Lewis University professor Jamil Mustafa draws parallels between the original 1886 novel and modern stories like Twin Peaks, Fight Club, and Black Swan. Plus, I talk with Yannie ten Broeke, who teaches psychology at Touro University, about why the Jekyll and Hyde archetype reflects how little we understand our own minds. Then he took over the role of Roger De Bris. Then he graduated to the leading role of Max Bialystock. And he was in the film version too. He's also been in many other shows including The Little Mermaid, Jekyll and Hyde, Bye Bye Birdie, Sister Act and Guys and Dolls. And he's been in a whole bunch of movies and tv shows as well including The Knick, Nurse Jackie and Boardwalk Empire. And as a singer he's released two CDs and been on various Broadway cast albums. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of the most beloved works of fiction in North American entertainment history. Author Robert Louis Stevenson’s late 19th century novella is one of the most famous pieces of English literature, and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. The novella has also had a sizeable impact on American popular culture, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.
