Continuing the Exodus series, Pastor Ron walks through plagues two through seven: frogs, gnats, flies, the death of livestock, boils, and hail. He ties each plague to the Egyptian god it dismantles: Heqet, Geb, Uatchit, Hathor and Apis, Isis and Imhotep, and Seth. The point of the plagues isn't only to defeat false gods. It is to announce to the whole world that there is one God, Yahweh.The message wrestles with the tension between God's sovereignty and human responsibility. Pharaoh hardens his own heart first, and only later does God harden it. Pastor Ron turns to Romans 9 to show that God is free to display his power however he chooses, and that we have no standing to put him on trial. He applies this to our lives: the tendency to negotiate with God's word, to repent only to escape consequences, and to come to worship while unreconciled with others. He also contrasts confessing God with truly fearing him. The message closes with the question Pharaoh's own servants ask, "How long?", and a call to surrender before our choices ruin the people around us. Pastor Ron also previews Sunday's message, "Why Does a Loving God Kill Women and Children?"

In this message, Pastor Ron continues the Awakening series by looking at the prodigal son and the restlessness that can live in the human heart. We all long for purpose, joy, belonging, and satisfaction, but those desires can never be fully met apart from the Father. If you've ever felt like something is still missing, this message is a reminder that the ache in your heart may be pointing you back to God.

Some of the hardest questions in the "What Does the Bible Say?" series come from real life: a friend leaving their marriage, a son or daughter living in open rebellion, a loved one who has run from God. In this message, Pastor Ron works through how a Christian should respond, starting with how seriously God takes sin. He then walks through how Scripture calls us to confront in love, keep our standards consistent, and never close the door to restoration.He draws a clear line between a believer who is living in open rebellion and a lost person who doesn't know Christ. Love and truth belong together, and a relationship is not the same as an endorsement. Whatever it costs, the way back to Jesus must stay open.

I wish there were more pastors like Ron Hoffman at Mountain City Church in Anchorage. Of course there are many I know and respect who have also done a wonderful job preaching the full counsel of God but I can only interview one at a time. Pastor Hoffman understands that God created three institutions. Family, Church and Government. And, by the way, all three are stained by sin. Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8, Ecclesiastes 7:20, Romans 5:12, Isaiah 64:6But, for some reason, although the church has no problem dealing with the downfalls of family and church struggling with sin, Government is to be shunned.  Stay away. Bad. Don't want to get soiled. It's "political".But here's the deal. Politics is nothing more than the way communities organize and communicate on how to address challenges and solutions for human flourishing in society. This week's sermon from Exodus 20, titled "Wearing God's Name," invites us into the powerful story of God's rescue and the covenant He establishes with His people. Pastor Ron Zimmer explained that after delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, God called them into a unique relationship, making them His "most precious possession" and a "kingdom of priests" (Exodus 19:5-6). This means they were set apart to represent Him to the entire world.The message focused on the first three of God's "Ten Words," not merely as laws, but as foundational principles for this covenant relationship. First, God declares, "You must have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). In a world filled with many gods, Yahweh asserted His singular identity as the one true God, demanding exclusive devotion and rejecting anything that would distract His people from Him. Second, God commands, "Do not make an idol for yourself" (Exodus 20:4). This was a radical departure from the common practice of the time. The sermon highlighted that God doesn't need carved images because He has already created an image for Himself: humanity. As Genesis 1:26-27 teaches, we are made in the *Imago Dei*—the living, breathing image of God—carrying His likeness everywhere we go.Finally, the sermon delved into the third word: "Do not use Yahweh your God's name as if it had no significance" (Exodus 20:7). Pastor Ron reinterpreted this not just as avoiding profanity, but as a call to actively *carry* God's name with profound significance. Drawing from passages like Exodus 28:29 and Numbers 6:22-27, which describe priests carrying Israel's names and placing God's name on the people, we understand that believers are called to represent God to the world. Our lives are meant to uphold the holiness of His name, as Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:9-10, "Our Father who is in heaven, uphold the holiness of your name." This means that as followers of Jesus, we are the "only Bible the world is reading," called to reflect God's humility, humanity, and hope in everything we do. This aspiration culminates in the vision of Revelation 22:4, where God's name is on His people's foreheads, signifying a perfect reflection of His image.Ultimately, the sermon reminded us that while the standard for God's kingdom is perfection, which we cannot achieve on our own, Jesus came to pay the debt for our sin. By receiving His gift, we are empowered not just to be part of the kingdom, but to actively participate in God's will on earth, carrying His name and reflecting His light to a world desperately in need of hope.
