Surprise, friends. Grant Morrison joins the show for Superman Day! As the writer behind the seminal All-Star Superman, which observes its 20th anniversary this November, we cannot think of a better person to help us celebrate the Last Son of Krypton on his 87th birthday. Action Comics #1, featuring the first appearance of Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, hit newsstands on April 18th, 1938. It is the source of everything you love about superhero comics. When Action Comics first arrived, America was in economic ruin. The world was about to enter its second great war. Despair was easily accessible, but two Jewish kids from Cleveland imagined a Man of Steel who could do the impossible and would act for those who could not act for themselves. As we look outside our windows in 2025, we see an incredible darkness, but we strive for a future beyond it. We can imitate the devils in the dark, or we can seek Superman, who reflects the best version of ourselves. Like most people, probably, we first encountered Superman through television and film; it was the All-Star Superman comics by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant, Phil Balsman, and Travis Lanham that solidified our passion for the character. Those twelve issues showcased the joyous, awful, absurd, and adventurous universe Superman populated, making us fall in love with it and our own realm in return. As Morrison writes in Supergods, we are the stories we tell ourselves. In Superman, we see who we've been, who we are, and who we could be. We're positively chuffed to chat Superman with Grant Morrison. We discuss their approach to the character in All-Star Superman and how it differs from the version they wrote in JLA, Action Comics, Final Crisis, and other stories. We discuss the significance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and what it means for Grant and others to extend their great idea. We talk about Lois and Clark, Lex Luthor, Samson, and Atlas, and Grant Morrison reveals their next big comic project somewhere along the line. Continue our conversation with Grant Morrison by visiting their Website, Substack, Instagram, and Bluesky. This Week's Sponsor: We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! These eight chilling tales, set during the events of crises past, serve to warn you, dear reader: when in crisis, watch your back. In the fractured world of Flashpoint, Professor Pyg is stalking Gotham City's nightclubs, sniffing out victims! During Blackest Night, Scarecrow lurks outside a movie theater, recruiting new test subjects to perfect his fear toxin! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! All these, plus new stories from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Millennium, Zero Hour, The Final Night, and Final Crisis are collected in DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis, a deadly new horror anthology coming to haunt you this fall! Is Capitalism Broken? Hedge Fund Veteran Explains the Money Game Is the financial system rigged? Are markets truly efficient, or are we all just players in a game controlled by forces beyond our reach? In this episode of REady2Scale, host Jeannette Friedrich sits down with hedge fund veteran and Money Game executive producer Chris Galizio to break down how the Federal Reserve, passive investing, and government intervention have reshaped capitalism, possibly for the worse. Drawing from his experience managing billions at Fidelity and running his own hedge fund, Chris explains why the financial markets no longer make sense and what investors can do to protect themselves. Key Takeaways: - The Market is a Game – How central banks, passive investing, and quantitative strategies have turned financial markets into a system that no longer reflects true value. - The Broken Ecosystem – Why companies that lose money continue to skyrocket while profitable businesses are ignored. - The Final Crisis? – Why Chris believes we are now facing the last great financial crisis: a sovereign debt and currency crisis. - Be a Lion, Not a Gazelle – How individual investors can navigate the system by focusing on real assets like real estate, gold, and select undervalued companies. - The Real Economy vs. Financial Markets – Why the disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street is only growing, and what that means for long-term investors. - Lessons from Money Game – How the film Money Game illustrates the flaws of modern capitalism and the risks of a market driven by speculation rather than fundamentals. Chris also shares insights on what's next for the economy, the role of AI in financial markets, and the importance of thinking independently in an era of groupthink. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the forces shaping your investments and the broader economy. You're on the Crisis Hotline With Doc, a series that focuses on all the Crisis events in the DC Universe. It is not a review program but rather a reader's guide and introduction to those events that highlights the importance of them to the DC Universe. In this thirteenth installment, Doc and Angus confront a darkness greater than anything they've ever faced in the pages of a Crisis event. This also marks the suspension of the series until DC publishes more Crisis events. Once that happens we will return to review them. In this episode, Phillip and Eric are continuing their breakdown of Grant Morrison's run on Batman with the big epic DC event, Final Crisis and Superman Beyond with art by J.G. Jones, Doug Mahnke, et al. They discuss this tangential yet essential tie-in to the death of Bruce Wayne story arc, debate on the quality of the story choices Morrison makes within Final Crisis, and Eric asks Phillip if it's racist to exclude Martian Manhunter from the Justice League.

Of all of Jack Kirby's creations at DC, the Fourth World is probably the most well known, the most expansive, and the most ill used by other creators over the years. Some really get the wild cosmic and Shakespearean vibe the King of Comics was putting down. Some don't and just try to make the New Gods just any other team of super heroes. And because of the high cosmic of the Fourth World, Batman usually approaches these characters from a different angle; as opposed to Superman, he rarely goes to New Genesis or teams up with Orion. But sometimes, Batman does cross paths with the heroic gods of New Genesis and the dark gods of Apokolips. This week, we're looking at three of those stories. We have a Bob Haney joint from the 70s, Jim Starlin trying his cosmic hand at DC and the next stop on our look at Grant Morrison's DC opus Death by the Ounce (The Brave and the Bold V.1 # 128) Cosmic Odyssey # 1-4 Final Crisis (DC Universe # 0, Final Crisis # 1-7, Final Crisis: Superman Beyond # 1-2, Final Crisis Submit, Batman V.1 # 682-683) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

Part 2 on the Socialist Transition is available on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by the Marxist theorist Ted Reese to discuss his book 'Socialism or Extinction'. We discuss Marxist crisis theory/ “breakdown theory” and Karl Marx's theory of the “tendency of the rate of profit to fall” in capitalism, elaborated by Henryk Grossman. Ted Reese discusses the “final contradictions” of capitalism, such as automation, the ecological crisis, and the “everything bubble” that could lead to the final breakdown of capitalism. Ted explains why Keynesian Social Democracy and the Green New Deal can't solve the root problem and prevent capitalism's inevitable tendency towards crisis. In Part 2 of the podcast (for Patrons) we discuss the viability of various specific solutions to the climate crisis, such as “overpopulation”, degrowth, and different forms of clean energy and sustainable resources such as Hemp. In this bonus episode, we also discuss the particularities of a communist transition and what stages of socialism could look like. This involves questions regarding the logistics of democracy, communism, labor, distribution, planning, dealing with poverty, transitioning away from the capitalist mode of production, and preventing counter-revolution. We think it is important to think seriously about the big questions regarding alternatives to capitalism and how to get there, which can be quite challenging to envision. Hey Girls and Boys, Lads and Lasses, the biggest superhero team on any Earth, The Legion of Super-Heroes, tangles with the villainous Time Trapper as he turns their former ally Superboy against them. It's an ambitious story in the post-Crisis world that serves as a template for DC storytelling to this day. We discuss this all with Legion super-fan and "DC Book of Lists" author Randall Lotowycz!Ep. 94 What If the Time Trapper created a pocket universe to turn Superboy against the Legion of Super-Heroes?With Special Guest author and editor Randall LotowyczEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Superman & Legion of Super-Heroes crossoverThe Legion of Super-Heroes can seem intimidating with their 20+ members from the traditional members like Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Mon-El to the wacky powered beings like Matter Eating Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Bouncing Boy, which is why we break down this team from the 60s through their major turning point post crisis in the 1980s. We travel through a multi issue arc constructed by major architects Paul Levitz and John Byrne that sees the Legion and Superman battle their old friend Superboy in a pocket universe, all controlled by the mysterious cloaked Time Trapper. We also discuss Time Trapper co-creator and Weird Tales writer Edmund Hamilton and how we are still seeing the reverberations of this story in DC's current multiverse and alternate Earth storytelling on film and TV - including the upcoming Flash film from 2023 and more! Finally, we speculate what's next for the Time Trapper and whether Marvel's Kang stole his onscreen...time. From Y: The Last Man to the weekly 52 series to Final Crisis, his covers are iconic. But if you're judging JG Jones just by his covers, you're missing a whole other side of his artistic prowess. We're talking of course about the storytelling skills he brings to interior pages, such as on Black Widow (introducing Yelena Belova and helping kick off the Marvel Knights imprint), Marvel Boy (with Grant Morrison), Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia (with Greg Rucka), and Wanted (with Mark Millar). His painterly style is instantly recognizable, and we dig into how he achieves it and all of his work on today's episode._____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Great Britain is the canary in the coal mine, and they are leading the way in what is most likely to happen in advanced economies. And you might say, "well I don't live in Great Britain, so why do I care?" And the reason why you care number one, is because we're all interconnected. So what happens in one part of the world, quite honestly is an indication that could spread throughout the global economy. And the UK has already started financial repression or the citizens are entering a winter that could look pretty darn gloomy. Whether you realize it or not, so are we.
As we prepare to delve into the complete Batman work of Grant Morrison, we begin with a discussion of Grant's beliefs in magic, sigil creation, manifestation, and drug use, to better understand the themes and ideas that came up during the course of their runs on Batman, Batman and Robin, Batman Incorporated, Final Crisis, the return of Bruce Wayne, etc. For some background on what we are discussing, check out Grant Morrison on Chaos Magic, the occult, and Sigil creation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTMFBYXmvMk
