A sermon by John Zeigler entitled "Root of Bitterness" from Hebrews 12:15
We can grieve the Spirit of God with our lifestyle and bitterness in our lives. The apostle Paul warns us against harsh words and bad behaviour towards others. Instead, forgive others as God has forgiven us in Christ. The purpose of this test was that if a husband is suspicious of his wife, it should be resolved, not ruined. This test showed that the trust between husband and wife has been completely destroyed. There is no life without good and bad, but it is better for us to have a counsellor with God. Let us try to remove bitterness from our lives. Instead, let us give grace to ourselves and others.

The seeds of hurt or disappointment can fall into the soil of any heart and, if not properly dealt with, become a root of bitterness. Roots are hidden but they bring forth a fruit of a different nature - anger, irrational behavior, stonewalling, and more. Join with us in this message as we learn how to destroy the root of bitterness and generate the fruit of the Spirit.

The issue of strife or unforgiveness is the result of a seed-thought that has germinated, found roots and manifests itself in one's attitude or disposition. The above scriptures point to the characteristics of bitterness. The word introduced to eliminate any room for bitterness is the word, “diligently.“ Most of us are not diligent, thus, we fall into the trap of bitterness without opposing its alluring disguises. Talking about ‘traps', notice Proverbs 11:9 (in the (New International Reader's Version) mentions the word “escape” while the Modern King James Version (MKJV) uses the word “delivered.”To escape the allure of bitterness we are told to be people of “knowledge” of God's word. The passage seems to suggest that knowledge of what to do separates the righteous fromthe hypocrite, the just from the unjust.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/kay-and-olu-taiwo-vision-guided-life--1709267/support.

It is difficult to view correction as encouragement. In this passage, the author of Hebrews encourages the reader to take heart in the discipline of the Lord and run the race together.

As Passover approaches, Pastor Mark began a new series in order for us to begin a deeper inspection into our lives to correct any wrongs that may be there so that we will be ready to participate with a clear conscience and start the feast cycle in right standing with our heavenly Father and each other. He began with a root of bitterness.
This week we kick off the month of December with our brand new Christmas series "Will it Christmas?" In our fallen world and especially in our American culture, Christmas has become more about material and superficial things than the birth of our risen savior. This series will focus on eliminating those things that draw our eyes away from the true meaning of Christmas. It's important we celebrate Christmas for the right reasons and not by the worlds standard.
The Root of BitternessUnfinished Business - Part 1Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartNovember 5, 2023#realspringcreekchurch #unfinishedbusiness #therootofbitterness #bitternesshttps://www.springcreekchurch.org/How do I know whether I have unfinished business in my past especially if I'm not consciously aware of anything? Believe it or not, there are telltale signs of unresolved hurt, buried pain, and unaddressed issues. Explore these roots that sabotage God's best for us in the present. SERIES: Unfinished BusinessIn short, a buried pain refuses to stay buried. There's a better way. This series will show you how to send the past into the past forever. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What are some of the messages (by word and deed) children receive while they are growing up that they never question? What coping mechanism do they adopt to deal with distorted messages? Has anything like this ever happened to you? What have you found helpful in dealing with these distortions, lies, and manipulations? 2. Bitterness is a common result of the refusal to deal with hurts from our past. What are some of the signs of bitterness? How does bitterness affect us personally? Why is bitterness counter-productive? What has been your personal experience with bitterness? 3. One of the surest signs that you have unfinished business from your past is when you're having reactions that are bigger than the moment calls for. This is a strong indicator that you're rolling the present situation into past events that were similar to it in your life. You're combining new anger and old anger – new injury with old ones. So when you have big reactions, you should pay attention to what triggered it, then start asking questions of yourself. Can you name one example of questions you should ask? Why is it important to ask those questions? How do big reactions hold the key to unlocking past hurts? 4. Doctors Les & Leslie Parrott wrote, “Repressed feelings, especially painful ones, have a high rate of resurrection. Be aware, however, that healing your hurts is a process of painful self-exploration.” Which means, we have a choice. Continue to push down our pain and therefore both deal with it for the rest of our life and allow it to come out in unpredictable ways OR revisit old hurts once and for all, see them for what they actually are, and forgive them so that we're through with them forever. Have you ever had to make this choice? What was your biggest fear? What was the result once you did? 5. Forgiveness is not excusing or explaining. Frankly, many of the things we need to forgive are inexcusable and sometimes we'll never know why the people in our life hurt us the way they did. Forgiveness is not saying, “I don't feel the pain anymore because now I understand it.” Instead, it's saying, “I don't feel the need to hold on to your involvement in my pain anymore even if I never understand it.” Forgiveness is all about releasing the emotional energy attached to that event or circumstance. It's to set ourselves free and to realize we're holding an uncollectable debt. Who do you need to forgive or who have you forgiven? What happened after making that decision? What would you say to someone who is stuck in unforgiveness?
Pastor Jay spoke primarily from the book of Ephesians today, where we find instructions on Christian living, as we peer into the roots of bitterness together and further study how it should be addressed and rooted out of our lives, before we might experience it's more devastating consequences.

Bitterness is a harsh, hostile attitude that results from arrogant reactions and sometimes becomes a source of habitual carnality in your life. Bitterness pollutes your thinking. You can't glorify God with bitterness in your soul's mentality. “See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it, many be defiled” (Heb 12:5). “Do all things without grumbling or disputing” (Phil 2:14). Bitterness is one of the greatest forms of arrogance you can get into because it feeds on self-justification. A habitual complainer is bitter, and you have no right to complain about anything. God wants you to share His happiness. Don't allow bitterness to destroy your happiness. Click for Full Transcript: https://rhem.pub/root-bitterness-b72a01
Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:14-15"Get a move on, Josh," said Luke as he scraped the dishes and piled them on the counter. "You're being lazy. Do your share of the work!"Josh stopped daydreaming and slowly filled the dishwasher. "I'm doing my share," he muttered."You are not!" Luke replied angrily."Boys, boys!" Mom said as she entered the kitchen. "I'm tired of the constant bickering going on between you two. You're brothers, and you should love each other.""Love? Who could love him?" Luke asked. "Every time we do anything, Josh drags his feet, so I end up doing most of the work.""That's not true!" Josh shot back. "Mom, he's always picking on me!""That's it!" said Mom. "You boys apparently need to work off some extra steam. When the dishwasher is loaded, we're all going out to the berry patch to pull crabgrass.""Aw, Mom!" The boys tried to protest, but soon they all were busy in the garden. By the time they were done, the boys were hot, dusty, and too tired to fight. They sat down while Mom went in and got a pitcher of cool lemonade and some snacks."You know, boys," Mom said as she poured them lemonade, "this makes me think of a verse in the Bible that talks about a root of bitterness growing and causing trouble in our relationships. I can see that bitterness is springing up between you two. It could destroy your friendship just like this crabgrass could destroy our strawberry patch. We had to dig out the crabgrass to protect the strawberries. Now let's work on digging the bitterness out of your relationship so you can be friends again. Okay?"The boys looked at each other and nodded. "All right," said Mom. "We'll start by asking God to help us. Let's pray that He will guide our conversation and bring to light anything that was said or done that is causing bitterness to grow in your hearts--and that He would help you forgive each other and love each other not just as brothers in this family, but brothers in Christ." Mom bowed her head to pray, and the boys did the same. Then, as they sipped lemonade, they talked about their differences and how to resolve them. -Phyllis M.
