Episode: 2320 Tracing recent history: computer memory over three decades. Today, we get smaller.
The storage industry is increasingly focused on memory rather than traditional storage, and this reflects an architectural shift in the compute stack. This episode of On-Premise IT focuses on the new storage stack, which now includes memory, with Andy Banta, Jim Jones, Vuong Pham, and Stephen Foskett, all of whom are attending Storage Field Day 26 and SNIA's Storage Developer Conference. The difference between memory and storage was historically based on the technology at hand, but these lines are blurring. The latest systems can address storage and memory in very similar ways, and can apply advanced data management techniques to memory as well as storage. NVMe, NAND flash, CXL, and persistent memory technologies are blurring the lines, and the latest developments in software, as highlighted at SNIA's SDC, bring new capabilities. As memory becomes more like storage, what was once primary storage has a new job to perform further down in the hierarchy focused on data management, ransomware, and data protection. © Gestalt IT, LLC for Gestalt IT: Primary Storage is Becoming Secondary Storage
In this slightly longer bite size podcast I discuss secondary storage: What is it? What are the 3 types you need to know about for GCSE? What are the 6 characteristics of storage types that you need to be aware of for answering analytical questions in the exam. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bitesize-computer-science/message

Think you know backup? Think again. Backup isn’t what it was even five years ago. There are new technologies, including the cloud, that can unburden you from the chore of backing up your data. So if you’re doing things the old-fashioned way, this “10 on Tech” episode is for you. Dan Keldsen, Director Of Customer Innovation for Wasabi, chats with ActualTech Media’s James Green about how backup used to be done, and compares it with how backup is done by forward-thinking companies nowadays. He also goes into detail on some specific methods organizations can use to transition from undependable and slow backup systems to modern backup systems that can save you time and money. Show highlights include: The good and bad of traditional backup systems Why your current backup solution might be a “ticking time bomb” Scary examples of recent backup failures The shortcomings of tape backup A surprising tape shortage, which is starting to impact many companies’ backup strategy Tips for moving from on-premises backups to cloud backups Benefits of VTLs, or “virtual tape libraries,” and cloud gateways How to reclaim time in your day by moving to backup-as-a-service Resource Links: Tape-To-Cloud Migration Case Study – https://s3.wasabisys.com/wsbi-media/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Tape_to_Cloud_Marquis_and_Wasabi_White_Paper.pdf Comparing Pricing Between Wasabi And Amazon S3 for Secondary Storage - https://s3.wasabisys.com/wsbi-media/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Tape_to_Cloud_Marquis_and_Wasabi_White_Paper.pdf What Does ‘11 Nines’ of Durability Really Mean? - https://wasabi.com/blog/11-nines-durability/ Backup and Recovery Overview - https://wasabi.com/backup-and-recovery/ Wasabi - https://wasabi.com/ Free Trial - https://wasabi.com/sign-up/ We hope you enjoy this episode; and don’t forget to subscribe to the show on iTunes, Google Play, or Stitcher.

In the world of HCI vSAN helped redefine the possible in the primary storage space. Now Cohesity is looking to bring these same principles and advantages to the secondary storage space. Secondary data consumes about 80% of enterprise storage capacity and imposes a huge burden on enterprise IT budgets. Cohesity calls this the Storage Iceberg. This week we bring in Cohesity CTO and old friend Rawlinson Rivera to walk us the details of Cohesity 4.0 and how they have radically simplified secondary storage management. Rawlinson Rivera is the Global Field Chief Technology Officer at Cohesity, Inc. He is well known as an industry thought leader on cloud enterprise architectures and hyper-converged infrastructures.
