It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! These eight chilling tales, set during the events of crises past, serve to warn you, dear reader: when in crisis, watch your back. In the fractured world of Flashpoint, Professor Pyg is stalking Gotham City's nightclubs, sniffing out victims! During Blackest Night, Scarecrow lurks outside a movie theater, recruiting new test subjects to perfect his fear toxin! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! All these, plus new stories from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Millennium, Zero Hour, The Final Night, and Final Crisis are collected in DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis, a deadly new horror anthology coming to haunt you this fall! Over The Edge is a great title for this episode of The New Batman Adventures as it starts off with the death of Batgirl.
With the Scarcrow golem defeated, Argos, Balrax, Victorio, and Lance begin to climb the tower to answer the truest of questions, which box did she check "Hot or Not".Also a discussion on hard mountain dew.
We ease on down the road this week and watched the Wiz (1978) with our friend Christian Turner. How exactly did heavy hitting director Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon) manage to direct this Wizard of Oz reimagining with an all-black cast, based on the Tony winning musical, is beyond us but we're all here for it. We're also here to remind you of the banger songs on this soundtrack. Released to a mixed reception, it has since found a cult following with audiences thanks to its television showings through the decades since its release. We finally get to talk about the Supreme diva herself Diana Ross on the podcast, who stars as a Harlem school teacher who finds herself transported to a Land of Oz by the way of a dystopian New York City, where she befriends a Scarecrow made of trash (Michael Jackson), a Coney Island Tin Man (Nipsey Russell), and a disco cowardly lion (Ted Ross). At the time the most expensive movie musical ever made, we discuss the insanely talented cast. We talk how this movie revists into adulthood, and that it's screenplay was adapted by MTMUG patron saint himself Joel Schumacher, who helped make this musical into the coke fueled fever dream we know and love. Topics discussed are the Facts of Life episode where Tootie nearly misses her high school graduation to auditon for Dorothy, the weird self-help seminar tone of Schumacher's script, and how JJ from Good Times was almost the Scarcrow. What is Palaeontology (or Paleontology for you Americans)? How do we find fossils today and what do they help with? Did giant insects exist on earth, and if so, how? All of these questions and many more are answered in this week’s episode of Genuine Chit-Chat! Mike speaks with his Palaeontologist friend Wayne, where they also discuss dinosaurs, mass extinction events, some of the work Wayne has done at university (including going to sites discovering dinosaur remains with some flesh still attached) about evolutionary life in general and much more, so it’s one not to miss! Wayne is also an accomplished author and has released two fiction books, which delve into events surrounding 19th century London; A Light In The Mist, which follows a young Dr Jekyll while the second novel (Scarcrow) has a different protagonist surrounding similar events from another perspective. Wayne wants to spread a message of hope, telling everyone & anyone to follow their calling, despite what others may say, as you can change the world, if you have the dedication to do so, which were the inspiration of said novels. This week, Mike speaks with Wayne Telford, a palaeontologist who has written two novels surrounding 19th century London; A Light In The Mist, which follows a young Dr Jekyll while the second novel (Scarcrow) has a different protagonist surrounding similar events from another perspective. Although they discuss Wayne’s books, the creative process and what made Wayne decide to create these fantastic works, they delve deep into individualism and the idea of good vs evil, as well as life’s purpose, morality, the wealth divide, societal issues and so much more, so if you aren’t interested in the books, this is a great chat about the human condition (and we’re sure you’ll be more intrigued by the books after the chat anyway)! Wayne wants to spread a message of hope, telling everyone & anyone to follow their calling, despite what others may say, as you can change the world, if you have the dedication to do so. Next week, Mike & Wayne chat about palaeontology, including dinosaurs, fossils, mass extinction events, giant insects that rules the earth, some of the work Wayne has done at university (including going to sites discovering dinosaur remains with some flesh still attached) and about evolutionary life in general, so it’s one not to miss!
