It's time for Part 2 of one of the biggest Complete Works events in history, where two of our subjects are in the same movie together! Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh both return to their roles from last year's WICKED as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Madame Morrible alongside Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and more! It's time for us to talk about WICKED: FOR GOOD!
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good is the musical fantasy film which adapts the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaption. It is the sequel to Wicked (2024). Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda (Arianna Grande) resides at the palace in Emerald City, revelling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she'll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good. We break down all things from adapting Act 2, the magic of acting, and the pros and cons of leaning into all of the Wizard of Oz elements.
IT'S TIME TO WATCH THE MUPPETS! This week we watched The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. Distracted rants include but are not limited to laundry, politics, tumbleweed, Pepe, David Alan Grier, Wicked, Ja Rule, Life as We Know It, and much more!"Adapted from L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, this latest retelling of the classic story follows Dorothy Gale (Ashanti) as she journeys through an Oz populated by Muppets to find the Wizard and become a star."Follow us:Twitter.com/ittwtmInstagram.com/ittwtm
This week on End Credits, we're off to see the Wizard. Again. Inevitably, we return to the Land of Oz and all of our old, familiar friends who are back on the screen just in time for awards consideration in Wicked: For Good. And since we're getting close to that year end mark, we're going to make our best guess about what other movies we've yet to see that might be among the best. This Wednesday, November 26, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Three to See. We're rapidly coming up on the end of the year, and you know what that means: The Top 5 of the Year episode is coming! Between now and then, the gang will be making their lists and considering their options and that includes deciding on what movies are worth their time and which ones might be finalists for those five slots. So, before getting into this week's movies, we will talk about other movies we'll be seeing in the weeks to come. REVIEW: Wicked For Good (2025). When we last left the world of Wicked, the powerful witch Elphaba discovers that the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in nothing but a con man, and leaves her best friend Glinda to mount a full blown insurrection against his growing authoritarian tendencies. In the epic conclusion, a new wrench is thrown into the mix with the arrival of a girl from Kansas in a tornado, but is the so-called Wicked Witch of the West able to re-write her own ending? Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return, but will those big crowds that came out for part one join them? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Jeff Goldblum is an actor and musician who stars as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the movie musical Wicked and its upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good. In this conversation from July 2022, Goldblum sits down with Willie Geist to talk about returning as Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World: Dominion, reuniting with Laura Dern and Sam Neill nearly three decades after the original Jurassic Park, and leading his own jazz ensemble when he's not on set. Looking back, he reflects on the creativity, gratitude, and spontaneity that continue to define both his work and his life. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join Alex and guest host Dr. Jill Swirsky as they enter the world of musical theater yet again, this time traveling to the land of Oz in Wicked (2024)! The film is an adaptation of the Broadway play, which was an adaptation of the novel by Gregory Maguire. We follow Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, the eventual Wicked Witch of the West, on her journey as a child and young adult. Along the way, she learns about her true magical abilities but ultimately becomes the villain of Oz when she uncovers a terrible secret. Along for the ride is Ariana Grande's Glinda (Galinda at the start!), who at first is antagonistic toward Elphaba but ultimately creates a powerful friendship. Jeff Goldblum shines as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Michelle Yeoh is truly a scary Madame Morrible. The story offers a rich well of psychological concepts, from ostracism and adolescent development in its wake, as well as Maslow's self-actualization theory. It's such a good story, you'll definitely end up defying gravity! Read Dr. Swirsky's Psi Chi blog Psychology Pop Culture Corner for contributions on more musicals! The beloved children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of OZ has been celebrated as the quintessential American fairytale. But, many believe that the book is more than just a pleasing adventure story for kids. It's been argued that hidden in the text is a subtle allegory that satirizes the politics of late 19th century America. Some believe that the author L. Frank Baum used his fantasy story to make a point about the election of 1896 and the candidates William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley. However, many Baum biographers have disputed this claim. Was L. Frank Baum writing a populist parable or does that idea stem from a deep misunderstanding of his politics? Tune-in and find out how dorm-room bonding rituals, the Great Gig in the Sky, and Sebastian's greatest moment of synchronicity all play a role in the story.Class starts soon, so enroll today! The death of music legend and pop-culture icon Ozzy Osbourne has sparked a series of conspiracy theories and strange behaviors. Some claim he died suddenly from a covid-shot even though their evidence is a 2021 report, meaning it must have taken 4 years to work? Others are trying to find the occult symbols that foretold his death without realizing the “Prince of Darkness” was a persona. Ozzy was actually a Christian and a practicing member of the Church of England even back in the 1990s. Yet, some Christian influencers are claiming he just heard the gospel prior to his death. Other Christians are organizing prayers for his soul which they assume is burning in hell. The irony in this is just delightful: one, Jesus tells his followers to pray internally and never make it a public spectacle; two, Christians are not supposed to judge others from surface level optics. In other words, Ozzy was probably a more devout Christian than the self-righteous trying to profit off his name and image. Besides, read his lyrics and compare them with contemporary pop-music. It is in the latter where one will find the devil.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. I'm joined with the co-editors of Broadview Press' new edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Professors Dina Schiff Massachi and Mark I. West. This episode couldn't come out (okay I couldn't help myself there) at a better time since asking someone if they were a "friend of Dorothy" was slang in the 20th century for being part of the LGBT community. First, Dina and Mark provide scholarly insight into L. Frank Baum's Oz books and how he created an original American fairy tale. We talk all about the numerous adaptations that Baum's books have inspired including the iconic MGM film, Return to Oz, and Gregory's Maguire's Wicked. As Dina reminds us, Baum's work was progressive for its time especially the strong female characters who challenge gender norms, and in Dina's opinion, Baum's Dorothy might be more feminist than Judy Garland's Dorothy! Dina and Mark explain that this new Broadview edition not only provides historical context for deeper analysis but also the original illustrations. Last month, UC Berkeley researchers published a study about how they tricked the eye into seeing a new color. It was a highly saturated teal, a peacock green, the greenest of all greens. The scientists produced this color, which they named “olo,” by shining a laser into the eye and stimulating one type of color-sensitive photoreceptor cells called cones. Austin Roorda, a professor of optometry and vision science at Berkeley's School of Optometry, developed the optical imaging platform they used in this project. It's called Oz, after the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In the 1939 film adaptation, the lead character, Dorothy, goes from her black-and-white farm in Kansas to the color world of Oz.“Ozvision is really directly tied to the book and to the movie where the Emerald City is this unearthly green color,” said Roorda. “The intent and the aspiration was to elicit that same kind of response by going from a natural-colored world to a supernatural-colored world by a direct stimulation of these cones.” It has enormous potential, he said, to transform how we understand and treat eye diseases, and to expand the way we see the world around us.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo via Unsplash+This is the last episode of our Berkeley Voices series on transformation. EPISODE 84 - “THE MAKING OF MAGIC: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE WIZARD OF OZ - PART 1” - 4/21/2025 Perhaps one of the most beloved movies of all time, the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz debuted in that magical year of 1939. Based on the popular children's books by Frank L. Baum, it tells the story of a Kansas farm girl, Dorothy Gale, who, along with her devoted dog Toto, is transported to the magical land of Oz. This beloved classic has become such a touchstone in pop culture that phrases like “There's no place like home,” “Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore,” and “I'll get you, my pretty” have entered our collective lexicon. This week, we offer the first of a two part episode that explores the making of this MGM classic film. “Larry vs. Michael J. Fox” (September 11, 2011) For better or worse, Larry David is a truth-teller, and the fictional version of him can help but to poke at social taboos. In this Curb Your Enthusiasm episode, Larry suspects that Michael J. Fox may be using Parkinson's to get away with bad behavior while also insisting that his latest love interest's seven-year-old child is gay. It's a lot, but here's the thing: Larry is often not wrong. Read “The Great and Wonderful Wizard of Odds,” the 2000 New York Times piece on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Before this year’s election, Heather Cox Richardson, a historian at Boston College, joined “Make Me Smart” live in Boston to unpack the high stakes for our economy and democracy. Now that the election is over and the transition to a second Donald Trump administration is underway, we're following up. On the show today, Richardson weighs in on the election aftermath. She explains how the current media environment in the United States played into the election, how economic narratives have influenced American politics throughout history, and what the past can tell us about how President-elect Trump might brand his economic agenda while in office. Then, we’ll get into the bipartisan effort to add federal judges that’s suddenly falling apart. And, author Evan Schwartz was wrong about the inspiration behind L. Frank Baum's “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Here’s everything we talked about today: “December 9, 2024” from “Letters from an American” “What Donald Trump’s Win Means for the Economy” from Time Opinion: “Voters prefer Harris's agenda to Trump's — they just don't realize it. Take our quiz.” from The Washington Post “On Issue After Issue, Trump Promises the Moon. No Word on the Rocket.” from The New York Times “Biden special envoy for hostages is in Beirut in search of Austin Tice” from The Washington Post “House sets up vote on bill to add dozens of new federal judgeships” from Roll Call “Ernst, Under MAGA Pressure, Signals Backing for Hegseth's Pentagon Bid” from The New York Times Power the show with a donation today and don’t forget to pick up one of our thank you gifts at a discount. On this week's show, the hosts consider ‘Glicked' (or is it ‘Wadiator'? ‘Gladicked?'), the Wicked and Gladiator II double feature that promised to be this year's ‘Barbenheimer.' But did it deliver? Or even come close? First, the trio inspects Wicked, which won the weekend by a long shot (and broke a few records along the way.) At times, director Jon M. Chu's film adaptation of the famed Broadway musical (which is, itself, an adaptation of a series of novels inspired by Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) can feel overstuffed and exhausting, but as Dana puts it in her review, “it's so buoyant it lifts both witches-to-be, along with the audience, into the stratosphere.” Then, the panel moves on to Gladiator II, the very belated follow-up to Ridley Scott's 2000 Best Picture Winner. Which is… a really bad movie. No longer is the question “are you not entertained?", but “are men okay, actually?” The panel attempts to make sense of Scott's “dismal retread” and debate whether Denzel Washington's free reign over his character benefited the movie at large. Finally, Slate's Dan Kois joins to discuss “The 25 Most Important Recipes of the Past 100 Years,” a wonderful and lovely mega package compiled by Kois and J. Bryan Lowder that explores the history of home cooking in America and how it's changed over time. (Dan also cooked all 25 recipes, and then some, an epic saga which he chronicled.) In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, it's the long-awaited Bluesky debate. Following the mass exodus from Twitter/X, the hosts discuss the pros and cons of migrating over to a new, remarkably similar, platform. We are still taking questions for our annual call-in show!
