As a new year begins, leaders are often faced with uncertainty, change, and challenges that cannot be solved with a predetermined plan. In this episode of The Leader's Journey Podcast, Trisha Taylor welcomes Megan Mills for a thoughtful and practical conversation about improvisation and its surprising relevance to leadership and everyday life. Together, they explore how the principles of improv such as trust, listening, shared agreements, and adaptability offer a powerful framework for navigating complexity, collaborating well, and showing up fully when the path forward is unclear. Megan Mills is originally from Waukegan, IL (north of Chicago), went to Hope College in Holland, MI and shortly after graduation, moved to New York City. Her early years in NYC were spent in stage management and personal assistant roles as well as performing, creating, teaching and directing improvisational theatre. Now daily life includes driving her son back and forth to numerous games and practices throughout Queens, NY and the tri-state area. Megan has a passion for organization, The Container Store, and Chicago Cubs. She has also been an advocate, public speaker, and volunteer for the American Heart and Stroke Association for the past 20+ years. Conversation Overview Beginning the year without a script Improv as a tool for adaptive leadership The importance of shared agreements and trust "Yes, and" as a mindset for collaboration Listening, presence, and patience in real time Supporting others instead of competing Improv games as practice for real life skills Applying improv principles to teams and leadership Creating safety and inclusion for all voices Meeting uncertainty with openness and curiosity Resources and References Mentioned Megan Mills at The Leader's Journey Truth in Comedy by Del Close and Charna Halpern Harvard Business Review - Three Improv Exercises That Can Change the Way Your Team Works TED Talks on improv, adaptability, and leadership Improv exercises including Three Headed Expert and listening games

What do you do in the moments - or seasons - when your coaching business feels too hard?In this episode, Ruth Saville, Alex Whitton, and Robbie Swale explore the emotional reality behind building a coaching business: the doubt, comparison, financial pressure, cancellations, unpredictability… and the unexpected beauty that sits alongside all of it.This episode began with a simple observation: every coach goes through periods when the business feels heavy. From there, the three of us look at what helps, what doesn't, and what it means to keep going in a work we care deeply about.Together we talk about:The many moments that make coaching feel hard - and why they surprise us every timeComparison, LinkedIn spirals, and the relief of remembering other coaches struggle tooCancellations, no-shows, reschedules - and how to respond without collapsing insideThe very personal nature of coaching, and how easily confidence gets entangled with identityWhy ‘you have everything you need' is easier to say to clients than to ourselvesHow to navigate hard seasons with more steadiness, self-respect and perspectiveWhat we each reach for when we hit the ‘break glass' momentWhy the challenging parts of the journey are often where the growth isThis is an episode for coaches at every stage - whether you're right in the middle of a difficult moment now, or you want to feel more resourced the next time you hit a wobble. As always, we hope it helps you feel less alone and more grounded in your own path as a coach.Oh, and if you like this, there's a Part II coming in the new year. I was staggered to wake up to the scale of the natural health scam cult I've been part of for most of my adult life, especially since surviving cancer. When I peeled back the onion on the royal sideways natural health has taken us it was a workout and revealed to me many layers of programming I had adopted trying to avoid the medical system. In 2000, after nearly a year of doing high speed natural health in the care of the most prominent natural cancer treatment experts I was sent home by the naturopath to do conventional therapies. All his tools didn't work. It all appeared to work for a time and then things quickly went downhill. Needless to say the conventional stuff nearly killed me quickly too.It means I've never stopped looking for solutions, and gratefully I've found more than I ever expected, turning many health mysteries into workable paths in the right direction. In this episode of Beth of Fresh Air, with a special guest, Dagmar Stansova, who also has decades of experience in this arena, we're going to unpack the cult of natural health in hopes of giving those with ears to hear half a chance.Discover deprogramming and archetype courses at www.bethmartens.comApply for a zero-cost, one-on-one chat about working together: https://www.bethmartens.com/awaken-your-journey-archetype-applicationFind out your King Hero Archetype in ten minutes:  https://www.bethmartens.com/king-hero-archetype-quiz-sign-upTake my starter course: Deprogramming 101: https://www.bethmartens.com/deprogramming101Be part of the maiden voyage of CreatorCode: https://www.bethmartens.com/creator-code ***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts SpotifyIf we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens—founder of the House of Free Will, pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and  business coach. After hearing him in many different conversations, and discovering our revelations in common, I'm totally stoked to talk with Joel Schafer myself. You could say not everyone gets excited about a journey in the underworld, rather they avoid it like the plague. But there are those that take on this blood sport (half joking) to meet the unmet, in potentially multiple dimensions no less.In this King Hero interview I'll tell the story about my history with the shamanic spiritual path compared with what happened, and ask Joel about the multi-facets of the path including — the cults and cult leaders he encountered, the benefits and potential pitfalls of having a psychedelic pallet to heal, vision, and CREATE with, and the ultimate goal of the work he guides. We'll go deep into the cosmology of his Toltec teachers, and his direct experiences that are off the map of their teachings. And no discussion in the shamanic realm would be complete without exploring the nature of entities, demons, possessions, and how they may relate with psychedelic experiences.Learn more about JoelJoel Schafer is a personal empowerment mentor & shamanic dreaming arts teacher. Through online courses, one-on-one mentoring & in-person workshops, Joel trains people in a highly effective way to reclaim vital energy & attention utilizing the Toltec knowledge base. De-culting is a very important skill that I hope to help people with, God help me. lolI was in several cults myself, and I'm sure you have been at one time or another too. Whether they were in the spiritual, health, or other arenas everyone's life has been particularly touched by cult culture. It requires a special sauce to extricate from a cult, and we will unpack what that is. I'm counting on the chat to share their cult experiences, and I'm thinking this might turn into a series since a deep dive into some of the cults in particular would be useful. We will talk about the scale of cults, the harm participation in them brings, and look at the solutions in the same place I always find them.PS Because I name the episodes of BoFA with verbs I had to invent a word, “de-cult”. Here's what AI says the meaning of it is. It gets me, which I know is not necessarily a good thing. LOLFrom AI:“The term "de-cult" is not a standard or widely recognized word in English. However, based on the context provided, it may be interpreted as a conceptual opposite of "cult," potentially referring to the process of disengaging from or dismantling a group or movement characterized by intense devotion, isolation, and control.” ***Discover deprogramming and archetype courses at www.bethmartens.comApply for a zero-cost, one-on-one chat about working together: https://www.bethmartens.com/awaken-your-journey-archetype-applicationFind out your King Hero Archetype in ten minutes:  https://www.bethmartens.com/king-hero-archetype-quiz-sign-upTake my starter course: Deprogramming 101: https://www.bethmartens.com/deprogramming101***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts SpotifyIf we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens—founder of the House of Free Will, pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and  business coach. In this special episode, Alex Whitton and Alex Swallow take the reins to interview Robbie about the release of his new book, The Power to Choose: Finding Calm and Connection in a Complex World. What unfolds is a warm, honest and surprisingly vulnerable exploration of choice, mindset, relationships, and the inner work that helps us meet complexity with more skill and less fear.Across the conversation, Robbie shares the nine-year journey behind the book - from a powerful coaching question asked by Joel Monk in 2016 through to the resistance, the rewrites, and the emotional cost of releasing something deeply personal into the world.Together, the three of them explore themes at the heart of both the book and coaching itself. In this episode they explore:Why in almost every moment, there's more choice available than we think. The idea of the Higher Self - and why we all have moments where we forget it.How curiosity becomes an antidote to reactivity and contraction. What really happens when we assume others are doing their best. Why connection and calm matter so much in a complex world. How writing a book becomes its own developmental journey. The castle metaphor for working with shadow parts of ourselves. The stories that shape us - and the ones we get to rewrite. Why none of this work is ever really finished.Robbie also shares two stories that bring these ideas to life in very human ways: a tense exchange with a neighbour, and a moment on a crowded train that turned into a masterclass in choosing calm rather than escalating conflict. This episode is thoughtful, grounded and full of practical wisdom - for coaches, and for anyone navigating the complexity of modern life. For more information about Robbie, visit https://www.robbieswale.com/To buy The Power to Choose, visit http://geni.us/powertochooseFor more information about Alex Whitton, visit http://www.exploregrowbe.com/For more information about Alex Swallow, visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexswallow/Read more about The Coach's Journey at www.thecoachsjourney.com.Get Robbie's ebook for coaches, An Introduction to The Coach's Journey Flywheel at https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/the-coaching-business-flywheelMusic by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. She began her inquiries in early 2020 after becoming skeptical of the official narrative surrounding the alleged COVID-19 pandemic, drawing on her background which included activism against water fluoridation, which taught her to question public health claims. In this episode of Beth of Fresh Air I'll be talking about memory, our innate ability to hold the past in our mind, body, and spirit (though the latter is debatable).I'll look at re-membering vs dismembering in the shamanic traditions I studied, the task of memorization that's a big part of social programming and engineering, the repetition of mantra that I've done a lot of for better and worse, and turn to the work of George Carrey for clues about how sound and light leave an impression on us, literally.I'll give a window into the detective work of discovering unconscious loops and stations that programming easily becomes, causing more complex “moving target” obstacles and forgotten freedom. And finally, while awakening into greater awareness and the freedom that can be made possible because of that is a great goal, the reality is that it's not a straight-line evolution. In the chat we'll discuss why that is the case, in hopes of giving people one less reason to feel defeated in their personal development.***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts Spotify***If we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens, a pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and business coach, and my  calling is a life or death thing. In this second episode of Beth of Fresh Air I'm going to invite people to gain greater perspective. The trick of the controllers is to get us behind the 8 ball in basic survival mode, even though that may or may not be the reality. The inability to see things over time, and recognize the revealing patterns, keeps people locked in the hypnosis of “lizard mind” assessing only, “Is it going to eat me?” Or, “Am I going to eat it?”This mode is an inspiration, vision, and connection killer. It's exhausting to the nervous system and ultimately results in people numbing and tuning out of their lives, and unnecessarily dividing from people, unable to make visioning a priority.Over the past three weeks I've been having private conversations with a number of people in my community to get a bird's eye view of where they are at. In this episode I'm going to share what I'm discovering and why being unable to clearly vision our future is the biggest enemy we face these days.***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts Spotify***If we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens, a pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and business coach, and my  calling is a life or death thing. What does the future of coaching look like… and what can we learn from those who helped build it?Ruth Rochelle returns to The Coach's Journey Podcast to reflect on how the coaching world has evolved over the past four decades and where it might be heading next.Prompted by a listener's question, Ruth shares stories from the early days of coaching - when it was more movement than industry - through the professionalisation of the 1990s to today's fast-changing, tech-enabled landscape. Alongside the history, she offers her vision for what's emerging now: deeper work, greater humanity, and a renewed sense of trust.Ruth and Joey explore how coaching has shifted from performance to presence, from achievement to wholeness, and from certainty to curiosity. They discuss scepticism in the early days (and now), the rise of coaching bodies such as the ICF and EMCC, the impact of technology and AI, and why compassion and simplicity remain at the heart of great coaching. In this episode, Ruth talks about:Why the earliest coaching approaches focused on the inner game and self-beliefHow the field grew from informal practice to global professionThe evolution from performance and achievement to whole-person coachingWhy trust, compassion, and presence still matter most for coaches todayRuth also invites every coach to listen inwardly and lead the way forward for the profession. If you've ever wondered how the coaching profession began - or where it's going next - this conversation offers wisdom, warmth, and hope for coaches building meaningful, sustainable practices in a fast-changing world. For more information about Ruth, visit https://www.ruthrochelle.com/For more information about host Joey Owen, visit http://www.joeyowencoaching.com/Read more about The Coach's Journey at www.thecoachsjourney.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community. And I'll share a personal story about my latest reset and what I learned from it.Finally, I'll reveal a hidden meaning in the podcast title that I noticed after choosing it!***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts Spotify***If we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens, a pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and business coach, and my calling is a life or death thing. After a decade as a corporate VP in my family's firm, eight trips to India, and a three-year battle with cancer nearly 25 years ago, I used archetypes and deprogramming harmful patterns to save my life.I was doing nearly everything wrong, in the physical, but tapped into and let go of the roots of the matter that were embedded and unconscious. And I went from dying to living practically overnight.Today I help people who love the truth more than their beliefs, and who want to serve with their life's work and be on their Hero's Journey, to de-program the beast system and stop making it easy for those trying to kill us.I host regular King Hero interviews highlighting leaders, entrepreneurs, movement makers, and lovers of freedom."Lately we've been all been inundated with so much.
