2024 marks 20 years since the birth of social media. Since then, it has become a major communication force in the lives of teenagers' lives - a 2024 Pew survey claims that 93% of American youth use it, for example. Unsurprisingly, research on its impact has followed suit. But just how reliable are the conclusions in this new field of studies? In April 2024 HEC professors Tina Lowrey and L.J. Shrum co-signed a research paper with their former doctoral student Elena Fumagalli (H18), showing conflicting findings on the negative and positive effects of social media on youth. They warn against major policies and lawsuits founded on inconclusive studies and contradictory scientific research. Professors Lowrey and Shrum share with Breakthroughs their empirical study to try to make sense of a subject matter inflaming public debate. Hosted on Acast. If you don't have a map, you're lost. How do you know where you're going or even what the next step is? This is true whether you're navigating Middle Earth or content creation. We're here to help you get oriented. In this episode, we're taking marketing lessons from The Hobbit with the help of our special guest, CMO at ChurnZero, Hunter Montgomery.Together, we talk about drawing a map, finding a mentor who will push you out of your comfort zone, blocking and tackling, and getting your partners to tell your story.About our guest, Hunter MontgomeryHunter Montgomery is Chief Marketing Officer at ChurnZero, customer success platform providers. Hunter is a results-driven marketing professional with more than 25 years experience developing, executing and measuring global sales and marketing strategies and campaigns. He has held executive and upper management roles at Higher Logic, Vocus (now Cision), and Verizon. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Hobbit:Draw a map. Have a plan for your content from creation to promotion, reuse, repurposing and beyond. Hunter says, “You can't just start out thinking, ‘Well, I'm here and I want to get there. I'll figure it out along the way.' You gotta have a plan. You have a map. You will get things thrown at you and so know it's going to change a little bit along the way. But you just can't say, ‘Well, I'll know when I get there.' That doesn't really work.” The Hobbit starts with a map. And just like how the reader can find their bearings throughout the story by revisiting the map, a content map or plan is useful for marketers too. The map gives you your foundation to be prepared and guide you along the way. And it's also super satisfying to look back at your map and see how far you've come.Find a mentor who will push you out of your comfort zone. This is undoubtedly Gandalf. Because hobbits are creatures of comfort, it's Gandalf who gives Bilbo the push to go on an adventure. So find your Gandalf. Ian says, “It doesn't actually have to be someone you know. It could be someone you listen to on a podcast. It could be someone who is out in the culture, who you follow on Twitter, or it could be someone that you know personally.” He says, “Gandalf is the one who recognizes with Bilbo, ‘I think there's something unique about you, and I think that you need this push.' And it's just special. It's one of the great things about this story, is that Gandalf believes that Bilbo can do it.”Block and tackle. Hunter says, “Sometimes you just got to get the basic stuff done every day, little by little. Two months, three months, six months, a year later, you're where you needed to be. And I think people sometimes just track it out. They want the big and the brash. You gotta go big sometimes. You gotta take big risks and be creative. And I totally believe you have to do that. And when people zig, you gotta zag.  But a lot of other times, you just gotta get it done. And so I think Bilbo was the one who did that.”Partner up. Don't be the one telling your audience how great you are. Find partners who will do that for you. It builds credibility and trust. Hunter says, “It could be vendors, could be thought leaders, bringing them in. Have them talk, have them validate customers. Customers are great for content. We have a community, so you hear from them on that, but don't be the source. Just try to find other places, other people to tell your story, because they can do it better. And they're more legitimate in the eyes of the buyer in many ways.”Quotes*”Finding people to collaborate, there's co-marketing, there's co-creating. Co-creating content with your ideal customers or prospects is so important. Cause we always try to figure out like, ‘What do they want to hear? Why don't we just go make it with them?'” - Ian Faison*”The content needs to match the journey. Customer journey mapping is one way of doing it. But I think that that can be too specific to your actual exact journey of your customers. And I think you need to sometimes pull back from that and have a bigger picture. Have a map, but don't let it restrict what you do.” - Hunter Montgomery*”People are pretty poor at telling their own stories. But if you ask enough questions to get the right answers and dig in there, then you can really find those pearls of wisdom and put that stuff together in a really meaningful, digestible format.” - Ian Faison*”Just go after something. Take a leap of faith in something that you feel strongly is going to work. - Hunter MontgomeryTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Hunter Montgomery, CMO at ChurnZero[1:32] Hunter Montgomery's Hobbit-Inspired Marketing Insights[3:33] The Hobbit's Origin Story: From Bedtime Tales to Global Phenomenon[8:50] Marketing Lessons from Middle Earth[15:57] The Power of Maps in Storytelling and Marketing[21:49] Exploring Bilbo's Unassuming Heroism[22:48] Marketing Lessons from Gandalf's Mentorship[24:18] B2B Marketing Insights and Strategies[27:00] Leveraging Content and Partnerships in Marketing[31:47] Evolving Event Strategies and Content Creation[35:20] Navigating the Tech Stack and Data Integration[38:52] Strategic Content Planning and ExecutionLinksRead The HobbitConnect with Hunter on LinkedInLearn more about ChurnZeroAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Daiso Industries Co., Ltd., renowned for its ¥100 stores, has a captivating story behind its success. Founded by Hirotake Yano, a man of humble demeanor, Daiso has flourished into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise with thousands of stores across Japan and abroad. Yano's journey began modestly, operating out of a nondescript office with minimal staff. Despite its unassuming appearance, Daiso's headquarters serves as the nerve center for a company that boasts an impressive annual turnover of over ¥202 billion. What started as a venture selling goods out of a truck has burgeoned into a retail giant with around 2,000 stores nationwide. Daiso's uniqueness lies in its ¥100 concept, distinct from conventional dollar stores found in other countries. Unlike their counterparts, Daiso outlets stand alongside upscale boutiques and department stores, catering to a diverse clientele. Despite the absence of elaborate business plans or forecasting meetings, Daiso continues to expand rapidly, opening an average of 30 stores per month. Yano's unconventional approach to business is reflected in his philosophy of living day by day. With no fixed projections for store expansions, he entrusts the company's growth to destiny. This laid-back attitude belies a history of perseverance and resilience, stemming from Yano's experiences, including overcoming family bankruptcy and personal setbacks. The essence of Daiso's success lies in its commitment to quality and affordability. Despite the nominal price tag, Yano ensures that products meet stringent standards, debunking the myth that low price equates to inferior quality. Daiso's extensive product range, sourced globally, offers customers a diverse array of items, ranging from household essentials to novelty goods, all priced at ¥100. In addition to its domestic triumphs, Daiso has embarked on a strategic international expansion, setting up stores in countries like Singapore and Taiwan. Yano's cautious approach to overseas growth reflects his aversion to corporate greed, a principle he upholds steadfastly. As Daiso continues to evolve, it remains a testament to Yano's vision and the enduring appeal of the ¥100 phenomenon. Captivating (Cap-ti-va-ting): Daiso Industries Co., Ltd., renowned for its ¥100 stores, has a captivating story behind its success.Elaborate (E-lab-o-rate): Despite the absence of elaborate business plans or forecasting meetings, Daiso continues to expand rapidly.Unconventional (Un-con-ven-tion-al): Yano's unconventional approach to business is reflected in his philosophy of living day by day.Perseverance (Per-se-ver-ance): This laid-back attitude belies a history of perseverance and resilience, stemming from Yano's experiences.Affordability (Af-ford-a-bil-i-ty): The essence of Daiso's success lies in its commitment to quality and affordability. Kathryn was raised Catholic, but she only attended church on Easter Sunday.  Her Dad was raised in the Catholic church, went to Catholic school and was an altar boy.  She doesn't know the reasoning, but when he was raising them, religion wasn't important, and he seemed even be turned off by it.  One reason may be because Kathryn's grandmother (his mom) would go to mass in the morning and be drunk by 2:00pm.  As a child, If she would sleep over at a friend's house on a Saturday night, she would go to church with them on Sunday. Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and she remembers a place called "Rock Church" where they danced and spoke in tongues! Nothing stuck.  In her early 20's, she was wild. Partying all the time and after one extremely crazy night, decided she no longer wanted to live life that way.  So, Kathryn hit her knees and prayed to God for help.  Now, she may not have been raised in church. But she can tell you as sure as she typed this, God has been with her as far back as she can remember.  She would talk to him all the time.  He would answer.  It wasn't audible, but she could always hear him.  She can remember at 5 years old, as her Mom and Dad were in a drunken screaming fight, Ishe was crouched in a little bathroom of our military housing home.  She got on her knees, and cried out to God.  "Please, please take me back.  You've made a big mistake. You've put me in the wrong family."  Well, he didn't take her back. But things would get better for a while, before getting worse again. A few years later, she met Jon. He was Jewish. They bonded over their spiritual beliefs. She got married in a Japanese garden with a non-denominational pastor and she smashed the glass (Jewish tradition). They had children, and she did get them baptized. She knew this was important somehow but didn't really know why.  They moved to Florida and her Jewish husband became a follower of Jesus (that's a whole other fascinating story of how that happened). But, as he started learning about the teachings of Jesus, he would share with them.  They started going to a local church.  Then started having family meetings. The foundation was laid.  Enter "THE CHOSEN". The miniseries produced by Derral Eves and Dallas Jenkins. For the first time in Kathryn's whole life, it all makes sense! Pieces of the puzzle are fitting. The stories, the disciples, the places. It's like all the sudden, she sees in technicolor!!! When I found out she was interviewing Derral Eves, the Executive Producer of "The Chosen", she was so excited.  He did not disappoint.  Kathryn doesn't know where you are in your spiritual walk, but she knows this interview will have something in it for you.  No matter what your faith or background.  Oh and P.S... This episode kicks off Jon and Kathryn doing podcasts interviews together. They will still have guests they interview separately, but anytime they think when they have a guest or message both their audiences will enjoy, they will do a collab!
