Editors - Julie Cohen ACE and David Rogers ACE The Paper editors Julie Cohen and David Rogers first began collaborating on another Greg Daniels series, Space Force.  Although that series was not in the same "mock doc" format as The Paper, David's first show with Daniels was. And that series was The Office, where he served as both editor and director.  Both Julie and David felt at home with The Paper's faux documentary format however, with David having worked on The Office and Julie receiving multiple Emmy nominations for her work on the unscripted series, Project Runway. The Paper follows up on the story from The Office, as the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch discovers a disappearing Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. This mockumentary follows the daily lives and struggles of dreamers in love with journalism, and their less-than-competent co-workers, trying to deliver accurate news without the resources or training to do a great job. JULIE COHEN ACE Julie Cohen "loves to edit!" and considers herself lucky to have done it a lot over the last twenty years. She's edited across genres: documentary, reality, comedy, drama, sometimes all at once. Highlights include Project Runway, On Becoming a God in Central Florida, and Space Force. Most recently, she edited a bunch of episodes of Hulu's Tell Me Lies, starting with the pilot and including both season finales. DAVID ROGERS ACE David Rogers wanted to be a director since seeing Superman The Movie at the age of 8, and shot videos and films throughout high school and college. Following that he would move to L.A. and work as an Assistant Editor and then Editor on such shows as Seinfeld, NewsRadio, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Entourage, The Comeback, and The Office. David started directing on The Office and directed shows like Parks and Recreation and The Mindy Project, where he also served as Co-Executive Producer. David is also the owner of a huge Superman collection and a Knight Rider replica which he's currently in the process of modifying. By 1968 the campaign for civil rights in Northern Ireland had moved onto the streets. It was a deliberate decision, inspired in part by global events, particularly the civil rights movement in America. In order to help us understand better the street politics element of the civil rights movement I have enlisted the help and expertise of Dr Melissa Baird. Melissa is an historian of modern Irish and American history, she currently Assistant Editor of the Documents on Irish Foreign Policy with the Royal Irish Academy. Melissa received her PhD in 2023 from Queen's University Belfast, which examined the relationship between the Irish diaspora in the United States and the Northern Irish civil rights movement.I began by asking Melissa to give us an insight into the thinking behind the decision to take the politics of civil rights to the streets…This episode was produced as part of At the Crossroads: The Campaign for Civil Rights in Northern Ireland, a project developed by The Linen Hall. In episode 295 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Andrew Shields. Andrew Shields is a journalist, communications and events management professional and published author who has worked in the world of sports media for over 40 years. Andrew graduated from the University of Warwick with a BA in American and English Literature and began climbing the ladder in sports journalism in the mid-1980s. He got his first break as Editorial Assistant on Scouting Magazine, the official magazine of the Scouts before becoming Assistant Editor at George Wimpey in the construction and housebuilding industry. He then landed the role of Editor for Sport England's magazine, where he spent five years between 1985-1990. He got his ‘big break' and landed a job at the now iconic Time Out Magazine in January 1990 as their Sport and Fitness Editor, where he spent 19 years. After Time Out, he had the opportunity of a lifetime when he joined the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) in December 2008. Despite being a part of one of the country's biggest and, some would argue best moments in our entire history, Andrew faced a huge amount of stress and mental health difficulties in this role. When he joined LOCOG, the organisation was around 300 people. By 2012 it had grown to a staggering 9,000. Andrew's job was naturally incredibly intense, and throughout that period, the job ate into his family life and work-life balance, to the point he was regularly working at weekends, which included being in the office. At its peak, Andrew was managing a team of over 40 people and, in his words, it felt like ‘running a marathon, then running another one immediately afterwards perpetually until the Games finished'. Andrew is also the author of seven published books, including ‘Master of the art of running', ‘Master the art of working out' and ‘365 ways to get fit'. In recent years, he is now an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has taken up a voluntary role as the Director of Communications for the Institute of Events Management. In Part 1 of this episode we discuss his over 40-year career in journalism, public relations and writing. We focus on his role in LOCOG and the rollercoaster 5-year period he worked there, including the reality of that level of media scrutiny and workplace stress which manifested in physical symptoms as well as on his mental health. We then discuss his decision to go freelance and working for a sports agency, which included work on other major tournament sporting bids. Their work on SIRENS was not just professionally unifying but creatively fulfilling as well. My guest for this episode is Nick Literski.   Nick is a Jungian scholar, spiritual guide, author, and retired attorney.  Dissatisfaction with a career working in law, together with the experience of coming out as part of the LGBTQ+ community, led them to rebuild their life and pursue their interest in the intersection of spirituality and psychology. After three years of training as a shamanic practitioner, Nick's desire to help facilitate the spiritual journey of queer persons led them to earn a master's degree in Spiritual Guidance at Sofia University, where their thesis work focused on how gay men from non-affirming religious backgrounds create their own sustaining, affirming spiritual practices. This work, in turn, inspired Nick to pursue further graduate work in depth psychology and attain a PhD in that subject. Their dissertation work involved a depth psychological analysis of Palaeolithic cave art, through Carl Jung's technique of active imagination, with an eye toward what these images can reveal about the human religious instinct.   Nick is an accomplished author, having essays and articles published in multiple academic journals. They also co-authored Method Infinite: Freemasonry and the Mormon Restoration, published in August 2022 by Greg Kofford Books. In addition, Nick served briefly as Assistant Editor of the journal, Anthropology of Consciousness.   I begin the interview by talking with Nick about the life events that led up to their decision to change career and pursue their passions for psychology and spiritual development.  From there we discuss some of the methods they use to help their clients and this leads into an interesting conversation about how best to understand extraordinary experiences and the importance of personal meaning and subjective reality in trying to do that.
