how a divine encounter with God during one of his jail stays ignited lasting change. Ben now supervises peer professionals, spearheaded the development of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs, recovery units, and reentry initiatives in the Saratoga County jail, helping justice-impacted individuals find hope, stability, and freedom. The conversation highlights the systemic failures in treating addiction as a moral failing rather than a health issue, the vital role of peer support and faith in recovery, and Ben's ongoing mission to train others and expand programs that bridge jail to community reintegration. This episode is a stirring testimony of God's redemptive power, the importance of compassion over judgment, and practical steps toward breaking cycles of addiction and recidivism. If you're struggling with addiction, supporting someone who is, or passionate about justice reform and recovery advocacy, Ben's story offers encouragement and real-world insight. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, reach out for help:Healing Springs Recovery Community: (518) 306-3048https://preventioncouncil.org/healing-springs/Shelters of Saratoga:(518) 581-1097https://sheltersofsaratoga.org/Subscribe for more inspiring testimonies of faith, recovery, and transformation. Dr. Tony Dice, CEO of Bishop & Dice Defense LLC, empowers veterans, law enforcement, and first responders to overcome trauma and reclaim their lives. As a Navy SEAL, therapist, paramedic, and firefighter, he's lived at the extremes of chaos and control—from overseas deployments to firefighting, from decorated service to deep meth addiction. His rock-bottom moment came when the pull of meth nearly prevented him from saving his young son during a public health crisis—a crisis that forced him to confront the war within. Emerging from addiction, Tony built a life rooted in truth, accountability, and recovery, creating the Holistic Change Model, a non-drug, evidence-informed approach that blends clinical insight with 12-step principles. His memoir, After the Trident, shares how this model helps heal the “invisible wounds” of those who serve, offering practical guidance for sustainable recovery and long-term life transformation. On this episode, Tony shares raw, authentic insights from his journey, exploring the roots of compulsive behavior, the challenges faced by heroes trained “not to quit,” and the strategies that turned a life of chaos into one of integrity and service. The beautiful thing about recovery is that it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each individual has their own unique journey and different strategies that work for them. The key to long-term success, though, lies in embracing a variety of tools and methods, allowing you to find what resonates most and keeps you moving forward.  In this conversation, Gust Host, Jamie Demeris and returning guest, Glenn Carosella, discuss the importance of understanding the deeper perspective behind your “why” and the inner-work it takes to find systems that work best for you. They also discuss the notion behind the biological understanding of addiction and why you have to keep doing the work to overcome the negative pathways.  Curious to learn more about our guest? Glenn Carosella, LCDC, holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. He is currently serving as an Outpatient Affiliate Manager in Katy, TX, and is an adjunct faculty member at Lee College. He has made his second appearance on the Positive Recovery MD podcast, sharing insights from his personal and professional journey in recovery.    Topics Discussed: Why you can't “outthink” addiction (but you can change your behavior) How to navigate triggers, boredom, cravings, & distractions Finding what fulfills your sense of meaning and purpose The process behind building an intentional foundation in recovery Getting reacquainted with your inner child Identifying authenticity and uncovering who you are   Connect with us on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverymd/  FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/positiverecoverymd/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter  YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Additional Links:  Want to receive the daily Positive Intervention from Dr. Powers' Positive Recovery Daily Guide? Robbie and Patrick sit down with Hilary Phelps, recovery advocate, former swimmer, and older sister of Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps. Hilary discusses her relationship with alcohol and drugs throughout adolescence and early adulthood and shares the experiences that led to her decision to get sober and build a life, and subsequent career, filled with connection and purpose. From her early years, Hilary shone brightly as a beacon of promise, excelling with top grades and outpacing her peers as the nation's fastest swimmer in the country for her age group. Yet, at just 14, her life took a dramatic turn with her first sip of alcohol, marking the beginning of a 15-year struggle with addiction—a time filled with profound emptiness, confusion, and a sense of being lost. At 29, Hilary courageously took a significant step towards healing by checking into rehab for substance use disorder. Her journey into sobriety entailed much more than simply giving up alcohol; it was about fundamentally changing her life, distancing herself from negative influences, and confronting the underlying issues that led her to addiction.  After 15 years of keeping her story of sobriety and recovery to herself (a quiet, personal victory), she realized the power and importance of sharing her story. She began to publicly share her story which led to more opportunities to speak out. Through these experiences, Hilary discovered a deeper purpose: to offer hope and encouragement to others who are healing quietly, helping them to persevere by openly sharing her own journey of recovery and healing. Today, as a speaker, an addiction recovery advocate, writer, and holistic wellness coach, Hilary is dedicated to helping other women find their voices and heal from the challenges holding them back. I've learned that often in life less is more, and this is one of those times. Susan's message that Substance Use Disorder is not a moral failing, it's a legitimate and diagnosable disease and Recovery is absolutely possible comes through in such powerful and enlightening fashion that anything I could say on the front end would only serve to diminish her quite salient, much needed, and incredibly well articulated message. So without further ado, Susan shares her and her son's journey with substance use disorder and recovery, including the heartbreaking death of her Son, who was under no uncertain terms, poisoned as you'll hear firsthand in the compelling and necessary Recovery discussion that is about to unfold before your very ears so do be sure you listen up. Benjamin Lerner, the Great-grandson of Irving Berlin (composer of such iconic tunes as “God Bless America” and “White Christmas”), is a Vermont-based Composer, Writer, Radio Host, and Recovery Advocate. Benjamin started his musical career as a classical piano prodigy. By his early twenties, he was an IV heroin and crack cocaine addict. Now sober since June 13, 2016, he journals his journey in addiction and sobriety in his all new piano-raps, which combine classical piano and rap. Benjamin credits his continued success in recovery to his ability to express his emotions relating to his struggle through word and song.  “When I first went to rehab,” Benjamin admits, “I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to make music anymore, because I made music about doing drugs for so long, I didn't know if I'd be able to do it without getting high.  It took getting clean for me to realize that expression and creativity are the drugs I've been searching for all along. I'm still a junkie. I just get high off of music now.” Benjamin has had the pleasure of performing for the National Academy of Medicine and The Aspen Institute. In 2019, he was the composer-in-residence at 1761 Arts, and he made his Carnegie Hall debut in April 2022 as part of the Indie Collaborative. His debut album, CLEAN, was released in February 2020. It was produced at Old Mill Road Recording in East Arlington, Vermont. Benjamin's weekly column, also entitled, CLEAN, is read weekly in the Vermont News Guide and was syndicated in Seven Days in 2022. In January 2021, Benjamin started hosting CLEAN Jams on WEQX, an innovative radio program that shines a spotlight on rap, hip-hop, and recovery. CLEAN Jams is sponsored by Old Mill Road Media. Author SpotlightThirty years ago, I used alcohol, romance, and professional accomplishments to soothe my frayed nerves. After I quit drinking, I found I had a serious thinking problem! Over time, I discovered effective tools from therapy, recovery programs, scientific research, and a variety of philosophical and spiritual teachings to find peace, wisdom, and hope–no matter what is going on in my life!Formerly crowned the “Queen of Worry,” I've resigned my post and now live happily with my wonderful husband, Peter, and my cat, Murphy. Although I haven't had a drug or drink for over 30 years, I do occasionally overindulge in Ghirardelli chocolate and historical novels. I hold a PhD in Psychological Studies in Education and an MA in Psychology, both from Stanford University. As a professor at Eastern Michigan University, I won several awards for teaching, and (as Georgea M. Langer) co-authored books and articles for educators.GiGi's personal story is captured in her latest book 50 Ways to Worry Less Now: Reject Negative Thinking to Find Peace, Clarity, and Connection & "Love More Now"This book began as a memoir chronicling my three short marriages, career as a professional horseback rider, and adventures hitchhiking across the north of Spain–all before I turned 38. My wise (4th!) husband suggested that instead, I write a self-help book with “all those helpful things you say when you counsel people on the phone.” At that point, Worry Less Now was born. The book shares what I've learned from my training in psychology and over 30 years applying tools from recovery programs, cognitive therapy, energy work, and a variety of spiritual and scientific teachings.Published 50 Ways to Worry Less NowStanford University, Stanford, California. If Tim Ryan's life story was sent to a Hollywood producer, they'd probably ask the screenwriter to go back and make it more realistic. But it's all true. Tim struggled with addiction for 30 years. At the age of 32, he first used heroin and quickly slid into spending a substantial amount of money on illicit opioids. He was a successful technology entrepreneur who used a variety of drugs including alcohol, cocaine and heroin to keep the train going. During his stay in prison, Tim joined the drug and alcohol treatment program. He became sober, attended group meetings and therapy sessions, and actively participated in the prison's rehabilitation program. He was paroled in late 2013 after serving 13 months of a seven-year sentence. Then the dope man became the Hope Man. This is an incredible story about one man's journey to get sober and how he's trying to take millions of people with him. My addiction is embarrassing and I'm ready to share it. This will be proof to you of how deep and intertwined our bad habits, compulsions, and behaviors can be. For the record, EVERYONE ends up addicted to something at some point.  It's not just drugs and alcohol. You can be addicted to work, exercise, external validation, negative excitement, procrastination, sugar, male attention, shopping, and your phone….I even have a friend in my support group that is addicted to the game Candy Crush.  Here's how you know if this habit of yours has escalated into an addition: If it comes with a negative cost to your physical health, emotional well-being, your spiritual connection, goals, your finances, or your relationships.  No one has ever said that “Salad is ruining my life.” As a great leader, I know in order to best help you; I have to be vulnerable first.  Hi, I'm Tiffany and I'm an ice cream addict. You may have just laughed, and that's ok it does sound silly….but here's when I knew it was a deeper problem. I started to NEED it. If I didn't have a pint of ice cream in the freezer, I would get anxious.  Then I started to feel shame when I would eat it, like “WTF is wrong with me, why do I have to have this?!” Although I didn't binge eat the ice cream, I would eat enough to where my stomach would hurt or it would be so much sugar that it would affect my sleep. Even knowing this, I STILL kept eating it. (insert more shame) I would wake up feeling like crap with a sugar hangover while watching my abs lines slowly disappear, and be replaced with full body inflammation (as a results form the dairy + sugar).  YET, I still kept eating it almost every night. It was my dirty secret.  Secrets like this keep us stuck in it because it fuels the shame.  Everything shifted for me in the last week, after I followed these steps. Listen to this life-changing episode, as my remarkable guest Melissa Paige, shares openly about addictions to food, alcohol, drugs, and nicotine. Melissa is 12 years sober from drugs and alcohol, and now two years free from smoking and vaping nicotine.
