This episode of Mid-Life Men includes open and honest discussions about mental health challenges, including suicide. Some listeners may find this content distressing. In this frank and powerful episode, we hear from a man who has walked through unimaginable darkness and emerged not just surviving, but speaking with purpose and compassion. Through heartbreak, rejection, success, loss, and silence, Chris shares his lived experience of growing up as a Black British man navigating racism, identity, estrangement, and two suicide attempts. His voice is reflective, grounded, and unflinchingly open. He explores how trauma manifests over time, what it means to feel completely alone, and the moment he chose to live again. We talk about grief, masculinity, purpose, cultural silence, and what it really takes to start again, not just mentally, but spiritually and socially. Chris's recovery journey led to the creation of Project Soul Stride, a lived experience platform shedding light on suicidality for the black community and bridging conversations in mental health. What you'll hear isn't just a story. It's someone choosing to speak so others might live. You can find out more about Chris's work, including Project Soul Stride on his All My Links page.If you or someone you know is struggling, please consider seeking support from a qualified professional or mental health service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, there are organisations you can call now. for example, in the UK, you can call the Samaritans on 116 123, and if you are in the US, you can call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Many organisations provide communities for men, including Men's Sheds Association and Tough to Talk in the UK and, in the US, Face It Foundation and F3 Nation.

So excited to have Andy Archer with us today. He's a 27 year old Starting Pitcher for the Savannah Bananas. He tells us the journey through college, the dissapointment about the minor league draft, joining the workforce and then into how teaching a group of kids at Sunday School changed his life. As I talked with Andy, I put myself in his shoes and also thought about what his parents thought about the decisions he made in his life. -risks he took -surfing on lunch break -living a comfortable life vs living a life with purpose and using your God giving abilities -reading the Bible cover to cover -living away from all of his family and looking for ways to serve -how can you catch your kids imagination and be influenced by things that are good, true and beautiful Some questions to ponder: -when are times of life when someone can be depressed? -what do you do when you feel like your sin makes you not worthy of God's love? -what are some of the hardest words to say? Something I'm focused on is finding ways to have fun with my wife and daughters and also having fun while we are together. Whether we are playing sports, watching videos, doing houswork, going on an adventure day or just hanging out, it's important for me remember to have fun, laugh and connecting with my family. I wanted to record this podcast as a reminder for us dads to have FUN! Sometimes fun requires us to be uncomfortable. Andy talks about how he was below average dancer and one of the things he loves the most is the choreographed dancing that the Bananas do. He tells a cool story about doing the "Thunderstruck" dance. His story made me think about when I relax and am goofy with my family and let go of caring about being judged by other people. The Savannah Bananas are a lot of fun! Check them out in person with your family and on YouTube! Challenge: Have a conversation with one of your guy friends and read the same chapter of the Bible and discuss what each of you got out of it. The movie Cuties came out and he had a young daughter and Trent knew something had to be done. He was newly married, but had the idea to quit his job and start a company that creates books that capture children's imagination and attention. -Have you ever had an idea, but knew your wife would push back? -How did you know whether you should start the business and keep going? -What is something you can do to surprise your wife and have her see your leadership? -What is "Christian Cringe"? -What are you doing to help your children's moral development? We talk about some of the authors: a mafia crime boss, Hercules, Kirk Cameron and Trail Life are some of the authors. Trent talk about a goal he has everyday with his kids besides read books. He's got a simple goal of playing with each of his kids for at least 10 minutes. Trent also shares what life is like with 4 kids under 5 years old and what he does to prioritize his wife. He shares that he could do a lot better in this area. I thought it was cool that Trent was open, transparent and vulnerable about this part of his life. In this episode of the High Impact Man podcast we meet Huckleberry, aka Jonathan Stevens, the Q of culture for F3 Nation. Huckleberry shares from his life growing up in several states and ultimately landing in Boise, Idaho where he serves his community through an after school running group. About Tim Whitmire:Tim Whitmire is the co-founder of F3 Nation, a global network of free, peer-led workout groups for men that has expanded to tens of thousands of participants worldwide. In 2018, he founded CXN Advisory, a consultancy focused on helping CEOs and leaders align on strategic objectives, drawing from his experience as a college rower and his role as an organizational “coxswain.” After suffering a serious stroke during heart surgery in 2022, Whitmire's recovery deepened his commitment to prioritizing relational over transactional approaches in life and leadership. A Harvard graduate and California native, he is the co-author of Freed to Lead: F3 and the Unshackling of the Modern-day Warrior and is working on a new book, The 91 Percent Solution. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Tim Whitmire discuss:Growth through transformative life eventsCommunity as a remedy for isolationThe power of relational leadership practicesSustainable effort as a path to successTransforming workplace culture to foster connection Key Takeaways:Physical fitness and strong, authentic relationships provide vital support during recovery from life-changing challenges, fostering resilience and growth.Structured communities address loneliness by creating opportunities for meaningful relationships, shared purpose, and mutual support.Leadership that focuses on relational connections rather than transactional interactions builds trust, engagement, and stronger teams.Prioritizing sustainable effort through approaches like the “91% Solution” promotes balanced achievement, long-term productivity, and personal well-being. "I feel like that 91 percent expectation is a reasonable standard. If you're hitting things with 91 percent consistency and expect that of other people, I think that's acceptable.” — Tim Whitmire Connect with Tim Whitmire: Website: https://www.cxnadvisory.com/Email: tim@cxnadvisory.comX (Twitter): https://x.com/trwhitmire_obt & https://x.com/advisorycxnInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/cxn_advisory See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Hanz Jimuel AlvarezAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. His new book, "The Sex Talk You Never Got", was written to help men get past sexual struggle and John Eldredge (Author of Wild at Heart) says this book is "...the most important book on sexuality that you will ever read." Gary Thomas has been on my wish list for quite some time! His books have helped me have a better marriage. Husbands and wives stumble in many ways and sometimes we have struggles with toxic people. Gary says, "All toxic people are difficult, but not every difficult person is toxic." Today we talk about how to cherish our wife, toxic relationships, expectations and of course Biblical wisdom on how to live our lives well. When should I walk away from a toxic person and what are some permissible boundaries I can have with family members? How do I know God is speaking to me? Did you promise to Cherish your wife on your wedding day? If so, have you thought about what that means? Why should we have Qualitative goals for our marriage vs Quantitive goals? What can church do for us and what can we do for the church? Are you looking for something more out of life OR want to email a comment about the podcast? If so, email me. Today, I am excited to have here with me Dr. Tunis Hunt. He is an expert in chiropractors and the doctor at Hunt for Wellness. This chiropractic wellness center helps people uncover and resolve their underlying health problems to achieve optimal health. Dr. Hunt grew up in a chiropractic household. His father is a chiropractor, which helps him see the impact of it on the lives of people. As a child, Dr. Hunt could not fully grasp the power of chiropractic until he enrolled in the chiropractic school, where he learned the philosophy of chiropractic and its potential. A chiropractor's job is to evaluate the vertebral column of the spine and put something called an adjustment on those areas to remove subluxations and enhance the body's ability to function. With 18 years of experience, Dr. Hunt is passionate about helping others by relieving them of pain and improving overall health. He encourages us to understand the wonders chiropractic can do to our body because everyone deserves a happier and healthier life. In this episode, Dr. Hunt explains why people should not be afraid to try chiropractic and feel the relief they'll get. He also talks about the recommended frequency of chiropractic adjustments, reversing type two diabetes, and finding the right diet for your body. [9:32] Try Chiropractic and Feel The Comfort you'll Get From It - There are different styles and techniques; some are less physical. Some techniques are simple or as non-invasive as the way the energy flows through the body. - As a profession, part of what they do is to help people understand what we're doing and not doing. - Sometimes, the adjustments are sensationalized on social media to make people think it's a violent act. What you see on TikTok is different from what you'll get at most chiropractic offices nationwide. - Chiropractic is an art, so how chiropractors adjust and what they do can be slightly different. Google reviews and recommendations are a great way to find the best chiropractor. - Chiropractic care has so many options available. Unless you live or work close to the chiropractic office, receiving high-quality, dependable care may be difficult. So, choose a chiropractor that is close to you. [22:51] What Is the Recommended Frequency for The Chiropractic Adjustments? - Depending on what chiropractic you go to, you may have been sold or influenced to do a gamut of different adjustments. - At the very minimum, from a wellness perspective, most patients do it about once every month. - Patients come in twice a month if they're more tuned in to wellness and want to do it more frequently. - Some love to make adjustments multiple times a week. [29:38] Having a Back Pain? How Chiropractor may help - The most common reason people seek chiropractic care is unspecified back pain. - Other reasons people seek chiropractic care are neck pain, headache, and sciatica. - It is up to the chiropractors to help people understand why they might want to consider lifestyle chiropractic care because back pain or other reasons are just symptoms of a bigger issue, and the bigger issue could benefit from ongoing lifestyle care. - The nice thing about chiropractic is there are so many nuances that a practitioner can choose to go down and specialize in. - It is about just finding that solution. Keep looking. Don't give up. Chiropractors are here to help. Life's too short to live miserably. [36:48] Reverse Type Two Diabetes by Doing This - The key to reverse diabetes is through diet. Storing too much glucose and an overabundance of simple carbohydrates all lead to diabetes. - This high omega-6 diet, which is prevalent in vegetable oils, raises insulin resistance, the body's inability to pull the glucose out of the blood. And therefore, we get these things called ages or advanced glycogen in products. - The number one reason people die from diabetes is cardiovascular health. They're not dying from diabetes. They're dying from the diseases connected to it. - It's all about recognizing what you put in your body matters. Whether good or bad, your current health status is 100% your responsibility. [44:53] Carnivore Diet: The Surprising Benefits of this Elimination Diet - At first, Dr. Hunt used a balanced diet perspective. He taught people the plant-based diet with some meat but primarily consisted of eating fruits and vegetables. - Dr. Paul Saladino inspires Dr. Hunt to switch from a plant-based base to a meat-based diet. - In addition to chiropractic, Dr. Hunt runs a Healthy Impact Man coaching program. And as he coaches men, he helps them get them closer to an animal-based diet than they were. [53:10] Meat or Plant-Based Diet? Which One Should You Choose? - There's a difference between a healthy diet and an optimal diet. A healthy diet is just the avoidance of refined carbohydrates, refined sugars, refined seed oils, and trans fats. Stephen Arterbrun is the founder and chairman of New Life Ministries and host of the number one nationally syndicated Christian counseling talk show, New Life Live! He's got over 15,000,000 books sold and is listened to by over 3,000,000 people a week. He's got two new books coming out August 1st. "Understanding and Loving Your Child in a Screen-Saturated World" and "Understanding and Loving Your College Student" are two topics I love to learn more about. Sometimes our first response as men is to react with Anger. Today we'll talk about ways to Protect and Connect with your child. When it comes to the internet, it is important to have a plan for your family and implement it. Here are a few questions we talk about: -How can we respond with something other than Anger? -What are some strategies for Protecting our children from the dangers that can come from screens and the internet? -Why should our kids learn how to say NO? Fair is where Pigs Win Ribbons! I love this line from Stephen. Great, funny dad response for when my daughters tell me "Dad, that's NOT FAIR!" We have been blessed to have Jay Millar hanging around this community for a couple of years. He founded My Virtual Dad and just released his new book, Be A Hero in Your Home: The Ultimate Playbook for Men to Succeed at Home, Work and Life. The Air Force has hired Jay to coach their Cadets to learn and implement this Playbook so that they are successful in all areas of life. Jay grew up without a great homelife or a great dad. Abuse, bankruptcy, alcoholism and anger issues are some of what Jay grew up with. He knew that he did not want to be a dad like his and it was up to him to figure out how to be a great dad! And now he vulnerably shares his mistakes and what he has learned about being a great father in his book. -Who are the 5 people you spend the most time with? -What are the daily, consistent actions you do that contribute to your success? -What is THE measure of being a successful man? Great story about how University of Colorado coach Bill McCartney answered this question and retired from being the coach of one of the top football teams in the country. Mark Hancock shares his story of how and why Trail Life got started, differences between boys and girls and what boys are looking for. Mark has 2 Masters Degrees in the Mental Health Counseling field, had his own private practice, and was a youth and college Pastor. He's been a guest on Focus on the Family, James Dobson's Family Talk and is a speaker at conferences across the country. He's been married over 30 years, lives in Greenville, South Carolina and has 2 sons. And he has a great sense of humor! He keeps myself and those around him laughing all the time. His son wrote a note explaining why he left the Boy Scouts. It was 3 words. "You weren't brave." We talked about the 3 questions that boys want answered when they are in a group: Who's in Charge? Who's with Me? What is our Mission? Boys are wired for risk and competition. Boys learn empathy by let our sons lose. We must not shield them from the opportunity to learn from losing. Boys need to learn language so that they understand their emotions and can learn empathy. Boys are hungry for people that pay attention to them. This generation of kids are: Unguided Ungrounded Unappreciated Uninspired And that leads to them being "Unproductive Narcissists". Trail Life USA focuses on Character, Leadership and Adventure. It is Christ Centered and Boy Focused. As a girl dad, this conversation helped me understand more differences between boys and girls and also helped me understand some things about how I grew up. Men: we need to be Brave, not passive. GOD spoke of this 6,000 years ago. From the Book of Genesis: Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry?" Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (NOT DOING what is right is a Sin of Omission) "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke) Weekly Challenge: Find something to connect with your child on this week. 6 Bonus Points if you can also find an emotion to walk through, sit with it and ask Jesus to sit in it with you. The last few episodes I've shared how I had 3 angry responses to my wife in the same week. I was shocked that I had done this once, much less 3 times in the same week! I was searching Audible for a new book and Audible suggested "Marriage Triggers". What a cool God Wink. So I downloaded the book and asked the author to join us on the podcast! Excited to share my conversation with Amber Lia, author of Marriage Triggers, Parenting Scripts, Food Triggers and Triggers: Exhanging Parents Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses. Some highlights from this episode: -"Holy Pauses" -"What are you making an Idol in Your Life?" -H.A.L.T. -"Overwhelm is a choice" -"Is it Worth it?" -"Lovingly tell me something that you would like to see improved." And there is a GREAT CHALLENGE at the end or this one! One of the greatest challenges we face as men is finding a like-minded band of brothers we can rely on when needed and we can serve as they need us. In the ease of modernity, we've been led to believe we can and have to go at life alone. That just isn't the case. My guest today is the President of F3 Nation, whom a lot of you are familiar with. His name is Frank Schwartz and he goes by the nickname, “Dark Helmet.” Today, Frank and I talk about the power of fitness, fellowship, and faith in a man's life, overcoming the feeling of dissatisfaction, becoming a high-impact man, our desperation for love and recognition (yes, even in men), and the positive benefits of engaging in dangerous, dirty, and difficult pursuits. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS: Helping men find their mission Providing structure to men through fitness Strengthening the relationship with yourself, others, and your creator What the church is supposed to feel like Leading in a decentralized organization The importance of strong yet simple culture What our world presents as true is often wrong Want maximum health, wealth, relationships, and abundance in your life?
