Novum, or James as his real name is, has made a name of himself on Youtube where he makes in-depth analysis of cult horror films such as The VVitch, Alien and our focus in this episode: Ari Aster movies. I stumbled upon Novum's youtube channel on Reddit where someone made a joke about making a 7 hour long analysis of Midsommar A youtube video I immediately devoured.  This podcast is usually in Swedish. Cem Özdemir ist zum Ministerpräsidenten von Baden-Württemberg gewählt worden. Ein Länder-Chef mit Migrationsgeschichte – in Deutschland gab es das noch nie. Es ist ein Novum in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik: ein Ministerpräsident mit türkischer Migrationsgeschichte. Der Grünen-Politiker Özdemir ist im Landtag von Baden-Württemberg in dieses Amt gewählt worden. Die Autorin Düzen Tekkal war ebenfalls im Landtag. Sie spricht von einem "Gänsehaut-Moment". Denn auch wenn in Deutschland viele Menschen eine Zuwanderungsgeschichte hätten, sei ein Ministerpräsident mit türkischen Wurzeln nicht selbstverständlich. Gerade auch für Menschen mit Einwanderungsgeschichte bedeute das viel. "Wenn er es schaffen kann – mit diesem Vornamen – dann kann ich es auch schaffen. Ich glaube, das zeigt die Symbolkraft." Düzen Tekkal, Autorin Tekkal spricht von "einem Land der Chancen" – gerade in Zeiten, in denen rechtsextreme Stimmen Menschen mit Zuwanderungsgeschichte einreden wollten, dass sie nicht dazugehörten. Es gehe nicht um Herkunft oder Religion, sondern darum, wo man hinwolle. Das sei etwas, wofür Özdemir einstehe, so Tekkal. Dennoch sieht die Autorin auch das Problem der "gläsernen Decke" für Menschen mit Zuwanderungsgeschichte. Selbstverständlich spielten Herkunft und Religion immer noch eine große Rolle, sagt Tekkal. Genau deshalb könne die Ernennung von Özdemir einen Unterschied machen. Aber natürlich gab und gibt es auch Kritik an Özdemir. So wurden zum Beispiel im Wahlkampf Stimmen laut, dass er sich zu sehr von Migrantinnen und Migranten abgrenze oder mit Stereotypen arbeite. In this episode of High Theory, Zac Zimmer talks to Kim about Decolonizing the Novum. The novum is a concept developed by Darko Suvin that names the new element of a science fiction or speculative fiction narrative. SF narratives from the Americas that rewrite archival material about colonization and first contact have begun an imaginative project of decolonizing that novum. In Zac's words, the "novum" has been part of our definition of science fiction since Darko Suvin first offered up the concept of part of his critical assessment of SF. This idea of "novelty" is linked to conquest and colonialism through the figure of the New World, i.e. the post-1492 Americas. Thus untangling the relationship between colonialism, novelty, and science fiction must pass through the historical record of the conquest. One way to do this is to focus on SF that deeply engages the archival record of the XVIth century in the Americas: texts and artworks that use speculation to depart from the knowledge that things didn't quite occur the way the dominant paradigms would lead us to believe, and to imagine other futures linked to past moments of historical contingency. In the episode, Zac references an incredible list of writers and theorists, including Edmundo O'Gorman and Walter Benjamin, Saidiya Hartman's “Venus in Two Acts,” You Dreamed of Empires by Álvaro Enrigue, Destrucción de todas las cosas by Hugo Hiriart, and “Decolonization is not a metaphor” by Eve Tuck and K. The novum is a concept developed by Darko Suvin that names the new element of a science fiction or speculative fiction narrative. SF narratives from the Americas that rewrite archival material about colonization and first contact have begun an imaginative project of decolonizing that novum. Thomas Gabriel – der Name dürfte vielen kein Begriff sein. Und doch zählt der gebürtige Nidwaldner zu den prägenden Persönlichkeiten der Schweizer Musikszene. Der studierte Pianist, Posaunist und Blasmusikdirigent besitzt heute das grösste Tonstudio der Schweiz und ist unter anderem verantwortlich für die Aufnahmen am Eidgenössischen Musikfest 2026 in Biel. Dabei begann alles an einem ganz anderen Ort: an der Fasnacht. Als Probeleiter der Guggenmusik «Seegusler Buochs» schrieb Gabriel frühe mehrstimmige Arrangements – ein Novum in der Schweizer Guggenlandschaft. Rückblickend sagt er: «Ich habe der Guggenmusik viel zu verdanken.» Denn sie ebnete ihm nicht nur den Weg als Arrangeur und Komponist, sondern auch jenen als Tonmeister. Als im Kinderzimmer irgendwann kein Platz mehr war für Mischpulte, Recorder und Kabel, wich Gabriel kurzerhand in einen ehemaligen Schweinestall aus, der zum ersten eigenen Tonstudio wurde. Guggenmusik, Klassik, Blasmusik, Volksmusik – musikalisch lässt sich Thomas Gabriel bis heute in keine Schublade stecken. Seit vielen Jahren dirigiert er die «Swiss Powerbrass», wohl die bekannteste Guggenmusik der Schweiz, ebenso wie den «Jodlerklub Wiesenberg». Wie es zu dieser stilistischen Vielfalt kam, weshalb ihn die Guggenmusik bis heute nicht loslässt und warum ausgerechnet er – der schon früh Klavierunterricht hatte – später zur Posaune wechselte: Darüber spricht er im SRF Musikwelle Brunch.
