Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics titles for the week of September 3, 2025. We get a new era of Batman from Matt Fraction and it was tremendously enjoyable. Also the ending of Ressurrection Man: Quantum Karma was very satisfying. Absoulte Superman continues to be the best of the Absolute titles while Poison Ivy reaches it's third anniversary. Tons of action in Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong as you might expect and the heist story in Cheetah and Cheshire shifts into the recruiment phase. It's a great week of DC titles so join us for the details on these books, plus all the other releases dropping from DC this week.

Poison Ivy Follow Up by Maine's Coast 93.1
As regular listeners will know, I spent seven years living in the greater Puget Sound area and despite having lived in eight different states, it's one of two places that will always be home to me. There's something about small Washington State towns that can feel delightfully out of time and there's no greater contrast to them than the technology centric hub that is Seattle crowned by its futuristic Space Needle. It elicits a range of complex emotions as a former local that the visitor will never understand primary among them is a clash between modern advancement and the struggle of smaller coastal communities to hold onto their ways of life and cultural identities. This was my personal filter going into reading The Stoneshore Register, a delightful new graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and I have the perfect person to hang out to tell us all about it, first time guest G. Willow Wilson. Yes, I do go off on a bit of a tangent about gardening but we'll call that a Poison Ivy interlude, and we wrap things up covering what we can expect to see in Marvel's new ongoing Black Cat series.

In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com

Master Gardener Emily Clem talks with ACES Extension Agent, Brian Brown, about beneficial and non-beneficial weeds. He stresses that many weeds, often seen as nuisances, are actually beneficial. Clover, for example, adds vital nitrogen to the soil and attracts pollinators. In controlling invasive weeds, Brown recommends planting resistant varieties and modifying environmental conditions before resorting to chemical control. He suggests using pre-emergent herbicides for winter weeds and creating physical barriers for invasive species like bamboo. Kudzu, Bradford Pear trees, and Mimosa trees are some of the more invasive species, but the number one weed in our area is Chinese privet, and Brown offers several methods to remove it.Links:https://www.aces.edu/ (Alabama Cooperative Extension)https://mastergardeners-limestonecountyalabama.org/https://www.alcpl.org/Have questions about this episode? From batnips to ice-themed villains and the not-so-subtle campiness, Joel Schumacher's neon-soaked superhero spectacle dives deep into the wacky world of Gotham City's dynamic duo as they face off against Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. Batman & Robin stands as one of cinema's most notorious cautionary tales about franchise excess. What began as Warner Bros' attempt to create the ultimate summer blockbuster became a $125 million lesson in how beloved characters can be transformed into walking toy advertisements. From George Clooney's regretful reflections on his rubber nipples to Arnold Schwarzenegger's $25 million payday for delivering ice puns, this production reads like a masterclass in studio interference gone wrong.Schumacher's vision clashed with studio demands for maximum merchandising, costume designers prioritized sculpted anatomy over actor comfort, and how plot came a distinct second to ensuring characters and vehicles were as toyetic as possible. While Batman & Robin effectively killed the franchise for nearly a decade, its spectacular failure directly influenced Christopher Nolan's grounded Dark Knight trilogy and fundamentally changed how studios approach superhero properties. What an incredible legacy for one movie to have! I would love to hear your thoughts on Batman & Robin !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2016 conversation with Mike Stoller. ABOUT MIKE STOLLERMike Stoller has written more than 60 songs that have appeared on the Billboard charts, including the #1 hits “Hound Dog,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” “Searchin',” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “Don't,” and “Ruby, Baby." After Stoller and songwriting partner Jerry Leiber found early R&B success with recordings by Little Esther, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley turned their song "Hound Dog" into a #1 single on the pop, R&B, and country charts in 1956. Elvis went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller titles, including the hits "Love Me," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "She's Not You," and "Bossa Nova Baby." Mike and Jerry signed an independent production deal with Atlantic Records in the mid-1950s, where they wrote and produced a series of hits for several artists, including the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway." Additionally, the pair wrote and produced all the Coasters' singles, including "Young Blood," "Searchin'," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," and "Poison Ivy." Other highlights from the Leiber and Stoller songbook include "Love Potion No. 9," which was a hit for both the Clovers and the Searchers, and "Is That All There Is," which was a hit for Peggy Lee. Eleven different versions of their song “Stand By Me” appeared on the Billboard charts over the span of 50 years, with the original version by Ben E. King hitting the Top 10 in both 1961 and 1986. Smokey Joe's Cafe, which included 40 Leiber and Stoller songs, opened in 1995 and became the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. Stoller received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award in 1991, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Send us a textVeteran journalist Pam LeBlanc takes us behind the scenes of her remarkable journey from newspaper columnist to freelance adventure writer in this captivating conversation about authentic outdoor storytelling and responsible tourism. After 32 years in newspapers, Pam made the leap to freelance writing in 2018, focusing exclusively on the muddy, mosquito-bitten adventures that fuel her passion for nature."I only want to write about stuff that I have personally experienced myself and I can write about with authority," Pam explains, setting herself apart from writers who compile stories from behind desks. This philosophy has taken her scuba diving with 200 hammerhead sharks in the Galapagos, rappelling down 38-story buildings, dog sledding above the Arctic Circle in Sweden and hiking through the normally inaccessible Santa Elena Canyon during drought conditions. While Pam's byline appears in prestigious publications like Condé Nast Traveler and Texas Monthly, she remains particularly proud of her work highlighting the natural wonders of Texas. She shares thoughtful perspectives on responsible tourism, encouraging travelers to respect local cultures, seek out less-crowded alternatives to Instagram-famous destinations, use public transportation when possible and always be mindful of environmental impact.Perhaps most inspirational is Pam's advice for "injecting adventure into everyday life." Her number one tip? "Get your hair wet." This simple phrase encapsulates her philosophy that too many people, especially women, watch adventures from the sidelines rather than fully participating. At 61, she leads by example through her active lifestyle and upcoming trips to France, Colorado and Antarctica, proving age is no barrier to adventure.Discover more about Pam's adventures and follow her journey at PamLeBlancAdventures.com or AustinTravels.com. Whether you're planning your next outdoor expedition or simply seeking inspiration to step outside your comfort zone, Pam's stories will ignite your sense of adventure and appreciation for the natural world. Please take a moment to rate, review and subscribe to the Media in Minutes podcast here or anywhere you get your podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/media-in-minutes/id1555710662

While comic books have traditionally been defined by heroes that reflect the extremes of masculinity and femininity, and aimed at a primary straight-male audience, a notable shift has happened over the past 20 or so years. Where queer characters were once merely hinted at, or when included portrayed as grotesque stereotypes, since at least the 2000s comics have become increasingly more inclusive. Now it's common for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, asexual and other gender nonconforming characters to be featured in even the biggest comic-book franchises, and to even helm their own solo books. So join us for our 2025 Pride Month Special as the Great Pop Culture Debate attempts to name the Best LGBTQIA+ Super Hero. Characters discussed: Batwoman, Black Cat, Midnighter, Wiccan, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Miss America (America Chavez), Northstar, John Constantine, Apollo, Deadpool, Mystique, Iceman, Dreamer, Superman (Jon Kent). Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Bob Erlenback and Brendan Hay, and special guest Steve Orlando, prolific comic-book writer for Marvel, DC Comics, and other publishers, as they discuss 16 of the most-popular out super-heroes in comics. Laura Zavelson, GenX, is a corporate finance escapee, turned serial entrepreneur, former professor of entrepreneurship, and fairy godmother for new business ideas. She helps GenXers who are laid-off, pissed-off, pushed-out or burned-out capitalize on their expertise and experience to build a business as a coach, consultant or independent expert. She draws on 25+ years of experience to deliver client getting and business building strategies that are both proven and practical. Her videos, articles, and programs are designed to be easy-to-follow roadmaps to financial stability, flexibility and freedom so her clients NEVER, EVER have to be out there looking for a job again. Here are the topics we covered:0:00 Introduction3:22 Escape Plan4:25 Focus Area7:11 Problem Statements8:35 Poison Ivy15:44 Research17:48 Success SquadMemorable Quotes“Most people start marketing too early. They find an idea and fall in love with it…the problem is you can't start a business with just a good idea. The best practice is to find a problem and fall in love with that rather than the idea.”“The best way for someone to buy from you is to solve a problem they already have and preferably to solve a problem that matters to them.”“If you're at grand zero and have a lot of problems your business could solve, pick the itchiest one to solve. A lot of business owners solve problems that people can let wait.”“Reaching people through social media is difficult because it's so fragmented.”Here are the 3 Takeaways:One of the best pivots you can make mid-career is to become a coach or consultant. The GenX Escape Plan is a 3-step roadmap that gives you a process so you can start exploring that option. The process will work for anyone. It's about validating your ideas before you go out and start a new business. The first thing to do is to find your focus area which is a person plus a problem because people buy things to solve problems. Just announcing a service or product may not be compelling enough for someone to buy. It's likely when you go to find your target audience that they have a lot of problems. You want to pick the problem for your business to address that they think of all the time and they can't wait to get rid of. If you put a solution in front of them for the “itchiest” problem, they will want to get rid of it – it's like poison ivy! That can be the fastest path to revenue. China is planning a new version of its Made In China 2025 industrial strategy. Just as America is punching holes in its own science funding budget, we'll be reporting from the output gap. Meanwhile, the new US ambassador to Ankara has declared that he's against carving up Syria in a modern Sykes-Picot, the treaty that drew up the Middle East modern borders. Is this an important anti-colonial action or just a license for Erdogan to gobble up his own Ottoman empire? Finally, Harvard continues to come under shelling by the US government. Not content with disbarring international students, Trump said on Monday that he is considering taking $3 billion of previously awarded grant money and giving it to trade schools. Is this a case of frightening them to with an inch of their lives or is Trump genuinely guillotining the credentialed aristocracy that runs the United States?
