EPISODE 84 - “THE MAKING OF MAGIC: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE WIZARD OF OZ - PART 1” - 4/21/2025 Perhaps one of the most beloved movies of all time, the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz debuted in that magical year of 1939. Based on the popular children's books by Frank L. Baum, it tells the story of a Kansas farm girl, Dorothy Gale, who, along with her devoted dog Toto, is transported to the magical land of Oz. This beloved classic has become such a touchstone in pop culture that phrases like “There's no place like home,” “Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore,” and “I'll get you, my pretty” have entered our collective lexicon. This week, we offer the first of a two part episode that explores the making of this MGM classic film.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Adapting The Wizard of Oz: Musical Versions From Baum to MGM and Beyond (2019), by Danielle Burkett & Dominic McHugh; The Wizard of Oz FAQ: All that's Left to Know About Life According to Oz (2014), by David J. How did the 1900 children's fairy tale turned populism allegory become one of the most well-known movies from 1939? What's the true number of witches? What's with all the slavery in Oz? Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 325 - The Hero's JourneyDuring the Christmas holidays, you may remember that I went over the the complete The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, written in 1900.  And by the way, when I finished writing the transcript for this episode, I realized that, while it was meant as a temporary transition from Poe's works to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, examining the similarities, and especially the differences between the literary works serves as a way to better understand Edgar Allan Poe's stories, as well as L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  Often we tend to try and learn more about the essence of a literary work by comparing it to a similar work - but I believe that you can learn a great deal about a literary work by comparing it to a work that is vastly different - and you can't get much different than The Wizard of Oz and a story by Poe.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Then I considered the movie A Complete Unknown about the great Bob Dylan.   But the problem was that I didn't think there was ANY connection between Edgar Poe and Bob Dylan - none at all.But I did some more research, and found out that WAS an amazing association between the two literary geniuses.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

BEST OF: The symbols of the serpent and dragon pervade the world entirely: the Rainbow Serpent in Australia, Nāgas of Asia/India, White Snake of China, Nahash of Hebrews, Leviathan and Edenic Serpent from the Bible, Viking sea serpent Jormungand, Medusa, Quetzalcoatl of Mesoamerica, Hopi Snake Dance, Serpent Mound of Ohio, Demiurge, Yaldabaoth, etc. St. Patrick also famously drove the snakes out of Ireland, but these serpents were pagans. The serpent can likewise be associated with lions and wolves in the sense that humans embody the qualities of these creatures on occasion, but are obviously not literal lions, wolves or serpents - see the animal, mineral, and plant bodies depicted in the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A man acting like a vicious wolf is where the werewolf is derived. We also have reptile brains, the oldest and darkest region of the human brain - the seat of cold, calculating, ritualistic, order, along with ego, instinct, and emotion (spirit). This dark and ancient region of the brain is symbolic of the eternal predator lurking in the shadows. On an even deeper level we have the basis for life in the form of entwined serpents - DNA. When Revelation talks about the dragon giving authority to the beast (13:4) it is discussing the Reptile brain giving authority to the animal self to act in certain ways - and how we can slay the dragon to obtain the alchemical gold of self-development. That Beast can only be calmed the Beauty and love. When people talk about evolving or being created by aliens, usually reptilians, they are formulating a modern myth around the reptile to explain human origins. Others refer to various demonic forces as reptilian, though Satan is necessary evil (adversary and resistance), Lucifer is the heat of lusting after materiality, and the Devil is the cold of depression. All of these things are symbols of the human and how we see and quantify the world, and although there very well may be intelligent reptile creatures that are humanoid, accusations of reptilian influences on world leaders is very likely a result of how we try to classify their behavior and the deals they make in the dark of public awareness. -FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

Hosts Mike and Kenny discuss the blockbusting film adaptation of Act 1 of the musical Wicked which stars Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande. Directed by Jon M. Chu. Wicked Pt. 1offers the back story of The Wizard of Oz's Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West as well as the Wizard. Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, a child conceived via an affair with green skin and rejected by her father. Ariana Grande stars as Galinda, born into wealth and influence and seemingly perfect. Galinda and Elphaba become roommates and rivals at Shiz University where both quickly become the center of attention, and eventually friends.  The film features outstanding vocal performances by Erivo and Grande as well as very strong visuals and production design. Jeff Goldbloom co-stars as the Wizard with Michelle Yeoh co-starring as Madame Morrible, the professor of magic.  Jonathan Bailey co-stars as the romantic Prince Fiyero. Faith Spotted: The question of God in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Where does evil / wickedness come from? The ability for narratives to cast wickedness on those undeserving of it as well as hide the wickedness and evil of others. Though our faith teaches we are all born into sin, what roll does environtmental elements and circumstances play in becoming evil/wicked?  All persons are created by and are beloved children of God, therefore as persons of faith we are called to respect and preserve the agency of "others" regardless of their faith or place.  As Christians we can celebrate the defeat of evil and the removal of the threat of evil and wickedness but we are not to celebrate the suffering or death of those who commit evil or wicked acts as this violates Christ's command to love all persons, even our enemies, as well as the command to forgive even one's enemies. While it can seem impossible, we are called to do so and can be empowered by God to do so. Persons of the Christian faith are not to blame persons or punish them for the sins of others.   Article with novelist Gregory Maguire regarding faith present in Wicked. https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2024/11/20/q-and-wicked-author-gregory-maguire-souls-saints-religion-oz-249323

Robert Winfree, Alexis Hejna and Mark Radulich present their Wicked Part 1 2024 Movie Review!Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name based on the 1995 novel, which in turn is based on the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.The film covers the musical's first act. It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande-Butera as Galinda Upland, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum rounding out the principal cast. Set in the Land of Oz before the events of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with her classmate Galinda, the future Glinda the Good.Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The film was split into two to avoid cutting plot points and expand the characters' journeys and relationships. Principal photography began in England in December 2022, was interrupted in July 2023 by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and was resumed and completed in January 2024.Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22. Critical response was positive; the film was named one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute, won Best Film at the National Board of Review and earned four nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It has grossed $455.6 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, becoming Chu's highest-grossing film. In the FIRST episode of the month of December, Cam & Dylan discuss 2 movies that are at the forefront of popularity in hte recent months, "The Wizard of Oz and Wicked" The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, it was primarily directed by Victor Fleming, who left production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind. It stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf received credit for the screenplay, while others made uncredited contributions. The music was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg. Continuing our recent witchy trend on Hyperspace Theories alongside our discussion of Agatha All Along, this episode discusses the movie Wicked: Part I, which broke box office records in its first week of release. Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester begin with a common focus of the podcast: the storytelling structure of the movie, and how it compares and contrasts with the Broadway musical that the films adapts. Director Jon M. Chu maximizes the opportunity of the movie medium to broaden the visual storytelling for the characters, themes, and world-building beyond what is possible on a Broadway stage, while leaving the plot and iconic musical numbers in place. Yet the movie adaptation of Wicked doesn't hesitate to make changes to take advantage of the movie medium, either, such as using close-ups on faces to enable emotional performances and greater vocal dynamic range that wouldn't work on stage. We then examine the character arcs of the two leading ladies of Wicked, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), particularly their motivations and wants within the story and the contrasting impulses of selflessness and selfishness. In Wicked, these character arcs are inseparable from the broader themes of the story, including oppression, resistance, and historical and political allegory. We consider how those themes have roots not only in the 2003 Wicked musical, but also Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which initiated the storytelling twist on the classic American mythic tale presented in the iconic and beloved The Wizard of Oz (1939) movie and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) novel by L. Frank Baum.

On this week's show, the hosts consider ‘Glicked' (or is it ‘Wadiator'? ‘Gladicked?'), the Wicked and Gladiator II double feature that promised to be this year's ‘Barbenheimer.' But did it deliver? Or even come close? First, the trio inspects Wicked, which won the weekend by a long shot (and broke a few records along the way.) At times, director Jon M. Chu's film adaptation of the famed Broadway musical (which is, itself, an adaptation of a series of novels inspired by Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) can feel overstuffed and exhausting, but as Dana puts it in her review, “it's so buoyant it lifts both witches-to-be, along with the audience, into the stratosphere.”  Then, the panel moves on to Gladiator II, the very belated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 2000 Best Picture Winner. Which is… a really bad movie. No longer is the question “are you not entertained?", but “are men okay, actually?” The panel attempts to make sense of Scott's “dismal retread” and debate whether Denzel Washington's free reign over his character benefited the movie at large. Finally, Slate's Dan Kois joins to discuss “The 25 Most Important Recipes of the Past 100 Years,” a wonderful and lovely mega package compiled by Kois and J. Bryan Lowder that explores the history of home cooking in America and how it's changed over time. (Dan also cooked all 25 recipes, and then some, an epic saga which he chronicled.) On this week's show, the hosts consider ‘Glicked' (or is it ‘Wadiator'? (Dan also cooked all 25 recipes, and then some, an epic saga which he chronicled.) Welcome to our 33rd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which is a novel by Gregory Maguire that inspired the successful musical and now movie adaptation. Wicked is a darker and more adult-themed revisionist exploration of the characters and setting of the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, its sequels, and the 1939 film adaptation. It is presented as a biography of the Wicked Witch of the West, here given the name "Elphaba". The book follows Elphaba from her birth through her social ostracism, school years, radicalization, and final days. Maguire shows the traditionally villainous character in a sympathetic light, using her journey to explore the problem of evil and the nature versus nurture debate, as well as themes of terrorism, propaganda, and existential purpose. Join the conversation! Share your thoughts, queries, and viewpoints in the comments or connect with Marisa (@serafinitv) and me on social media. In our upcoming discussion, we'll explore Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton.
