Matt Hammitt joins us this week with some stories a lot of us can relate to. He's married and has four children and his son was born with half of a heart. He's the former lead singer of Sanctus Real from 1996-2016. At the beginning, his wife was on the tour with the band. He details His book Lead Me: Finding Courage to Fight for Your Marriage, Children and Faith is very vulnerable talking about the challenges of being on the road without your wife and family, his son almost dying when he was born, not knowing how to deal with marital conflict, imposter syndrome and more. Even though Matt and I talk about some difficulties that we've experienced, we bonded and laughed often throughout this episode. -What should you do when your wife "TRIGGERS" you? -How do you and your wife Grieve? -When you are going through -Does your wife want you to lead your family? -What words has Matt used to work through Imposter Syndome? -Where did the song Lead Me come from? -Is who we hope to be really how people we love see us? So excited to have Andy Archer with us today. He's a 27 year old Starting Pitcher for the Savannah Bananas. He tells us the journey through college, the dissapointment about the minor league draft, joining the workforce and then into how teaching a group of kids at Sunday School changed his life. As I talked with Andy, I put myself in his shoes and also thought about what his parents thought about the decisions he made in his life. -risks he took -surfing on lunch break -living a comfortable life vs living a life with purpose and using your God giving abilities -reading the Bible cover to cover -living away from all of his family and looking for ways to serve -how can you catch your kids imagination and be influenced by things that are good, true and beautiful Some questions to ponder: -when are times of life when someone can be depressed? -what do you do when you feel like your sin makes you not worthy of God's love? -what are some of the hardest words to say? Something I'm focused on is finding ways to have fun with my wife and daughters and also having fun while we are together. Whether we are playing sports, watching videos, doing houswork, going on an adventure day or just hanging out, it's important for me remember to have fun, laugh and connecting with my family. I wanted to record this podcast as a reminder for us dads to have FUN! Sometimes fun requires us to be uncomfortable. Andy talks about how he was below average dancer and one of the things he loves the most is the choreographed dancing that the Bananas do. He tells a cool story about doing the "Thunderstruck" dance. His story made me think about when I relax and am goofy with my family and let go of caring about being judged by other people. The Savannah Bananas are a lot of fun! Check them out in person with your family and on YouTube! Challenge: Have a conversation with one of your guy friends and read the same chapter of the Bible and discuss what each of you got out of it. The movie Cuties came out and he had a young daughter and Trent knew something had to be done. We talk about some of the authors: a mafia crime boss, Hercules, Kirk Cameron and Trail Life are some of the authors. Trent talk about a goal he has everyday with his kids besides read books. He's got a simple goal of playing with each of his kids for at least 10 minutes. Trent also shares what life is like with 4 kids under 5 years old and what he does to prioritize his wife. He shares that he could do a lot better in this area. I thought it was cool that Trent was open, transparent and vulnerable about this part of his life. He talks about the total disaster his life could have become from money, riches, wanting to belong, fame, success, etc. -When challenged, default to Sincerety and Truth -God Hates Lying Lips -Default to Truth and Love -Disagree without Hating each other (Civil Discourse) What does it mean to be a Reporter or a Reformer? Scott vulnerably shares a story about his wife crying because she thought her new husband couldn't provide enough money for them AND that he would never be able to provide a decent income. From this day, Scott worked on developing himself so that he could become the man God intended him to be. The Biblical phrase "Striving for tthe Masteries" speaks of the athlete's pursuit of excellence, and is applied in the Bible to our running the race of life as we pursue the moral and personal excellence of Christlikeness. Don Beebe was the first player to be a part of 6 Super Bowl teams and is famous for chasing down Leon Lett. Deion Sanders and Don Beebe both had the combine record of 4.25 in the 40. Don shares the behind the scene story when he was at the combine. Insane! So many miracle stories in Don's story. Out of football for 3 years, one of the colleges that had recruited him out of high school called and asked if he'd come back and play. His grandfather was not a good man, but Don's dad succeeded as a dad even though he had an awful father. He changed the Legacy of the Beebe name. After he retired from football, he created The House of Speed and has trained over 200,000 athletes. He coached high school and won state championships and he is now the head coach at Aurora University. He was able to sign a 10 year contract and demanded some specific things to be included in his contract. -Why do bad things happen to good people? Romans 8:28 -Why did Don run down Leon Lett in the SuperBowl? -What is the #1 attribute we need to be a great leader? -How do we know if we are actually a Man of God? -What's something you learned from legendary coach Marv Levy? -How does revenge affect you and what are the ripple effects? Some of my takeaways: "If it's about playing time, then we don't have a relationship." "What you are at home IS what you really are." "Discipline out of love" "Character will be revealed in every game you play." "Things are Caught not Taught." "Sin will keep you from this book." "It's important that you know the playbook. If you don't know the playbook, you can't perform in life." Excited to share this episode with you. Last year, I got to see an early screening of THE FORGE with The Kendrick Brothers and some of the actors. You may have seen some of The Kendrick Brothers movies: FACING THE GIANTS, WAR ROOM, FIREPROOF, OVERCOMER, COURAGEOUS and others. Their new movie comes on 8/23/2024! Please get your tickets today. Great to see with your family or a group of friends. On this episode, we talk about fears, spiritual warfare, how they got into movies, discipleship, Adam Wainwright, and of course the new movie. A short bit about the movie: The Forge tells the story of Isaiah Wright, a 19 year old who lives for basketball and video games. A year out of high school, he still has no job, no plans and no idea of how to be a man. At odds with his single mom, he was given an ultimatum - to step up or move out. And Isaiah is forced to deal with his past, sacrifice his selfishness and discover how God might have a great purpose for his life. The cast of THE FORGE includes familiar farces such as Priscila Shirer (WAR ROOM, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE), Cameron Arnett (OVERCOMER, STAND YOUR GROUND), Karen Abercrombie (WAR ROOM, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3) and newcomer Aspen Kennedy. How you can help: #1 Go see the movie! Opening weekend is very important. By doing so, it helps boost the sales numbers which encourages the movie theaters to add more showing times and to keep it in the theater for a longer time. #2 Share the movie with family, friends, and share on social media. Sam lives in Colorado with his wife and three sons. He's into camping, flyfishing and CrossfFit. His new book, "The Sex Talk You Never Got", was written to help men get past sexual struggle and John Eldredge (Author of Wild at Heart) says this book is "...the most important book on sexuality that you will ever read." This book helps men: regain a vigorous and vibrant sexuality with the context of God's design understand how purity culture has needlessly put men into a state of conflict trade shame and confusion for a sexuality of innocence and wonder confront porn use and lust through the lens of God's kindness and find the path to freedom On this episode we talk about how children get harmed and the effects of this. As parents, we need to be aware of what happened to us and also how to protect and guide our children. This is an important topic to talk about since 80% of men struggle with lust regularly. -How can we learn how to respond instead of react? -What are some Biblical examples that we might relate to? -Where does our guilt and shame come from and what happens to our nervous system when shame kicks in? Gary Thomas has been on my wish list for quite some time! His books have helped me have a better marriage. Husbands and wives stumble in many ways and sometimes we have struggles with toxic people. Gary says, "All toxic people are difficult, but not every difficult person is toxic." Today we talk about how to cherish our wife, toxic relationships, expectations and of course Biblical wisdom on how to live our lives well. When should I walk away from a toxic person and what are some permissible boundaries I can have with family members? How do I know God is speaking to me? Did you promise to Cherish your wife on your wedding day? If so, have you thought about what that means? Why should we have Qualitative goals for our marriage vs Quantitive goals? What can church do for us and what can we do for the church? Are you looking for something more out of life OR want to email a comment about the podcast? If so, email me. Mark Hancock shares his story of how and why Trail Life got started, differences between boys and girls and what boys are looking for. Mark has 2 Masters Degrees in the Mental Health Counseling field, had his own private practice, and was a youth and college Pastor. He's been a guest on Focus on the Family, James Dobson's Family Talk and is a speaker at conferences across the country. He's been married over 30 years, lives in Greenville, South Carolina and has 2 sons. And he has a great sense of humor! He keeps myself and those around him laughing all the time. His son wrote a note explaining why he left the Boy Scouts. It was 3 words. "You weren't brave." We talked about the 3 questions that boys want answered when they are in a group: Who's in Charge? Who's with Me? What is our Mission? Boys are wired for risk and competition. Boys learn empathy by let our sons lose. We must not shield them from the opportunity to learn from losing. Boys need to learn language so that they understand their emotions and can learn empathy. Boys are hungry for people that pay attention to them. This generation of kids are: Unguided Ungrounded Unappreciated Uninspired And that leads to them being "Unproductive Narcissists". Trail Life USA focuses on Character, Leadership and Adventure. It is Christ Centered and Boy Focused. As a girl dad, this conversation helped me understand more differences between boys and girls and also helped me understand some things about how I grew up. Men: we need to be Brave, not passive. GOD spoke of this 6,000 years ago. From the Book of Genesis: Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry?" Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (NOT DOING what is right is a Sin of Omission) "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Listen in to a very real conversation with Dan Laure. He has a wonderful family, is a great leader and is a close friend of mine. It's been exciting seeing him focus on what's important and going after it. He never had a great father figure growing up. His biological dad left when he was three. His mom continually made poor choices. The men in her life were heavy drinkers and abusive. Dan had every reason to harbor anger and be resentful. Here are some questions that we talk about and maybe you have asked in your life too: -Why should I forgive someone who does not deserve forgiveness? -How am I so bad that I caused my dad to leave? -Why do I keep doing more, but yet still feel like something is missing in my life? -Am I doing enough? Matthew 18:21-22 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times." Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don't forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Fun, fast moving conversation with Jonathan Fanning. Jonathan found out at an early age that he liked to fix things and make them better. While he was in college he started down the path of being a business consultant. Imagine being in college and thinking you could step in and "fix" Fortune 500 Companies. He started down that path and it worked. He's also worked closely with Matthew Kelly, yes that Matthew Kelly! He had a monk as a mentor and shares some stories and wisdom from that relationship. And we talk about about how he works with kids to become entrepenuers. Have you had a Frying Pan Moment? What is the Know/Do GAP? How can I help my kids get a business started? What are some simple things we can schedule over Easter break? Here is a link to a cool video "Last Time" and Jonathan's 7 Day "Who Are You Becoming?"
