Dear Listeners, Let me break the 4th wall, real quick, Jay here. As I was preparing this episode where Kim and I go into the concept of heuxism and what it means to be a heaux, bringing up different scenarios in the quick chat, agreeing that a woman who is liberated and truly free will never be a heaux, taking time to acknowledge how our perspectives have changed with our experiences, and chatting about our perspective with our parenting of our daughters: This is where I want to stop and pause. This episode, for me, works as an archive of auditory history and as I was editing, I couldn't help but want this episode to be something my daughter hears when the time is appropriate. I want her to hear herself reflected in the chat we recorded. But most of all, I want her to know that she is a powerful woman (bc she will be an adult when she listens to this >.
In this compelling podcast episode, Kim & Jay embark on a riveting exploration of womanism and feminism, delving into their similarities, differences, problems, and impact. Join them as they dissect the shared objectives of these two powerful movements, striving for gender equality and dismantling oppressive systems. Listen in as they uncover the nuanced perspectives and approaches both movements embody, from feminism's broader focus on societal gender equality to womanism's emphasis on intersectionality and cultural experiences. However, Kim & Jay also confront the challenges that arise within these movements, including critiques of exclusion and the struggle for recognition nor the proper advocacy in healthy care. Despite the concerns, the ladies celebrate the transformative impact of womanism and feminism, from legislative reforms to personal empowerment. Through engaging discussions and inspiring anecdotes, Kim & Jay navigate the intricate tapestry of these movements, fostering dialogue for a more inclusive and equitable future. Moments of truth are something we always advocate for here on the Soul Sisters Sunday platform. Thus, today, we pose a potentially difficult question: Are you a good friend? Both Kim and Jay are frank and confident in their responses to this query. The ladies answered the question about themselves before asking each other. It's interesting to hear what they have to say, but you gotta tune in for that! Kim and Jay also talk about ways to be a good friend. Surprisingly, they both agree that being a "sometimes" friend isn't a good thing. You know? That friend that only calls you when they want something but you usually don't hear from them? Yeaaaaa it's time to reevaluate that connection! Now that the Soul Sisters have answered the question about themselves, it's time for you to ask it too. Continue to hold yourselves accountable as you grow Don't forget to follow us on social media: @soulsisterssundaypodcast. https://linktr.ee/soulsisterssundaypodcast
It's been a minute, but it's back like it never left! It wouldn't be right to go through the season without doing a "Dear Podcasters" segment. However, it's a little different from the previous season. Instead of highlighting 3 podcasts (Jay's pick, Kim's pick, and a joint listen), the Soul Sisters listened to 2 podcasts together. The podcasts they listened to are: For the Souls Podcast: @forthesoulspodcast Pink Priestess Radio: @pinkpriestessradio It's a great feeling to listen to more podcasts led by women of color. Both have exciting stories to tell while sharing touching experiences. Kim and Jay found much of their material relatable, and hopefully others will too. Everyone has an opinion, but how often do they speak up about their unpopular opinion? No worries. If no one wants to say it, Kim and Jay will! In this mini episode, the Soul Sisters talk about their unpopular opinions. One of them believes that greasy food is not automatically delicious and the other believes that self-proclaimed gurus are scammers. You gotta listen to find out who thinks what! Everybody will experience loss at some point in their life. Loss of a pet, loss of a friend, loss of an income—whatever that may be—we all go through it. But how do we grieve through it? Kim and Jay will tell you how! The ladies start off by defining what grief is. There are so many meanings, but they all come to the same conclusion: Grief is natural! Does your definition of grief align with what the Soul Sisters talked about? Jay makes a point that can hit home for many people. She talks about grieving when she was younger and not knowing what it is or how to work through it. Thankfully, she knows better and is working on ways to keep living her life. It's safe to say that younger Jay would be happy about this acknowledgment and that this path of healing happened. It's no secret that Kim has an issue with certain words. “Grief” is no different. To her, it's turning into a buzzword, and people are just using it to excuse their behavior. In Kim's eyes, grief is something that should be taken seriously and not thrown around so much. Do you agree with Kim? Speak up and let us know! They also share personal experiences with different types of losses and the resources that are available to help with the grieving process. Hey listeners! It's time to get organized! Organization is an important part of life, especially when you have a podcast. Even though they have different ways to stay organized, they were able to come up with something to keep their platform afloat (mostly thanks to Jay). Color coordinated spreadsheets have become their best friend! Kim is very honest about not being the most organized person. Even though her spaces look messy, she seems to know where everything is at. Jay also brings up the videos of people organizing their home and work spaces. Do those videos tend to reel you in? Yup, us too! Jay makes a valid point that people often ignore. Being a methodical person doesn't mean you're rigged. The two aren't always connected and that's something we should remind ourselves. Have some structure but also have some fun! Hackers? Online Predators? Dusty looking Tik-Tok videos? What is going on here? The internet can be a fun place, but with that we must be careful. The Soul Sisters come together to talk about internet safety. Sometimes, it feels a bit much but being protected is always a priority. Jay talks about the importance of having a strong password. Shoutout to her for making sure all the Soul Sisters accounts are safe! Even though it seems annoying at times, it can be helpful. Hackers are always on the prowl for that come up, but with a complicated password it's less likely they will succeed. Take a listen to see how important fancy passwords are for them. It wouldn't be Kim if she didn't have a story. Unfortunately, she was a victim of a Cash App scam not too long ago and she is ready to tell what happened. Just like many other scams, they were able to convince her and left with her close to nothing. It may not seem like a big deal, but to her it was very traumatizing. She even shares how they are able to impersonate merchants on Google with a fake phone number. It seems like scammers can be intelligent people, but they use them for all the wrong reasons. Jay and Kim had experiences with catfishing. At one point, Jay was accused of being a catfish. She is as real as they come so to make such an accusation is insane! Thankfully, Jay was able to put these people in their place but it's a reminder that these kind of people exist in the internet world. Kim also tells the story of how her pictures were stolen on two different occasions and used for fake profiles. Maybe they should've called MTV and the producers of "Catfish" instead of taking matters into their own hands. In this day and age, everyone has had some type of interaction with the internet. It's pretty hard to avoid. Just remember to always stay safe so you can have a positive experience with it. We made it, y'all!! It's 2023!! Kim and Jay are looking forward to the great things coming their way this year. However, that also means making some changes along the way. Kim talks about setting boundaries but in a different way. Boundaries aren't always a no, but sometimes can be a “yes, and…” Have you ever heard of this before? Take a listen and find out what that is. Jay is looking forward to enjoying her experiences more. The saying “stop and smell the roses” will be her focus this year. It'll give her a chance to really see and feel the effort she is putting in. Want to hear more details on what this really means to her? Turn up the volume and tune in! They also mention some things they would like to see happen with the podcast this year. 2023 is looking pretty good for the Soul Sisters! It's that time of the year again. With everyone getting so caught up in the Christmas spirit, sometimes we tend to forget that there are other holidays to celebrate. Kim and Jay are here to gladly remind you. The ladies go over a list of different celebrations from around the world. Some of them they are familiar with, and some are very new to them. Kim may have butchered the pronunciation of a couple of them, but you can't fault the woman for trying. Jay also discusses how other cultures celebrate as a family and the differences between American holidays. You'll have to listen to find out how. Did anyone else know about the Christmas Witch? Jay brings up the Italian tradition that is slowly gaining recognition in America. She was the one who told Kim, and now they are telling everyone. Look at how they are spreading the knowledge. As always, the Soul Sisters Sunday Podcast wants everyone to do what makes them happy. Regardless of what a person celebrates or believes in, it's all about celebrating as you see fit (if you even choose not to celebrate). Happy holidays, and stay safe! There are plenty of conversations about long distance relationships, but how often do we hear about long distance friendships? Well Kim and Jay are here to talk about it! Kim and Jay have made it very clear that they have been friends since high school and have put in the work to maintain the friendship. Even though they aren't around the corner from each other they value the friendship and find ways to make it work. Being miles away from each other has some challenges but with the effort it can blossom into something beautiful. The ladies talk about the vulnerability they have with each other, the communication that is needed and the reciprocity that happens in a good friendship. Hopefully listeners are able to see the beauty in long distance friendships and consider some of these tips as a way to strengthen their own. Kim & Jay are at it again! They are ready to dig a little deeper into the different approaches to therapy, but this time with another sister. They welcome Hannitah into the conversation to explore the many different avenues. Hannitah is a long-term sister who happens to work in the psychology field. She was willing to share her personal experiences as well as break down the different types of therapy that are available. Even though they couldn't talk about all of them, they were able to converse about some good ones! In a previous conversation, Kim mentioned that it's hard to tell a person to seek therapy, so she took it upon herself to ask Hannitah how to go about this. She made some good points that Kim never thought about. Listen in to find out how Hannitah answered Kim, and let us know if you agree! Jay brings up group therapy and her hesitancy about it. Thanks to our dear Hannitah, we have a better understanding of what happens in group sessions. It's not a "pity party" like we see in the movies and can actually be beneficial when done correctly. Are you unsure of what group therapy is? This episode will definitely give you an answer and clarity! As always, it's great to invite others into important conversations like this. A special shoutout to Hannitah for stepping into our space and sharing so much with us! We love you forever! The Soul Sisters are always open to talking about mental health but this time they are asking a different question. Which one would you rather have? Money or Mental Health? Is there a connection between the two? Let's talk about it! In her true fashion, Kim believes that it is possible to obtain both. Regardless of what that path looks like she believes having a healthy state of mind as well as a healthy bank account should be the end result. Jay on the other hand explains why mental health should come first and money doesn't solve all the problems. The ladies are so different in their opinions so it's always fun to tune in to their banter. Are you like Kim and wanting both? Or are you like Jay and trying to heal mentally? We would like to know! It's Latinx Heritage Month! Well, it's celebrated from Sept. 15th - Oct. 15th but the ladies still wanted to talk about it and shine light on the month. Kim brings up the fact that it isn't talked about enough in schools. Since she believes that it's important to learn about other cultures she gives examples on how she celebrates the community. She also talks about how she teaches her daughter as much as she can. There's always the fear of being a " Culture Vulture" but you have to listen to find out how she avoids that! Jay also takes a dig at non-authentic tacos. Where did this idea that ground beef goes in tacos come from? Who knows but Jay doesn't like it! Since Jay is the Latina of the Soul Sisters she also talks about what she identify as. Is Latino or Hispanic the right term? Tune in as they look into that too! The Latinx community contributes so much to the world and the Soul Sisters want others to know that. Hopefully this episode is an eye opener for someone out there. The ladies decided to try out an app over the summer in hopes of making some friendly connections. BumbleBff was an interesting experience and they are ready to talk about. Jay is the one that introduced the idea to Kim. Kim was a little reluctant at first but her feelings changed after making a couple of matches. Tune in to find out how things worked out for them and where they stand now. The Soul Sisters are always open to making friends with likeminded people. Is self-esteem the new buzzword of the week? Do we all have great self-esteem, or are we perpetuated with the never-ending battle of finding our worth? On today's think piece, Kim & Jay talk self-esteem. Kim believes self-esteem starts with self; while Jay believes it starts with community. As always, these soul sisters hunker down and explore the complexity of self-esteem and its intersectionality. The ladies share anecdotes where colorism is featured while centering the article, “The Impact of Colorism on Self Esteem for Dark Skinned Girls, Women, and Femmes” by Sarah L. Webb. They're back like they never left!! Kim and Jay enjoyed their summer break but now it's back to business. These two couldn't wait to get back on the mic and share some new things with their listeners. The Sophomore Season will have a few changes. The ladies are trying out "minicasts" and changing their posting schedule. Do you know what a minicast is? Tune in and they will tell you! It wouldn't be Kim and Jay if they didn't have a difference of opinions about something. Kim talks about why she doesn't want to use the word "goals" and Jay offers a couple of other words to use in it's place. Will they come to an agreement on what word fits best? Probably not but it's fun to hear their thoughts. The linktree has also been updated with a submission form. As promised, here is part 2 of the Season Rewind! The ladies continue to walk down memory lane and talk about the fun times of Season 1. Jay talks about how she had some help from a certain little person in her life. Unfortunately, Kim doesn't have that luck. It's interesting to hear how they got their kids involved with the creative process of podcasting. They even talk about letting their daughters listen to certain episodes as a way of challenging their way of thinking and starting conversations. It's all about creating paths and that's exactly what they're doing! Soul Sisters give a quick update on their therapy experience while revisiting the therapy episode. Jay is taking a little bit of a break but that doesn't change her stance on the topic. She is still a believer in therapy and want people to make their mental health a priority. Kim is still in therapy and now, her daughter is seeing a therapist. It's good to see the progression the ladies have made and will continue to make while caring for themselves. With the season coming to an end, it's all about accomplishments! The ladies don't shy away about how proud they are of themselves for doing this. Kim is learning to celebrate milestones so celebrating her experience with podcasting isn't going to be any different. Jay also points out the fact that the podcast has helped grow their friendship while creating memories. It seems like this podcast holds more sentimental value than they think. Bring out your good wigs and your party hats! It's a celebration! Soul Sisters Sunday Podcast has officially completed their first season Kim and Jay couldn't be more excited. They have mentioned it a couple of times, but it is finally here. It's time for a season rewind. Jay enjoys the fact that her and Kim can have meaningful conversations while expressing their different opinions. The ladies look back at the times when their opinions were different, but they were able to carry on a gentle conversation. Not being a “yes man” and being able to agree to disagree is something they hold to a high regard, on and off the podcast. The color purple comes up in this discussion too. Not the movie, but the actual color. Kim shares a time when it was her turn to make an Instagram post and she used the wrong shade. If you've been listening to us, then you know Jay is more of the detail-oriented one. She wasted no time to call Kim out about it and get it fixed. Thanks to this incident, Kim is more careful in her color selections Soul Sisters also took some time to give an update on therapy, their favorite episodes, what they want to add to previous episodes, but you can catch all that in Part II. A bittersweet moment. The final episode "Dear Podcaster, Can Your Hear Us?" for the season. The Soul Sisters have truly enjoyed this segment. It's almost hard to believe they were able to do a part 6. The podcasts that they listened into are: Mamalyfe Podcast - @mamalyfeplus3 Crime and Roses Podcast - @crimeandroses 10 Ish Podcast - @10ishpod Kim went on a whole rant while explaining The Bachelor franchise to Jay. If you watched the most recent season, then you understand that Clayton was trash and Kim was eager to let Jay know of that too. The ladies give their own opinions on competitive dating shows and why they wouldn't be interested in participating. One of the podcast also bought up the topic of Roe v. Wade. It's no secret that these ladies are all for women's rights and protection of women, so they had quite a bit to say about that. Jay goes on to talk to about the podcast she listened to and a few things she learned that were interesting. As always, she picks at Kim's brain and shares the knowledge with her too. Turn your volume up and tune in! If you have any podcasts that you would like for the Soul Sisters to check out for their next season please let them know. School is almost out, and the ladies can't wait! Well, not literal school. Season 1, our freshman season, is almost complete but with all the work they have put in, it felt like school. Kim and Jay take some time on this fine Sunday to talk about school and the education system. Both have been in many different school settings, so they are ready to talk about their experiences. Jay is very open about her educational path not being the easiest. She talks about the negative side when it comes to socializing with peers and the hunger she had to further her education. It was rough at times, but she was able to find the silver lining and understand how it helped her grow as a person. She also makes the statement that school doesn't prepare us for the real word and Kim is in complete agreeance. Education is more than just school. People tend to forget that, but these ladies are here to remind everyone. They look at the different layers to the idea that "education is important." The Soul Sisters agree that having an education is important but there are so many other ways to advance in life. Kim goes on to mention that even though she is proud of her degree, a trade would've been a better option. Shout out to the individuals that decided to go to trade school! Unschooling or homeschooling? The ladies also talk about the different alternatives that are available. Jay talks about considering homeschooling for her daughter while Kim is a little hesitant. Jay is more concerned about the experience while Kim is thinking about the social aspect of it. As always, they are able to have an interesting conversation about their differences. Somehow, they get into a small side conversation about friendships and how some people want to avoid certain genders in a work setting. You must listen to see what that's about! Hope y'all enjoy! Move over Picasso! We have paint brushes too! In this week's episode, the ladies decide to explore another skill. They have cooked a couple of meals, pulled out their sewing machines to make a couple of pieces, but now it is time to paint. Kim makes it very clear that she is not a professional artist but with this activity it allowed her to express her creative side in a peaceful way. Jay believes everyone is an artist. To her, it's all about having fun and finding a different avenue for self-expression. She also mentions how painting can be a confidence booster for some people. Jay is very proud of the past and present work she has created and looking forward to making more. The ladies also talk about how they learned about art in school. Kim's mother still has the Christmas tree she made in 4th grade and Jay still has a drawing from high school. Also, Jay talks a little bit about how baking is art and share a funny story about the vegan cupcakes she made for Kim. It's good to see that after all these years, they still have beautiful memories and the pieces to go along with it. They can't go on in the episode without talking about what they painted! Kim kept it very simple with her painting and recreated a character from an anime she recently watched. Her daughter even joined in with her own canvas and it turned into a bonding moment. Jay is a bit fancier so she made a self-portrait with an extra detail to give it more meaning. Listen in to find out what lovely creations the Soul Sisters made! Dinosaurs aren't real? Neither is the internet? We're all dead? What is happening here!?! Kim and Jay couldn't help it. They are ready to party in their tin foil hats and talk about conspiracies. It's a subject that is forever changing and they are ready to investigate a few of them. It's no secret that Kim has become a firm believer that dinosaurs didn't exist. Have you ever seen the excitement and conviction a flat-earther has when it's bought up? Well Kim is no different about dinosaurs. Jay points out that with the way technology is today, there shouldn't be much question about dinosaurs existing or what they looked like. After an interesting back and forth, the ladies came to an agreement about the prehistoric creatures. Give it a listen to find out what it is! Jay brings up this idea that we are all dead and we're living in a dream-like state. She also plays a video to back it up. It almost makes them think about one of many reasons for the Mandela Effect. Just like many other conspiracy theories, it's not impossible but definitely questionable. The ladies discuss the claims of the world ending that fueled this belief as well as the "dream-like" state not being possible. It leads perfectly into how the internet is dead and most of what we see are bots mimicking humans. Are you real? Are we real? Is that perfect Instagram model some type of A.I? These are some interesting things to think about! They also dig into the Egg theory and a couple of other theories that will make you think, "Can that really happen?" The ladies can agree that this was definitely a party for them and can't wait to wear their tin hats again to the next one. If you have anything to add to the theories they talked about or want to share some that they didn't mention, please do so! Have y'all seen our glasses?! Oh, we are wearing them! Lol. Listeners, it is no surprise that with our first season, our freshman season of our podcast, coming to a closing we needed to do our version of a final project: Ode to The Four Agreements. It's, also, no secret that Kim and Jay LOVE “The Four Agreements.” If we had a quarter for every time it was mentioned on the 26 other episodes, we would have enough money to buy some Vitner's chips and pop [including inflation rate]. Thankfully, snacks came with the reading of this book in preparation for this week's episode. * * *The ladies put their mama geese glasses and thinking caps on and start depicting one of their favorite books! * Jay struggles to find impeccability of the word when Don Miguel Ruiz guides us to not take things personally; while Kim tries to understand how her best fluctuates throughout the day. The Soul Sisters take us on a sophisticated version of Spark Notes when paying homage to a 140-page book that would be considered a shorter book; but in their eyes; Small but Mighty. The ladies go on an auditory book review through the wonders of Don Miguel Ruiz. And while they enjoy talking about it, they do urge the listeners to read the book, or listen to it! Slide into their DM's and Jay may be able to send it to you for free! Or go to your local bookstore or library-get you a copy! & Tune in to listen to how Kim and Jay breathe life into a 1952 book that has helped them reach new levels of personal growth and freedom! The ladies believe that Don Miguel Ruiz would give this project a passing grade. Let them know what you think about their first book review! * * As Always, Thank you for listening * * * Don't forget to follow us on social media @soulsisterssundaypodcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soul-sisters-sunday/support
It's that time again! More podcasters coming your way! Kim and Jay are coming in hot with part 5 of " Dear Podcaster, Can Your Hear Us?" The podcasts that they tuned into are: No Guru Ish - @no_guru_ish Self Care After Dark - @selfcareafterdark Raw Happiness Podcast - @rawhappinesspodcast Kim shares a fun story about how she found her podcast for this week. It feels like it was meant for her to listen to the episodes and she's ready! Also, Jay talks about a different style of podcasting that her choice uses on their platform. It's something so quick and simple but it still opens the door for intriguing conversation. As always, the ladies talk about the podcast that they listened to together. This one looks at a certain topic from a male's perspective that you don't want to miss. Listen for yourself and let them know what you think. Enough of the "Yo Momma" jokes. It's time to really talk about the different perspectives of motherhood! In honor of Mother's Day, the ladies come together to discuss Mother's Day and what that means to them. The emotional relationship between mother and daughter has many ups and downs. In true Soul Sisters fashion, they are here to examine that and lay it out on the table! No two mothers are the same. Since Kim and Jay know that, they talk about how their mothers were different and how it shaped the way they view Mother's Day. In Jay's words, Kim is on the "privileged side" since she has a less complicated relationship with her mother. Jay is open about taking the steps to heal from that and is very sure that many listeners can relate. She also shares a little bit about how a special woman in her life stepped in and has never left her side. You can almost hear how Jay lights up when she talks about the mother figure in her life. As always, the ladies have different expectations when it comes to these type of things. Even though Jay feels that the day is no different than any other Sunday, she talks about how she would enjoy spending Mother's Day at home while being catered to. Of course, Kim isn't too fond of that. She would rather be taken out. Regardless of which way they want to spend the day, it's all about being honored and making memories with their loved ones. All in all, Happy Mother's Day to anyone who is a mother or mother figure to someone. This could be aunties who stepped in when times were rough, cousins that are always there for support, sisters that are always there as an ear to listen and women who have lost their children but are lucky enough to give that love and affection to others. Just because someone gave birth it doesn't make them a mother. It's all about the love and care that they provide. Get your needle and thread ready!! Kim and Jay are coming to you with a new segment: " What's Sewing Good Looking?" In this week's episode, the duo discussed a very important life skill which is sewing. The ladies may have a difference of opinions on many things but they can agree that everyone, no matter the gender, need to know the basics of sewing. You don't want to get caught up in a zombie apocalypse without knowing how to sew for protection!! The ladies also made their own projects with this episode in mind. Kim isn't as advanced so she kept it simple while Jay put in a little bit more effort. They also talk about the sewing machines they used to complete their pieces of work. If you want to find out what they made you have to give the episode a listen! In many episodes the ladies always talk about moving in love. That same energy is needed when doing small things too and sewing isn't any different. Continue to sew with love and express your creative side. Happy 4/20 to all the Devil's Lettuce lovers out there!! In honor of the fun and controversial holiday, Kim and Jay come together to talk about the Devil's Lettuce. Have you ever wondered where the flower comes from? Well, Kim talks about the possible source being aliens. She begins to explain the DNA makeup on the plant and why she kind of believes it. Is Jay on board with this idea? Is it possible that an extraterrestrial planted a couple of seeds while building the pyramids? They also talk about the many uses of the plant. If you're a person that struggles with their mental health, chronic pain, certain illnesses or need help just relaxing the ladies believe this would be a great alternative to look into. Jay also shares the medicinal purposes the plant has to offer that she learned from a Netflix documentary. Do you want to know the name of the documentary and what was said? More of a reason to listen! With them being Devil's Lettuce positive moms, they talk about their experience in parenting and how they talk to their kids about it. Jay is a little bit more open about her usage while Kim tries to keep it more of a secret. Jay calls her a HYPOCRITE but Kim is ready to explain herself! Wanna go on an adventure?! As many of us may know, the school system is a set up for many children to fail. Many children of color or low income kids go to jail shortly after starting school. Why is that? Well, Kim and Jay are here to pick it apart and give their input! The ladies are very familiar with the public school system. As little girls and young adults, they didn't notice the similarities between the two. However, now that they are grown and know better they are ready to talk about it. The experience of going through metal detectors, suspensions, lack of mental health resources and the horrible school lunches are apart of a plan that many fall victim to. Kim opens up about having to co-parent with an inmate and the ways of communication (or lack thereof) and Jay voices her opinion on the treatment of inmates after being released. They are people who made mistakes just like any one else. Should they have a 2nd chance at life to get on a better path? Well, you gotta listen to find out! They also discuss the way jails and prisons are portrayed in televisions and movies. That show "Beyond Scared Straight", Kim hates it! It seems like Jay agrees with her too as the show doesn't serve any real purpose. At least, in their opinion. Tune in and tell a friend! The ladies could've talked about this for hours.
