On this episode of THE HEAVY GALAXY SHOW, Matt & John start things off by discussing their recent interviews for the show with Dozer/Wino/Kenny Hickey, followed by a discussion regarding the recent inductions into the rock-n-roll hall of fame and their continued disregard for rock and metal bands as a whole. The music kicks in gear with new videos from Portland proto-metal vets DANAVA and the Austin's HIGH DESERT QUEEN. The guys follow that up with an in-depth discussion on the modern day live music experience and their appreciation and preference of underground shows at smaller venues over the more costly and less intimate experience of live music held at larger venues. Gist discusses his involvement in RIPPLE MUSIC bands WOLFNAUT and KAISER and their most recent releases on the SF Bay Area label and features music videos from both. This episode's ROCK CITY SPOTLIGHT segment is the New York/New Jersey heavy rock scene and featured discussion and videos from MONSTER MAGNET, THE ATOMIC BITCHWAX, RESTLESS SPIRIT, BLACK WATER RISING and SPOTLIGHTS. Four albums in with From the Fathomless Deep (Ripple Music) and Behold! The Monolith are heavier than ever. Call it sludge with black metal and progressive tendencies, call it metal with a nasty attitude, or call it whatever you want; these guys hit and hit hard. There's no denying that fact. Buke sat down with guitarist Matt Price for a wide ranging discussion surrounding their new album, some band history, and so much more. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Over the course of, now, five albums with Family the Smiling Thrush (Ripple Music) Boss Keloid have gone from stoner metal to a progressive metal giant. They defy easy categorization and genre tags by keeping fans, and new listeners, on their toes with an amalgamation of styles and varying degrees of heaviness. To put it plain, no one else is doing what this band is doing, nor has the balls to put themselves out there like they do. And it works, tremendously so. Our maestro of the mic, Buke, chats with Ste Arands about the new album and the pitfalls of jamming together in the midst of the pandemic, how the band has evolved over the years personally and in sound and scope, a more collaborative writing approach then in the past, and an enormous discussion on Ste's vast and eclectic ear for music and how his upbringing with music as a constant shaped him as a musician. They also cover upcoming tour plans, Toto, the negative effects of the social media age, a surprise family likeness, and Ste's background in drumming and how he got his start behind the kit. This is an absolute blast of a conversation so dive in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Oh man. This episode. We start off by giving you 2 hours of access to the mind of Jadd Shickler...one of the original folks bringing heavy stoner/doom rock and metal to the world with the founding of All That's Heavy and MetorCity Records in the Late 90s/2000s. Fast forward to 2021 and he's working at MagneticEye Records and Ripple Music handling various label operations, AR, and marketing, and owner of the fantastic subscription-based specialty label Blues Funeral Recordings. VOID VATOR have been striking since 2014 and quickly developed a reputation as a take-no-prisoners live act. Positioning themselves as worthy heirs of the New Wave of Traditional American Heavy Metal, they previously collaborated with Grammy-nominated producer Ulrich Wild (Pantera, Deftones, Metalocalypse) on their debut EP ‘Dehumanized' (2017, WURMgroup), then with world renowned producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, DRI, Body Count) on their 6-track EP and Ripple Music debut ‘Stranded' (2019). Fueled by anger and frustration, the band started work on the record immediately after their last tour was abruptly ended just five dates in when the pandemic effectively put a stop to live music activities in the States for the rest of 2020. As the world struggled to adjust to life after Covid, VOID VATOR went to the studio to record guitars, bass, and vocals with Michael Spreitzer of Devildriver at Audio Vault Studio in Torrance, CA. Louder and faster than their previous records, the songs on ‘Great Fear Rising' pull influence from Power Trip, Turbonegro, The Ramones, Megadeth, Sepultura, Metallica, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy and deals with “getting off your ass and going for what you want, limb the highest mountain, and feel like you're in control“. The album was mixed and mastered on the East Coast in Milford, CT by Nick Bellmore of Toxic Holocaust/Kingdom of Sorrow at Dexter's Lab Recording, and will see an April 23rd, 2021 release on Ripple Music. John and Ben discuss Stubb's 2014 sophomore album, Cry of the Ocean. Released on Ripple Music, Cry of the Ocean mixes blues, psychedelia, and classic rock influences to come up with a sound that is closer in feel to the current San Diego heavy rock scene than what one might expect from the band's native England, thanks in no small part to their powerhouse, power trio lineup. Season 2, Episode 7, Album 32 Listen to Cry of the Ocean on Bandcamp Listen to The Greatest Thing You've Never Heard and find us on social media here: https://greatestthingpodcast.com. This episode contains new sounds from the Ripple Music roster courtesy of Appalooza and Kabbalah, a track from Californian legends Nebula's classic album To the Center plus debut releases from Olde Crow and Rostro Del Sol. We also go on a virtual tour of the European heavy underground scene visiting Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Spain and Greece. So get on board for another show full of heavy riffage!
On this episode we talk with Blasko about his new podcast "Volume Forever" and his new gig as A&R for Ripple Music.
A chat with Matt Helt, Nate Cohn, and Matt Smith of Bonehawk as well as fans Ramone, Chris, Wes, James, Curt, Mike, Michelle, Louis, and Terbly. We talk about how the fans fell in love with the awesome grooves of Bonehawk. Our conversation wanders into our thoughts on their incredible new album, Iron Mountain. We journey into stories of epic sea quests, recording at Ghetto Records, awkward moments in rock, Record Store days at Green Light Music, Pizza and much more. Are You Down with the Bonehawk? We started off with the fans and how they became fans of Bonehawk. Ramone kicked things off saying he learned about Bonehawk from Chris who runs the outstanding Kalamazoo record store called GreenLight Music. As Ramone describes, when Chris wants to tell you about a band you might dig, his catchphrase is “Dude!, You down with…”. In this case, “Dude! You down with the Bonehawk?”Ramone’s first encounter with the band was actually after they had played at the Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids with Valient Thor and Nashville Pussy. Turns out that Trans-Siberian Orchestra was playing the same night. Ramone and Chris made it over to the Pyramid Scheme, but missed Bonehawk. However, he did get to meet the guys, catch future shows, and along with Chris are big time fans.Awkward MomentsSpeaking of the Nashville Pussy show, Matt Helt talked about meeting Blaine during load in. Evidently, Blaine was enjoying a Subway sandwich when Matt says “Hey! What’s up man?”. Matt got the long stare with no reply until Matt awkwardly walked away. I can speak from experience, that I’ve felt the awkward goofiness of meeting someone you admire and totally feeling like a dork.Chris meets BonehawkChris discovered Bonehawk through a long standing friendship with former guitarist Chad Houts. Chad brought out Bonehawk’s stellar debut album Albino Rhino to GreenLight Music. Which as an FYI, this monster album has been re-released on vinyl. It is definitely worth being in your collection if you dig big grooves, guitar harmonies, and burly riffs. Chris is a staunch supporter of local music and in particular loves the music of Bonehawk. The new album, Iron Mountain, has been on display at the front counter and selling well. Many new Bonehawk fans are discovering the band through Chris’s praise of the band.Killer Music and Merch is EssentialIn addition to killer music, Bonehawk excels at killer merch. Ramone shared a story of getting Bonehawk booked on the Kalamazoo RibFest featuring Blue Oyster Cult. Bonehawk destroyed the stage and then proceed to setup a merch booth featuring a million different t-shirts, koozies, records, and condoms (ok, condoms are an exaggeration, but you get the idea)Meanwhile, the legendary Blue Oyster has a single shirt in two sizes. To say the least, Bonehawk’s music and merch drew in a slew of fans. This is how you create a buzz: great music and great marketing.Wes and James meets BonehawkChad Houts also brought Wes into the Bonehawk fold. He met Matt Helt and they shared cold beverages and cheese balls. Wes’s first encounter with Matt Helt and Nate was actually pre-Bonehawk when they were in a band called Nobody’s Favorite. Wes kept up the friendship with the guys and remains a fan of their music today.James got into Bonehawk through his friend Max in Ann Arbor (Hey, I know that guy :)). They caught the band in Hamtramck with Bison Machine and Kommander. For those who love heavy stoner riffs played with passion, this was an outstanding line-up. This one show hooked James and he’s been following the band religiously. James feels the new Iron Mountain album is one of the best rock albums of 2020. A complete Pure Michigan rock journey.Seaquest to find the RockBonehawk put out a shirt at the end of 2019 with their name and underneath it an image of an iconic landscape just off the coast of the Thumb area of Michigan called Turnip Rock. Get it, turn up rock. James took a voyage in search of the rock featured on Bonehawk’s shirt. He captured an image of himself with the shirt at Turnip Rock which the band enjoyed. If you get a chance, take a kayak out to Turnip Rock and bring along some Bonehawk jams for fun.Curt and Lewis Discover BonehawkActually, Curt is a long time friend of Matt’s going back to school days. Back when they would rock some Mario Kart. Curt actually jammed with Matt in his first band. While Curt isn’t playing much himself these days, he is stoked that Bonehawk has turned up the volume on the Michigan music scene. We found out that Louis is a brand new fan. He saw the picture with Nate advertising this episode of Fans With Bands and decided to check it out. You see Louis is a big fan of Nate’s other band Mustard Plug. They are a legendary ska punk band. Louis is happy to support local music and get into the music of Bonehawk.Bonehawk BeerLouis mentioned that working up in Ishpeming at Cognition Brewing, there isn’t a lot of live music (even without a pandemic going on ). However, Cognition plans to expand in 2021 and bring in some live music. We talked a bit about the band collaborations that Cognition has done with Burial Oath and Arctic Sleep. The brewing team has a love for heavy music and beer, so I’m thinking that a Bonehawk beer would be a perfect way to celebrate the pure Michigan rock fury of the band.Iron MountainThe new album from Bonehawk called Iron Mountain is stacked with monumental rock music. The songs flow like a rapid river and take you on a trip through their patented guitar harmonies, crunching riffs and rhythms. We talked a bit about how this new album reflects the growth and solid foundation the band has achieved in their sound and songwriting. While they love the first album Albino Rhino, the new album is a more cohesive whole. Matt indicates that Nate’s musical approach has helped Bonehawk become a better band with greater sonic focus. Nate adds that each album is completely different with Iron Mountain being grittier, deeper, and slightly more nuanced.Bonehawk at the LiveryWhile the band can’t tour to support Iron Mountain, Bonehawk is still reaching out to the fans virtually. Their latest project is a live performance recorded at The Livery in Benton Harbor. Nate shared that the band has been rehearsing and writing new music with new members Matt Smith and Cam Mammina.Music during a PandemicNate mentioned that putting out a new album during a pandemic isn’t optimal given they can’t tour. However, Ramone pointed out that this year has been a boon for new music. As we talk, it becomes clear that we all feel that music has been sustaining during this period of crisis. Chris added that while Green Light Music has had to pivot to shorter hours and fewer days open due to pandemic mitigation tactics, their sales are equal or even slightly better than the previous year.Another boon to Green Light Music has been the extended series of Record Store Days this year. Bonehawk teamed up with Green Light Music to sponsor giveaways for each of the record store days. This has helped both the store and the band to reach even more music fans. Yet another testament to the power of music, marketing, and collaboration.TerblyWe swung the conversation back to Terbly to get his story on becoming a Bonehawk fan. Terbly self-identifies as a “Matt Helt Groupie”. He has known Matt since childhood. He has followed his musical exploits starting with a 14 year old Matt playing in McCurly’s Caterpillars. Terbly’s favorite show was seeing Bonehawk open up for Local H at Shakespeare's pub. This was yet another awkward band encounter, this time with Local H. Ghetto RecordersJames asked about Bonehawk’s experience working at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit. Matt and Nate had actually gone there with their prior band Nobody’s Favorite. They really enjoyed working with Jim Diamond. His studio featured a ton of vintage effects and amps. I can imagine it was a candy store for any recording musician. They came back to Ghetto Recorders with Bonehawk to record Albino Rhino and a split EP (with Kingnomad) for Ripple Music. Jim was closing down the Ghetto Recorders and this was the second to last session. While there, Matt noticed an old Bic turntable that was the same turntable that his parent’s used to have when he was a kid. He bought the turntable from Jim and Matt’s mom found that she still had the original owners manual. Quite a fun find and a great memory that keeps giving with every spin of a disc.Second Coming of HeavyTalking about the recordings at Ghetto Recorders led to a discussion about the music recorded on the split. Matt Helt said he doesn’t really enjoy the songs on the split EP. While he had no issues with the recording that Jim did, he felt the band missed the mark. He’s even thought about potentially re-recording them.Chris and Ramone were quick to point out that they feel the songs on the EP are some of their favorite Bonehawk tunes. Matt felt that perhaps he had some issues that he just hadn’t been able to let go of. We all offered our encouragement to treat this as a therapy session and just let it all go.Mike Reviews Iron MountainFans Mike and Michelle joined our chat to share how they became Bonehawk fans. Mike is the stellar drummer of the now defunct Blue Snaggletooth. Mike and Matt met at the record release show for Albino Rhino. Apparently Mike was staking out his territory in the club for his drums. Matt came by and said “Dude. Just chill out. It will all work out” in his easy going manner. Ironically, both Matt and Mike are two sides of the same coin. Both shared that they are a bit OCD when it comes to setting up for a show, but demonstrate (or conceal) that stress in their own loveable ways. This meeting has led to a lasting friendship.Mike mentioned he had received an advanced copy of Iron Mountain and offered to share his notes with us. Overall he loves the album, so there wasn't any criticism to level. Except for the placement of the last song “Lake Of The Clouds” which Mike felt made for an anti-climatic ending. However, the rest of us felt that the placement was perfect. It just goes to show that everyone is entitled to their opinion and we can agree to disagree on occasion.Wrap it up with PizzaYou’ll want to listen to the end to hear about what makes for a perfect Bonehawk pizza. Then head over to Pizza King in Portage to order one. Dig into the fun stories, laughs, and much more in this episode of Fans With Bands with Bonehawk. We hope you enjoy it! Blynd Submyshynz is a podcast from the wild minds of Jeff Wilson (KOOK, Glory or Death Records, Heavy San Jose) and JD Norton (Heavy San Jose). Our goal is to expose you to new music in the DIY scene, and hang out with musicians we know or want to know better. Every week we'll take submissions from any band who finds our email address (blyndsub@gmail.com)...listen to them for the first time with our special guest and give honest reactions, and talk about things affecting DIY musicians around the globe. We come in hot with drinks and ice clinking ASMR, and talk to Amy about teaching piano, jamming at home, coming up as a classical pianist, and her old punk band that played the Warped tour (while she was 8.5 months pregnant). The merch table was busy this week, covering Haunt, Zeal & Ardor, Mastodon, and a new pedal that Amy's husband Jon gifted her.We shout out to Bizarre Albums and Tony Thaxton for covering Plantasia. Of course we had to sample some of Mort’s other music, including Cathedral of Pleasure, from his album Music for Sensuous Lovers. We then talk about Year of the Cobra’s latest release, a cover of Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan on the Magnetic Eye Records Black Sabbath tribute release. Amy then spills the beans that they recorded a track for a Blue Oyster Cult cover project that was started by the late Steve Hanford (rest in peace Thee Slayer Hippy), and is being completed by Steve’s partner Ian Watts and put out on Ripple Music. We spend a few minutes talking about what a cool and weird lineup their label Prophecy Productions has. Also...Jadd Shickler...come on baby...be our guest! And stick around after we wrap up, because we dropped the full version of their cover of Planet Caravan at the end! And maybe we got a little political at the end.Amy’s Favorite hometown band (Anal Mucus)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgBctnqOEMoYear of the Cobra Bandcamphttps://yearofthecobra.bandcamp.com/Prophecy Productionshttps://en.prophecy.de/MER Black Sabbath recordhttps://store.merhq.com/album/best-of-black-sabbathAnd the main event....this week's music!Infinite Shrug - Ones & Zeros all over the placehttps://infiniteshrug.bandcamp.com/album/infinite-shrug-epSlashers - Slashershttps://slashers.bandcamp.com/album/slashers-2Robert Glasper - Trade in Bars Yohttps://robertglasper.bandcamp.com/album/fuck-yo-feelingsThrash Armstrong - Glass Knuckles https://thrasharmstrong.bandcamp.com/Revan - Tyrant of Boneshttps://revan.bandcamp.com/Mort Garson - Rhapsody in Greenhttps://mortgarson.bandcamp.com/album/mother-earths-plantasiaBands! Today on the podcast we have Ripple Music recording artist Crystal Spiders! The Magic Garden, Uncle Acid, Mike Dean and first takes, and a lot more! ***** Only a year after recording their three-song demo and debuting live to a hometown crowd in Raleigh, the new band helmed by bassist Brenna Leath (Lightning Born) and drummer Tradd Yancey present their first riff-worshipping full-length, Molt. Pulling from classic rock dynamics and punk intensity, psychedelic textures, and bluesy swing, this is a band hewn from the same granite as contemporaries like Heavy Temple and The Well, who build upon well-trod post-Sabbath templates to blaze their own path. It’s a safe bet that Crystal Spiders will soon demand the attention of the fuzz-addicted legions far and wide. ***** Crystal Spiders: https://ripplemusic.bandcamp.com/album/molt https://www.facebook.com/crystalspidersinmymind/ ***** The Magic Garden: https://youtu.be/fLzFewjWeBk ***** Edited by Ian from No Masters Audio: https://www.instagram.com/nomastersaudio/ ***** SPONSORS : ___________________________ Fuzzy Cracklins: Get in The Swamp Krewe! Matt Bacon is a consultant, A&R man, and journalist specializing in the world of heavy metal. The founder of Dropout Media, Matt has worked with the likes of Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Coven, Exhorder as well as labels including Prophecy Productions, Artoffact Records and Ripple Music. Matt has also been dedicated to helping and developing young bands, through his numerous educational resources, the daily Instagram #BaconsBits series, and his podcast, Dumb & Dumbest. In this Music Growth Talks episode, Matt talks about his journey from an unemployed 19 year-old college dropout living in Brooklyn to an industry expert working with some of the biggest acts in the heavy metal world, and the methods he used to grow his career. In particular, we go over creating content at scale, and being “unreasonably” aggressive in your marketing to stand out. Listen to the episode in full for Matt’s practical tips on understanding your community, making the “one to many” experience feel “one to one”, and being on as many channels as you like. ⏯ Go to http://dottedmusic.com/2020/podcast/mgt150-matt-bacon for the show notes and http://musicgrowthtalks.com to subscribe to the podcast. One of our all-time favorite guests from one of our all-time favorite bands. Andrea of Holy Grove is back, and she was ready for our nonsense this time. This episode has a bit of everything: bathtub wisdom, two-part harmonies, nuanced opinions on reggae, and some rippin' tunes. Andrea also dives deep into Holy Grove's second album, II, available now on the excellent Ripple Music label. II is a fully realized, confident, polished-and-rough-in-all-the-right-ways banger of an album, and it is a treat to hear Andrea discuss what makes it such a special achievement for the band. Catch Holy Grove live at Northwest Hesh Fest this Saturday, September 21 at Star Theater in Portland. Music this week includes:"Valley of the Mystics" by Holy Grove (4:55)"Tit Tat" by Roadkill (22:44)"Blade Born" by Holy Grove (36:36)"Cordova" by Dead Feathers (57:25)"Mind Me When I'm Gone" by Supersoul (78:32)
Where to start? It is getting beyond hectic to keep pace with the heavy scene here in Australia. It feels like not a week goes by without discovering more new blood from all points of a very wide and talented spectrum. Incredible psych jams (Comacozer, Zong, Pseudo Mind Hive, Frozen Planet…1969), punishing doom and sludge (Merchant, Religious Observance, Summonus, Potion), searing heavy rock (Witchskull, Sumeru, Peeping Tom, Motherslug, Wicked City, Arrowhead) and all points in between, the scene ‘down under’ is literally overflowing and the quality is high. I’ve always felt a great deal of pride when our bands are heard and recognized around the globe. Recent years have seen bands such as Child, Riff Fist, and Powder for Pigeons playing their way around the festivals in Europe, in fact, one of our most electrifying bands is Hobo Magic and they are about to relocate to Europe and give being a touring band a red-hot crack. Arrowhead and Witchskull signing to Ripple Music and Rise Above respectively. Turtle Skull signing up with excellent Australian label Art as Catharsis. We cheer on every such success for our bands. There is a long, rich history of heavy music here which fits the ‘Doomed & Stoned’ vibe, and whilst some it has been heard I suspect much of it has flown under the radar over the years. For reference to some of our classic and much revered bands, I refer you to Christbait, Clagg, Dern Rutlidge, Budd, Thumlock, Pod People, Peeping Tom (not the Mike Patton version, this band is waaaay better and were around long before old mate Mike came along!), Pillow, Ahkmed, Warped, Blood Duster, Stiff Meat and Rollerball – a decent starting point anyway, this draws some Oz blood for you. Great news that accompanies this compilation is the resurrection of Pod People, who were previously signed to Rise Above Records and have been dormant for many years. You will find their track ‘Back to Reality’ here on the compilation, and they will be making a triumphant return at Sun Burn Festival in late 2019. Time to hit the road and get this into your speakers! A huge hell yeah to all of the bands who have contributed to the compilation, and to Billy at Doomed and Stoned for his support of the Australian scene, and scenes the world over. Thank you to all the bands for your patience, and more importantly, for bringing life and fire to the stages around the country (and beyond!). Cheers, Clint Willis Hand of Doom Radio Curator, Doomed & Stoned in Australia
Finlands prime fuzzers Craneium is back with a new album called "The narrow line" (Ripple Music) and we talked to them about being in strange places, how to argue with each other and about being grumpy.
Jadd Shickler has had his fingers in a lot of pies over the years. After the founding of the LEGENDARY Meteor City Records and All That is Heavy he dipped out of the scene for a long time. Recently though he has come back, first with Magnetic Eye Records but now also as a product manager for Ripple Music and with his own labels Post Wax and Blues Funeral. We have a FIRE interview where we talk ORIGINS.
