Susan and Sharon continue their conversation with legendary 80s TV Lady -- and The Facts of Life writer/producer -- Margie Peters! In Part 2, the conversation turns to the challenges of making comedy out of date rape and toxic masculinity; “comedy sparring” in the Different World writer's room with Debbie Allen, Thad Mumford and Susan Fales-Hill; the creative opportunities for “women of a certain age”; and the lasting impact of the cruel moniker “The FATS of Life”. Margie Peters has written and produced over 140 hours of television, including The Love Boat, Valerie, One Day at a Time and A Different World. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael catches up with Winchester Rotarian Tootie Rinker to learn about their upcoming fundraiser for NW Works. Tootie, who chairs the International Affair of Food and Wine Event, shared detailed insights about this significant event happening on Thursday, March 27th, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Fox Meadow Barn. The International Affair of Food and Wine is set to be a delightful evening filled with food, wine, and community spirit. Featuring sponsorships lined up and everything meticulously organized, Tootie Rinker ensures a wonderful evening despite the usual event planning stress. The event aims to benefit NW Works by raising funds for upgrading their computer learning equipment and other infrastructure needs. 'It's a great cause,' Tootie reminisced, 'I remember when NW Works started, and it's fantastic to see the progress they've made.' Tootie expressed deep gratitude for the support from sponsors and the community. Many restaurants are joining, including Savor by Crush, Bonnie Blue Southern Market, Cafe Del Sol, and Chinatown. The event will feature a variety of cuisines paired with wines from Australia, Italy, France, Argentina, and the US. There's something for everyone, including beer for those who prefer it over wine and an enticing silent auction. 'We've received generous sponsorships from Valley Health, F&M Bank, Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, and many others,' Tootie shared, underscoring the community's support. One of the unique elements of this event is the wine pull, where attendees can win wines worth between $25 and $200. 'The wine pull was a hit last year,' Tootie added. Additionally, the event offers attendees the chance to order their favorite wines for later delivery. The serene Fox Meadow Barn provides a beautiful backdrop for this gathering, enhancing the overall experience. The funds raised from this event play a crucial role in supporting NW Works. 'Every dollar raised goes a long way,' Tootie emphasized, encouraging donations for the silent auction. There's still time to donate if you're interested.' The involvement of NW Works clients, who will assist as part of their training in food service, highlights the collaborative spirit of Rotary events. Rotary's commitment to community service is evident. From the Healing Field of Honor to creating meals for soup kitchens, the Winchester Rotary Club's contributions are profound. 'Rotarians' contributions in kind, like donating wine and offering their labor, significantly cut down event costs, making our efforts deeply impactful,' Tootie mentioned, highlighting their dedication to service. As the conversation concludes, Tootie reflected on the fellowship and community involvement fostered through Rotary events. 'These events connect us deeply with our community and each other,' she said, inviting everyone to participate in the International Affair of Food and Wine. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a night of good food and company, this event promises a memorable evening for all. The International Affair of Food and Wine will take place on March 27th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Fox Meadow Barn. Tickets are available on Eventbrite for $125. Don't miss this elegant and enjoyable event that significantly supports NW Works and the community. For more information, visit winchesterrotary.org or join the conversation on their Facebook page. Episode 315: “Everything I Ever Learned About TV Writing, I Learned From ‘The Facts Of Life' | Anupam Nigam”The Facts of Learning about Television Writing from The Facts of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: TV Writer Anupam Nigam Shares His Lessons from The Facts Of LifeThe Golden Girls of Eastland: Top Lessons TV Writer Anupam Nigam Learned from The Facts Of Life For some people, a childhood spent lounging in front of the television leads to nothing but being sent to bed when Law and Order license plate comes on. But for Anupam Nigam, it led to a lifelong love of television – – and a successful career in TV writing and producing. And his favorite show of all? The Facts of Life! The Facts of Life was a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes and aired on NBC from 1979-1988. The show starred Charlotte Rae as Eastland School for Girls housemother Edna Garrett watching over an evolving cast of young female stars including Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Nancy McKeon and a very young Molly Ringwald! It ran for more than 200 episodes, and spawned three TV movies. Anupam Nigam has written and produced episodes of hit TV shows like Psych, Defiance, Cruel Summer, Mech-X4 and Station 19. He is currently writer and co-executive producer of the hit CBS drama Fire Country. Susan and Sharon talk with Anupam about his childhood as an Indian American kid in New Jersey, his early love of television, the insight of The Facts of Life -- and the facts he learned that have stayed with him to this day. THE CONVERSATIONGROWING UP INDIAN -- IN NEW JERSEY: For Anupam, who was raised in an immigrant Indian household, television was a window into the wider world of “American” families - and how they were alike, and different from, his.“I'M NOT A DOCTOR, BUT I WRITE FOR THEM ON TV” -- Anupam was pre-med, a lab researcher, and even a certified EMT -- briefly -- before realizing that TV blood was more his style.Anupam's first script was a spec episode of Star Trek: Voyager -- and after that he was hooked.Anupam's “scientist mind” cracked the code on how to write a Law & Order script, and it led to a coveted spot in the Warner Bros Writers Program -- and then a big move to Hollywood! His first job was on The Division -- starring Facts of Life's Nancy McKeon!YOU TAKE THE GOOD, YOU TAKE THE VERY, VERY BAD: Anupam actually learned about the facts of life from the many “very special” episodes The Facts of Life: Abortion, divorce, drug abuse and death, anyone?Natalie was a natural STAR - When Charlotte Rae toured Westlake School for research, her young tour guide was… Mindy Cohn. Charlotte insisted the producers meet her and the role of Natalie was created for her! Those roller-skates? Tootie had to wear them to make her taller!CHEAPER BY THE… TEN? The original first season cast had TEN main characters - The seven girls, Mrs. Garett (Charlotte Rae), teacher Emily Mahoney (Jenny O'Hara) and Headmaster Stephen Bradley (played by John Lawlor). The OG Eastlake students: Blair Warner (Lisa Whelchel), Nancy Olsen (Felice Schachter), Sue Anne Weaver (Julie Piekarski), Tootie Ramsey (Kim Fields), Molly Parker (Molly Ringwald), Cindy Webster (Julie Anne Haddock) and Natalie Green (Mindy Cohn).…AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR. After season one, the young cast was cut from seven girls down to the “Core Four”: Lisa Whelchel as Blair, Kim Fields as Tootie, Mindy Cohn as Natalie and bringing on newcomer Nancy McKeon as Jo Polniaczek. So, join Susan and Sharon -- and Anupam! -- as they talk Shondaland, The Golden Girls, shoulder pads, tea-time, Jermaine Jackson, Mech x4, Geri Jewel, Entertainment Weekly -- and “Who Shot J.R?”! All music, no annoying chatter! A way back when, every year I would crank it up at our annual holiday hootenannies. Then eventually posting the track list online, and generally spreading the cheer. And every year people would beg me to burn them a copy. I even burned dozens of CDs as Christmas gifts in 2000. Seems that people really dig it because of the wide variety of Christmas music; it's got everything from Combustible Edison to Frank Sinatra, from the most excellent holiday special ever The Year Without a Santa Claus to the Waitresses, to Bing, Ella, Burt and lots more. I revised and expanded it for the modcast back in 2007.Oh and stay tuned for a new Christmas modcast coming Sunday, Dec. 22! Happy Krimble! GRRRL Power Team Carries Forward Longo Great Dane Legacy [caption id="attachment_13331" align="alignleft" width="602"] Carol Grossman became synonymous with black Great Danes and the Longo dogs.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Carol Grossman, Jackie Van Delft and Tristen Lawrence with a tribute to Tootie Longo, who passed away in May of this year, and the Longo Great Dane legacy. Grossman, the "Queen of Great Danes," piloted dogs for Longo for decades, including legendary greats like the second Black in Breed history to win an All Breed Best In Show, BIS BISS Ch. Longo's Chief Joseph. She shares her memory of Tootie Longo this way: “As much of an icon as she was, she never really thought of herself as an icon, whereas Joey (Vergnetti) and Peter (Green) were icons. She didn't realize they felt that way about her. That was Tootie. She just was not assertive about who she was. And she didn't realize, I think, until the end, how famous she really was, that she carried a legacy of dogs through the years. She knew she had beautiful dogs and she knew she had a great line and she knew that she was lucky in picking dogs, but she never really realized what an icon she was.” Van Delft is the more recent member of the group, a Great Dane enthusiast who had wanted a Dane since childhood. She sought out Tootie Longo to acquire a dog, and wound up as a “member of the family.” [caption id="attachment_13330" align="alignright" width="700"] Jynx with (from left to right) Tristen Lawrence, Jackie Van Delft and Tootie Longo.[/caption] “Tootie pretty much took us under her wing,” Van Delft said. “We became really good friends… I got my first Longo puppy and he was amazing. He was my heart dog. But we would go to the Longos every weekend to twice a month. We were very lucky we only lived 45 minutes away from them. So we spent a lot of time and we got to go to all the shows together. And, you know, she just became a part of the family or I became part of hers, you know, and it's just that was it. She wasn't getting rid of me.” Grossman and Van Delft were instrumental in selecting Lawrence, a third generation Great Dane exhibitor, to campaign Jynx, one of the last of Tootie's dogs, to 36 specialty wins. “I'm a Great Dane handler my whole life,” Lawrence said. “My parents and both of their parents on both sides were very active in the breed as breeders as well as handlers. So there's never been a time that I didn't do this. I remember Tootie Longo as long as I've been alive. And so growing up, knowing the power and what she built in our sport, it was incredible and for her to come to me and say ‘we want you to show our dog,' I can't describe how proud I was, how incredible that was to me.”

In this episode of the High Impact Man podcast, host Neven Gorky (Defib) and co-host Troy Klinger (Dial Up) welcome Tootie, a former Marine and current entrepreneur. Tootie shares his journey from a small town in Tennessee to the Marine Corps, discussing the culture shock of boot camp and his aspirations to become an officer. After facing setbacks due to injuries, he navigates life post-military, finding purpose in ministry and overcoming personal struggles, including mental health challenges. Tootie emphasizes the importance of community support, the entrepreneurial spirit, and the need for men to return to their roots and responsibilities. His story is one of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of purpose, inspiring listeners to embrace their journeys and support one another.
Saxophonist/composer Jimmy Heath (born Oct 25, 1926) came from a musical family in the fertile music scene of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his brothers Percy, bassist with the Modern Jazz Quartet, and Tootie, drummer with a plethora of jazz groups have contributed far more than their share to the world of jazz. A contemporary and close friend of John Coltrane, Heath eclipsed his friend early in their careers, nicknamed “Little Bird”, Heath was chosen over Coltrane by no less than Dizzy Gillespie for a spot in one of his bands. A prolific composer and arranger, Heath has written any number of tunes that have become jazz standards. Enjoying the show? Help keep it going by donating here.

After a three year break, we're getting back to The Backs of Life! (As requested by absolutely no one! You're welcome!) Back in 2021, we started reviewing all the "backdoor pilot" episodes of classic 80s sitcom The Facts of Life. Now as we finally revive this very important project, we've brought in a special guest reviewer: friend of the Flopcast, Sci-Fi Explosion mastermind, and certified Factologist Chris Cummins! Kevin, Kornflake, and Chris are looking at the 1988 backdoor pilot episode "Big Apple Blues," in which Natalie moves to New York City to share an apartment with a pack of weirdos, including a pre-21 Jump Street Richard Grieco and a pre-SNL David Spade! Can Natalie make her dreams come true in the big city? Is a margarine spokesperson named King Toast somehow involved? And will it all lead to a successful long-running spinoff series? (Answers: Yes, yes, and absolutely not.) Meanwhile back in Peekskill with our regular cast, Blair has garage sale fever, Pippa might be a robot, and we get a brief but delightful glimpse of Tootie's old roller skates. It's magnificent. Kids, we still have one more Backs of Life episode to go, and we'll try to get to it before 2027. Watch Sci-Fi Explosion on Twitch! And our regular links... The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! It's another goofy random little show this week, including: Kornflake finds an Oompa Loompa at the Chocolate Expo; Kevin finds a rock star at the disco; the secret language of chickens is revealed; we're less than excited about Popcorn Day; and it's almost time to revive our Facts of Life review project, the Backs of Life. As parents, it is natural to want to know what our kids are experiencing. That is probably why at the beginning of every new school year, schools will have an open house where the parents can go to their child's classrooms, meet the teachers, and see where their child will be spending each day. I know the open house is an event that I look forward to each year and have never missed. That is one of the many horrible things about Andy dying. I no longer 'know' where Andy is. In my heart, I know he is in heaven, but what is heaven really like? Can he see us? Does he want to see us? Is time the same or different? I have to admit that I truly do not know. I was not given a chance to visit like I could visit his school classroom in years past or even like I could visit my daughter's college dorm. Sometimes, though, I allow myself to imagine what it might be like, and in today's interview with Tootie, we imagined together just what our boys might be doing. To take a step back, Tootie's son, Kole, was an amazing kid growing up, never really giving her any trouble. As an only child of divorced parents, he adjusted well and truly lived life to the fullest each day. Tootie says that Kole never met a stranger and was always ready for the next event or celebration. Everyone just loved Kole and gravitated to his positive outlook on life. It was crushing to Tootie and so many others, when 21-year-old Kole was suddenly killed in a car accident. As we talked, I told Tootie, that I could imagine Andy running through heaven shouting, 'Kole, Kole, Kole, Kole! Come quick! I'm so excited! My mom is going to talk to your mama! It's going to be great! Come, let's listen together!' Tootie said, that in typical Kole fashion, he would be eager to come along with this younger teen and not miss out on the excitement. We could both imagine their big grins smiling down as they watched us share. Admittedly, I really don't know if heaven is like that or not, but it sure is amazing to imagine that it might be. Even more, it warms my grieving heart to think of Andy running through heaven each week, excitedly bringing others like Kole to listen.

Ten-year-old Sacramento hip hop princess “Boss Tootie.” ‘Super Tuesday' Countdown California is likely to play a more impactful role in the 2024 election as our state's primary has been moved up to Tuesday, March 5– also known as “Super Tuesday.” Ballots will be sent out next month and voting starts soon after, but there is concern over voter enthusiasm and participation. Our conversation today with Tootie Rinker, Byron Brill, and Kathy Kanter gave details for a new non-profit getting started in our area, Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The group gave details for the organization, told of their history and leadership and explained why there is a need for it in our area. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. Tootie pointed out that while we have many great charities that provide clothing, meals, and toys to families in need, none offer suitable beds and bedding to the kids in these families. They explained that volunteers are needed at all skill levels. They will offer a trained team of volunteers on hand to help you through the build process. Learn more at their upcoming information session being held on January 15, 2024 at 5:30pm in the Strasburg CoWork space located at 411 E. King Street in Strasburg. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, June 25 Tudor's Biscuit World remains a staple of Appalachian cuisine and beyond…Make your fall plans now! The 2023 dates for Gauley Season have been released. WV's richest man, Marshall University President Brad D. Smith reflects on giving back to his home state…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Known for its made-from-scratch biscuit sandwiches, Tudor's Biscuit World has been a staple of Appalachian cuisine since it first opened and is one of the only fast-food chains of its size to originate in West Virginia. Elizabeth Epling, the marketing director for Tudor's, shared some facts about the growing chain, including that, in total, Tudor's has 74 locations, with its 75th opening soon in Inwood, West Virginia, spanning from the Northern Panhandle to the most southern part of the Mountain State. John Tudor, the son of founders Bill and Mae Tudor, operates most of the Huntington locations, and his son, Pat, owns a location in Lexington, Kentucky. And have you ever wondered about the names of the biscuits? Many of them are named after regular customers of the original Tudor's Biscuit World, including the Ron, Dottie, and Tootie. “When someone comes in every day, you tend to get to know that person on a first-name basis, so after a while, when Ron would come in every day for his sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, it became second nature for the person working at the counter to say, ‘Give me a Ron' rather than a sausage, egg, and cheese,” Epling says. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/06/14/tudors-biscuit-world-west-virginia-surprising-facts/ #2 – From HERALD-DISPATCH – Every September and October, West Virginia's Gauley River features the world's best whitewater. During this time, the Summersville Dam is drawn down at 2,800 cubic feet per second by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create close to 100 rapids, including nine Class V rapids in 26 miles. Gauley Season 2023 release dates are Sept. 8-11, 15-18, 22-25, Sept. 29-Oct. 2, and Oct. 6-8, 14-15 and 21-22. “Gauley Season is pure excitement in the whitewater rafting world,” said Roger Wilson, CEO of Adventures on the Gorge. “Rafters from all over know exactly what to expect, and they are already letting us know they will be in town for an unsurpassed experience.” Read more: https://www.herald-dispatch.com/news/dates-out-for-whitewater-rafting-on-the-gauley-river/article_47bb7aeb-4dc9-53b7-83a5-e2c7fb679507.html #3 – From MSN – Brad Smith was six years old when a plane carrying the 1970 Marshall University football team crashed a mile from his home near campus in southern West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board. His cousins rushed to aid their dying neighbors as volunteer firefighters. “I watched the flames burn outside my window,” Smith remembers. “And then I watched this community rise from the ashes.” Smith decided to take the country roads back home to West Virginia, the place he belongs—and into the President's House at Marshall, his alma mater, which he took over in January 2022. He brought back with him a sizable fortune, accumulated over nearly four decades in business. According to Forbes' ranking of the richest person in each state, he's West Virginia's wealthiest resident, worth $700 million. The former Intuit CEO, together with his wife Alys, founded Ascend West Virginia, the remote worker program that provides financial incentives and outdoor recreation opportunities to recruit young professionals to move to West Virginia. We ease on down the road this week and watched the Wiz (1978) with our friend Christian Turner. How exactly did heavy hitting director Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon) manage to direct this Wizard of Oz reimagining with an all-black cast, based on the Tony winning musical, is beyond us but we're all here for it. We're also here to remind you of the banger songs on this soundtrack. Released to a mixed reception, it has since found a cult following with audiences thanks to its television showings through the decades since its release. We finally get to talk about the Supreme diva herself Diana Ross on the podcast, who stars as a Harlem school teacher who finds herself transported to a Land of Oz by the way of a dystopian New York City, where she befriends a Scarecrow made of trash (Michael Jackson), a Coney Island Tin Man (Nipsey Russell), and a disco cowardly lion (Ted Ross). At the time the most expensive movie musical ever made, we discuss the insanely talented cast. We talk how this movie revists into adulthood, and that it's screenplay was adapted by MTMUG patron saint himself Joel Schumacher, who helped make this musical into the coke fueled fever dream we know and love. Topics discussed are the Facts of Life episode where Tootie nearly misses her high school graduation to auditon for Dorothy, the weird self-help seminar tone of Schumacher's script, and how JJ from Good Times was almost the Scarcrow. Orlando Actors David Almeida & Matthew Arter just completed re-watching every single episode of “The Facts Of Life” — so you don't have to! Well if you listened to last week's episode where the New Jersey waitress clearly didn't know what "Family Style" meant, the exact opposite happened at a Times Square "Family Style" place with me, Russ Meneve and Dave Attell. And the most important thing this time -- was to make the waiter look foolish. And if it takes making ourselves sick to do it -- then so be it!! Also, my class didn't like Notting Hill, which is sadly making me rethink one of my favorite movies; and a classic episode of The Facts of Life where Tootie almost becomes a prostitute. Boy they really knew how to write 'em back then. Also, a leftover bottle of wine and what's the protocol and a whole bunch more. You'll love it!! Hosted on Acast.
