"colorism is a social system. It permeates all facets of society and culture. And what it is, essentially, is a social hierarchy or a stratification, where people with lighter skin tones are at the top of the hierarchy, especially if…their light skin coincides with things like straighter hair or lighter eye colors. And people with darker skin tones and kinkier hair textures, broader features, are relegated and marginalized to the bottom of the hierarchy…and it depends on your gender, your socioeconomic class, more or less." - Dr. Sarah L Webb in the Forbes Magazine. Dr. Sarah L Webb and I discuss the origin of colorism, its consequences, how to heal from it, what a day without colorism would look like and more. 0:00 - 10:15 What is colorism? 10:15 - 17:02 What is the root of colorism? 17:02 - 33:51 Colorism hierarchies: Who leads the conversation? 33:51 - End Colorism Healing! Dr. Sarah L. Webb joins me to explore DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) along with Colorism. This is a fascinating conversation about some important aspects about how challenges are showing up in the workplace based off the socially constructed meanings of skin tones. In this second Part the interview with Dr. Webb, we discuss: *How colorism is part of why we are not making more progress with racial justice and equity. How recognizing the personal privileges and biases we all have helps us improve our relationships and our position in the social fabric. Accepting that we are not individually responsible for racism and extending that compassion from ourselves to others. And that while race is a social construct, skin tone is a biological fact with socially constructed meanings. Dr. Sarah L. Webb is the founder of Colorism Healing, a global leader in raising awareness, shifting attitudes, and taking action to address colorism with corporate, consumer, and community strategies. Hey Y'all! *I do not own any of the resources / music provided on this podcast and epsiodes. * *Correction, this is ep 10 not 11* This is our first panel discussion for Kumo's Unfiltered Convos podcast and I'm so excited for you all to listen to this episode. In this necessary and needed panel discussion we talk about colorism and how light skin people benefit from it and how they have a responsibility to center dark skin /brown skin Black people. The Black women , Queer/Non-binary femmes on this panel bring their own perspectives and share their experiences with colorsim which affects dark skin/ brown skin people the most who are mostly discriminated against because of their skin tone. Colorism is literally killing the Black community and though I'm not an expert I believe we in the Black community have a HUGE responsibility to center the most impacted by its deadly harm. We also touch on light skin privilege / mixed race privilege ,colorsim and it's orgin and how it all stems from slavery. We touch on the "acceptable Black girl "not having white features and how colorism continues to show up in our community! If you're listening to this episode today, especially if you're dark skin and brown skin and have been taught to hate your beautiful skin and you have non-white beauty standards/ features, I hope this audio love letter brings healing to your inner child! -Kumo Resources /Links: Light Skinned Privilege/ Colorism Orgin Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE4Lo4TIc8Y 4yr Old Black Girl video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYM9rm3CK24 Dr. Sarah L. Dr. Sarah L. Webb is currently an Assistant Professor in the department of English and Modern Languages at the University of Illinois Springfield. Dr. Webb first wrote publicly about colorism in the summer of 2011 in a post titled: “Colorism: 5 Reasons I Haven’t Said Much… Yet.” After seeing the interest, positive responses, and negative reactions to her early writing on colorism, Dr. Webb recognized the need for a dynamic platform dedicated entirely to this issue. She also saw the need to focus on solutions, and so she launched the blog Colorism Healing in July 2013. The goals of Colorism Healing are to raise critical awareness about colorism as a global issue by providing a hub of information and resources, foster individual and collective healing as well as systemic solutions by producing, facilitating, and curating creative and critical work. In this episode, we talk about… The history of colorism, and its roots in anti-blackness. Understanding systemic inequalities that stem from colorism. How to navigate gaslighting in relation to colorism. Ways we can build trust and strengthen sisterhood among Black women of all skin tones. The intersection of colorism and patriarchy. The Word Wise Webb is a series that connects literacy with colorism healing (and related topics). Dr. Sarah L. Webb discusses how reading and writing and vocabulary (#WeeklyWord) apply to colorism healing through practical advice, quick tips, testimonies and stories, and intellectual ideas. --- In a world saturated by antiblackness, racism, and white supremacy we are conditioned to dislike a natural black aesthetic. We are conditioned to prefer a more white, European, or simply nonblack aesthetic. This episode is all about analyzing the antiblackness that drives much of our contemporary aesthetic "preferences." --- I launched Colorism Healing to raise critical awareness about #colorism by providing a hub of information and resources and to facilitate solutions and healing through creative and critical work. --- This initiative is unique because it has always focused on healing, self-care, and reconciliation, especially for black girls, black women, and other girls and women of color. --- My unpopular opinion, though, is that colorism affects all people regardless of their complexion, race, ethnicity, gender, or class. Therefore, everyone is responsible for helping to address the problem. However, I explain how it effects people quite differently based on those varying factors. Some people disproportionately benefit from this system and others are systemically marginalized. Some are zealous perpetrators while others are unwillingly complicit. --- As part of this mission, I've launched several initiatives, such as the Colorism Healing Writing Contest, and I invite you to explore more via the links below. Webb discusses how reading and writing and vocabulary (#WeeklyWord) apply to colorism healing through practical advice, quick tips, testimonies and stories, and intellectual ideas. --- In this episode I discuss how important it is to improve the language we use to talk about and to ourselves. Positive affirmations have been a major part of my mental health, self-care, and healing journey. African American women are often exposed to negative feedback, so it's especially important for us to learn to affirm ourselves when our broader culture does not, and often disparages us. #PositiveAffirmations --- I launched Colorism Healing to raise critical awareness about #colorism by providing a hub of information and resources and to facilitate solutions and healing through creative and critical work. --- This initiative is unique because it has always focused on healing, self-care, and reconciliation, especially for black girls, black women, and other girls and women of color. --- My unpopular opinion, though, is that colorism affects all people regardless of their complexion, race, ethnicity, gender, or class.
